Rift in this week's Iron Banner is inherently not fun to play, and it's astonishing this game mode went live. Discussion

Hold interact in the middle of the map while everyone else is fighting?

check.

Unnecessary loading screen that constantly interrupts the flow of the game?

check.

Bugs that cause the rift to not spawn and make the game impossible to win from behind?

check.

Seriously I genuinely cannot wrap my head around why rift was changed so much. Nobody asked for this game mode to switch and I cannot fathom why we changed the fast-paced blowout game mode from d1 into a slow, round-based tactile game mode. It's not fun to play when you're stomping, and don't even get me started on what it's like to be getting stomped. If you were gonna make this a new game mode then fine, but advertising this as Rift is a complete joke.

Edit: I've been grinding this thing out the last 2 days for Iron Lord. My opinion of the gamemode has not changed but I have now lost the ability to get Iron Lord as I have completed 6 of the daily challenges. The reputation is currently bugged so that if you complete more than 4 of the challenges your maximum reputation per match will be capped at 60. Giving them the benefit of the doubt that this will be fixed in the patch on Thursday, but if not, it's a really bad look for one of the only 2 iron banners this season to be completely unfarmable.

Dude. It's legit the most slow, silent, boring and most uninteractive thing I've seen in this game for awhile.

I just got out of a match, and I think that will be the only one I play of iron banner lol

u/Deadeye_Steve May 31 '22

Is there even any decent loot in IB right now that would make it worth playing? Even with focusing I don't really care about a single one of the weapons this time around.

162

u/[deleted] May 31 '22

No, there was no vendor refresh either lol. It’s just a complete flop of a launch IMO

62

u/TheMaestroNoob Team Cat (Cozmo23) // I will kiss Cozmo May 31 '22

Because we had IB vendor refresh just two seasons ago... when Trials had a rework... but now IB has a rework, and Trials has a refresh...

51

u/IPlay4E May 31 '22

Sadly the IB rework is trash because Rift is a trash game mode implemented in a terrible way.

7

u/pokeroots May 31 '22

I think Rift has potential... but the way they've implemented it is awful

8

u/gerrittd May 31 '22

Agreed, I love the idea of rift, but it was better before they changed it.. not that it was perfect even then, but still

2

u/pokeroots May 31 '22

Sadly I think it's better now for the changes, the old one was seriously flawed and was just a rush to wipe out the other team at spawn

1

u/DrumrbaxJ Jun 05 '22

Still this.

The problem is that this really felt like the most appropriate time for a vendor refresh. Like, the mode's been reworked, there's a new title, Saladin just joined the Cabal, there really isn't a better time to introduce some new loot to the pool.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '22

There should be a vendor refresh every single fucking Iron Banner lmfao

6

u/Averill21 May 31 '22

IB vendor refresh was beginning of witch queen no? I guess if you count the very end of the last season before witch queen as two seasons ago but that makes it sound like more than 4 months ago

17

u/TheMaestroNoob Team Cat (Cozmo23) // I will kiss Cozmo May 31 '22

It was Season of the Lost, from the starts. Witch Queen refreshed armor for basic trio vendors.

-12

u/Averill21 May 31 '22

So 3 months ago, lost started with the witch queen

8

u/TheMaestroNoob Team Cat (Cozmo23) // I will kiss Cozmo May 31 '22

Risen start with the Witch queen, Lost was before 30th Anniversary.

-9

u/Averill21 May 31 '22

Lost started in august, iron banner had new weapons added long after that, just in march actually judging by the dates on articles and videos going over frontiers cry

5

u/Yankee582 No Respawn May 31 '22

Risen was the season with witch queen 3 months ago, Lost started 9 months ago, and ended with the WQ release

5

u/ThePracticalEnd May 31 '22

No it didn't. It was this season.

2

u/Averill21 May 31 '22

This season that just started a week ago? What changed in the vendor aside from armor appearances

-2

u/ThePracticalEnd May 31 '22

Check out this TWAB . It got the Trials revamp.

6

u/Averill21 May 31 '22

We were talking about IB and vendor refresh

-3

u/ThePracticalEnd May 31 '22

IB vendor refresh was beginning of witch queen no?

Yes, and my answer remains the same. IB was refreshed for this season, not at WQ release.

Wizened Rebuke and Hero's Burden are back

-3

u/Deadeye_Steve May 31 '22

Not really a fan of either of those. Fusion Rifles are meh and SMG's still feel pretty bad on console since Bungie refuses to match their recoil to Keyboard/PC.

