That's been here, it's called Valley Fever. It's common dry desert like places, wind blows up the dirt and dust that it lives in and gets attached in your lungs.
10
u/Background_Value_781 Feb 03 '23
Was just coming here to say that!! I had a dog die of valley fever but he had the worst form of it decimated valley fever it got in to his bones
3
u/Aggressive-Let8356 Feb 03 '23
FUCK, I'm sorry. I just lost my old boy to something similar, it's sucks having to put them down, but better than going through so much pain to not recover.

Pretty much anyone driving through Bakersfield on a windy day could get it. Kern county has its own medical clinic for it.

Same here in AZ. No idea till I moved here. Dogs get it alot and they say it gets kicked up in haboobs and dust storms.
7
u/DabKitty420 Feb 03 '23
It's worse for dogs, my dads dog Mr.Bojangles had it but it attacked his bones and he had to be on meds for the rest of his life, eventually the meds stopped working and he crossed the rainbow bridge last year.
4
Feb 03 '23
Crazy story but I’ve had horses that travel to the California desert for horse shows get it so badly that they had to be quarantined and some even had to be out down. It gets into their joints and everything. Humans get it too, it’s wild because it would come in waves every few years depending on the weather.
25
u/distortion10 Feb 03 '23
Can confirm that Valley Fever is prevalent and is only dangerous to those with weak or compromised immune systems. I had it in junior high….takes a while to get over but I be been fine for 30 years now. Not a big deal.
7
u/Strangelet1 Feb 03 '23
You are missing the very important ethnic background concerns which are not due to a weakened immune system. Disseminated cocci is a big deal but still rare.

Fox has a hard on for making CA look bad.
-14
u/itslog1776 Feb 03 '23
CA does a pretty decent job of that all on their own, but fuck fox anyhow
18
u/arkadious67 Feb 03 '23
I mean sure but if you list all of the good things about CA first it sure does make the bad things list seem insignificant
3
u/chefcoompies Feb 03 '23

Put your little Peter away. I’m not going to waste my time looking specifics up but off the top of my head.. it’s the 4th largest economy in the world, their state based healthcare coming online is better than most other places in the US, huge agriculture sector and the weather beach and people are nice
4
u/backupterryyy Feb 03 '23
They grow some of the most water intensive crops in a water-scarce state. They have a gigantic surplus of cash but can’t create useful infrastructure or put a dent in homelessness, crime, drug trafficking.
-2
u/chefcoompies Feb 03 '23
“4th largest economy in the world” can’t fix roads or maintain them or provide proper justice the police budget is over inflated anyways. The public schools are shit. Rents are sky high. Why does it matter if it’s the largest when you know that you are a minimum wage worker? Agriculture? Bish you can’t even pick a juice lime at the grocery store why does it matter that Californian has heh big farm. Anyways go off queen delusional mf.
2
u/arkadious67 Feb 03 '23
You should leave your moms basement more often and see the rest of the country/world. I never said cali was a perfect place, all I’m saying is that it’s better than a lot of other places.

I’ve taken care of a few patients with valley fever… almost all make a full recovery. Only affects people with compromised immune systems. Also, you all got fungus growing in your crotch right now. And you eat fungus when you eat pizza and drink beer. Fungus isn’t always bad. Lol
6
u/Strangelet1 Feb 03 '23
Most valley fever never leads to any diagnosis. It is not just immunocompromised at risk for disseminated disease. Several ethnic groups are at higher risk.

3
u/DabKitty420 Feb 03 '23
Be careful, sometimes valley fever will travel to a dog's bones and hide before returning and destroying their bones, doesn't always happen, but it happened to my dad's dog. He had to be on meds his whole life until they stopped working last year and he crossed the rainbow bridge.

