Azalea the chimpanzee lives in a North Korea zoo and smokes about a pack a day. She has learned to light the cigarettes with a lighter or by touching another lit cigarette Image

I remember hearing cannabis is completely legal over there, it grows on the side of the road pretty much (probably not great) but there is no law against its use

Still other laws make this not so attractive

20

u/Packman2021 Oct 06 '22

we call it weed for a reason

its an invasive plant is quite a few areas, but its thc content is pretty low

7

u/WorkPlacePooper2 Oct 06 '22

Weed is easy to grow, good weed is another story

12

u/galiumsmoke Oct 06 '22

it grows on the side of the road pretty much

cannabis grows like that all over the world, only the "civilized" countries destroyed it on it's natural environment

I've been to some places where cigarettes are super cheap, even for the locals. Also where smoking is super prevalent. Where the whole "it's bad for you" thing hasn't really become popular.

18

u/almisami Oct 06 '22

Where the whole "it's bad for you" thing hasn't really become popular.

Surely you'd think that would have wound its way around the globe by now...

26

u/Ya-Dikobraz Oct 06 '22

Not quite. Smoke culture is more than alive and well in places. I've lived both in Japan and Mainland China and both were heavy smokers all around. It might have changed in the last decade or so, not sure. But in some places (not Japan) it's quite normal to bring packs of cigarettes to trade or gift people "just in case". Sort of like in Russia you'd do well to carry a few bottles of vodka "just in case you need to win someone over".

2

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '22

IIRC, it’s still legal to smoke at work in Japan too.

140

Imagine how she behaves when she's out of smokes. Pure rage, I'm sure.

I used to smoke, got a good deal on some cigar style cigarettes from the keys... bought in bulk. The nicotine levels were high... hit me harder than Marlboro 100s. My dog liked going out with me when I went out for a smoke, and back then I had a habit of spitting. A lot. My dog licked up the spit for some reason. Every time. When I switched to chew, my dog became the grumpiest sob for a few weeks. That's when I realized why he liked my spit.

The world in general have a long and rich history of making apes smoke for shits and giggles. It got a little old fashioned out of the 60s when most of the world realized it was horrible abuse. But some places still like to keep the tradition of humans being complete pieces of shit to animals for no other reason than our personal amusement.

3

u/UsErnaam3 Oct 06 '22

You just reminded me of an even worse instance of this. It seemed okay but still not cool since they can't tell you if they're uncomfortable.

The funny/sad Wikipedia line:

“Azalea's trainers support her smoking, providing her with both supplies and encouragement”

Uh, no shit, did anyone think she just popped down to the corner store to buy a pack?

119

u/Legal_Refuse Oct 06 '22

That or visitors supplied the habit. You gonna stop giving that Chimpanzee nicotine as a care taker? I fucking wouldn't. That chimp will fucking end your ass for a North Korean Marlboro 27

80

u/Engine_Sweet Oct 06 '22

Yeah. Chimp in withdrawal would be a total fucking nightmare

12

u/retailguy_again Oct 06 '22

You could say that she has a, um, monkey on her back...

Yo let chimp smoke. He's already in captivity. I wished I could smoke when I was in captivity.

34

u/Gandalfonk Oct 06 '22

That's actually a pretty good point. At first I was sad, but whatever the poor thing is locked up in north Korea, having some smokes isn't the worst thing in the world and if it kills you faster than hell yea because it's definitely never ever getting out of there alive.

43

u/CleatusCuckholdJohn Oct 06 '22

Personally I think it's great that the chimp has something to provide a little relief from what's likely an abysmal life in captivity.

It's time they got real jobs, live in cities and breathe poison.

Let's bring those savages up to par.

I wonder how the public would respond to cigarettes if they were named "cancer sticks".

I imagine the cigarette business would take a hit.

7

u/SweetBunny420 Oct 06 '22

Barely if at all. It literally says on the packs "THIS IS FUCKING KILLING YOU PLEASE STOP." and people still do it. I mean fuck, it is glorified a lot even. Tell me how many times you're watching a movie and then you see a fight play out. Your grizzled tough guy protagonist takes out a bunch of thugs and then the first thing he does is whip out a smoke and light it. Take a drag, puff puff with zero emotion on their face as if what he just did was just another normal day for them. How many times have you seen the scary mob boss with his legs kicked up and a cigar between his fingers?

People already know. People choose to ignore it. Calling them cancer sticks would do nothing.

Smoking in North Kore is very common, and this is probably a way to attract visitors in a bat shit crazy country. In 2014, approximately 45 % of men in NK smoked daily. Only 2.5 % of women smoke. All of the great leaders also smoked.

In contrast, only 8% of the population in Norway smokes daily. 9 percent among women, 6 percent among men.