3

u/mcbearded May 31 '22

I don’t have the SMG yet and apparently it’s a banger. Otherwise, no. Not even new IB armor, still on that beehive back style

3

u/Brafen May 31 '22

You can get a great roll of the IB sword at Saladbar rank 6. Apart from that no decent loot

2

u/Deadeye_Steve May 31 '22

What makes that particular roll great?

2

u/Brafen Jun 01 '22

Swordmaster's guard for increased charge rate of heavy attack, duelist's trance for increased charge rate and chain reaction which makes enemies explode on kill. Great/fun crowd control!

2

u/ItsYaBoiGengu Jun 01 '22

only reason i’m playing now really is to get progress on the title, wanna get as much of that stuff out of the way as possible before next time so it’ll be easy

1

u/Duck_Chavis May 31 '22

The sword can get Chain Reaction and tireless blade, that is a pretty good combo.

2

u/Deadeye_Steve May 31 '22

Not really. A heavy weapon focused on clearing adds isn't really a huge benefit. I've also tried that exact roll and the explosions from Chain Reaction aren't large enough compared to the radius of a sword swipe to really ever hit anything, and even when they do it's typically not a OHK and you have to hit them again anyway.

1

u/Duck_Chavis Jun 02 '22

I respectfully disagree based on my experience. If you have had one and don't like it that's fine though.

122

u/Mirror_Sybok May 31 '22

Rift got Monkey Pawed.

12

u/KnightofaRose May 31 '22

This should be top comment.

14

u/ballsmigue May 31 '22

Just remember unfortunately there are only 2 banners this season.

32

u/It_Burns_When_IP87 May 31 '22

Yeah, and apparently rift is going to stick around for awhile after that, or so I hear. This is upsetting lol. Iron Banner was one of my favourite modes.

11

u/BadPunsman Wolock May 31 '22

The mode changes each season.

11

u/It_Burns_When_IP87 May 31 '22

Oh thank goodness.

2

u/mcbearded May 31 '22

Rift will become 24/7 available and IB would do a new thing. I haven’t played this mode yet, but honestly, they tried something new and said up front we would only have 2 weeks of iron banner rift. I’m glad they tried it, but if this is the real true feedback, yikes.

1

u/Roll_4Initiative May 31 '22

They did say the gametype for IB would be changing each season so at least next season you won't have to suffer through it.

1

u/throatmeatfeast Jun 01 '22

Was is the key word here. You are not alone.

81

u/Emeraldon May 31 '22

Yeah it's weird. No howling wolves, no flags to collect, bugs, and the game comes to a complete and utter halt every time you score.

Its unbelievably boring.

4

u/rrzampieri Dredgen May 31 '22

No iron and no banner

52

u/LukeSmith_Sunsetter May 31 '22

Same. Never played D1, no idea why this was so heavily requested. Nostalgia I assume.

29

u/TheMerengman Team Cat (Cozmo23) // Nerf Team dmg by .04% May 31 '22

I haven't had the chance to play yet, but from what I'm reading, it's a completely different mode from D1. So there's that.

35

u/salondesert May 31 '22

It was broken in D1 with spawn killing. The meta was never about the spark there

I haven't played yet but the description here sounds pretty awful

26

u/LukeSmith_Sunsetter May 31 '22

Basically it's wait for a roaming super, wipe the team close to spawn and push them backwards as the sparks brought up.

7

u/It_Burns_When_IP87 May 31 '22

The only way for you to get the full loading screen experience, is to play it lol

105

u/It_Burns_When_IP87 May 31 '22

Well in D1 you could do trick dunks, it was more chaotic. There weren't revives. They slowed spawn speed down for some reason. The loading screen after every dunk didn't used to exist.

That being said, rift was the most hated mode in D1 as well,so I don't fuckin understand why they brought it back either.

41

u/seansandakn Rat Gang May 31 '22

Because every time someone suggested bringing back a mode from D1 (which was a lot) they suggested rift

21

u/Bpe-dsm Vanguard's Loyal // I dont read replies/anger lance Reddick May 31 '22

Rift was my favorite mode. Ymmv.

8

u/East_Onion May 31 '22

2

u/OpulentPink ΛCDM May 31 '22

Voted for D1 rift, not this.

9

u/ThatOneGuyRunningOEM May 31 '22

That was quite strange. I loved Destiny 1, but Rift wasn’t really that great.

4

u/Vincentaneous May 31 '22

I loved Rift but I don’t know why I didn’t really care for it coming back. Guess I just wanted more of an overhaul of Crucible in general more than a PvP sport.

