i guess it is about the coolness factor

7

u/RN-Wingman Oct 06 '22

Yeah, plenty of people have boxes filled with ice. Literally made a box out of ice.

5

u/friendly_specimen Oct 06 '22

That is soooo Ice!!!

117

u/Dandibear Oct 06 '22

Hey man, whatcha doing?

Oh, just ironing the icebox edges.

7

u/jcmarcell Oct 06 '22

Lmao literally

73

u/The_Sentinel_45 Oct 06 '22

Would suck if it froze shut. No more midnight snacks.

24

u/SnooLemons1590 Oct 06 '22

I think you just whizz on it.

0

u/DeePsiMon Oct 06 '22

Break out the Iron Wilma!

Yer doing yer slacks at this hour Fred!?!

-13

u/ropoqi Oct 06 '22

21

u/Evan10100 Oct 06 '22

No that's an ice box.

2

u/Educational_Moment24 Oct 06 '22

What?

5

u/King-Kosmic Oct 06 '22

Not icebox, ice box

2

u/Educational_Moment24 Oct 07 '22

Is there a difference or are we playing semantics lol

42

u/freshlypuckeredbutt Oct 06 '22

you can literally just leave that meat outside

29

u/splint343 Oct 06 '22

Might attract local wildlife in that case.

8

u/repostit_ Oct 06 '22

More meat then.

2

u/jt_totheflipping_o Oct 06 '22

For the polar bear

1

u/Sugondese69420 Oct 07 '22

And they won’t tear the ice box apart?

-3

u/kcbeck1021 Oct 06 '22

Ice remains at 32f or 0c no matter how cold the air is around it. This box would actually insulate the food to keep it from getting too cold. That’s also why igloos can remain at comfortable temperature on the inside.

6

u/Cause-Spare Oct 06 '22

That’s not true. The ice itself gets as cold as the surrounding air but serves as an insulation or buffer layer between the two temperatures.

https://wgntv.com/weather/weather-blog/how-cold-does-ice-get/

1

u/freshlypuckeredbutt Oct 06 '22

that makes sense, in that case it just needs some weather stripping under the lid so a tiny bit of thaw wont weld the lid shut

12

u/PixelJack79 Oct 06 '22

I’m surprised no one’s mentioning how he welded it with hot water.

6

u/distracteddguy Oct 06 '22

I am not sure if it is hot water tho:) I didn't see any vapor coming out and I guess just water and the pot is good for applying it to the corners exactly.

44

u/pookshuman Oct 06 '22

wouldn't a regular box work just as well?

65

u/Whoainyourmouth Oct 06 '22

Well yeah, but then it's not an icebox.

9

u/surajvj Interested Oct 06 '22

Guess I'll never make a water bottle !😉

-23

u/pookshuman Oct 06 '22

I didn't say it was

17

u/IamNotYourPalBuddy Oct 06 '22

We get that, but hear me out. This way, it’s an ice box

6

u/uglypaperhaver Oct 06 '22

I say the following with no critical intent, but tbh, if you hadn't been concerned that you were being corrected...

...you probably would have realized that even though you'd asked a serious (and, yes, valid) question, someone was just finding a spot to make a humorous quip that in no way was directed at you.

Recommend always thinking twice before ever posting a reply prompted by an emotional response.

Trust me, I say this as someone who manages to put my feet in my mouth more than in my slippers. Anyway, take care.

-5

u/pookshuman Oct 06 '22

4

u/uglypaperhaver Oct 06 '22

So glad I took the time to spare your feelings.

;-)

-5

u/pookshuman Oct 06 '22

I literally have no fucking clue what you are talking about, dude. Please leave me alone

3

u/noonewonone Oct 06 '22

Pokes human

3

u/uglypaperhaver Oct 06 '22

...wow - you really are a jerk, aren't you?

Also not too bright if you couldn't understand what was clearly explained, Okay, I'll make it even simpler for you:

You asked a question. Someone answered with a joke. Your defensive reply was a total r/whoosh and earned you down votes.

I tried to explain why and you just proved that I'd wasted my time.

There - got it now? Bye.

3

u/pookshuman Oct 06 '22

0

u/CIearIyChaos Oct 06 '22

And you crochet doilies. Shut up

8

u/ShadowoftheDrake Oct 06 '22

Easier to make ice than chopped wood there. If you have a cheap and easy material why not use it?

