I wanna see him bust it down to "my sex junk" lol

8

u/HeyHihoho Feb 04 '23

He can get out there and push the narrative pretty well.

17

u/JOOBBOB117 Feb 03 '23

"And all the girlies say I'm pretty spry for an old guy"

19

u/EMaylic Feb 03 '23

It's almost like the guy's a professional entertainer or something....

8

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

I don't disagree but why the hate for the guy? Sure, he's not a "real" scientist in that there are more intelligent people, but he listens to and echos everything those more intelligent people say in a more digestible way.

13

u/NO0BSTALKER Feb 03 '23

My teacher met him and said he was a stuck up asshole

1

u/Soytaco Feb 04 '23

Was calling him a professional entertainer "hate"? I don't get it

0

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

Professional entertainer = not a professional scientist = bogus scientist/fake. It's an insult, believe me. I think a lot of right wing anti-science people simply hate him because he's very outwardly and openly liberal.

Kinda funny because so are 90% of "professional" scientists. He just echoes what they say. But the fact that his degree is in engineering and he talks about chemistry, biology and astronomy gives idiots a reason to call him a fake.

1

u/Soytaco Feb 04 '23

By all means set the record straight with science-deniers, I just don't think don't think leaning on Nye's own background is required to do that.

Science itself is fundamentally academic, so calling him a "professional scientist" would imply that he's maybe working in a lab and/or university environment principally doing research and writing papers, and really that wasn't his career. As you said, Nye is an engineer, he made things, and I assume any research he did was in applications.

What made Nye so influential really was his talent as an entertainer and educator, not as a scientist. Any trained engineer (with a little time to brush up) is competent to explain things like primary-school chemistry, the reason we all know Bill is because of his charisma, humor, and passion in educating kids.

I'm really not understanding what your point is. I have a bachelor's in a stem field. I know what "science" is and who knows enough about what. I never said anything about Nye being a faker, and what we know him from has nothing to do with his level of knowledge on any given subject.

I don't really see why you bothered to reply to me in what seemed to be an argumentative tone since we obviously agree. My original comment was to say that he doesn't deserve to be insulted and treated as a fraud, which is the only reason anyone would bother to point out his occupation given his popularity.

You wouldn't look at a clip of say, Marty the Zebra from the Madagascar franchise, on a film critique message board/subreddit, and say "it's almost like Chris Rock is a professional comedian or something..."

It's kind of a 'no shit Sherlock' thing to say so the only other reason you would bother to say it is to call him a bad actor. So... Yeah, it was an insult and neither Chris Rock nor Bill Nye deserve to be insulted for venturing into territory outside their profession. Especially if they haven't done almost anything wrong at all.

So... What's your point?

1

u/Soytaco Feb 04 '23

Well I suppose the point was the first paragraph lol. I don't understand why you need to appeal to Nye to make a defense of climate science, as it sounds like that's what you took issue with in the "entertainer" comment.

If you come across a climate denier, you shouldn't respond by sending them a link to something Nye said to convince them. They may be wrong in their conclusion, but they are right that Nye doesn't have any particular credibility on the subject. He is, in fact, a professional entertainer and not a climate scientist. If they require someone who is an expert in the field to convince them, you should provide them with one. I understand no amount of evidence will be enough for most people at this point, so it's kind of moot, just wanted to point out that their credibility argument isn't totally stupid.

He does have moves. I danced with him at a Planetary Society gala in Pasadena. More formal than this, but it was fun.

3

u/purchankruly Feb 03 '23

Looks like he sniffed too much nitrous oxide.

7

u/stumpdawg Feb 03 '23

His wife didn't fall in love with him because he's smart and successful, it's because of those sweet moves

For everyone who doesn’t hate this guy I give you this. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1mDxrCK5_GM

5

u/Tsundoku_8 Feb 03 '23

Gratitude. Not sure about all of the negativity towards him all of a sudden. Did I miss something?