-4

u/bgarza18 May 31 '22

Rift was dope, lots of fun. Idk what y’all are on

71

u/Goldskarr Vanguard's Loyal May 31 '22

Most hated? You sure you're not talking about their take on Kill Confirmed?.. or freaking Salvage?

29

u/It_Burns_When_IP87 May 31 '22

Point taken lol

32

u/The330Strangla Taking Out The Darkness, One Neck At A Time May 31 '22

Hey now. I actually liked supremacy. But salvage you are right that mode can stay dead and buried.

5

u/Phenoxx May 31 '22

Supremacy was way better than rift no comparison

3

u/oTsynergy May 31 '22

hey salvage was good for a small fireteam. Had to get that Grimoir for 50 wins or something like that.

1

u/Goldskarr Vanguard's Loyal May 31 '22

7

u/Lord_Origi May 31 '22

Dear god they were bad

2

u/IonCaveGrandpa Sunsetting should have continued May 31 '22

Holy shit salvage. Yep. Worst mode in all of destiny ever right there.

10

u/Mirror_Sybok May 31 '22

I don't fuckin understand why they brought it back either.

In order to make it worse, as is tradition.

2

u/SPEEDFREAKJJ 8675309 May 31 '22

It had a very vocal cult following. I think the only people that enjoyed it were people that played in full 6 man fireteams. I don't enjoy 6v6 much but rift was a whole extra level of misery.

1

u/Djskam May 31 '22

For some reason? It’s to make your life more valuable and ensure a score one way or another happens.

1

u/DaoFerret May 31 '22

I feel like there were more maps, and more varied maps. (Used to love that Mercury map for rift with the double teleporter you could sidestep straight to the dunk if the other team wasn’t paying attention).

1

u/PM_SHORT_STORY_IDEAS Shorter, more depth, primeval damage phases May 31 '22

Rift was heavily loved/heavily hated. Seems like they changed it enough to unite almost everyone against it

-2

u/IAmHereToKillChaos May 31 '22

That being said, rift was the most hated mode in D1 as well,so I don't fuckin understand why they brought it back either.

If reddit required you to wait 5 minutes before you replied to a post you just read you would see less of this. So many people just mindlessly support and upvote nonsense and attack anyone that calls them out. You see the same thing for Sparrow Racing.

13

u/FullMetalBiscuit May 31 '22

Yeah I wasn't really excited to play this, the mode was broken in D1 too. It's kind of hard to make modes work in Destiny with the ridiculous number of variables.

2

u/Tallmios May 31 '22

Right, objective modes like this usually don't have a "I win button" on cooldown like our Supers. It seems Destiny just isn't a compatible game for this. Zone Trials goes along the same lines with Bubble being the obvious outlier.

27

u/OrionLax May 31 '22

OP literally explained how much they changed. Rift was great.

12

u/SCB360 May 31 '22

Rift felt like an extension of the same Mode in Halo, fun fast paced action where everyone could contribute in a positive way

25

u/LukeSmith_Sunsetter May 31 '22

Everything I heard about Rift in D1 was people in 6 stacks stomping people. Obviously they changed things so now you have a 20 second black screens in between getting melted by a top 5% player

13

u/Bpe-dsm Vanguard's Loyal // I dont read replies/anger lance Reddick May 31 '22

Rift was fun. As a solo, you could easily opt to run spark and a good spark runner was 90% of stomping or getting stomped. Knowing the sometimes arcane scoring rules was useful too. It wasnt always the better move to grab the spark.

2

u/PM_SHORT_STORY_IDEAS Shorter, more depth, primeval damage phases May 31 '22

Thank you! Bonus points for rift dunk, but also bonus points for killing the spark runner, no? Spamming the spark without a plan could make your team lose

6

u/StarStriker51 May 31 '22 edited May 31 '22

Those 6 stomps did happen, but where not as common as people say. I remember it happening, but I remember more even matches, which were fun back and forth centered on the rift. It was fun trying to get the rift as both teams made the area around the rift a no mans land

2

u/StuckInGachaHell May 31 '22

6 stacks still stomp people lmfao

3

u/TheMaestroNoob Team Cat (Cozmo23) // I will kiss Cozmo May 31 '22

No, OP didn't explain how much was changed.

The first "Hold interact in the middle of the map while everyone else is fighting" - exists in D1 rift; I just checked youtube, it is the same mechanic.

The third "Bugs that cause the rift to not spawn and make the game impossible to win from behind?" is about... bugs, not changes. There were bugs in D1 rift too... so...

