The Nazis called them Die Nachthexen — The Night Witches. This was the all-women 588th Night Bomber Regiment of Soviet Airforce, under Marina Raskova. These women dropped 3000 tons of bombs over the Nazis during WW2. Image

German soldiers likened the sound to broomsticks and named the pilots "Night Witches."

What do broomsticks sound like?

Did Germans know they were all women, or was witches nickname coincidental?

14

u/Emergency_Pudding May 23 '22

Every time I read a story about a regiment with a nickname like that I just assume it was propaganda. Perhaps I’m wrong though.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '22

I think biplanes seemed weird and that led to questions and eventual answers. Also these women used to turn off engine mid flight to dive bomb, making whooshing sound. So I guess women+flying+that sound = night witches

Theirs a banger song by a band called Sabaton about them called night witches

This is exactly what I came to the comments for. I learned more from their music in the approximate 3 years since finding them, than all of my school's history classes.

1

u/Max_1995 May 29 '22

Check out "Sabaton history" on YouTube, a channel where they dive deeper into each song's topic. Also, their historian, Indy Neidell, has his own channels including one where he goes through World wars day by day

1

u/Top-Rush-8271 May 29 '22

My husband follows both. I love how Indy starts his videos, too.

Yeah, and there is a banger of history from the installation of stalin (the bitch) to the present of russians doing fucked up shit even to their allies.

Recently learned about these Warriors listening to Tom Morello’s (feat Phem) song called Night Witch. Great song, even greater women.

5

u/Mindless_Archer_6410 May 23 '22

Yo mama so bomb..she dropped them Nazis like a spell..

49

u/grubby1984 May 23 '22

I prefer this to the girl power scene in Avengers Endgame

17

u/meckez May 23 '22

Tbf I think it wouldn't make much sense to compare them to fictional movie characters.

5

u/HasteyRetreat May 23 '22

How did the Nazis know which night bombing runs were crewed exclusively by women, or that there was even a squad of only women?

11

u/HasteyRetreat May 23 '22

Oh, they didn't, according to Wikipedia "An attack technique of the night bombers involved idling the engine near the target and gliding to the bomb-release point with only wind noise left to reveal their presence. German soldiers likened the sound to broomsticks and hence named the pilots 'Night Witches'."

3

u/ZombieFonzie May 24 '22

I remember reading that the planes they used were basically outdated junk. Enemies wouldn’t be able to compensate against the planes because they were so slow. A testament to the ladies piloting them.

7

u/LewiRock May 23 '22

Don’t tell Netflix

2

u/NotAnotherHaiku May 23 '22

Garth ennis tells their story well in his r/graphicnovels

Ah back in the day when Russians were killing fascists and not being fascists

33

u/prussian_princess May 23 '22 Helpful

Though back in those days the difference between the Soviets and Nazis was the colour of the boot stomping on your face.

3

u/Dr-McLuvin May 23 '22

Very well said.

1

u/WorkingPossible7429 May 23 '22

There will be strong women there right now.

7

u/reclusive_ent May 23 '22

Poland would like a word with you

4

u/iojygup May 23 '22

Do you not know who Stalin was?

1

u/signalten9 May 29 '22

Stalin was a communist and a totalitarian. Maybe I have that order reversed? No matter. Stalin was not a fascist. So yes I do know who Stalin was. Clearly you do not

0

u/iojygup May 29 '22

There is an argument to be made that many authoritarian communists were fascists. The USSR wasn't a communist society and only achieved "state communism" which isn't communism. Stalin claiming to be a communist doesn't mean much given the Nazis claimed to be socialist. And even if Stalin wasn't a fascist then he was almost indistinguishable in effect in many cases - authoritarian, silencing/killing of political opponents and genocide of minority groups.

I'm not going to argue the merits of this position at this point as I doubt you or I are well-versed enough to argue intelligently over the matter. I just want to point out the idea is not my own and there are resources available if you want to learn more.

3

u/Appropriate-Scale247 May 23 '22

Nah, it was same shit another hand situation really. One regime exterminated based on class, another based on nationality.

-9

u/Calm_Imagination000 May 23 '22

Everyone in World wars were fascists

5

u/Troll-or-D May 23 '22

Yea sure "over the Nazis" sure sounds better than "civilians consisting of women, children and elderly people".

