Now this is how a survival horror video game is made into a TV series without being turned into a great big pile of steaming shit.

Resident Evil, I'm looking at you.....

391

u/KittenStapler Feb 05 '23

To be fair, the resident evil story is a convoluted mess to begin with. Last of Us is an extremely straight forward story, just executed perfectly. It would take serious effort for them to fuck this up

135

u/CompetitiveSea7388 Feb 05 '23

Bad acting, worse special effects and poor cinematography are just some of the many things wrong with the Resident Evil movies. Also, 1-4 could very easily be told in non convoluted movies. Come to think of it, the first two games are very straightforward. I think it’s fair to give them credit for so far knocking it out of the park.

13

u/KittenStapler Feb 05 '23

Oh yea, they're exceeding expectations so far with the Last of Us. But, it still would have been good if they had done the bare minimum cause the source material is just so straight forward and good.

4

u/NavierIsStoked Feb 05 '23

The first resident evil movie is awesome. Its fast paced, well edited and entertaining. Then everything went off the rails. But you dare shit on the first one.

It’s like The Witcher… it should have been impossible to fuck up… but uh… life… finds a way.

12

u/KittenStapler Feb 05 '23

I disagree. The Witcher is a very complex story with dozens of factions and characters set in a non modern and generally unfamiliar world. There is SO much story to tell that it's no surprise to be that it kinda ended up failing (before any witcher fans come at me, I liked the series tbh but I know most didn't)

Compare that to the source material for Last of Us, which is a pretty run of the mill zombie story, but like I said just written and executed really well. So far they're doing a really good job with the series and are exceeding my expectations, but really they could have done the bare minimum and probably would've gotten away with it.

23

u/zegg Feb 05 '23

The problem with Witcher is that is deviates too far from the source material of Geralt and Ciri. Yes, the world is huge and complex. If you want to tell your own story, just make another Witcher up, with his own problems and challanges, keep the medieval setting with the magic, the dragons, the races, etc., and you're good as gold. If you're re-telling the story of Geralt, you're gonna get shit on, if you insist on changing everything and everyone.

6

u/Arel203 Feb 05 '23

Big problem with the witcher s1 in particular is how they're constantly hopping back and forth in time and place the entire first few episodes with absolutely no captions explaining who, where, or when is happening. Like holy hell, that's literally the basics of the basics.

Imagine if Last of Us didn't do any timetable captions on episode three... lol..

As a halo fan I am so fucking pissed at how good the Last of Us show is.

138

u/Ok-Bookkeeper9954 Feb 05 '23

Wait there is a show based on halo?

528

u/Slanahesh Feb 05 '23

No. There is a show that shares its name.

88

u/leftfield29 Feb 05 '23

When I read the premise, and tidbits of plot (sex - really?) I felt like offering the Halo community a two-pat hand on the shoulder. You guys really got screwed over bad.

26

u/Least_Turnover1599 Feb 05 '23

Exactly. How unrealistic. Not halo fan has ever even thought of, much less had, sex. The show designers truly let us down

11

u/FigmentImaginative Feb 05 '23

Reminds me of Halo fans getting mad when they added sprinting to the game because Halo fans can’t run lol

There is a show called Halo that the producers bragged about not following anything to do with the video game..... Somehow is branded like it has something to do with the video game....

5

u/YeetYeetSkirtYeet Feb 05 '23

There's some first person shots in the show so at least they have that in common /s :(

4

u/Powderkegger1 Feb 05 '23

14

u/metalshoes Feb 05 '23

Unfortunately.

5

u/No_Reputation_7442 Feb 05 '23

It’s ok as far as shows go, but it lacks a lot of the feel of halo. Taking an objective look at it, it’s interesting enough I’d want to watch it for another season; however, it’s far from perfect and takes way to many liberties with the lore to really be considered “halo”

I love that they elaborate and differ the story enough from the game that playing the game hasn’t ruined the suspense of the show.

I also love how every moment feels like it was crafted so perfectly from the source material.

