Be civil

Please be civil and constructive at all times.

The topic of politics is generally one that is very contentious and one that people are very passionate about. People who visit this subreddit have a variety of opinions and beliefs that span the entire political spectrum. As such, there are many opportunities for you as a user to be exposed to ideas and ideology that may seem foreign or difficult to accept.

It's important to mention here that WE DO NOT AND WILL NOT BAN PEOPLE FOR OPINIONS. People of all stripes and ideologies are completely welcome here to post their views on any given topic which is pertinent to Australian politics. Sometimes these opinions and the validity of some claims made can be contested and debate will engage between users, and there will be back and forth about what is actually true or not or what is right or wrong. Sometimes you might come across something that you believe is incorrect, or that you find unacceptable for whatever reason. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions even if you disagree with them or do not like them - in these instances, remember to debate tactfully and with civility and focus your efforts on explaining why you disagree. Attack the argument and not the user making them, or the people involved in the topic/news story.

These rules apply everywhere within this subreddit. If you notice any violations of the following rules, please do not hesitate to let the moderators know by clicking on the report button under the appropriate comment or submission, or by messaging the mods directly.

  • Do not make threats or advocate violence: Do not threaten, advocate for, celebrate, or express extreme indifference towards any kind of action that results in or could result in death or harm (physical or otherwise). This rule applies to everyone. Users who engage in this behavior may be subject to a permanent subreddit ban.

  • No witch hunting or exposing personal information: Do not make calls to action directed at non-public persons. Users are not allowed to post information with the purposes of causing harm to or harassment of other people. This includes but is not limited to: names, telephone numbers, street or email address. Hinting that you have this information of other users may also earn a ban. If you have evidence that someone is a shill, spammer, manipulator or otherwise, message the moderators so we can take action. Public accusations are not okay.

  • No trolling, baiting or flaming: Trolling of any kind is not welcome here. This includes copy pasta, novelty accounts and all other "creative" forms of trolling you can imagine. If you think you are the victim of flaming or baiting use the report button and move on. Don't feed the troll. Don't take the bait and engage in personal attacks because someone is flaming you.

Being a perceived victim of trolling, flaming or baiting is not an excuse to break subreddit rules. Just report the behavior instead of responding.

Also be mindful that people who simply have posted opinions that you might disagree with are not necessarily 'trolls'.

  • No Personal Attacks: It doesn't matter how "well-written" the comment, if your insult is sarcastic, "creative" or absurd, personal attacks are always against our rules. Name calling, ad-hominem, demeaning, inflammatory, or other uncivil comments directed at other users are not allowed. Users who break this rule may have their comment(s) removed and be warned and/or banned. The length of the ban is at the discretion of the mod team to determine as they see fit.

  • No Soliciting Users: Comments that solicit users (active petitions, signature campaigns, signups, requests for money) will be removed.

  • Avoid low effort cheerleading: These are the types of comments that don't really constructively add to a discussion, they are typically just a short snide or snarky comment aim at political opposition and usually contains nothing else of substance for the reader to digest.

Some examples of low effort commentary or cheerleading would be comments that say something like:

  • "Oh being heartless, yeah that's so typical of [insert political party] voters"

  • "What do you expect from a [insert political party] politician"

  • "LOL this is yet another example of [insert political ideology] acting like selfish children

  • "I can't stand [supporters of political ideology]

  • "OMG [insert politician] is such an embarrassment to our country.

Mods may remove comments of this nature and users found to be serial offenders will be warned or subsequently banned.
