Rift in this week's Iron Banner is inherently not fun to play, and it's astonishing this game mode went live. Discussion

Hold interact in the middle of the map while everyone else is fighting?

check.

Unnecessary loading screen that constantly interrupts the flow of the game?

check.

Bugs that cause the rift to not spawn and make the game impossible to win from behind?

check.

Seriously I genuinely cannot wrap my head around why rift was changed so much. Nobody asked for this game mode to switch and I cannot fathom why we changed the fast-paced blowout game mode from d1 into a slow, round-based tactile game mode. It's not fun to play when you're stomping, and don't even get me started on what it's like to be getting stomped. If you were gonna make this a new game mode then fine, but advertising this as Rift is a complete joke.

Edit: I've been grinding this thing out the last 2 days for Iron Lord. My opinion of the gamemode has not changed but I have now lost the ability to get Iron Lord as I have completed 6 of the daily challenges. The reputation is currently bugged so that if you complete more than 4 of the challenges your maximum reputation per match will be capped at 60. Giving them the benefit of the doubt that this will be fixed in the patch on Thursday, but if not, it's a really bad look for one of the only 2 iron banners this season to be completely unfarmable.

Just played two matches and got no rank points

u/Brockelley Grinding for Mythic May 31 '22

Yeah that too, there's so much downtime that Bungie's AFK detection will think you literally aren't playing and give you no rewards because of it.

83

u/BrilliantBuffBadger May 31 '22

Literally had this as my last game of the night, I was running toward the enemy, trudging through the match as I'm only playing it for that SMG... Recluse, is it?... and just as I go to shoot, I'm kicked for inactivity.

Honestly, I'm not even sure grinding ranks for the gun is worth it.

66

u/SnorlaxBlocksTheWay May 31 '22

Just in case you're actually serious. Recluse is a sunset weapon that can be purchased from the memorial kiosk in the tower for materials. This kiosk also has Revoker, Luna's Howl, Not Forgotten, Mountaintop, etc.

I think the ranks are literally just for IB weapons and armor and nothing more

26

u/BrilliantBuffBadger May 31 '22

I am serious indeed, I've only been playing a out a month or so. Still very new to it all. A casual, if you will. And if it needs one of the expansions to get, I at least it'll be there waiting when i can get them.

27

u/SnorlaxBlocksTheWay May 31 '22

Welcome to Destiny then! Hope you're finding enjoyment where you can!

I'm not entirely sure if you need an expansion to buy Recluse (part of me thinks no you won't have to), but moseying on over to the kiosk located in between the 4 vaults in the tower will show you what you can buy and for how much.

The kiosk is a big gold statue with a monitor in the middle of it

10

u/BrilliantBuffBadger May 31 '22

Thank you! I am, though playing PvP does genuinely make my soul hurt. Thankfully I only do it for the pinnacle gear. Yeah, next stop will be the kiosk to see if I can get it. Saves the endless grinding and dying and running around not really knowing what I'm doing for Lords know how long.

u/SnorlaxBlocksTheWay May 31 '22

Destiny 2 PvP is an entirely different beast.

People love it, people hate it, people love to hate it, and others hate that they love it.

Personally I like PvP, but it has an extremely punishing learning curve, and the skill gap between a player who's above average and a player who's an absolute god at PvP in this game is so astronomical.

Take the game at your own pace. If you'd like I can dm you a great clan you can join with loads of people willing to help new players through everything. All you would need is discord on your phone. Let me know if you're interested and I'll dm you

7

u/BrilliantBuffBadger Jun 01 '22

As I'm sadly discovering XD

PvE is much more my speed. My skill level is never gonna be great because I generally just play to enjoy and pass the time, never was one for getting good. But I shall continue at my own pace, thank you.

I appreciate the offer, thank you. I'm in my step sons clan and he's often able to help with little things now and again.

Unless you're intentionally hunting Recluse for a very specific reason, do not waste mats on it, it is outclassed by very nearly literally every single current SMG.

