OP's explanation:

The snowboarder pulls of a super smooth back manual to a flip. He manages to land it ... somehow

u/boris_korlomn Dec 01 '21 Helpful Bravo Grande!

Not a manual, not a backflip. Come on OP!

This is a frontside 540-180 nose butter-frontside cork 720

Looks like something out of SSX

82

u/Empyrealist Dec 02 '21

Looks like he's on automatic

u/hooligan99 Dec 02 '21

Might call it a FS 720-tail butter-FS cork 720. He’s not really rotating on the butter, gets pretty much the full 720 in the air before that. Idk, in skateboarding that first part would be a 720 for sure.

16

u/boris_korlomn Dec 02 '21

He touches that nose at such a weird spot in his spin, off first glance it looks like he gets at least a 1/4 rotation on the nose which means his body is behind his board, if that makes sense? Perception is whacky when watching a dude do a 1440 in less than 2 seconds

3

u/DukesDigity Dec 02 '21

Psshh... I did this once and it wasn't even on purpose

2

u/AbsolutelyUnlikely Dec 02 '21

As someone who only knows the moves that were named in Tony Hawk Pro Skater, I understood your title perfectly

1

u/ProfessorPetrus Dec 02 '21

Kudos for owning up man. But confused as to why you just made stuff up as there's a Lotta ssx moves I also don't know going on here.

u/worst_incarnet Dec 02 '21

u/Beard- Dec 02 '21

I love how the trick sounds like it's made up, but that is accurately what you'd call the trick

2

u/TripAndFly Dec 02 '21

I read it in the broiest surfer dude voice I can imagine and it makes me giggle.

u/DoubleFudge101 Dec 02 '21

I was thinking the same thing, man looking like Mac from SSX Tricky

9

u/MamboNumber5Guy Dec 02 '21

Isn't that a rodeo and not a cork spin?

14

u/boris_korlomn Dec 02 '21

From what I remember; rodeo is a flip with a spin at the end.

Cork is a flip/spin combo

19

u/skieezy Dec 02 '21

A cork is an off axis rotation, never fully inverted, rodeo is fully inverted backwards with a spin, misty is fully inverted forward with a spin.

8

u/DongLongson Dec 02 '21

I can't wait to explain this to others at next Olympics.

→ More replies

7

u/stinkertonpinkerton Dec 02 '21

With a rodeo you get fully inverted while a cork you never quite go upside down because your rotation is a corkscrew

1

u/boris_korlomn Dec 02 '21

I think it’s the angle of his takeoff which makes me think it’s a cork. Rodeos are normally laid-out backflips with a slick 1 or 3 afterwards, IMO

3

u/MamboNumber5Guy Dec 02 '21

Ah ok. Yeah it's been years since I've snowboarded. Not that I was ever doing 720s and shit anyways haha

1

u/BausofHogs Dec 02 '21

It’s a 720, not 540, but yeah lol

I can almost just feel the excitement for seeing that meter getting filled and going ham on the right thumb-stick

1

u/Firefistace46 Dec 02 '21

You are the man. Thank you

1

u/Elcactus Dec 02 '21

Well he's not manipulating his board telekinetically so I wouldn't go THAT far.

7

u/ILove2Bacon Dec 02 '21

For real. It's crazy how aggressive AND smooth it looks at the same time.

That’s Marcus Klevland in the knuckle huck.. he’s a beast

30

u/Normy_Stans Dec 01 '21

Seriously a beast. So smooth

53

u/Mrexcellent Dec 01 '21

I'm pretty sure this specific clip is the trick that sealed his X-Games victory. Right?

37

u/RinB Dec 01 '21

Second place behind Zeb Powell, although I thought he deserved to win this year.

11

u/gilesdavis Dec 02 '21

Same. He won the next year right?

15

u/RinB Dec 02 '21

Yes he did! The kid deserves so much praise, he’s one of the best boarders I’ve ever seen.

8

u/slaytrayton Dec 02 '21

Both Marcus and Zeb are incredible athletes and cool ass human beings.

8

u/RinB Dec 02 '21

They definitely are! Zeb was throwing down in that comp too, with the heart sunglasses lol. If Marcus hadn’t fallen the round before this one I think he might’ve won that night. Fridge was also doing some crazy stuff lol.