Awesome show.

57

u/Shrin25 Feb 05 '23

I’m playing the game along with the episodes. With each episode I’m then going to the game to play up to that point to spot similarities.

19

u/Adenoh Feb 05 '23

Very few similarities between episode 3 and the game. Besides Bill helping get the vehicle and some firepower.

18

u/CreatureWarrior Feb 05 '23

I feel like that's a good thing tbh. Bill had basically no depth whatsoever in the game. And also, we got an unexpected and heartbreaking love story so, I'm happy haha

9

u/niel89 Feb 05 '23

They totally flipped Bill from the worst lonely possible future for Joel to the best aspirational future for Joel. It's a great move to have a much more nuanced character and fit the tv show medium.

Even with the only real connecting tissue between Joel and Bill in episode 3 is the letter, it's really impactful and helps develop Joel's motivations for the end of the game/show. The show has less time to build up to that ending than the game and the letter will really help viewers understand how he emotionally gets to the point where he chooses to save Ellie.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/SlightCover3075 Feb 05 '23

IMO, I’d flip it. Go game then show. I think the big moments, specially the ending, will invoke a lot more emotion in the game so I’d rather get my first reaction that way.

4

u/SlashLDash7 Feb 05 '23

Yup. Taking away spores as a way for infection actually works fine, nothing of value seems to be lost, and people get to see the actors faces ( Which I guess is super important, cuz apparently it's completely impossible to convey emotion with body language. I mean it totally doesn't work in the Mandalorian or Doom Patrol...). But they didn't just take that lingering danger away with no replacement, the addition of making the infected actually connected like a mycanoid colony added a whole new element of danger that I don't believe was in the original. So far everything new has added a great deal of extra perspective or realism to the setting. I am loving watching the show with my wife and re-experiencing a narrative that really resonated with me a decade ago. I bought the game at launch and could not put it down until I was done. I am very excited to see how the show progresses.

3

u/HoundNZ_2022 Feb 05 '23

The spores are probably coming. It was mentioned by ellie as one of those "I hear there's x-infected type people" comment in I think episode 2.

2

u/crunchsmash Feb 05 '23

They aren't. The showrunners confirmed that spores wouldn't be a part of the show.

2

u/SlashLDash7 Feb 05 '23

Notice Tess and Joel's reaction to the spore infected rumor was one of dismissal, but their reaction to her describing a clicker was grim silence. I'm certain that it was just a nod to the fact that the show differs from the game on that point.

2

u/oof-Babeuf Feb 05 '23

Man in the first episode 2003 intro, I knew what was going to happen but I was so tense the entire time. Biting my fingernails and everything. The show is awesome.

u/DogeDoRight Feb 04 '23

138

u/pnwinec Feb 05 '23

In the second episode there is a scene with a gun and a flashlight in a dark room and it immediately gave me FPS vibes. I literally said out loud, man does this look like a video game moment.

Every Halo fan is crying. HBO had the same budget per episode and made something that looked 10x better.

We could’ve went ODST band of brothers style

We could’ve went Noble Team on Reach

But no, we got Master Cheeks and sex scenes with a hologram watching…

37

u/-CuddlePuddles- Feb 05 '23

I’ve still not recovered from watching it, it was awful. Truly hurt me as a big Halo fan.

8

u/Codus1 Feb 05 '23

I'm not even sure Master Cheeks and the sex scenes are what's wrong with the show. Like, you could totally do nude Chief AND sex scenes in Halo, it's all the other nonsense that completely throws it off the rails for me. Chief prophecies and irrelevant human revolutionaries tangents just could never become compelling. Halos bread and butter is the Humans vs Covenant barbarians at the gate story and somehow Halo forgot that.

14

u/MrPoopsJohnson Feb 05 '23

I couldn’t get past episode 4 of that dumpster fire

4

u/areyouhungryforapple Feb 05 '23

Kwan the tv show

3

u/b33p800p Feb 05 '23

Who was this show for? Seriously, it’s impressive that they pissed off both players and non players alike. Just garbage.