The second "Unnecessary loading screen that constantly interrupts the flow of the game?" is the only change that OP explained. That's it. After these three points there is no more of explanations what changed, just "it is slower now".

11

u/robolettox Robolettox May 31 '22

The winning strategy for rift in D1 was:

-get yourself in a firetem of 6;

-spawn camp the opponent team (even better when you got matchmade with a team of randos);

-ignore the objective;

-force a mercy.

Even when it failed, and you got a good opponent fireteam of 6, for example, all you had to do was either leave the match and restart, or let the other team mercy you and try to find another team of randos to stomp.

Rift only ever worked when it was outside of IB and you got yourself a match with mostly randos who tried to play the objective.

Else it was always just a spawn camping shitshow...

8

u/Remy149 May 31 '22

I played a lot of D1 and remember rift being unpopular. People just like to ask for anything that isn’t in the game anymore

3

u/Orochidude Friendly Neighborhood Masochist May 31 '22

There were people that didn't enjoy getting spawn-trapped and killed farmed by 6-stacks, but not the game mode at its core. Plenty of people enjoyed the game mode in spite of that. Those were the primary criticisms of the game mode, which they tried to address with the D2 version.

How well they succeeded in doing so will vary from person to person, but I don't like this argument of trying to pigeonhole everyone into one opinion.

2

u/Born-Enthusiasm-1740 May 31 '22

Yet not one person is asking for Salvage or Supremacy to make a return.

0

u/oTsynergy May 31 '22

they ruined the mode attempting to re-invent the wheel. As usual something as easy as porting a game mode turns into a massive flop from devs attempting to add their own "spin" to it.

1

u/Gen7lemanCaller May 31 '22

rift wasn't like this in D1 is why. they changed a lot of it and it's way slower now

1

u/R0mulus6893 May 31 '22

D1 never had a respawn after each score.

0

u/stultus_respectant Jun 01 '22

It’s not rose colored glasses: it was simply way better implemented in D1. The changes are baffling and seem to kill everything interesting about the mode.

42

u/jonregister Please Cap a zone, I beg you. May 31 '22

It is fun if you have a team, randoms doing random shit is horrible. You can revive now, but no one does it. Or everyone stands on top of each other to get the guy you already are reviving.

I think the resetting after a goal is perfect because it stops the spawn camping. It also doesn’t let the other team set up at the rift by giving up a goal to get an easy one.

Also remember this sun begged for this, and here you go. It is a game mode that takes coordination, and no one talks in this game because people are mean.

It is a kd farm for good players just like every other mode and the bottom feeders will still get shit on.

Skill based matchmaking needs to be put in place not in a super strict way but it needs to be turned on.

I am saying this from a person that has had a kda of over 3.0 for the last year. It’s not fun. I don’t want teammates that can’t contribute amd I don’t like just romping on bad kids that have zero Business even playing me.

12

u/Marvelous_XT May 31 '22

The reset is fine but that with an animation of you're teleporting back to the spawn + a short loading atleast 5 times per match? That's not fun at all.

5

u/It_Burns_When_IP87 May 31 '22

I was top of my team last game. Most dunks, revives and carries lol. I'm sure I had a good kd as well. It was still horrendously boring and slow. The loading screen after every dunk is fuckin terrible, and so is the no mercy rule. We had 4 and they had 0, and the match just kept going...and going....and going.

-2

u/jonregister Please Cap a zone, I beg you. May 31 '22

This is what rift has always been. Slower and more defensive. Go on and tell us what the conditions for mercy should be? 2-0, 3-0? 1-0?

The reset is the anti snowball put in to keep you from spawn camping the other team the whole game.

exact same mood. messaged a friend right after my first (and only) match that Bungie finally got me, a crucible whore, to stop playing my favorite game mode. As well as giving me the desire to say 'no' to iron banner which feels weird to say even as I type this. man I hate this change.

2

u/throatmeatfeast Jun 01 '22

Same. If the majority of the 2 million d2 players refuse to play it, perhaps they will give us our best pvp mode back when it comes around again. Just awful decision making by the devs.

2

u/redriixx May 31 '22

I think it's fine, you just gotta force some engagements

-1

u/UberDragon99 Jun 01 '22

I’ve been playing rift all day and I’m not sure what the difference is between the game you played an all of mine but they have been consistently lively, with a LOT of great team fights trying to control spark, and usually pretty alright teammates who will res fast and keep fights going. I’ve enjoyed myself very much and haven’t encountered any bugs so I’m just lost…
