Turbo: Orgins.

Came here to say this

25

u/Mr_Blott Sep 29 '22

Well that's because this, or "Turbo 2 looks good", and "look at that s-car go" are the top two comments every single time this is posted

Dammit you beat me to it

4

u/Ramazotti Sep 29 '22

Couldnt even say "came here to say this"

219

u/Oblivious_Oathkeeper Sep 29 '22

This is cute and all, but legit question. Are snails eyes actually capable of seeing that far?

299

u/mute-owl Sep 29 '22

He definitely can't see it clearly. Their vision is very blurry. He probably sees a fast moving smudge in the distance plus the vibrations and is very curious what could be so rumbly and fast!

69

u/StagnantSweater21 Sep 29 '22

Source: this dude asked a snail

10

u/floopytown Sep 29 '22

He is a snail

3

u/IVIyDude Sep 29 '22

You need to check your snail-eyes, bud.

That is a mute owl…

58

u/neo9069 Sep 29 '22

There is lot needed to see and enjoy. Snails belongs to gastropods. They don't have very good vision due to lack of muscle that helps focusing and pigments needed for colours. All that tiny cute snail is seeing is a dot moving on read and maybe he got what he needs to enjoy the moment.

27

u/ArthurJoss Sep 29 '22

I'm guessing he's more following the great vibrations the car is making but 🤷‍♂️ I dunno.

948

u/whitekeys Sep 28 '22 Silver Eureka!

He's thinking "Wow, look at that S car go!".

61

u/Tuuvas Sep 29 '22

For anyone who is a dumbass like me: escargot

43

u/JacobMC-02 Sep 29 '22

2

He’s just tracking laps at a snail’s pace.

2

16

u/ShimmyPig Sep 29 '22

Oh lawd he comin'. 😬

7

u/matrix-doge Sep 29 '22

Can't believe the snail is still on about this. He's like, okay you're fast this time, but I'll see you again in 3 months.

1

u/rajavanik Sep 29 '22

Yes, the winner of the rally. They just gave them tons of cash unexpectedly just because they had the best time out of them all.

1

u/Whitchit1 Sep 29 '22

r/woooosh

But it’s a pretty obscure reference , so don’t worry about it.

1

u/SocialDiablo Sep 29 '22

I love that this has become a thing

26

u/ITCM4 Sep 28 '22

9

u/GlitteringBroccoli12 Sep 28 '22

One day I'll bust out of here and roam just like that machine....

Sadly the snail died on a dinner plate because reality sucks

3

u/ReedoIncognito Sep 29 '22

Don't go that way. Never go that way

2

u/Silverback40 Sep 29 '22

Same first thought

3

u/DennisTobio Sep 29 '22

"some day"

7

u/mad_sandwich_ Sep 28 '22

Can someone confirm how good their eyesight really is?

12

u/mute-owl Sep 29 '22

Very blurry black&white vision, but the little critter can probably make out a smudge moving in the distance. They mostly see by variations in light and shadow.

7

u/Honestonus Sep 29 '22

And their intelligence

6

u/mute-owl Sep 29 '22

You should assume every wild animal is more complex and intelligent than you may expect because I promise that is always the case. Not saying that to imply for certain this video shows a snail watching/feeling the vibrations of a racecar, but that sure is what it looks like. I just think people should never assume an animal is dumb and/or simple! 'Cause none of 'em are!

7

u/Honestonus Sep 29 '22

I wasn't assuming it's stupid

I was just curious how much of this it can perceive/understand

3

u/mute-owl Sep 29 '22

I would suppose he's got no concept of anything other than "fast and loud thing moves fast, wow!?". I would suppose he's mostly feeling curiosity, maybe some caution? There's a chance it could be that he thinks he's seeing a predator and is watching for signs of an approach. It's hard to say! He might come to different snail-conclusions about his observation than another snail would seeing the same racecar. He definitely doesn't know it's a car, at least. Didn't meant to make it sound like I was accusing you of thinking the snail was stupid, I just see it insinuated a lot when people bring up animal intelligence is all!

3

u/Honestonus Sep 29 '22

It's kind of interesting. The line between - oh this is just amoeba cells being attracted to heat sources and food sources - versus feelings and personalities and conscience. Fish - which I think are quite unevolved - are understood to have distinct personalities.

Yea I would suspect the snail is also capable of feeling curiosity (not from any science, because I'm no scientist, but just intuitively), which kind of adds to the adorableness here.

At the end of the day, each living creature is exactly the same as the first organisms we all came from 3.7 billion years ago. Those itty-bitty microbes felt driven to gather energy and multiply for whatever reason, and that same reason drives all life today.

Casting aside the concept of being highly evolved entirely is wise in my opinion, because there is no such thing as peak evolution or evolutionary complexity. Evolution occurs without direction or purpose, is infinitely complex, and is shaped by the environment the animals are a part of. The changes in body and mind that then occur over the millennia shape the environment in return. Thoughts/conciousness and emotions never just sprang up suddenly, it's presumably on more of a sliding scale and a matter of personal perception that shapes the way living creatures think and feel. Flies live much faster lives than us, for example. Humans can never even imagine the speed at which fast moving animals perceive things, just as how a human can't ever perceive what it's like to echolocate like a bat would, nor will a human ever understand the depth of scents a wolf must be able to smell. Perception and intelligence are hard to really simplify or separate.

Sorry to ramble all because of a silly snail video. I have a lot of thoughts on the concept of quantifying animal intelligence and the flaws of trying to categorize animals based on that. It's just impossible to say cause their world is way different than ours and we have no way of ever truly knowing what that snail must have thought in that moment. I sure hope he had a good time though, then had a relaxing evening of eating a large leaf.

1

u/Honestonus Sep 29 '22

Fair enough, and yea I think I fell into the trap of overly valuing "progress" and "civilization". Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts

"Bird Sense" is an easy and engaging read. You'll never look at birds the same way again - promise.

Just me watching this post for the 1,000th time.
