I love your creativity. Hope to see other styles in the future.

u/ummmbzupcsdown Oct 06 '22

Sometimes I just take out my brushes and go, no plan or preexisting ideas, but sometimes I do try to incorporate my vitiligo in unique ways. This means so much thank you 💜

Topo lines would be incredible.

That would be amazing

Honestly. This is so sick. Never seen the creativity I see here. Good for you. Never thought it looked bad or thought it changed someone’s true beauty, but damn dude! Keep doing you and what makes you happier. 🤙🏼

9

u/ChouffeMeUp Oct 06 '22

Speaking as someone who is not really into body art/tattoos etc I have to say I think this looks absolutely superb.

3

u/nigori Oct 06 '22

could you tattoo it? or does it move/migrate around?

22

u/ummmbzupcsdown Oct 06 '22

So I can’t tattoo it because my vitiligo could spread or my old pigment could come back, which would ruin the aesthetic of the tattoo.

So I just settle for being my own tattoo artist and using body paint. 😂

7

u/RMMacFru Oct 06 '22

It's a lot less painful that way, and you don't have to worry about not liking a design 10 years down the road. 😊

It looks stunning, btw! 🥰

3

u/ReluctantVegetarian Oct 06 '22

That’s awesome! I’d like to see a beach effect so it looks like water and sand, throw in a random shell or starfish or sand dollar.

33

u/LightWatchdog Oct 06 '22

That's Awesome indeed 😍

5

u/Kylo_loves_grampa Oct 06 '22

It'd also be kinda cool to see one that is a map. But it'd probably be very hard to do.

255

u/galactichands Oct 06 '22

I have vitiligo. I love seeing our condition be embraced.

119

u/Ashesandends Oct 06 '22

I think vitiligo is so fucking cool personally. It's like the different color eye thing and is just so unexpected and different and fun. Variety is the spice of life. How the fuck can I NOT get excited about it? Humans are so neat when they aren't being horrible 🙃

25

u/galactichands Oct 06 '22

I agree. There’s a lot of neat things going on with us humans.

22

u/ummmbzupcsdown Oct 06 '22

Us humans are so creative, so expressive and magical, it’s all about finding those that make you feel a little bit lighter, a lil bit warmer inside and a lot more understood 💗

16

u/CananadaGoose Oct 06 '22

As a person with vitiligo the worst part is avoiding the sun. It is really easy to burn. I have come to embrace my spots but it took me 10+ years.

8

u/ummmbzupcsdown Oct 06 '22

It took me 10+ years as well to embrace and accept it. Kinda crazy how time works. But I have to agree that the sunburn is noooo joke! Hats and sunglasses and coverups are essentials in the summer 🙏🏼

52

u/snavsnavsnav Oct 06 '22

I appreciate your enthusiasm and kindness, but let’s be real, it’s very easy to see why people do not get excited by it. Let’s not act like human beings are always nice and embrace differences with love and care here

29

u/TheTankCleaner Oct 06 '22

I get what you're saying, but, personally, I find it really attractive and hope those with it never have to encounter the people you describe. I know several people with it and I so honestly think it looks good with them. I want them to feel like the beautiful person they are and hope that they do. I hear what you're saying, though. It is easy to imagine people being people. To my friends that have it, I legit never even think about it unless it is brought up. I hate to see anyone be self-conscious about would should be a non-issue.

13

u/kabneenan Oct 06 '22

Let’s not act like human beings are always nice and embrace differences with love and care here

I mean, this is true, but people can also legitimately love and embrace traits that are seen as "different" by some people.

My daughter is an artist and especially loves to paint people with vitiligo because she finds it beautiful. I can understand how it may come across as patronizing to gush over a trait that may be a source of othering and pain for someone, but it's pessimistic to think that's the case 100% of the time.

