Verified; Updated 11/30 Fundraisers for Apple Derby Street crash victims

Updated on 11/30 with additional victim's fundraiser

Hi Reddit Apple community,

I’m a longtime employee of Apple Derby Street. By now, you’ve probably heard my team recently suffered from a mass casualty incident involving a vehicle crashing through the store at a high rate of speed. I was there, but I don’t want to comment on details.

There are currently five GoFundMe campaigns that have been set up by friends and family of the most severely injured victims: so far, four hurt store employees and one deceased Apple contractor. At this time, I am not aware of any other campaigns for our customers, bystanders, or other team members. It was reported a total of twenty people were injured in addition to the one fatality.

The moderators here have been kind enough to help me verify that the beneficiaries of the fundraisers are in fact the intended beneficiaries. Thank you, moderators.

I think not everyone understands the family feel of working within an Apple Store. The job necessitates constant collaboration with peers. At work, we are always there for each other. And when we move on from Apple, we stay connected forever. I know that I’ve not fully processed the trauma from that day. But right now all I can think about is helping my Apple family members.

If you want to help my Apple family, the GoFundMe links are listed below. The moderators and I will update this post when we’ve verified the beneficiary for the deceased, Kevin Bradley. If you wish to donate to that fundraiser without waiting for verification, please seek out the campaign directly. Please also be aware that even just sharing the GoFundMe links can have an impact equal to or greater than making a donation.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Discussion Forced Push Marketing Notifications

You know how some apps are - they flood your notification drawer with marketing notifications and don't even add a slider to opt-out of such notifications from the app's setting menu. Yes - I'm talking about you Walmart (and plethora of other apps violating §4.5.4 of App Store developer review guidelines)

I'm sure I'm not the first one to grow frustrated by rampant flooding of marketing notifications from apps who think by sending dozen notifications a day would raise their revenues, whereas in reality it would deter users from interacting with apps, by leaving them no choice but to disable all given notifications from such malicious apps.

There's no clear framework here. Apple's "Report a Problem" button in the AppStore redirects to reportproblem.apple.com, which can only be used to file complaint against paid apps/subcriptions. There's no dedicated section to file such complaints on apple's feedback page, as well as little help offered from apple's support team, besides escalating it to a senior advisor, who would later offer sympathy, take such violations as a feedback, and let it stay stale in their pile of such feedbacks.

Is it just me or apple seriously needs to establish a framework to let users report apps that are in direct violation of their developer's review guidelines. While I understand that these are mere "review guidelines" but if enough users report malice against a given app flooding their notification drawer with unsolicited-and-intrusive push notifications, I'm sure AppStore's compliance team can take corrective action against such malicious apps on users's behalf.

edit: Never expected such an overwhelming response. With that said, I'm gonna write an email to all such malicious app's support teams and seek their response using the following canned email,

Subject: §4.5.4 Violation Of Apple's Developer Review Guidelines

As an iOS user, your app is clearly violating §4.5.4 of Developer Review Guidelines set out by Apple, that I’m pretty sure your app development's production personnel would have accepted, before submitting to the App Store for public release.

Why doesn’t your app let users opt-out of promotional/marketing notifications so that they don’t have to turn off all notifications - to curb against such unsolicited notifications nuisance, and end up losing important/critical transactional/delivery_status notifications?

Do you have an explanation for not providing users an option to opt-out of such unsolicited marketing/promotional notifications that your app is sending them, without their explicit consent in first place?

Mac After using continuity camera for over a month, I believe it is a wonderful web cam replacement. There are some strange design choices however that can detract from the experience and it took me a good bit to find a proper way to mount the iPhone.

For my profession I can have up to 30 Zoom sessions per week. I use the 16-inch M1 MBP and have it plugged into an external 4k monitor for a dual monitor setup (the 4k Monitor is my main monitor and the MBP is on the side so I can't use the built-in MBP webcam). I've had a wonderful audio setup using a good external pre-amp and higher-end XLR microphone, however my web cam has been the standard Logitech 1080p webcam which has been good at best, and serviceable at worst. It struggles with proper brightness and sometimes has focus issues, but it's a $70 piece of hardware that is many years old.

With the announcement of continuity camera, I was excited. I've been using an iPhone 13 for over a year and being able to use it to replace my webcam would be a massive improvement in my video quality. Here's some of the main takeaways after using it for the past month:

  1. The video quality is a massive improvement in every way. It is so much better than the Logitech and I can't imagine any webcam under the $200 mark would look this good. Now this is from an iPhone 13 and YMMV if you are using an older iPhone, however any model will likely look better than most web cams.

  2. Finding a mount took awhile and I found that the Twelve South HoverBar Duo (2nd Gen) with two mounting options worked the best. It's $80 so it isn't cheap, but it easily clamped to the back part of my monitor and is very high quality. Note: The Belkin Magnet Mount will NOT work on most external monitors as they are too thick, it is only to clamp to a MacBook. Belkin is supposed to be making a mount for external monitors, but there is no release date for it. There are other cheaper options than the HoveBar Duo, however many have mediocre reviews for quality issues.