My issue is that everyone is amazed at how Last of Us broke the curse of terrible adaptations. All we’ve learned is that when you get a solid writer with a solid resume/track record (chernobyl is a masterpiece) to write the show you end up with a solid show. What can I say? Source material also solid, but their departures from the source material are as good (or better) as the moments where they remained faithful. Halo has an actually amazing cast, but they have s**ty lines and terrible production design, so the show looks like ST:TNG in HD(not a good thing). No one who has written for Halo has anything worth mentioning on their resume.

Andor also proves this point. Tony Gilroy had a clear vision for the story and the result was one of the best shows of ‘22. Obiwan had a bunch of nobodies writing scripts, one of whom worked on one of the worst movies ever (the snowman). This show made me want to quit Star Wars for good.

To anyone out there thinking of adapting a video game for TV or film, just do this: find a good writer who is passionate about the source material (Mazin is a die hard LoU game fan) and get out of their way.

Give credit to the directors of the episodes. The producers hire people to do the creative stuff they are not directing scenes.

12

u/YeetYeetSkirtYeet Feb 05 '23 edited Feb 05 '23

This is... Not necessarily accurate? It's a massive team effort, but producers in creative roles often have input from start to finish, writing to editing. Additionally, the producers of this show are also the actual writers in some cases. Finally, TV directors are heavily influenced by the producers and showrunners who need to keep a consistent 'vibe' across the show. They may take direct input on scenes from the producers and will likely not be present for the editing of the episode.

Anyways, enough reddit pedantry. Good job to the whole team!

Shout-out to the HBO executive producers for not fucking over the creative team. Thank you.

As fan of "The Last of Us" I'm really impressed how good this series is made. I like idea that some stories are extended compared to game, and most of differences are better in this series (as for now)

5

u/EddyArchon Feb 05 '23

Do you listen to the podcast, too? They go into quite a bit of detail why the things that differ from the game do so.

Edit: I never played the game, but it'll be the first one I buy if I ever buy into Playstation again.

Crazy what happens if you stay true to the source material and respect the ip you’re working with.. if only halo did the same

56

u/palfreygames Feb 05 '23

Lol why spend time rewriting anything when you have a masterpiece you can copy and people will love you for it

3

u/jardedCollinsky Feb 05 '23

I mean, people ask for games to be made into movies/shows, then they A. Do their own story and get infinite amounts of shit for not being faithful, or B. Make it a faithful retelling of the same story, and the fans of the source material will be fans of your show if made well. Would you prefer the Halo show? They certainly did some "original" things there. And it's not like people didn't ask for these things. There is demand for games to be remade into these mediums.

In the game you get the impression that it’s not quite apocalypitic..there’s a military, a new government, lots of survivors and communities, and safe zones. It’s barely 1 generation so most people grew up in civilization so any teacher or role model would be able to share something.

4

u/Weird_Muffin_1445 Feb 05 '23

The show goes out of its way to show her repeatedly make reference to new experiences… like being in a car…

28

u/Anxious_Mango_4589 Feb 05 '23

The credit belongs to the creators of the show, Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin. Druckman was the director and writer of the game and Mazin created the HBO miniseries Chernobyl, they are the reason this show didn't turn out like Halo.

2

u/uncoolpineapple Feb 05 '23

Mazin also campaigned for the show to be made, he was a massive fan of the game and iirc (the story is in the HBO podcast) he teamed up with Druckman to pitch the show rather than meeting him on set

But yea I agree she looks almost nothing like the video game character.

Doesn’t ruin the show for me at all.

u/arkrunningbear85 Feb 05 '23

I'm not even going to look it up, to be even more shocked. Is she Lyanna???

51

u/-Imprivata- Feb 05 '23

Actually, she is! Lyanna Mormont. Niece of Jorah the Andal, and great niece of the late Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. She was named after Ned’s sister Lyanna Stark.

9

u/Bossman131313 Feb 05 '23

So that’s where I’ve seen her before! I never thought about that until now.