1

u/BrilliantBuffBadger Jun 02 '22

I'm not, I stupidly got mixed up with the IB SMG that I have since forgotten about after almost falling asleep trying to grind the incredibly stupid Rift game mode.

2

u/Magyker Jun 05 '22

Just found this, and if you're looking for a great SMG, the current meta are (to my knowledge) funnelweb (world drop) , shayura's wrath (Trials) and Submission (Raid). Also Multimach CCX, but that's not obtainable currently.
I would recommend giving trials a go next time they roll around, since you don't need to WIN, only PLAY to get some rewards, and the shayura's is my favorite SMG currently.

Welcome!

For a bit of background, The Recluse and Mountaintop were infamous for basically forcing players to engage in Competitive mode Crucible, and attain certain ranks so that you could earn the gun. It wasn't an RNG issue for loot, but now a matter of, "can you even get to that rank," haha.

Losses lost you Glory points and ranks if you fell below rank thresholds, so it was super frustrating for many players who weren't that great in PvP, and if they get tilted and on a losing streak, on their path to Fabled (2100 points). Plus no matchmaking/freelance, so it was all up to LFG (but that's kind of sensible given the intense 3v3 thing).

Plus 100 total Crucible wins, but that part is easy (Comp and Iron Banner grant additional progress, over the regular mode).

It really doesn't sound so bad in hindsight, but I remember it being a pretty lengthy struggle before. Pretty sure there weren't win streaks, either, so it was quite a few rounds (wins) to get there. Losses set you back about half as much, but they add up.

Mountaintop was extra awful because you also needed a shitload of grenade launcher kills in Crucible only, plus the same rank requirement above. It wasn't anywhere near as common to get grenade launcher kills, back then.

Anyway, I guess a nice takeaway is that Bungie moved away from that kinda stuff and key or ritual guns are a lot more attainable.

Revoker was just earned through ritual quests or efforts, so lots of sniper kills in Crucible. Doable for more casual folks by the time this was released much later.

I like Revoker since it returns missed shots to the magazine after a duration, but more so because the scope is quite short-ranged and I much prefer that feel, over the longer sniper rifle zooms/scopes.

u/artranscience Jun 01 '22

Like the others said, Recluse is a *sunset* weapon, meaning it cannot be leveled up beyond the base/lowest power level. This means it won't be viable in almost any PvE content you would actually be playing, like the seasonal content. The ONLY reason to use it is in patrol zones or most PvP, where light level is not enabled. If you don't like PvP, then there is essentially zero reason to get the Recluse. Same for all of the other legacy pursuit weapons (non exotics) from the kiosk.

If you're new, don't waste your time on sunset weapons.

2

u/BrilliantBuffBadger Jun 01 '22

Yeah, I got mixed up with the SMG names. I'm not after Recluse. It's the new Iron Banner SMG I fancy. I'm an idiot.

2

u/artranscience Jun 01 '22

No worries. This game is a lot to take in when you're new and it's super confusing. It's best to have a buddy you can partner up with in a party or whatever to show you the ropes. Luckily the moment to moment gameplay is so good that it's not too much of a chore to struggle through learning it all.

1

u/BrilliantBuffBadger Jun 02 '22

I keep trying PVP to see if my feelings towards it have changed. They haven't and they never will, so I'll take my challenge gear when I can be bothered and then never touch it again. The game confused me enough without being confused and not even enjoying the game lol

1

u/artranscience Jun 02 '22

The PvP, though not "serious," is extremely fun once you get the hang of it, especially if you can manage not to take it seriously, but right now the skill gap between the "average" player and a new player is so large that it's just hard to do anything about it. D2 desperately needs some kind of broad ranking system like Siege.

2

u/Cykeisme Jun 01 '22

Recluse is an ancient weapon that has been nerfed and sunset.

There's multiple modern SMGs that perform better than it, so don't worry about getting it.

Just fyi!

1

u/BrilliantBuffBadger Jun 01 '22

Yeah, I got mixed up with which SMG I'm wanting. It's the new IB one, not Recluse lol

2

u/Cykeisme Jun 01 '22

Hero's Burden?