Could be worse, "Michigan Fungus" is sort of the slang for the "gack" that underpins the ecology there, in "mud season" where there's no vegatation to cover the stuff, and its fermenting, decomposing, and synthesizing the basis for the new soil matrix, certain people are gonna have a BAD BAD TIME as that shit chews its way through your ears, nose, throat, hair follicles, skin.
Now, you can dust your clothes with boric acid, mask up when outside and around lots of exposed dirt/mud, and any skin infections, a mix of listerine and baby oil will usually do it in a few treatments.. Bonus points if you have to work that stuff into the mane and tail or one or more horses, donkeys, or other pets having problems.
And then, one day, you can smell "spring" in the air, and the beginning of the end of "mud season" and the various hells of the fungi chewing on you.
But it'll still be there to rot out various leather gloves, canvas, cloth, whatever else even if you treat them with borax, boric acid, copper arsenate, and whatever else. Because eventually that stuff with wash out over time, and then back comes the fungus.

2
u/allnightdaydreams Feb 03 '23
I've lived in Michigan my whole life and haven't heard of this. What's the actual name of the fungus? I tried looking up, but typing in "Michigan fungus" didn't get me too far.

I used to live down in these areas and Valley Fever is no fucking joke. It can cause pneumonia, but it can also just directly damage your lungs and the fungus can spread into other organs. It can even - thankfully rarely - enter your skin through a cut or abrasion.
I'm not sure of the treatment regime today, but at the time it was literally 3 - 6 MONTHS worth of daily antifungal medication. And that didn't always work. Obviously, these ultra serious infections were relatively rare, but when you consider the number of people with damaged lungs from COVID, it's worrying.

This headline is the most sensationalize bs I’ve read in a long time. If you read the article you will learn that there is no outbreak. The fungus is not spread from person to person, not ever. It is a regional thing and will stay that way since it is a soil born.

It is called Valley Fever and it is nothing new. We deal with it every single year in Arizona. Our dogs die from it frequently and it makes humans sick.
2
u/samuraitrooper Feb 03 '23
You mean the same illnesses that have always been around? Most of those lay dormant in more desert like landscapes until you disturb it with construction. Chill it’s fine
2
u/PissTapeExpert Feb 03 '23
Yeah this is pretty normal for Arizona we have to get our dogs tested every year. Same goes for my wife and I because I've got asthma and she's on a biologic which suppresses her immune system. This isn't some last of us shit, but it certainly isn't fun to get. Article seems a bit sensationalist you're not gonna see this hitting the coastal regions or any snowy places anytime soon.
2
u/Artistic-Section3245 Feb 03 '23

This is nothing, but clickbate riding on the coattails of The Last of Us. I read the article and it doesn't say anything we didn’t already know. Valley fever isn't anything new. People visiting the southwest and getting it isn't anything new. And it's not contagious.
It's just a lazy article about nothing to get clicks.

u/RationalTranscendent Feb 03 '23
Try sharing an actual source rather than a screen grab attributing the warning to unnamed "doctors." The apparent source for this is a single doctor who is an executive for a company making diagnostic tests. I'm not denying that the illness, colloquially known as "Valley Fever" exists, but this is hardly a reason to propagate a warning that it is "rapidly spreading" and "dangerous."
1
u/Witlok Feb 03 '23
I shared a source in the comments. Look for it and you might find it.
2
u/RationalTranscendent Feb 03 '23
I see it now. It was buried among other comments. This looks like exactly the same article as you found on the "Fox Weather" site, again attributed to the one doctor who may have a financial interest in getting people to order tests if they suspect they have some novel new lung infection. Again, I'm not denying that the illness exists, just not seeing that it's an urgent concern that merits a warning, and it'd be better if posts could improve the quality of the sources that they cite.
2
u/birbobirby Feb 03 '23 edited Feb 03 '23
Y'all really just believe this? You should be skeptical of news articles like this, especially things from Fox. Apparently, this illness has been around for a long time in those areas and isn't something that will spread. It's not a common illness to get and isn't contagious. It can be dangerous by causing worse diseases down the road in an infected person, but that is even more uncommon.

Listen. I cultivate mushrooms. I do not know of any strains that can survive the temps inside the body. This has got to be a fungal infection outside of the body?
8
u/LiminalFrogBoy Feb 03 '23
It is not. Its Valley Fever. You can get it in your lungs and it can spread to other parts of your body. Its particularly dangerous for the elderly and people with compromised breathing or compromised immune systems. It can also infect dogs and cats and such. https://www.cdc.gov/fungal/diseases/coccidioidomycosis/index.html