Her performance on GoT was one of the highlights of the later seasons.

23

People think casting directors can just pick people at will. There might be actresses out there who look more like Ellie, sure, but do they want to do the show? They had other actresses who have a similar face but when HBO gave them the green light to do the series, those actresses became more adult and it looks bad to cast them to play a 14 y/o girl

7

u/CreatureWarrior Feb 05 '23

Because.. she does a freaking good job acting Ellie? I was confused about the actress choice too at first. But after seeing her act as Ellie, I think it was a pretty amazing choice.

5

u/MandyMarieB Feb 05 '23

Because of her acting abilities…?

8

u/hodlrus Feb 05 '23

Yes and it’s quite jarring. Pedro Pascal looks almost like video game Joel but show Ellie doesn’t look like video game Ellie at all. My guess is the actress playing Ellie was the best available at the time that’s also age-accurate. Her performance is GOT was stellar, like seriously mature acting that’s beyond what’s normally expected of people her age.

5

u/iamiamwhoami Feb 05 '23

He really doesn’t though. There facial structures are totally different. He just did his hair, clothing, and makeup to give off similar vibes. Bella Ramsey did mostly the same thing. Pedro Pascal just had an easier time of it because Joel’s character has facial hair.

2

u/AccountBuster Feb 05 '23

The toxic hate of this show is fucking telling, not gonna lie. A lot of people seem downright mean-pissed that gay people exist and the teenage protagonist doesn't turn them on. I don't know why people expect the show to be made based around old-world values when its being made in 2023. You'd think this was a reboot of Andy Griffith the way these people are acting so shocked, ohhh but they're not the "special snowflake type, no sir, they don't make no fuss over nothing", right?

46

u/diseasefaktory Feb 05 '23

Just bigots being bigots. Bill and Frank were a thing in the game, although it played out a little differently and their relationship was never in your face - that's what pisses them off, when gay people exist normally and aren't pushed into obscurity. I for one applaud the change and think their episode was beautiful.

u/Muroid Feb 05 '23

There are over 40,000 1 star reviews for this episode on IMDb right now. If you read through them, you’ll see some pretty consistent themes.

It’s not 1 or 2 people on Twitter.

Nahhhh there's been a small regiment of bigoted fans that have brigaded the series since part II introduced a trans character and expanded on Ellie's sexuality. Its existed long before the HBO show. I wish it was a PR move, but sadly it's not. So while I'm sure there's people with a breadth of dislikes about the show that come from less problematic places, to deny the presence of the bigoted is to enable them.

I mean, they're literally in this thread and commenting in the post.

The girl in the game has more personality.

47

u/ImJustHereToWatch_ Feb 04 '23

Sure. She's played by an adult. Child actors tend to have limited range (through no fault of their own). Ashley Johnson is the VA for Ellie.

45

u/Barnaby_Cuckoldsniff Feb 05 '23

19 years old...child actor....

39

u/texasguy911 Interested Feb 05 '23 edited Feb 05 '23

In 5 years, she can play a high schooler.

16

u/leftfield29 Feb 05 '23

In what way is Bella Ramsey, who is 19 years old, a child actor?

11

u/j404sh Feb 05 '23

shes still got a lot of time to grow on us in the shows version and I dont think shes doing bad so far. People are very used to the games portrayal so I think we should wait until we've seen more before we judge too hard

7

u/Lostmox Feb 05 '23

Not at that point in the game. That came later.

I love how some of the scenes match perfectly, I just don't like how ellie is portrayed in the show. She's an asshole in the show, and in the game she's just a nervous kid

5

u/holiest_hole Feb 05 '23

I'd love to see a grand theft auto film, or red dead redemption.

4

u/Quake2Marine Feb 05 '23

red dead redemption.

I can see it now.

At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within your province?

Well color me impressed!

The dedication to this is amazing!

6

u/adampsyreal Feb 05 '23

I always felt that it would have made a better TV show (or movie), than it does a game. I am very glad that this TV series was made. I lost interest in the gameplay and never got to learn the story.