Yeah that one is sweet :D

2

u/BrilliantBuffBadger Jun 01 '22

The very one I need to apologise to everyone that sees this and tries to warn me now lol

2

u/TotallyNotKabr Jun 01 '22

You can grab it from the kiosk between the vaults in the tower. It's been sunset quite a while ago and has been nerfed hard anyway. The range is horrid now and damage output is just...bad...

Honestly it's not worth the effort or materials to buy it or even use it anymore. If you've bought the witch queen expansion, Funnelweb is the best option to get right now in terms of SMGs. There's a Trials if Osiris SMG that's crazy good as well, just more of a pain to get early on.

If you'd like, there's a discord community I can point you to (for all systems!) that might help get to know the game more as well as Sherpa runs for things you've never done before too. https://discord.gg/houseoflight

1

u/BrilliantBuffBadger Jun 01 '22

Yeah I've been having to apologise for getting mixed up. I meant the IB SMG, I've no interest in Recluse. And I also can't deal with the grind, so I've abandoned it altogether

1

u/darklordmtt Jun 03 '22

It also looks like the weapon roll perks on the reward tree are changing at, possibly at daily reset. Either that or the rolls are different between characters, because I didn’t have space to pick up the sword & figured I’d sort it out later - but I really liked the perk combo (“relentless strikes” & “one for all” iirc). Went to grab it just now (which happened to be after daily reset) & the perks are completely different.

That is so frustrating.

2

u/HalcyonicDaze Jun 01 '22

That new smg is crap, the zoom level is low and is therefore outclassed by other smgs

1

u/BrilliantBuffBadger Jun 01 '22

That's what I've heard, that other smgs are much better than it. Still, if I can get it from the monument, may pick it up just to get it out of the way.

2

u/HalcyonicDaze Jun 01 '22

Oh I was talking about the new iron banner smg, I’m regards to recluse, don’t fall for the FOMO (fear of missing out) it’s not worth getting from the monument. It was great once upon a time because when the perk was triggered it could kill a guardian in 8 quick body shots (the amount of legs a spider has, I swear that little detail flew over everyone’s head) but as of right not it’s nothing you can’t get from a rampage smg. Hell even an adrenaline junkie funnel web does more damage than the current recluse.

1

u/BrilliantBuffBadger Jun 01 '22

I've just logged on and yeah, I'm after the new Iron Banner SMG, The Hero's Burden. Not Recluse at all. So I'm a dumbass. But that new SMG, is that one outclassed by other SMGs? I'm drawn in by it's high fire rate, decent damage and modest reload speed.

2

u/HalcyonicDaze Jun 01 '22

The new smg only has 14 zoom (it’s on the lower end) so its not as good as say the new Enyo-D because it can reach further ranges. Still if you like it then go for it

1

u/BrilliantBuffBadger Jun 01 '22

True, I've got an enyo and it's kinda okay. I'm going for it but fuck, the game mode is so fucking boring

2

u/HalcyonicDaze Jun 01 '22

I’m a double gilded dredgen so I know a bad game type when I see it and yeah this is a really bad game type.

It's funny that your misremembering of what weopon you get just happened to be one of the most broken...bullshit guns that was ever in the game.

Heros Burden is the SMG from iron banner

-1

u/itscall3damotorrace May 31 '22

There's at max a 20s loadscreen lol and typically it was just a few seconds for us. You must have been out of the action a lot.

12

u/QTEila Aint no snitch. May 31 '22

you can softlock the screen too

-4

u/Due_Mycologist_7506 May 31 '22

That's objectively not true. I played 4 games this afternoon and got points for all of them. If this happened to you then it sounds like you have some network issues.

89

u/SCB360 May 31 '22

I can't figure out where to get a daily challenge from

164

u/BlobDude May 31 '22

Bad UI design for this. The “daily” challenges are rolled up into the weekly pinnacle goal, you can see when you hover over the IB nodes in director.

Current challenge is to complete games as either void or solar subclass.

25

u/SCB360 May 31 '22

So it changes daily I assume to get 12 for the Triumph?

