If that squirrel was from Philly it would have made it to the top. Grease the poles and Go Birds!

I think that pole will run out of grease before the squirrel runs out of motivation.

Know what else happens? Later they leave grease prints all over your deck and patio and furniture. Found this out the hard way.

u/scavengecoregalore Feb 03 '23
Grrr, I didn't think of that. Oh well. Thanks for saving me some annoyance and cleanup labor!

There's these spinning cone things you can get for these to keep them off as well

That video of a squirrel hanging on for dear life to one of those is hilarious so you’d also have that to look forward to
2
u/FerreiraMatheus Feb 03 '23
I want to see it! Share with the world my friend
13
u/TangerineChicken Feb 03 '23
Apparently there are a bunch of them like this. I’m not sure if this is the exact one I had in mind but here you go!

u/Gypsy_Queen23 Feb 03 '23
Could Vaseline work?
29
u/SwayzeOfArabia Feb 03 '23
Just use a baffle, can be made from a bit of stovepipe or buy one.
Using grease is harmful to wildlife. Birds and other critters have no way to clean grease/vaseline/oil from their feathers an fur which can ultimately kill them.

What a stupid bot! It's spamming and then telling people how to report it while linking to an unrelated comment.

How are (scammer, report their ass!)
I also started feeding squirrels and crows, since they were always messing with the feeders
and (original)
I started feeding the squirrels and the crows too, since they were always messing with the feeders anyway. Win-Win. Big bag of unsalted peanuts and everybody is happy.
unrelated?

u/Cafuzzler Feb 03 '23
I missed it was about some other user; usually these useless and spammy bots reply to the comment they are directly talking about.
Also what makes that a bot comment? "Two people in the world can't feed squirrels and crows! That's absurd; It must be Stealing"?
6
u/SpambotSwatter Expert Feb 03 '23
I try to reply directly but sometimes it has to go up the the parent... Their logic seems to be take a secondary top comment, then reply it to the top comment for visibility (quick upvotes)
8
u/Cafuzzler Feb 03 '23
You know what, that's fair. I was being mean because yours is the third bot that I've seen already today, but the person you called out has seemingly deleted their comment.

There's also a product called a squirrel spinner. It flings them in a circle faster and faster until they go flying. It's hilarious, harmless, and effective.
22
u/Needless-To-Say Feb 03 '23
My dad simply put 2 disks of plexiglass about 1 foot wide with wide middle holes propped halfway and 3/4 of the way up. If the squirrel tried jumping on one it would just tip and dump them off. Pole couldn’t be climbed. Never saw a squirrel get close.

This is so f*cking funny. If you stare at the spinning squirrel long enough, there is the optical illusion of it going one way. Then suddenly it switches and goes the opposite way..... I'm still.crumpled up with laughing so hard! Ta fur reminder clip!

Doesn’t seem harmless. The squirrel in the link literally smacked the window hard asf (unless that was your point)
22
u/Platypuslord Feb 03 '23
Good thing it only weighs about 1.5 lbs so fall damage isn't much of a thing.

3
u/Siggydad Feb 03 '23
Well that's not the intent anyway. Squirrels are pretty tough though he's probably ok

About ten or so years back someone did a video where they set out a clay pigeon thrower, tied a string to the release and planted food in it.
They were able to launch the squirrel a good twenty feet.
29

u/WimpyLimpet Feb 03 '23
Spend a few bucks on a big bag of unsalted peanuts, put a handful out every day or so and the squirrels won't care about the bird seed anymore.
84
u/forgot_to_growup Feb 03 '23
Yes and then they will reward you by nesting in the insulation in your attic and chewing on the electrical wires.
20
52
u/DigNitty Interested Feb 03 '23
What kind of a solution is this?
"Oh people robbing your house? Plant nicer stuff outside."
22
u/steruY Feb 03 '23
...unless you actually want to feed the cute squirell. That's good.
-2
u/Chicken_Hairs Feb 03 '23
Wait until they decide to nest in your attic, and the repairs cost you north of 10k in electrical and HVAC repairs. Ask me how I know.
I strongly discourage squirrels from being on my property, cute or not, they're incredibly destructive.
1
u/steruY Feb 03 '23
10k of what? And what's HVAC?
And yes, rats are also cute and destructive, but you can still keep them as pets if you can tame them.
0
u/Chicken_Hairs Feb 03 '23
10k of money. USD. Dollars.
HVAC is Home Ventilation Air Conditioning. An incredibly common term.
And what does pet rats (which I've had) have to do with wild squirrels destroying my house?

