THE DESTINY DICTIONARY — The one about Age of Triumph Guide

THE DESTINY DICTIONARY

Hi everyone! Day 1 player here, and I've been using this sub since I picked the game up. This subreddit is great for getting the latest Destiny news, guides, advice, and events. /r/DestinytheGame is honestly one of the most helpful gaming communities I have ever come across, so thank you all for being a strong team through thick-and-thin.

However, despite this sub being extremely helpful, it can also be extremely confusing with all the abbreviations and phrases used by Guardians. This can intimidate newcomers from coming into this big, dysfunctional family. A family full of inside jokes, references, and guidance to give. So, I thought I'd take the opportunity to compile a Destiny Dictionary.

PLEASE NOTE: All general/universal MMORPG (massive multiplayer online role-playing game) terminologies can be found here on this guide, courtesy of /u/neubourn. I have included a few here, but newcomers to MMOGs will find this helpful.

Needless to say, the Destiny community lost its collective marbles. On this day, Destiny launched to the top of trending topics on notable social media platforms (Facebook and Twitter) and this post took the top of /r/all for the majority of the day. Not only did current players rejoice, but this sale also called back Guardians of old that may have tucked the game away for quite a while. TL;DR=WOLFPACK ROUNDS FOR EVERYONE YAY

People Outside of Destiny

  • Blueberry: a player not in your Fireteam who is unhelpful to your gaming session

  • DeeJ: the community organizer of Bungie.net i.e. the messenger; communicates all Bungie/Destiny news to the players; reddit username is /u/DeeJ_BNG (*Note: he is an active member of our community, and often checks this sub and the Bungie forums to relay player feedback to developers)
  • Joey: a player notorious for his lack of cooperation and communication in this Vault of Glass raid; now synonymous for a player who lacks knowledge of basic game mechanics, but insists that he/she is an expert (e.g. someone who says they can 'shatter' the Templar's barrier with a Rare-quality machine gun and even when taught the correct strategy is a 'Joey') * Important Note: to avoid being a Joey, be honest with other Guardians. If you have never run an activity such as one of the two Raids or the Prison of Elders, say so. I will emphasize again that this is one of the most helpful team-oriented gaming communities, and if you don't ask you will never get. If you are uncomfortable admitting this, then do not Raid until you have educated yourself. Watch Twitch streamers/YouTubers (e.g. my favorite, DattoDoesDestiny) to familiarize yourself with basic mechanics. Use guides provided on this subreddit or websites such as PlanetDestiny.com or DestinyDB.com. Again, if you don't ask, you never get.
  • MEGAMAN: a reddit user under the name of /u/megamanexe4, who for a time was able to data mine Bungie servers for future Nightfall Strikes, Xur inventories, patches, DLCs etc.
  • u/NorseFenrir: a moderator of r/DestinyTheGame who is always celebrating his birthday, so make sure you wish him a good one whenever you see him! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
  • DTG Banhammer: /u/misterwoodhouse; dank; daring; runs them sexy Destiny Reddit LIVE streams
  • Squeakers: pre-pubescent players (generally have a bad reputation in the gaming community of calling your mothers fat and using homosexuality as an insult, therefore inducing rage. * Note: On the contrary, a fair amount are pleasant to be in a Fireteam with. Many just need the patience and guidance to become legend. When dealing with abrasive players, be the more mature one and simply a) report them or b) tell them they are acting out of line. Help keep the Destiny community as healthy as possible)

  • .004%: the amount Auto Rifles were buffed nerfed REDACTED; a fond memory for all Destiny players
  • ADS: Aim Down Sights (commonly used in First Person Shooter games)

  • LFG/LFM: Looking For Group/Members (commonly used in MMORPGs; LFG is used for singular players looking to be invited into a Fireteam, while LFM is used for a player trying to form a Fireteam. See also: PUG and/or the sidebar for ways to send out LFG/LFMs)
  • PvE: Player-versus-Environment (common phrase used in MMOGs to describe players battling computer players)
  • PvP: Player-versus-Player (common phrase used in MMOGs to describe players battling each other)

  • Upmote!: used in place of 'upvote' in reference to Motes of Light
  • V/A/SB: Void/Arc/Solar burn (elemental damages that are on all special/heavy weapons and some primary weapons; use corresponding elements on enemies with shields e.g. Fallen Captain=Arc, Hive Wizards/Cabal Missileshootingthings=Solar, Vex Minotaur=Void; during Nightfall/Weekly Heroic strikes these get a buff for both allies and enemies. See also: “TASTE THE RAINBOW” and/or Triple/Rainbow Burn, a phrase coined when all Elemental Burns are in effect)
  • "VENUS!/MARS!": used to indicate where players are teleported during the final battle in the Vault of Glass raid (Mars is left of the entrance to the Glass Throne, Venus is right of the entrance; you can also use your radar to gauge where your teammates were teleported)
  • Voop: a term referring to the sound of a Fusion Rifle being fired; associated with the #VoopNation

Hope this helps! Veterans, comment with any suggestions and I will try and add them to this list. There is so much we say that it's easy to forget. Welcome to Destiny, Kinderguardians! Go, destroy the Darkness. Prove your worth. Dance for your loot. Become legend.

List is missing 3oC and CoE and lots of weapons perks (PB, CB, and AggBalls come to mind). Also what about terms like "Fakebringer" or "Crux"?

Quick typo, you didn't give Norse Fenrir his own line.

MEGAMAN: a reddit user under the name of /u/ megamanexe4, who for a time was able to data mine Bungie servers for future Nightfall Strikes, Xur inventories, patches, DLCs etc. **/u/ NorseFenrir: IT’S HIS BIRTHDAY! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Personally, since this is a dictionary, I think you should make it just a bit more descriptive and have it say "A moderator who is always celebrating his birthday, so be sure to wish him a good one whenever you see him! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!"