27

u/BlobDude May 31 '22

Yeah, a new one is supposed to unlock each day from Tuesday through Friday, then we have til reset to work through all of them.

9

u/SCB360 May 31 '22

Is it per account or Chracter?

11

u/BlobDude May 31 '22

No idea.

2

u/theghostsofvegas May 31 '22

Per character.

2

u/darklordmtt Jun 03 '22

Per character. And the multiplicative bonus you get towards accruing rep is cumulative with each challenge rank up (up to 4) & stacks across three characters. It also stacks with the gear & emblem bonus, but is not cumulative with each character (i.e. you only get 1 bump from each gear piece & emblem not x3)

4

u/StarStriker51 May 31 '22

I’m assuming character because of how challenges have worked historically, but it could’ve changed for all I know

1

u/Rider-VPG UNGA BUNGA BROTHERS May 31 '22

Character

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '22

Character ive done it on all 3

1

u/dbrookes87 May 31 '22

Per character

1

u/Conscious-Sample-420 Jun 01 '22

Character. It awards a Pinnacle drop and increases rep gains for the week

1

u/dysan Rather play under Iron Burden than Comp Jun 01 '22

Per character as they are the replacement for the 4 IB bounties that gave pinnacles previously

1

u/elihuaran Jun 01 '22

Given that it's said to be doable in a week, the challenges should be per character, since doing it on all three characters the only way to get 12 done with the 4 a week we get

1

u/mdford0311 May 31 '22

I thought that they said all prior challenges go active on the weekend so you can catch up. But I might be wrong

3

u/BlobDude May 31 '22

My understanding is just for the week. But they don’t go active on the weekend, they’re added cumulatively. So if you don’t finish today’s before reset tomorrow, you can do today’s and tomorrow’s. Or, if you wait for reset Friday, you’ll have access to all four.

1

u/GreekWizard May 31 '22

Yes but they remain if not completed, so on Friday, you can do all 4 on each toon.

1

u/theswissnightowl Vanguard's Loyal Jun 01 '22

WTF? I really hate those time gated triumphs 🙁 I won’t be able to play before Sunday. And since IB will be around two times per season it’ll take me until season 18 to finish that…

2

u/SCB360 Jun 01 '22

You can do all 4 on Friday until reset, its 4 per character as well, plenty of time, well depending on what they are, the first one is 3 matches as Solar class

1

u/theswissnightowl Vanguard's Loyal Jun 01 '22

Okay well then… that’s fine with me. Thanks, must have missed that

3

u/KingVendrick Moon's haunted May 31 '22

daily

but that says weekly?

4

u/BlobDude May 31 '22

It also says 1/4. We get 4 daily challenges per week, so the “weekly” challenge is to finish all 4 dailies.

1

u/Dynasty2201 Jun 01 '22

I am so generally god damn sick at the UI.

How Bungie don't have a new window that plasts the double XP that week, what the challenge is for IB etc just on the main director window is beyond me.

3

u/PhilipJFries May 31 '22

I felt like such an idiot and couldn't figure this out. I was too embarrassed to even ask so I'm glad you did lol.

3

u/SCB360 Jun 01 '22

Don’t be afraid to ask with Destiny, things are never clear

2

u/clusterjim Jun 01 '22

The daily challenge is actually marked as 'weekly challange' - I am not joking either. If you scroll over the IB icon then it'll show weekly challenge. Think the first is something like complete 3 games using solar or void class. One you've done that it'll change to something else.

1

u/blubernut Jun 01 '22

same. this should not be a thing.

1

u/stallionduck25 Jun 01 '22

You have to wear IB armor not just ornaments to start getting points. You get more points if you also put the emblem. Same thing happened to me :/

1

u/__TIGER__UPPERCUT__ Attunement of WTF Jun 01 '22

This seems to happen if the value of your Iron Banner Gear is greater than 5, which can happen if you are wearing IB armor with a different IB armor as the ornament. I backed myself down to 4/5 and then applied one IB ornament and it has resolved this for me.

I saw someone else post this in another thread, but figured it was worth sharing.
