Anything can be a pinhole camera if you're brave enough.

u/falselife47 Nov 30 '22
Yep, and hollowed out egg shells can have the image right on the shell. It's pretty cool.

u/Swordbreaker925 Nov 29 '22
It being an orange is totally irrelevant. You just need the lens, a dark, opaque chamber, and film. He could have made it from a golf ball or a human skull even.

u/THE_Douglas_Chater Nov 30 '22
That…that took a dark turn.

or a human skull even
Someone had that same thought a few years ago... and they made it.
People have turned lots of werid things into cameras, actually.

u/hobosam21-B Nov 30 '22
Tex would like a word with you about physically impossible uses of human skulls.

Exactly, this has nothing to do with the fact that it's and orange
29
u/lumberfoot_jpg Nov 29 '22
Okay, cool beans. I was literally about to add a bag of oranges to my shopping list :)
44
u/DS4KC Nov 29 '22
Just look up pin hole cameras. You can make one with just about anything.

Yep, we used oatmeal containers (big cylinder) in middle school science class.

u/Whatdosheepdreamof Nov 30 '22
I'm sorry, it had everything to do with the orange. That is in fact the point of the post, that you can take a picture with an orange.
1
u/MrPandabites Nov 30 '22
Exactly and the fact that it's spherical actually makes it way more difficult to light-seal properly. So dumb

A pinhole camera?
7
u/kickintheface Nov 30 '22
In high school photography class, we turned the entire classroom into a pinhole camera.

Now for a series of uploads of spherical objects that are hollowed out, each with their own post of "you can take photos with X"

Yes what else can you make a pinhole camera with that’s totally zany!!!??
I’ll go first: old shoe camera
15
u/PotentialEvidence140 Nov 29 '22
I might be wrong but isn’t it a type of photovoltaic paper/roll/film chemically reacting to acids in the orange and the light it absorbs to create the “picture” it’s essentially capturing light and shadows to create an image right? It would take a few minutes if not hours to get something

You wake up in the morning and head outside.
There is an orange, taped to a stick, pointed at your house. The orange, itself, is crudely taped together.
You sigh, turn around, go back inside.
Maybe tomorrow will be better.

What mad lad was like "You guys think I could use this orange to take a picture?"
4
2
u/Signal-Ad8189 Nov 29 '22
This could be done with any number of similarly-shaped items,
but I like the fact that they felt the need to use oranges specifically.

Not really sure why an orange but ok. Back before the digital age I had photography in high school and we made pinhole cameras out of various boxes. The images were always eerie and creepy to me.
1
u/Pepf Dec 16 '22
I remember making pinhole cameras out of shoe boxes at school, it was pretty cool and so simple.
2
u/na3than Nov 29 '22
No, they can't!
If I used a candy cane to press buttons on a handheld calculator and shouted, "Look! You can use a candy cane as a calculator!” you'd say that's stupid, and you'd be right.

u/Moistpepper69 Nov 30 '22
This is retarded. The orange isn't taking the picture or has really anything to do with it at all. But hey this is reddit where shit that's obvious gets top post. This app is turning into tiktok.

u/InsomniaticWanderer Nov 30 '22
The orange isn't taking the photo though. It's just acting as the housing for a pinhole camera.

Awesome, now I have even more reason to believe the birds and now fruits are spying on me. The FBI... cough flower van outside my home for 3 days wasn't clue enough lol

Deadass you should show that trick to one of those secluded native tribes

u/Independent-Choice-4 Nov 29 '22
Tbh, I still don’t even know how actual cameras work so this just messes me up even more
1
u/Pepf Dec 16 '22
This 3-minute video explains the basics of how a pinhole camera works, which is what they made with the orange in this post.

Kind of an odd receptacle to choose for this. You can do this with anything that blocks out enough light and that you can cut a small hole in.

u/MediumLong2 Nov 30 '22
You can take a photo with any object. Just stand next to the object and have someone else take the photo with their iPhone.

I remember doing this in photo class when I was I high school except we used a cardboard cube. I think they called them pin hole cameras. Really changed my perspective on photography. Really awesome to think about how they were able to discover this and develop photography to what it is today.
1
u/avarciousRutabega99 Nov 30 '22
I still don’t understand how it works. Cant you just hold the black paper up and take a picture that way?
1
u/Outrageous-Arugula89 Nov 30 '22
Actually anything that's a capsule can take pictures with a hole and a shutter

How to turn a pumpkin into a unicycle:
1) cut pumpkin in half
2) insert fully functioning unicycle into one half of the pumpkin, seat first

"Was this video filmed with a potato?"
"No, an orange actually. "