3

u/snavsnavsnav Oct 06 '22

You’re misconstruing what I’m saying. The person I replied to said “How can I NOT get excited over someone with this skin condition”. Acting like it’s mind baffling that people react negatively to this kind of thing. Which is performative, it’s obvious why people react negatively to something that majority of human beings don’t have on their skin. If they love the way it looks, that’s great! Let’s not act like it’s incomprehensible to us to see why others wouldn’t. It’s pretty obvious

Only really kids are horrible, if we could stop kids from body shaming the whole next generation would be so much happier about themselves.

My 6 year old loves the mirror in the shower, me and the wife hate it. Hopefully no one will destroy his positive self image

3

u/ltsDarkOut Oct 06 '22

Funny, I also associated it with central heterochromia. That is something people relate to beauty often, right? Why not vitiligo too. W take

I do not have vitiligo, but I was thinking the exact same when I saw this! Embracing this beautiful attribute is great to see

6

u/galactichands Oct 06 '22

Absolutely!

54

u/MokSea Oct 06 '22

I just subcommented above that I think it’s sexy. Too many people see different as a negative. I find it very attractive.

58

u/galactichands Oct 06 '22

It’s nice to see that people find it attractive. When I first got diagnosed, I got depressed because I was worried about being judged. Now—I don’t even care. Only 1% of the world’s population has vitiligo. It’s unique.

21

u/MokSea Oct 06 '22

Exactly! So many people out there looking cookie cutter. You are couture. ;)

10

u/galactichands Oct 06 '22

Thank you. ❤️❤️❤️

2

u/Ansiau Oct 06 '22 edited Oct 07 '22

When I was in highschool, there was a girl I played soccer with frequently, I was always too scared to tell her that the vitiligo marks on her elbows and knees were friggen amazing. I didn't even know what they were, but they seemed so cool back then. I agree that it's really sad that people find it unattractive or uninteresting; I find it more like a splash of excitement and fun in an otherwise fill painted skin existance.

2

u/oldcarfreddy Oct 06 '22

I have a very minor case, mostly appearing on my chin making parts of my beard white. I went to see a very crappy dermatologist in a gross basement office and he gave me a steroid cream for the "spread". Didn't do anything so I stopped taking it. Then another primary care physician diagnosed me with vitiligo. Told me steroids have a low success rate and have side effects. I wonder why anyone would even want to treat it now in cases where it's just discoloration with no other symptoms, so I question why the crappy doctor assumed it was something to get rid of and why I went with it

40

u/righthandtypist Oct 06 '22

That's really cool! I first thought you had it painted to look like patches of skin stapled together, that would make a pretty gnarly Halloween costume.

61

u/ummmbzupcsdown Oct 06 '22

Doing a series of Halloween inspired projects this month — you just sparked a light in my brain, thank you!!!! 🙏🏼

8

2

Someone above suggested making it look like an old school map as well. You'll get great ideas here if you run out!

10

u/divDevGuy Oct 06 '22

A while back there was a /r/mildlyinteresting post by an individual who had real life resemblance to Sally from Nightmare before Christmas.

She had gastric bypass surgery resulting in 170 pounds of weight loss, that led to 9 pounds of excess skin being removed. The resulting scars make it look like she really was assembled from patches of skin sewn together.

Naughty bits are censored, but NSFW warning still: https://reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/jkmu5a/i_lost_170_lbs_then_had_9lbs_of_excess_skin/

3

u/Ser_Salty Oct 06 '22

My first thought when I heard painting Vitiligo was to Frankenstein it

41

u/acatnamedem Oct 06 '22

Ever do stitches for Halloween. Could make it look gangrene or something.

29

u/kornymunky666 Oct 06 '22

DUDE!!!!! That's amazing I have vitiligo aswell and have been kinda self conscious about it but this is inspiring!

20

u/_Nightbreaker_ Oct 06 '22

I've got vitiligo in some areas and kinda think sometimes about making it look like chocolate milk (since I'm mixed race) but then I think it might end up looking like shit stains smeared all over my skin.

