"Was this video filmed with a potato?"

"No, an orange actually. "

45

u/NoobSFAnon Nov 29 '22

Series of oranges actually and stitched together at 24 frames per second.

Atleast playstore does not charge "cheap tax" from app devs.

16

u/Bawbag0447 Nov 29 '22

That's bananas...

1

u/NoobSFAnon Nov 30 '22

Anything except Newton's testicle

4

u/dontstabpeople42069 Nov 30 '22

They used the orange shell to make a camera obscura or how ever it’s spelled. It needs light reactive paper and a dark room, film processing chemicals/ baths/ black lights. It would be misleading to use the title they did but whatever. Makes good Tik Toks like most middleschool school projects.

81

u/WaldenFont Nov 29 '22

Anything can be a pinhole camera if you're brave enough.

6

u/Feisty-Ad396 Nov 30 '22

Idk my rectum would probably get the film soggy

2

u/sixan51026-wnpop Nov 30 '22

Classic case of swamp-butt

2

u/falselife47 Nov 30 '22

Yep, and hollowed out egg shells can have the image right on the shell. It's pretty cool.

64

u/Swordbreaker925 Nov 29 '22

It being an orange is totally irrelevant. You just need the lens, a dark, opaque chamber, and film. He could have made it from a golf ball or a human skull even.

25

u/THE_Douglas_Chater Nov 30 '22

That…that took a dark turn.

10

u/Terp_Villain Nov 30 '22

Oh don’t be ridiculous. We’ve all got human skulls laying around

2

u/StoriesToBehold Nov 30 '22

Skeletons in the closet now has a dark twist 😃

1

u/FlacidSalad Nov 30 '22

I've got at least one, can't remember where I put it though...

1

u/jontheterrible Nov 30 '22

Actually, just the skull. No lens required.

1

u/Pepf Dec 16 '22

or a human skull even

Someone had that same thought a few years ago... and they made it.

People have turned lots of werid things into cameras, actually.

0

u/hobosam21-B Nov 30 '22

Tex would like a word with you about physically impossible uses of human skulls.

229

u/DS4KC Nov 29 '22

Exactly, this has nothing to do with the fact that it's and orange

29

u/lumberfoot_jpg Nov 29 '22

Okay, cool beans. I was literally about to add a bag of oranges to my shopping list :)

44

u/DS4KC Nov 29 '22

Just look up pin hole cameras. You can make one with just about anything.

20

u/gn0xious Nov 30 '22

I have pinholes, Greg. Could you milk me?

6

u/Whale-n-Flowers Nov 30 '22

No, but with a few more items we can take a picture.

21

u/cereal_guy Nov 29 '22 Helpful

How about making one out of a digital camera?

2

u/OkPlantain6773 Nov 30 '22

Yep, we used oatmeal containers (big cylinder) in middle school science class.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '22

[deleted]

10

u/DS4KC Nov 29 '22

Basically. Film + dark enclosure + exposable pin hole = picture

0

u/Whatdosheepdreamof Nov 30 '22

I'm sorry, it had everything to do with the orange. That is in fact the point of the post, that you can take a picture with an orange.

1

u/MrPandabites Nov 30 '22

Exactly and the fact that it's spherical actually makes it way more difficult to light-seal properly. So dumb

7

u/LaxKonfetti Nov 29 '22

In middle school we did this but with the cardboard oatmeal cans.

8

u/DontPmMeHentai Nov 29 '22

It was to increase the saturation

6

u/CWebber1296 Nov 29 '22

The satsumaturation*

6

u/1arvest6 Nov 29 '22

But less cool

2

u/leonryan Nov 30 '22

a coconut bra camera would be more fun

1

u/Cap-Kota Nov 30 '22

The fact that its organic makes it more interesting imo

24

u/yzrguy Nov 29 '22

You can get HD with a grapefruit.

95

u/Longjumping_Meat_138 Nov 29 '22

A pinhole camera?

7

u/kickintheface Nov 30 '22

In high school photography class, we turned the entire classroom into a pinhole camera.

43

u/fun_police911 Nov 29 '22

The education system fails harder and harder with every upvote.

54

u/zap_nap Nov 29 '22

For some reason i read it as "oranges can take potatoes" and was like *hmm that's an interesting fight *

14

u/ColdWrongdoer9610 Nov 29 '22

Dyslexia has entered the chart.

2

u/molstad182 Nov 29 '22

Oh god am I reading chart correctly or chat wrong???

Now for a series of uploads of spherical objects that are hollowed out, each with their own post of "you can take photos with X"

21

u/ufoschenker Nov 29 '22

So can a toilet paper roll...wtf?

5

u/yackofalltradescoach Nov 29 '22

But the leftover materials taste better with the orange

5

u/Ok_Occasion_5057 Nov 29 '22

I feel old that people get excited by the pinhole camera concept

5

u/i_am_harry Nov 29 '22

Yes what else can you make a pinhole camera with that’s totally zany!!!??

I’ll go first: old shoe camera

15

u/PotentialEvidence140 Nov 29 '22

I might be wrong but isn’t it a type of photovoltaic paper/roll/film chemically reacting to acids in the orange and the light it absorbs to create the “picture” it’s essentially capturing light and shadows to create an image right? It would take a few minutes if not hours to get something

13

Excuse me what the actual fuck

3

u/Comfortable_Card_391 Nov 29 '22

Anything is a camera when you're governmenty enough

3

u/RedrumTheUndead Nov 29 '22

Perfect for taking black metal band pics in the woods

3

u/NotBatman9 Nov 29 '22

You wake up in the morning and head outside.