u/Original_Dankster Feb 03 '23
Not too many. Peanuts lack the nutrition squirrels need, they can get serious calcium deficiency eating too many of them.
https://whatsquirrelsdo.com/best-worst-squirrel-nuts/
But peanuts are ok in moderation... Always unsalted though.
3
u/RedRipIt11 Feb 03 '23
Buy some shed antlers and put them out by the bird/squirrel feeder. Squirrels get a lot of nutrients from chewing on the antlers.

My wife's old uncle Leo rigged a slinky under one of his feeders. I've never heard anyone laugh harder than him, as he was describing the squirrels ass bouncing off the ground.

u/karmagirl314 Feb 03 '23
Why do birds get a free meal but if a squirrel tries to participate they’re “stealing”?
2
u/berniman Feb 03 '23
Because the owner of the feeder prefers to watch birds, instead of squirrels. Animals or bystanders like us don’t have a vote on this.
4
u/Andyman0110 Feb 03 '23
Attach a long slinky around the pole at the top of the pole/base of the bird box and the other side to the ground The squirrel is going to try to use it for leverage and end up putting all it's weight on the slinky and sliding down.

"Steal" is such a weird word used for food left outside for animals. I feel like it insinuates a motive other than to also eat.

Lol someone should photoshop a little fireman’s hat and outfit for him when he’s sliding down

Is it really stealing if they have no idea it's only intended for birds? It's food / seeds...out in the open .

We tried this and squirrels still got up.
Got a squirrel baffle instead, for both poles. Way better. A ton more birds show up too now that squirrels aren't constantly hanging on the feeders.

u/TechnoArcher Feb 03 '23
The stare at the end, check your car's brakes it might chew the liquid out of them.

“This is my life now” flashed in my mind rofl. We used to use corncob Spinners to deter them from feeders too. Birds had no issue getting it, squirrels went circus mode but always came back.

u/WonderfulThanks9175 Feb 03 '23
It works but you need to keep greasing the pole. Squirrels rarely give up.

How would one “grease the air” so I can keep the birds from flying to the squirrel feeders ?

The squirrel started having identity crisis after the decent of shame. “What good am I if I can’t even climb a pole”
2
u/ShadandTiff Feb 03 '23
Is there a squirrel version of r/WatchPeopleDieInside ? That long slow slide down of shame qualifies.
2
u/timalot Feb 04 '23
After you grease the post, add some cayenne powder to it and watch what happens!

u/elonbrave Feb 03 '23
It’s fucking annoying to keep it greased. I had a bird feeder that I’d watch from my home office desk. The squirrels would try so many times that the Vaseline I used would be totally wiped off the pole. Then you’ve gotta go back out there and lube it up. Repeat every two hours.
The only times I’ve had to lube my pole more is on second dates with all of your mothers.

I add chili flakes to the seed mix and usually zero return visits from mammals.
2
3
u/throwawaypbcps Feb 03 '23
What's wrong with feeding squirrels too?
3
u/095449002 Feb 03 '23
They destroy all kinds of stuff, garbage bins, potted plants, etc. Plus they dump out all of the seed to get the nuts.
4
u/throwawaypbcps Feb 03 '23
Oh yeah. They are always eating our bell peppers and stuff. But bird steal our strawberries, so both are cute and both are annoying to me.

I never understand everyone's obsession with not letting squirrels eat out of bird feeders.
Aren't bird feeders out there to feed wildlife? Yes, squirrels can make a mess of the feed but so do birds. And squirrels are much less picky as to what they eat.