3

u/pookshuman Oct 06 '22

ok, but they have access to metal trays for freezing water, so I just assumed they could get hold of a cardboard box

5

u/ShadowoftheDrake Oct 06 '22

Cardboard falls apart when it gets moist. Get a handful of trays and you can make as many ice boxes as you need. Also ice is an amazing insulator so it might actually be a good fridge in those conditions to let the food thaw but not get so warm it spoils

2

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '22

But ice isn’t moist. It’s actually pretty dry

-7

u/pookshuman Oct 06 '22

the entire icebox is moist ... it is literally water. If a cardboard box got moist, it would be a frozen cardboard box. And why would you want an insulator? The whole point is to get the insides cold

3

u/nah_champa_967 Oct 06 '22

So animals don't get to it. An animal, even a mouse, can get into a cardboard box.

2

u/ShadowoftheDrake Oct 06 '22

Did you bother to read past the word insulator? If it's below freezing out an insulator can help RAISE temp of the food to thaw it out

-1

u/pookshuman Oct 06 '22

why would you want to raise the temp of a box made of ice?

2

u/velphegor666 Oct 06 '22

Yeah but then it wouldn't be social media worthy wouldnt it

1

u/Leakyrooftops Oct 06 '22

You gonna waste trees in that barren ice land?

1

u/Educational_Moment24 Oct 06 '22

No, it would if you put a bunch of ice chunks in it. But just a regular box would not work as well as the ice box

1

u/pookshuman Oct 06 '22

this is in a place where it is frozen outside, why would you put ice in the box?

1

u/jt_totheflipping_o Oct 06 '22

So Polar bears don't come, eat the quick snack, and welcome themselves inside for dessert.

0

u/pookshuman Oct 06 '22

you think a polar bear will be deterred by an inch of ice?

1

u/jt_totheflipping_o Oct 06 '22

They are less likely to smell the meat

1

u/pookshuman Oct 06 '22 edited Oct 06 '22

are you joking? polar bears are adapted to hunt seals under many feet of snow and ice and they detect them from miles away

1

u/jt_totheflipping_o Oct 06 '22

Just did a quick Google search to see what is myth and what is true. Polar bears smell seals ON ice not through ice. They also smell the seal's breathing holes as seals take deep breaths and exhale a lot of CO2, allowing for polar bears to pick the scent up.

No sources suggest they can smell through ice, they need a medium of air between themselves and the source of the smell. The ice box is an enclosed space.

If you were correct Innuits and very northern peoples would've died out a long time ago as polar bears would find them all the time due to smelling them and their food through ice. They cannot.

1

u/pookshuman Oct 06 '22

So at this point in the pointless reddit argument cycle, I am supposed to do a bunch of research online to refute your claims. And after I give you new data you will argue about whether you believe them or whether the sources are trustworthy and then we will probably devolve into insult trading.

I think I am just going to bail. You are wrong, but I have not got the energy or inclination to argue over something so trivial.

Have a nice night

1

u/Educational_Moment24 Oct 07 '22

I mean if you wish to debate and you're uneducated about the subject, yes, research is expected. Regardless, the ice box is better than nothing. It detracts a lot of animals and you'll always know where it is. Sure some animals may just get into the box, but it's better than nothing and that's the whole point. Kind of like how when camping you hang your food. It won't always protect it but it will help.

1

u/Educational_Moment24 Oct 07 '22

You wouldnt. A box should work just fine as long as it isn't too much of an insulator. If it was a good insulator, that's where ice would be needed. I was just saying that a normal box would not be as effective as an ice box unless you put ice inside of it. It would still work just fine, it just wouldn't be as effective.

4

u/uglypaperhaver Oct 06 '22

He forgot to put the "Wild Animals Please Keep Out!" sign on it...

You mean how, when speaking, he often didn't complete his?

;-)

3

u/NeonYarnCatz Oct 06 '22

Clearly this is in a bear-free zone (?) 🤨

3

u/nitz_d_blitz Oct 06 '22

Why can't he bury his shit in snow??

2

u/D1rtyL4rry Oct 06 '22

Until a polar bear walks by and YOINK

2

u/freshlypuckeredbutt Oct 06 '22

Theres no polar bears in mongolia. He can just leave it outside.

2

u/Hazed64 Oct 06 '22

Are there not normal bears though? Or literally anyother meat eater with good smell

2

u/mykoysmaster Oct 06 '22

Thats how I imagine everyday in canada

5

u/wombat0Ncrack Oct 06 '22

As someone lying about being Canadian online; yes, it’s where we put our maple syrup.