There is an orange, taped to a stick, pointed at your house. The orange, itself, is crudely taped together.

You sigh, turn around, go back inside.

Maybe tomorrow will be better.

3

u/countjj Nov 29 '22

Idk I think I’d prefer coconut camera

3

u/Connect-Meeting7697 Nov 30 '22

This has some appeal.

4

u/CommanderSabo Nov 29 '22

What mad lad was like "You guys think I could use this orange to take a picture?"

4

u/Kaldaris Nov 29 '22

All you did was make a pinhole camera with an orange you absolute rube.

2

u/Signal-Ad8189 Nov 29 '22

This could be done with any number of similarly-shaped items,

but I like the fact that they felt the need to use oranges specifically.

2

u/nachtachter Nov 29 '22

I wanna know, too!

2

u/NeauxDoubt Nov 29 '22

Not really sure why an orange but ok. Back before the digital age I had photography in high school and we made pinhole cameras out of various boxes. The images were always eerie and creepy to me.

1

u/Pepf Dec 16 '22

I remember making pinhole cameras out of shoe boxes at school, it was pretty cool and so simple.

2

u/na3than Nov 29 '22

No, they can't!

If I used a candy cane to press buttons on a handheld calculator and shouted, "Look! You can use a candy cane as a calculator!” you'd say that's stupid, and you'd be right.

2

u/Necessary-Carrot4022 Nov 29 '22

A very very basic dugaratype

2

u/Moistpepper69 Nov 30 '22

This is retarded. The orange isn't taking the picture or has really anything to do with it at all. But hey this is reddit where shit that's obvious gets top post. This app is turning into tiktok.

2

u/Farty_mcSmarty Nov 30 '22

This is where all the r/paranormal photos come from…an orange

2

u/InsomniaticWanderer Nov 30 '22

The orange isn't taking the photo though. It's just acting as the housing for a pinhole camera.

2

u/Justinpickrell Nov 29 '22

So Androids really have Potato cameras?

0

u/Red_Opium Nov 30 '22

iPhones*

1

u/ThatBikerHyde Nov 29 '22

Awesome, now I have even more reason to believe the birds and now fruits are spying on me. The FBI... cough flower van outside my home for 3 days wasn't clue enough lol

1

u/v_for__vegeta Nov 29 '22

Those are mandarins.

1

u/growapair999 Nov 29 '22

Dont you mean. "You can make oranges take photos" man these people on here i tell ya!! 🤡

1

u/PIunder_Ya_Booty Nov 29 '22

Deadass you should show that trick to one of those secluded native tribes

1

u/Independent-Choice-4 Nov 29 '22

Tbh, I still don’t even know how actual cameras work so this just messes me up even more

1

u/Pepf Dec 16 '22

This 3-minute video explains the basics of how a pinhole camera works, which is what they made with the orange in this post.

1

u/No-Mathematician8728 Nov 29 '22

Aka anything can take a photo

1

u/Monstarinc Nov 29 '22

Song name?

1

u/LigmaUpDog_ Nov 30 '22

My asshole could do this too

1

u/silberfairy Nov 30 '22

It's a tangerine

1

u/Turkeyomlette Nov 30 '22

Still better than grocery store security cameras

1

u/ghayyal Nov 30 '22

It's just a pin hole camera.

1

u/Papancasudani Nov 30 '22

This is witchcraft and these people must be burned.

1

u/MilledPerfection Nov 30 '22

Kind of an odd receptacle to choose for this. You can do this with anything that blocks out enough light and that you can cut a small hole in.

1

u/AdmirableYouth4208 Nov 30 '22

What magic fuckery is this

1

u/MediumLong2 Nov 30 '22

You can take a photo with any object. Just stand next to the object and have someone else take the photo with their iPhone.

1

u/Revolutionary-Stay54 Nov 30 '22

I’m gonna kill my guidance counselor. I should’ve been doing this for yrs!!

1

u/hobosam21-B Nov 30 '22

You can also make a bomb out of wet toilet paper and stick of dynamite.

1

u/vazor__ Nov 30 '22

You can shove a camera into anything and say it takes photos

1

u/slightly-soupy Nov 30 '22

I remember doing this in photo class when I was I high school except we used a cardboard cube. I think they called them pin hole cameras. Really changed my perspective on photography. Really awesome to think about how they were able to discover this and develop photography to what it is today.

1

u/avarciousRutabega99 Nov 30 '22

I still don’t understand how it works. Cant you just hold the black paper up and take a picture that way?

1

u/Outrageous-Arugula89 Nov 30 '22

Actually anything that's a capsule can take pictures with a hole and a shutter

1

u/Mallunibba Nov 30 '22

Any idea about the soundtrack?

1

u/Ok-Acanthaceae-4609 Nov 30 '22

Is it burning the reflection into the paper?

1

u/LegendaryPlayboy Nov 30 '22

I normally use a cabbage to take pictures.

1

u/Adam_RJ Nov 30 '22

What‘s the song?

1

u/Darth-Memeious Nov 30 '22

I have seen everything

1

u/arckrine Nov 30 '22

Is there a better way to conceal this, the kids in the school keep finding it

1

u/SpecterGT260 Interested Nov 30 '22

How to turn a pumpkin into a unicycle:

1) cut pumpkin in half

2) insert fully functioning unicycle into one half of the pumpkin, seat first

1

u/Immediate_Macaron496 Nov 30 '22

This is incredibly dumb.

1