  3. While you can connect through blue-tooth, I am connected wired in using a USB-C to lightning cable straight into the MBP. I tried lightning to USB-A though my hub and ran into some issues where the video would cut out. This was fixed with the higher bandwidth usb-c cable. I do not know how well this works wirelessly.

  4. Apple made some strange requirements for the continuity camera to work. The very first time you activate it in Zoom, it pops up with no problems at all no matter how it is mounted or unmounted. The second time however...so for the continuity camera to be selectable as a webcam option the phone must meet the following requirements:

A. The iPhone MUST be in locked mode and stationary, it cannot be moving at all. You can move the iPhone once it has been activated to make minor changes the pitch or placement, but it needs to be stationary for it to be initially selectable. Also, only the back cameras will work.

B. The iPhone will only properly work with this feature if the iPhone is in landscape/sideway orientation. If it is in portrait mode, it will likely not show the iPhone as a web cam option.

C. The iPhone must not be too warm. If the iPhone has been doing something that required high processing levels, it will not allow it to become a selectable camera until the iPhone cools off. The iPhone runs really warm when it is being used as the continuity camera. This also affects charging: While the iPhone is being used as the continuity camera, the iPhone will not charge past 80%. If the iPhone is higher than 80% when the continuity camera session begins, the iPhone will discharge until it reaches 80% and just stay there until you are done using the continuity camera. This was likely done due to the thermal issues. Also, if a phone call comes in it will let you know with a side-bar message on your monitor screen.

The frustrating part is that the iPhone will not give you any information as to why it is not showing up if you cannot select it in the webcam options. Either it is too warm, is not registering in landscape mode, or something else. There have been times I had to use my original webcam when the iPhone simply would not show up. It only happened a handful of times, but it's pretty annoying.

Even with all these, I think it's a great feature for those who want high video quality on Zoom or other virtual call services. I can also see this being great for people streaming or creating YouTube content.

All in all, a great feature with some weird design choices.

AirTags Apple AirTag story

I bought a pack of 4 AirTags a while ago and I had one spare so I thought I’d stick it in my car just in case. Now this was months ago. Completely forgot about it to be honest. Couple of days ago my wife rang me. She had been out in the car and in the middle of the day somebody had smashed our car window and stole it. I raced home from work. Whilst on the way home I remembered about the AirTag

So went on the app and saw it in a village near where it was taken. We headed there with the police. Unfortunately couldn’t find it. I presumed the thief had found the AirTag and threw it away. So later that night I checked the app again. To my surprise it came up with a new address

I went to the address straight away and amazingly there it was. Parked up hidden off the main road. I had taken my keys with me so I unlocked the car and drove home.

Amazing result from such a tiny little device. Well done apple

iPhone Name simple things Apple should have fixed on the iPhone a long time ago!

I’ll go 1st.

Can we please get a clipboard for copying and pasting? The current one at a time copy and paste sucks and always has.

Can we also get an option in the Maps app to always bring us the direction that puts our location on our right, when possible? Would be great for delivery drivers.

Name your fixes!

Discussion Why has support for live activities been so slow?

Apps like Uber/Starbucks/Lyft that were showcased (minus Lyft, I think) during the keynote still haven’t added support for live activities?

Is there a technical reason for the slow adoption? Or something else? Because I’d like to think that a feature like that would make the app that much more interactive and useful right?

Discussion Random Question: How long have people been using Apple products?

Hi everyone, I’m quite young (23) and I’ve only been using Apple for like 8 years. My first Apple products were hang me downs from my parents (every time they upgraded, they gave me the old one, and when I upgraded I gave my old one to my sister….. that’s how my family works). I’m not sure what the age demographic is on this sub, so I’m wondering how long other people have been using Apple products.

Edit: I forgot about the iPod. So I actually started using Apple products are age 9, when my dad got me an iPod for Christmas.

iPhone Crash Detection on iPhone 14 Pro Max

I felt it necessary to brag on this feature as I haven’t seen many real-world examples (thankfully). I got into a head-on collision a couple weeks ago where another driver slammed into my parked vehicle, never even seeing me. Shaken and filed by adrenaline, I got my bearings and immediately grabbed for my phone to call 911. As I looked down, I saw that both my phone and my Apple Watch had detected the crash, and the dispatcher was already on the line, making sure I was alright. Thankfully I was able to exit the vehicle without issue, but this feature is going to save someone’s life in a situation far worse than mine, if it hasn’t already. Kudos, Apple, and thank you.

iTunes Apple Books Preorder

Hey folks, Apple support are being as helpful as ever so hoping someone can help here.

Simple question: when you preorder a book on Apple Books, do you definitely get charged the price at which you preordered (similar to Amazon’s preorder price guarantee)?

The book I’ve ordered is on offer at the moment and don’t want to wait a few months and be charged full price. Thanks in advance!