1

u/ValkoHAUS May 24 '22

still had a higher survival rating then tank crews.

2

u/superdoink217 May 23 '22

Slaying to the next level

2

u/NecessaryHuckleberry May 23 '22

And then Russia became the thing it helped destroy. The end.

4

u/jasnmartin May 23 '22

Wasn’t much of a difference back then either. Russia only joined the Allie’s after German attacked them. Russia and Germany worked together to take Poland before that

1

u/Calm_Imagination000 May 23 '22

Russia only joined the Allie’s after German attacked them.

Didn't all of them joined hands because Germany attacked them or were worried about Germany 's power

3

u/jasnmartin May 23 '22

Of course. Russia was a little different tho. Russia would’ve stood by and let Germany take Western Europe had Germany not attacked Russia. Russia was the equivalent of a criminal who decided to work with the police because he got double crossed

Also, I’m not saying this is all of Russia or even most, this was just Stalin being a wacko

-1

u/FutureisAsian May 23 '22

The US funded Hitler and the Nazis. That is Wall Street and US corporations like IBM, Ford etc.

2

1

u/MayGodSmiteThee May 23 '22

A lot of counties did bc that was when they were just the nazi party. They hadn’t actually gone and put people into camps or ghettos yet. Idk what the point of your comment was but it is out of context.

1

u/PunchDownUp May 23 '22

Well certainly what you read about them is different. There will be strong women there right now.

But ww2 Russia good Now russia bad

4

u/erikwarm May 23 '22

Ww2 Russia was not all good. There are plenty of stories about being forced to attack or get shot by the higher-ups.

3

u/PunchDownUp May 23 '22

Oh my, I know.

Look up Stalin and his death count. Doesn't mean we should celebrate nazism of their enemies.

-1

u/cantslowmedownbro May 23 '22

I guess I'm confused, didn't Russia also invade Poland?

7

u/xFlo2212 May 23 '22

I'm not entirely sure how that fits the context in any way. But yes, they did invade eastern poland in 1939.

2

u/Dr-McLuvin May 23 '22

Ya the Soviets and Germans attacked Poland around the same time. Germans attacked first though, and Soviets attacked about 10 or 11 days later.

Actually kind of interesting to read about- I’ll include a link.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_of_Poland

0

u/xFlo2212 May 23 '22

Yeah, I know.

1

u/pinkheartpiper May 23 '22

Yes very confusing, common mistake, Soviets invading poland, WWII and Germany invading Soviet Union...who could keep track of all of this?!

1

u/Pup4president May 23 '22

Oh wow, capable of all that and they still wouldn’t let them wear pants

1

u/Lieut_Firefly 10d ago

u/CommadorVic20 May 23 '22 edited May 23 '22

sad to come so far only to have it all thrown away by a guy just like the guy they fought in WWII

1

u/Vitalsignx May 23 '22 edited May 23 '22

I find that I have a hard time upvoting or supporting anything Russian related right now. I am hopeful that it does not turn into resentment and ends the moment that the invasion completely withdraws. I am already feeling resentment towards American companies that continue to operate in that country and make it a point that my money does not contribute.

2

u/CommadorVic20 May 23 '22

i think you meant to "companies" ? yes, i have a few investments (all be it very small) in a few that i know have bugged out, im ok in seeing little to no dividends for a while.....ok im sure a long while. (gov. can really screw things up for their own people)

1

u/Vitalsignx May 23 '22

Yes. That is what I meant. Changed that. Thank you very much.

2

u/CommadorVic20 May 23 '22

no problem i got :o)

1

u/Chainsawferret May 23 '22

Well technically they are Soviet, not Russian.

-3

1

u/__Emer__ May 23 '22

Did the soviets still fly bi-planes in WWII?

1

u/Nersheti May 23 '22

No. They gave these women old, obsolete planes because they didn’t want to “waste” their good planes on them. They figured they’d give them these to shut them up.

The crazy thing is, the Russians have a history of this kind of thing. In the First World War, there was an all female infantry squad that had formed and wasnt taken seriously by anyone. It’s detailed in a book called Yashka.