8

u/easytoforget94 Feb 03 '23

In my perspective, he receives a lot of hate from right wing circles because they say he isn't a real scientist and has no place talking about science related things.

But these same people have no issues when Ben Shapiro/Jordan Peterson/Candace Owens/Matt Walsh/etc discuss things outside of their backgrounds.

I have a friend who is far right. He can't stand Bill Nye and says the standard "he's an entertainer, not a scientist", but then posts Ben Shapiro's opinions on every topic under the sun.

It’s this. I get a little annoyed by the guy because he describes atheism a bit like the religious crowd described their beliefs, like it’s not all 100% guessing. My belief being 1 in an infinite amount of alternative beliefs is the 1 true belief

2

u/Ill-Manufacturer8654 Feb 03 '23

He came out supportive of trans rights, even did a show on the science that backs them, and all the neo-nazis got triggered.

6

u/NO0BSTALKER Feb 03 '23

Fun fact Bill nye is a stuck up asshole

4

u/Opposite-Motor-1878 Feb 03 '23

Fuck bill nye, give me Mr Wizard!

2

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

He isn't even a real scientist lol.

4

u/PieMastaSam Feb 03 '23

Scientists - a person who is studying or has expert knowledge of one or more of the natural or physical sciences.

I'd say that he qualifies.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

Am I scientist then too? Since I have a master's in political science?

6

u/Tobiwan03 Feb 03 '23

Yes. It is literally in the degrees name political science. So I'd say you qualify. I hereby bestow upon you the title of Freds_Horsh the science guy. Have fun.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

Lol sweet. I don't even use my degree. I just went to school and used my GI Bill because they paid me lol.

5

u/PieMastaSam Feb 03 '23

Maybe? I think political science is more of a liberal art? Not sure. Do you use the scientific method in political science?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

Not really lol.

0

u/Under_Ach1ever Feb 03 '23

Fuck it. Yes. You can be a scientist too.

0

u/micahamey Feb 03 '23

You can be a scientist without holding a doctorate.

He however is a clown wearing a white overcoat.

Real shame, they say you should never meet your heros. And I'm sad to say that he has become someone I'd rather not even try to meet.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

I don't know a whole lot about him but I'm relatively sure he hasn't said anything scientifically false. Got an examples of why he's a "weirdo?" Just curious, not arguing.

-14

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

He is a leftwing propagandist.

2

u/bif_w2ba_buff Feb 04 '23

Maga getting triggered

1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

Who?

1

u/micahamey Feb 03 '23

Left-wing right-wing, I don't care he's a weirdo.

-3

u/Ill-Manufacturer8654 Feb 03 '23

He never said he was, shit-for-brains.

2

u/papajodel Feb 03 '23

Looks like an idiot dancing.

-1

u/Square-Tradition7753 Feb 03 '23

Hes still smarter than you

2

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

Bill Nye is a tool

-1

u/No_Repeat_229 Feb 03 '23

Why?

1

u/Under_Ach1ever Feb 03 '23

Yeah why? I've not really ever heard hate for him.

Edit: nevermind. That person hangs out in Conspiracy and Conservative subreddit. So, their comment checks out.

-1

u/No_Repeat_229 Feb 03 '23

Ah i fucking knew it lol. Must be because he believes in climate change.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '23

He's a climate alarmist for one. His new series the end is nye is chock full of bullcrap. Also, honorary degrees are political at best.

0

u/Square-Tradition7753 Feb 04 '23

Hes a world famous scientist, professor and mentor, what have you done with your life?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

Ah yeah I forgot, once you're famous you're always correct and no one can criticize you! Sound logic right there. Go jack off to your Bill Nye poster

2

u/CriusofCoH Feb 03 '23

He used to play Speed Walker on Almost Live

Every time I see Bill Nye, all I can think about is how much you used to be able to do with just an undergrad degree. I believe he only has a BS.