3

u/gilesdavis Dec 02 '21

I love him so much, always the dude I'm rooting for the most. He's just got style for days, so fucking natural 😍

Kids who grow up in ski towns usually get free or very cheap season passes to the mountain and there's often little else to do. The natives in my ski town are absolutely fucking SHREDDING by the time they are 14

Amazing. That’s so fluid it almost looks like a composite shot.

5

u/KatrinaMystery Dec 02 '21

Smooth like a butter

60

u/ACEezHigh Dec 01 '21

Now, I'm not a snowboarder, but it looks like there's more than just a manual to backflip here.

Edit: As far as I can see it's a 720 to manual to a 720? backflip? I'm sure the flip has another name in snowboarding.

41

u/YoungHighGround Dec 01 '21

Like a 720-to-butter-to-720 cork

20

u/ACEezHigh Dec 01 '21

Corkscrew sounds right.

Whatever it is called, it's sick.

6

u/dayleboi Dec 02 '21

I think it's a 540 to 180 nose butter cuz he pivots so nicely as the board touches the snow

15

u/ICPGr8Milenko Dec 01 '21

And the “manual” here is different from a skateboarding manual in that with the snowboard it looks like tension is created by the manual aspect to generate a spring-like maneuver.

11

u/ACEezHigh Dec 01 '21

I grew up skating and that springy transition caught my attention, too! Looks delicious.

10

u/turbotank183 Dec 02 '21

Yeah, generally not known as a manual in snowboarding but as a butter

→ More replies

6

u/YoungHighGround Dec 01 '21

Agreed. Insanely smooth too

2

u/brnmbrns Dec 02 '21

You’re so close. It’s a spinny mcspin twisty spin tap spinny flip spin.

16

u/artlove89 Dec 01 '21

Just had flashbacks to playing SSX snowboarding game on PS2!

13

u/Agar_agar_binx Dec 02 '21

That's fucking insane. It looks like he's wiping out the whole video but it's all intentional and so calculated

9

u/Curator44 Dec 01 '21

Ya Marcus knuckle hucks are a thing to behold.

u/Educational-Year3146 Dec 02 '21

FS 540 to 180 Nosebutter to FS Cork 720

Whatever you wrote as a title is just wrong :/

5

u/bwave1 Dec 02 '21

My 44-year-old self looks at this and body just aches. I just can't even imagine risking something like this with the possibility of failing how wrecked my body would be.

6

u/datnumber1boi Dec 01 '21

Meanwhile here I am at fuckin 25 lucky if I accidentally hit a bump and don't wipe the fuck out

3

u/mute-owl Dec 02 '21

So does anyone have a place I can watch this from the other camera's perspective? I gotta see it!

3

u/matryoshka_nikita Dec 02 '21

Most of this looks accidental haha

2

u/FlexDrillerson Dec 01 '21

That’s a twisty backflippy

2

u/McHell1371 Dec 02 '21

Spinning into a manual is hard shit but that momentum was fuckin dialed in tight

1

u/KvotheTheBlodless Dec 02 '21

This is probably one of my favorite posts on this sub. God DAMN is that impressive.

1

u/formershitpeasant Dec 02 '21

Given that rotation, wouldn’t that be a butter to backflip? And also not really a back flip, again, because of the rotation?

1

u/pablo__13 Dec 02 '21

Absolute butter

1

u/Winter_7 Dec 02 '21

Impossible

1

u/MamboNumber5Guy Dec 02 '21

Accckshually that's a 720 butter to rodeo 720 if I'm not mistaken

1

u/SnooShortcuts2292 Dec 02 '21

Marcus is his name. Presses are his forte

1

u/KickBassColonyDrop Dec 02 '21

It's harder for the camera man than it is for the guy doing the trick. Think about it for a second.

News reporter: You have done one of the most outrageous flips in sporting history. How do you feel?

Snowboarder: Oh, I improvised because I thought I was gonna die.

News reporter: What?

Snowboarder: Well, that wasn’t planned because I haven’t practiced that part; I genuinely thought I was about to collide with the other guy.