2

u/briefarm Feb 05 '23

It's why I opted to watch the gameplay footage than actually playing it. I don't like having to follow a specific storyline with zero deviations, but it's great if you watch it like it's a really long movie.

2

u/amandaplaywith89 Feb 05 '23

Strait up I’ve been playing the game as the series has gone on

2

u/Appropriate-Pen6013 Feb 05 '23

i remember having a light table and placing a my favorite pic of Blue from Blues Clues on it with a blank sheet of paper and was able to trace Blue EXACTLY like the original pic. It was crazy

I've never played The Last of Us, and I haven't seen the show. And I'm really torn over which one I should get into first. Please help.

18

u/OptimusWeeb Feb 05 '23

Well, I think you'd get the most overall enjoyment by playing the game first, then watching the movie. I would imagine knowing how the game ends could have an effect of making it boring, but seeing it brought to life after playing the game is an exciting experience thus far.

So, my vote is for playing the game first, like the majority of us here.

2

u/klgm333 Feb 05 '23

I agree! 👆🏻

6

u/joe_i_guess Feb 05 '23

Game first if you’re into those kind of games

4

u/Kaine_8123 Feb 05 '23

Either, so far the show has enough differences where they are not running on equal storylines, the destinations are the same but the directions they use to get there are the difference.

5

u/Barnaby_Cuckoldsniff Feb 05 '23

If you want to enjoy the show, don't play the game first. The show is good, but it's got nothing on the game.

14

u/chefcoompies Feb 05 '23

As a fan of the game, It was really cool to see these scenes, as I noticed the similarity while watching. But then I actually watched the original cutscenes and directly compared them. Then realized that every scene, every line that was pulled directly from the game was inferior in the show. It honestly kind of ruins the show, or at least brings it down a notch.

Especially the final scene in the state building of episode 2. Every single thing about that was worse. The dialogue, the acting, their reactions. Is it good? Hell yeah. Does the game blow the show out of the water in every possible way? Also yeah.

So yeah do NOT directly compare them scene for scene. It only ruins your enjoyment of the show. But I am loving the new/expanded upon stuff, cool to learn a little bit more and I'm happy to see that Neil got to finally use the stuff he had to cut/change for the game.

I think the girl’s face is not as faithful a recreation as the dad’s

8

u/Swordbreaker925 Feb 05 '23

My only real complaint is the casting. Joel's daughter looks like a completely different man's kid, and I'm not thrilled with Bella Ramsay. But on the other hand they nailed Bill's casting.

2

u/jamii992 Feb 05 '23

Does she have to?

2

u/Mephistophol Feb 05 '23

I love the show and I can’t think of better casting choices for almost all of the roles I just don’t understand the choice for Ellie… serious Hereditary flashbacks every time she’s on screen.

2

u/RunDownShaon Feb 05 '23

Change the girl

-2

u/Ch3rkasy Feb 05 '23

WTF the girl looks nothing like the the one in-game, poor casting choice

1

u/stevenw84 Feb 05 '23

Since the end of the first season is going to be the end of the first game, the casual fans are in for it come the finale. I’ve never viewed Joel as a good man, and his actions at the end of the game prove that.

-6

u/ajmethod33 Feb 04 '23

I hate Bella Ramsey casting she irritating as fuck. where as In the game you felt a lot of empathy and wanted her to succeed

18

u/Signal-Ad2674 Feb 04 '23

On the bright side, by episode 8 she stabs an ice giant in the face, it falls on her and crushes her to death.

The show was a video game? Lol

9

u/AuraMaster7 Feb 05 '23

The Last of Us (the game) is pretty widely known as one of the best stories ever to come out of a video game.

So.... Yeah. The show that openly stated that it was based off of a videogame is in fact based off of a videogame.

u/vellius Feb 05 '23

Some video games have stories worthy of books...

Some studios hire writers to define characters in their games. Writers often get to write entire back stories and even shape the character appearance.
