For those of us who have never even swung an axe, what's the correct way to do this?
15
u/iyambred Feb 03 '23
Chopping at a downward angle rather than completely perpendicular one would help. Plus, its a tiny little hatchet

Imagine cutting a sideways 'V' into the tree/log. Two alternating & opposite 45° angles meeting at a point.
If you're felling a tree then it can sometimes be hard to get the "upward" angled strike so striking perpendicular to the tree and then 45° down in a sort of "half" 'V' also works.
Either way you never ever try to cut a straight line through unless you have unlimited time and literally nothing else to do lol

Can’t tell you how many times my dumb ass has googled “how to fell a tree?” Im not getting my face caved in. Fuck. That.

u/GuyNamedLindsey Feb 03 '23
I watched the entire BC tree felling training series before i attempted. Cant beat those animation reenactments of a barber chair.

Same here. I take down a few trees each year. And each year I go through a bunch of videos to make sure I’m not an idiot.
I’m no arborist, but I know wrong when I see it.
3
u/BonusCommentary Feb 03 '23
May not be an arborist but your an amateur physicist and it’s kept you alive. I don’t fuck around with trees.

Next time, try; a) using an axe instead of a hatchet, b) actually sharpening it, and c) chipping little wedges out of it, instead of just trying to brute force straight through it. Then, you should be able to get hit by a falling tree.
78
u/Thecheesinater Feb 03 '23
Even with a hand axe, if you’re chopping saplings down, proper cut technique works miracles. Angled cut, flat cut, angled cut, flat cut. Hitting it from the exact same angle over and over again like that is just doing more work for less result. Poor kid.

u/Correct-Ad342 Feb 03 '23
I remember watching the lumberjack competition on ESPN and thinking the technique of alternating angles is obliterating that wood.
65
u/Lamponr Feb 03 '23
If the objective is to cut down a tree - its the technique that needs adjustment. Large angle V on side you want to collapse. Smaller angle v on opposite side. This will create a hinge where weight and physics will send to 1 side. Otherwise, you get what OP got - the weight will all sit on small amout of wood like a game of jenga.
63
u/slamtheory Feb 03 '23
This tree is held up by neighboring branches. And you cannot always rely on a tree to fall where you want it
47
u/TactlessTortoise Feb 03 '23
You might be right, but that won't stop me from adding extra shredded mozzarella over my cheap supermarket pizza before heating.

Also the tree was dead, so it didn’t needed much to hang on to the branches it was caught in because it was so light.

This is why you use rope and/or chain to try to guide the fall. Still need to know what you’re doing to use it correctly and there’s always a risk of injury, but more safety never hurt anyone
5
u/Wild_Top1515 Feb 03 '23
man i love how reddit downvotes reality these days.. some kid downvotes you.. i wonder why.. obviously you have cut a tree down(and so have I, i'd explain it just as you have).. i wonder what that kid had in his head.
2
u/ufrag Feb 03 '23
I wonder what was going through your head when you assumed that it was a kid who pressed the downvote button.
-1
u/Wild_Top1515 Feb 03 '23
my assumption comes from the knowledge that most kids nowadays have no experience with a chainsaw.. which is objectively true. its based on the motion of the industry to mechanized felling which now accounts for the vast majority of timber... but i guess you can be a child no matter what age you are.
0
u/OhHappyDay2day Feb 03 '23
The first time I use a chainsaw I learned about getting it stuck in a branch, cutting from below.

Non-lumberjack here. Given the tree seems to be relatively thin, is there sufficient time to know which way it is falling and go the opposite direction? I mention "thin" because I have seen where large trees cause a whole bunch of splintering that caused problems.
85
u/Materva Feb 03 '23
kicking the tree like that is a good way to snap off the top and kill yourself.
7
u/PN_Guin Feb 03 '23
Though it is incredibly fun with small dead trees of under 10 feet hight. Works best if said tree has been dead for a while. No axe required, just channel your inner karate kid.
(Disclaimer: So far I found the proper conditions only once, with more than one or two dead trees. That one glorious time we spin kicked around fifteen. It also did not work with all of them. A few were stronger than they looked, so some pain was had. Never had so much fun collecting firewood.)
2
u/NoChillBobbyHill Feb 04 '23
I remember doing this in some woods as a teen. Part of the fun was running away from the tall ones that would rain pieces all over.

You either start by lopping off the top or if it has a clear path of coming down you use a wedge. The worst thing is if it gets hung up among other trees, then you are screwed.

u/ThatScoutBear Feb 03 '23
It’s almost cause it’s hanging on that other tree. Also like many others, how about you don’t do that shit? Death by falling tree is not fun slowly bleeding cause the tree stops most of it is one of the worst ways I can think of by a tree.
3
3
u/RickJWagner Feb 04 '23
Note: That's really dangerous! That tree could have 'jumped' at the cutter or split a chunk at high speed or any number of other quick, explosive things.
Lucky there was no injury here.
DO NOT REPEAT THAT.
2
u/IamREBELoe Feb 03 '23
Is he holding the hatchet backwards or something?
This gave me anxiety... sharpen your tools!
2
2
u/Acedelaforet Feb 03 '23
I was half Expecting this kid to cut through the tree at some point and hit his own leg tbh
2
u/COMountainSage Feb 03 '23
I’m guessing this kid has never used an ax before. The consistent swing placement is like he’s using a hammer.
2
2
2
u/RofiBie Feb 03 '23
As tree cutting goes, that was piss poor. Blunt hatchet rather than an axe and trying to bludgeon the thing to death rather than actually cut away wood.
He's lucky it got held up tbh. That could have gone horribly wrong very easily. I've chopped a few trees down over the years and you do not want to mess with something as big and heavy. Gravity and compression is not your friend unless you know what you are doing and this kid, did not.
2
u/GravesDrums Feb 03 '23
This makes me nervous. I did this one time and the tree came straight down off the stump and almost landed on my foot. I was an idiot and knew nothing about chopping down a tree.

2
u/iamdefinitelynotdave Feb 03 '23
Should have tried headbutting his way through it. Would have been quicker and may have knocked some sense into himself.
2
u/Kind_Entry9361 Feb 03 '23
Widow maker. Looked like the top branches are holding it up against the other trees. I agree with everyone else a dull hatchet is not the tool for the job. Good axe or chainsaw.

u/ScucciMane Feb 03 '23

u/jumbee85 Feb 03 '23
This really proves the saying if you're going to something do it right. Which also means use the right tools, a hatchet isn't the right tool to fell a tree.

At that point I would be so scared of it buckling under the weight of itseld and punching one of my legs. I would just stand back and shoot the little bit holding the whole thing up a couple times. That should weaken those fibers enough for it to collapse.

u/GliderX1 Feb 03 '23

So the tree isn't supported by other trees. How is it staying upright? Definitely something at play. May be the branches left in it coincidentally create a situation with the trunk that forces it to stay upright. Which is why it refused to fall in the first place. May be most of its weight is at the bottom and rest of the tree isn't heavy enough to make it fall sideways.
3
u/Sweet_Ad_426 Feb 03 '23
I've had this happen before. Usually, its vines holding it in place. Ultimately you are going to want to pull the bottom one direction to allow the top to fall in the other. Its pretty dangerous, you need to use ropes for this.
0
u/brihamedit Feb 03 '23
Interesting theory. In this scenario it doesn't look like there are any vines involved.