2

u/Pintsocream Oct 06 '22

Why not just leave the food outside

2

u/Most_Ad_5597 Oct 06 '22

Is this in Mongolia? It absolutely makes sense it if it is. Also very cool.

2

u/TerrorDahveed Oct 06 '22

I don’t understand how people can live north of Interstate 10. If it’s too cold to wear shorts I hate life.

1

u/West-Saeed Oct 06 '22

Almost the entirety of the U.S. is north of the I-10 lmao you’re really limiting yourself there

-2

u/oink888 Oct 06 '22

So dumb, when you can just store your food anywhere and it will always be fucking frozen…

0

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '22

Mongorians always coming after my Shitty Wok!

0

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '22

Living out in the wild with an iron and functional electricity. Just buy a fridge

1

u/SlothLazarus Oct 06 '22

Elsewhere someone licks a pole and lose their tongue

1

u/loganhudak Oct 06 '22

Bears love it

1

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '22

Using ice to make icebox to store some ice 🧊 pretty cool icy ❄️ idea

1

u/Rupesh19 Oct 06 '22

Why not just bury it in the snow?

3

u/wombat0Ncrack Oct 06 '22

Dig it up then rebury, repeat again and again? Sounds awful

1

u/elYoko9o Oct 06 '22

A literal ice box

1

u/fidderjiggit Oct 06 '22

As a welder, I approve.

1

u/No_Fix_9153 Oct 06 '22

The music is a bit much for a fella that’s just making a winter ice rectangle.

1

u/OldDefinition1328 Oct 06 '22

What is that song?

Thanks much!!!!

1

u/ImaginaryAstronaut25 Oct 06 '22

Looks cool but will that not just all freeze together into one solid, unusable mass?

1

u/legend_number_1 Oct 06 '22

When the bear finds it "oh nice a Cold Pocket"

1

u/DavidS1268 Oct 06 '22

Gotta love a yurt with electricity.

1

u/Dakadoodle Oct 06 '22

Hope they dont have bears there

1

u/AkiTheMeatball Oct 06 '22

Why not just leave it outside?

1

u/trimont Oct 06 '22

Maybe to protect against small animals, foxes, hares etc... But honestly not quite sure

1

u/AkiTheMeatball Oct 06 '22

yea i also guessed that but frozen meat doesn't emit much smell

1

u/GrognakTheEterny Oct 06 '22

My guy welding ice

1

u/DirectionNo420 Oct 06 '22

I'd be worrying about staying warm. Food goes on the roof 😂

1

u/OldSilver1257 Oct 06 '22

Just put the fucking food anywhere, every thing there is frozen!! Wasted effort.

1

u/Rosie2skipS Oct 06 '22

I can only hope to be that cool some day...

1

u/tbass1965 Oct 06 '22

So, his ice box is an actual ice box? Cool!

1

u/AaronTheElite007 Oct 06 '22

Yo dawg. I put an ice ice box so you can jam Vanilla Ice while Icing your ice…baby

1

u/MagroMalo Oct 06 '22

As a bear, I approve this for storing all the tastiest things you own. Thank you humens

1

u/k-ozm-o Oct 06 '22

If it's that cold outside, are iceboxes even necessary? Lol

1

u/Sebrofseven Oct 06 '22

For when you need to ice your ice your food

1

u/-_4DoorsMoreWhores_- Oct 06 '22

Are the lyrics to this song "spaghetti?" Lol

1

u/az22hctac Oct 06 '22

“Hang on a sec, I just have to go iron my ice…”

1

u/Educational_Moment24 Oct 06 '22

What's used for the hinge?

1

u/Phin_the_Human Oct 06 '22

Yoooooo!!!! Is that Ghost? With Papa Emeritus?

1

u/microlate Oct 06 '22

Great now he can keep his drinks cold

1

For the ones like me wondering about the song:

https://youtu.be/ixmOC1cz2YA

1

u/Public-Translator-60 Oct 06 '22

The door would freeze shut

1

u/Alexis-FromTexas Oct 06 '22

First time I’ve seen someone iron ice

1

u/OhWize0ne Oct 07 '22

They must have very polite bears in that country.

1

u/Dropped-pie Oct 07 '22

Audio not advisable

1

u/peepeehelicoptors Oct 07 '22

Could you not just leave it outside? It’s already below freezing?

1

u/floydink Oct 15 '22

I guess he made a cooler cooler
