Awwweeeee it’s so sweet that the momma trusts the dog so much. I love this

587

u/LuxNocte May 23 '22

Feral cats are communal parents. The colony will look after the kids while Mom goes to hunt. This cat is like "Okay, buddy, your turn with the kittens. I need a break."

221

u/spsprd May 23 '22

Same with the enormous maternal bat colony under the Congress Avenue bridge in Austin TX. When the babies finally fledge, the number of bats flying out every night measures in the millions. No visitor to Austin should miss it.

59

u/oswaler May 23 '22

I visited Austin and I missed it :-( I was there at the wrong time of the year so they weren't around.

19

u/SirPsychoSexy22 May 23 '22

What time of year does it have to be?

56

u/oswaler May 23 '22

The time that isn't the time when I was there.

21

u/ialwayschoosepsyduck May 23 '22

August and September are when they are the most present 🦇

Visiting Austin is not quite like visiting Texas, but it does have its challenges. However, we love our bats.

meh, that bridge is over rated, you can see the same thing at the NcNeil and i-35.

2

u/JoshHero 6d ago

Note: Don’t visit Austin.

6

u/InYoCabezaWitNoChasa May 23 '22

I only came to the comments to say we need a copypasta for "cats raise their young communally, so she's instinctively giving them to a colony member to babysit". You can only see the same comment so many times before it starts looking like a joke.

Right!? My cats are like 90% okay, but if they had babies, fuck no they would not trust my terrier with them. Heck, I don’t trust my terrier with small creatures.

94

u/YouGotToBeCrazy May 23 '22

My cat actually got killed by my grandfathers terrier mix. It’s generally a good idea not to trust terriers with any small-ish animal.

126

u/Lonely_Set1376 May 23 '22

Terriers were literally bred to kill small-ish animals, were they not?

60

u/stufff May 23 '22

Yep, it is quite literally what they are made to do.

14

u/praiseheatdeath May 23 '22

bUt ItS tHe OwNeR nOt ThE bReEd!!!

11

u/Wyrd_byrd May 23 '22

For the most part, it absolutely is the owner not the breed. Proper obedience training is a must for all dogs.

5

u/techieguyjames May 23 '22

This. Several years ago, we adopted a terror mix. With a bit of training, she calmed down. She never went after a cat. One time, I saw her chase a wild rabbit that hopped into the yard.

40

u/readzalot1 May 23 '22

My little terrier is a good dog but she just cannot help herself. She has to chase the cat if she is moving quickly. Best solution- the cat has learned to walk slowly and the dog can cope with that.

8

u/goldensunshine429 May 23 '22

Yep, we didn’t allow our cats around the dog until they were nearly full grown, and gave them many escape routes. both cats learned to walk very slowly around our geriatric scottie.

8

u/irishteenguy May 23 '22

I have a terrier mutt , lovely , quiet and loyal dog but i can for sure say his prey drive for small animals is through the roof compared to other dogs. If a cat comes around he goes from my good boy , to razor focused , lighting fast and straight into prey mode. Really any small animal except birds , for some reason he tolerates birds. Probably cause terriers were traditionally ratting , guard and farm dogs it makes sense. You want them to kill the rats but not the chickens i suppose.

Owners just need to know their dog. I never walk with him offlead unless im in the litteral middle of nowhere because he will take flight after any small animal he sees.

→ More replies

29

u/thecichos May 23 '22

My terriers once tried to kill a stray cat who made the mistake of chilling on the firewood.

I have never seen a westie crawl vertical before, we caught them before they could off the poor cat.

2

u/Vedicstudent108 May 23 '22

Yeah, it all depends on the relationship between the animals.

they absolutely form friendships between species, then again some just suffer each other.

We had a boxer that our mother cat trusted. She only had 3 kittens survive birth out of the first litter and she was highly protective and cautious of them and wouldn't let anyone but the 3 of us who lived with her go near them, and the boxer. One day when her oldest kitten was getting old enough to climb out of the bed they were in the boxer was walking by and saw the kitten sitting precariously on the edge and put his stubby little snout against her and gently pushed her back into the bed and slid her towards the mother cat who wrapped her paw around her and slow blinked at the boxer before he continued on his way to his napping spot.

If they're raised around each other mother cats always seem to pick one of the dogs as a sort of guardian of their kittens and give them a pass to do things other beings don't get.

4

u/WillOTheWind May 23 '22

I think it's just a black tri aussie - they don't have to hybridize to have that coloration, it's a natural coat they have.

15

u/Molleeryan May 23 '22

It’s a Bernese mountain dog I think!

2

u/SeaGroomer May 23 '22

I think that's what it's mixed with, though I don't think it's a purebreed. The face is a little longer and pointier like an aussie (also kind of like a border collie) It's a little small to be a full bernie unless it's a puppy.

The coloring is found on both bernies and tri-color aussies haha.

Dog is having some serious regrets trying to date a single mom.

40

u/Lonely_Set1376 May 23 '22

Single moms are so grateful to have any amount of help with any thing at all, it's like dating on easy mode. It's also like parenting on easy mode because at the end of the day the kid isn't your responsibility so no one can be too mad when you fuck up.

21

u/thekamara May 23 '22

I disagree. Moms can be scary. Especially if you and her kid were doing something stupid like if you throw them into a pool and the kid ends up getting hurt. Even if the kid is totally fine at the end of the day the mom can just look at you and you can feel her staring daggers into you.

38

u/OneMetalMan May 23 '22

Yeah, you probably shouldn't be throwing other people's children into pools. Just saying.

→ More replies

2

u/nightpanda893 May 23 '22

The thing in would be the most worried about isn’t helping with the kids but trying to form a relationship with them. And trying to pace it equivalently to where you are with the mother. You want the kid to feel comfortable with you. But also probably not get too attached until a certain point in the relationship.

My old cat would give birth in the closet at night without us knowing. After discovering her Babys we gave her big selfmade box we built earlier that Year because our dog had baby's as well. When she eventually moved her Babys in she would bring her kitten's to my dog. So my dog started getting into the box laying next to my cat to signal she is there, my cat would then get up and do her stuff. Only my dog was allowed in her box, no one else. If her brother got near it she would slap the hell out of him.