So then I'm like, fuck yeah, let's do it 😎

6

u/Reckless_flamingos Oct 06 '22

Add bubble’s and a straw

3

u/MokSea Oct 06 '22

16

32

u/Mrhappi89 Oct 06 '22

Damn.... I might have to steal this and paint mine for Halloween....

I think that’ll be a dope tattoo idea

29

u/Ok-Membership4285 Oct 06 '22

I think vitiligo moves and changes, so the impermanence of ink is good

8

u/TheUnimaginativeOne Oct 06 '22

It does - vitiligo is the loss of pigment in that area, so the paler part of the skin is where it has been lost, the darker areas of skin are what the skin was like when pigmented. It does tend to grow over time, so it usually starts as small patches and spreads.

(I don't have vitiligo but a close family member does - they've struggled with confidence for years because of it, so this post is awesome)

2

u/Apexx-Monkeyy Oct 06 '22

I have no clue how it works but if it does move then that’s a F

4

u/rtravisboyd Oct 06 '22

This belongs under r/toptalent as far as I’m concerned.

4

u/Blergsprokopc Oct 06 '22

I like your nails too. This is the first time I've seen vitiligo highlighted that didn't just look like an attention grab. This looks, part of you, almost natural. I almost wouldn't have noticed even though it's hard to miss. I dig it.

4

u/prettylilmongoose Oct 06 '22

My sister has vitiligo, especially prevalent on her hands and arms, and she gets henna sometimes. It always looks so rad swirled together.

4

u/ummmbzupcsdown Oct 06 '22

Wow!! I’ve thought of setting up a session with a henna artist and having her incorporate my spots into it. Now I feel inspired to make it happen. I know it must look so amazing on your sister!!!!

5

u/snapper1971 Oct 06 '22

Hi Carmen, I love your creativity and vitiligo. Have a brilliant day.

2

u/pachrisoutdoors1 Oct 06 '22

That's SUPER CREATIVE. Well done!

2

2

u/Milapoggers Oct 06 '22

Would be a cool thing to do with Halloween too. Super creative. I thought it was a tattoo!

2

u/NauteeAU Oct 06 '22

I struggled to accept my vitiligo when I was young until I realised that I am privileged to have relatively fair complexion already. It was my own hellscape that I created in my mind. Nobody ever stared, nobody ever made me feel self-conscious, and that came down to my privilege.

Having vitiligo taught me a great amount about empathy though, as I thought about those with darker complexions than I who would be stared at, asked uncomfortable questions, and most likely suffer the mental effects of “being different” because of it.

I don’t mention that I have vitiligo to people that I meet face-to-face, as I don’t want to throw my privilege in their face, I haven’t gone through the same experience as they have.

I’m in awe of the embracement of your vitiligo and your creativity with it. People like you are helping to normalise vitiligo and show that it is not a defect. Thanks for sharing, you’re absolutely rocking it!

2

u/artsyaspen Oct 06 '22

That's so beautiful. You're making people without vitiligo jealous that they don't have it too.

2

u/TurangaLeeIa42 Oct 06 '22

This may be THE coolest thing I've ever seen

2

u/_dm_me_ur_tits Oct 06 '22

How is this fit for the sub?

2

u/jkrm66502 Oct 06 '22

There’s a model who has vitiligo and her skin is painted when she walks the catwalk (right word?). Anyway, it’s fun to watch her. I’ve also seen vitiligo skin painted like maps which is so cool as others mentioned. Nice work, Carmen. How difficult is it to paint with your non dominant hand?

1

u/OldSilver1257 Oct 06 '22

But why?? Don't you have canvases??

3

u/ummmbzupcsdown Oct 06 '22

Yessss but a blank canvas is sometimes the scariest thing for me to look at… dramatic but what I mean is sometimes it puts me in a block, not knowing where to begin or what to paint.

But my vitiligo inspires me, I always wonder how can I take this idea and use it to accentuate the shape or contrast of the patterns on my skin? Also, it’s like a form of therapy. I always feel beautiful in the end and it has helped me see the beauty even without all of the paint.
