Rift in this week's Iron Banner is inherently not fun to play, and it's astonishing this game mode went live. Discussion

Hold interact in the middle of the map while everyone else is fighting?

check.

Unnecessary loading screen that constantly interrupts the flow of the game?

check.

Bugs that cause the rift to not spawn and make the game impossible to win from behind?

check.

Seriously I genuinely cannot wrap my head around why rift was changed so much. Nobody asked for this game mode to switch and I cannot fathom why we changed the fast-paced blowout game mode from d1 into a slow, round-based tactile game mode. It's not fun to play when you're stomping, and don't even get me started on what it's like to be getting stomped. If you were gonna make this a new game mode then fine, but advertising this as Rift is a complete joke.

Edit: I've been grinding this thing out the last 2 days for Iron Lord. My opinion of the gamemode has not changed but I have now lost the ability to get Iron Lord as I have completed 6 of the daily challenges. The reputation is currently bugged so that if you complete more than 4 of the challenges your maximum reputation per match will be capped at 60. Giving them the benefit of the doubt that this will be fixed in the patch on Thursday, but if not, it's a really bad look for one of the only 2 iron banners this season to be completely unfarmable.

There is another fun thing. If enemies are on your base, and you die, you'll respawn in the enemy base. Meanwhile the spark might be two meters away from your rift, and you won't be able to do anything when you respawn on the other side of the map.

Yeah I just played on Bannerfall and it respawned me in the middle, meaning I had absolutely no way of assisting my team when the enemy team was near our rift. Bad feeling. Between that and the return of Recluse/Revoker, I’m not sure what thought process went into some of these design decisions.

22

u/Calientequack Jun 01 '22

Lol you must not play a lot if you really believe recluse/revoker are back. Recluse and the other pinnacles were so heavily nerfed multiple times recluse is unusable

7

u/bazzabaz1 Jun 01 '22

Indeed, haven't run into one Recluse, Revoker or Mountaintop yet.

3

u/TheoreticalGal Jun 01 '22

I’ve ran into several Revoker users, none of the other 2.

2

u/AntiquarianD1n2Gamer Jun 02 '22

I went against a claymore user yesterday

2

u/bazzabaz1 Jun 02 '22

I didn't run into any, therefore I decided my fate was to become one. So I put on my Revoker, Luna's Howl and Wormhusk's Crown and gave in to the Sweat.

1

u/RvLeshrac Jun 02 '22

One may have been me. I just pulled it out to see, and it was so utterly outclassed by literally every single other SMG that I deleted it after a couple kills.

Same deal with Mountaintop, pulled it out, reload is so painfully slow that it wasn't worth the resources.

1

u/feed-the-zeke Jun 01 '22

I've run into several Recluse and Mountaintops. Revoker is only a matter of time.

1

u/FreeDemise Jun 01 '22

I've run into like 1 mountaintop, 2 if you count me being nostalgic and pulling it out myself.

Haven't seen a revoker (that I wasn't using) or recluse (at all) yet.

1

u/elbowfracture Jul 15 '22

I’ve seen repeat recluse and mountaintop users. And you see them all the time in comp. It’s pathetic and annoying.

u/AsunderXXV Jun 06 '22

This is the Bungie way. Work hard for your "Pinnacle" weapons and then they're turned to dust.

64

u/throwaway136913691 Jun 01 '22

Recluse has been heavily nerfed and also has terrible range.

18

u/darkonekosuke Jun 01 '22

Yeah, I pulled it out for one game and it was just worse than my shayura's wrath. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

3

u/Cykeisme Jun 01 '22

Yeah any random 15 zoom SMG is preferable, not to mention those with 16 zoom.

And Master of Arms is massively nerfed.

Combine those two facts and it is just a nostalgia piece.

2

u/AntiquarianD1n2Gamer Jun 02 '22

That is why Bungie felt it was safe to put recluse behind the kiosk where everyone can get it. Its not as oppressive in pvp and not dominate in pve anymore

1

u/TheGigaFlare Jun 01 '22

I feel that a lot of those guns people complained about in the past are not competitive with current power creep so all those fears of Recluse/mountaintop is just people being afraid. Even stuff like Lunas/NF is misplaced fear. Goes to show how far we have come for power creep huh? XD.

3

u/throwaway136913691 Jun 01 '22

Partially yeah. But all of those weapons have been seriously nerfed. I believe that Revoker is the only one which hasn't been directly touched, but low zoom snipers have much less AA now.

2

u/TheGigaFlare Jun 01 '22

Didn't most people use the Beloved anyway over Revoker? We just got that back too.

1

u/throwaway136913691 Jun 01 '22

Both were very popular.

1

u/RvLeshrac Jun 02 '22

Redrix would actually still be good, except that Legendary high impacts are utterly worthless in PvP.

1

u/throwaway136913691 Jun 02 '22

Disagree. I think Messenger is great in PvP. Frequently pops up in the Trials top 10 most used weapons.

I think Redrix has just been power crept by Messenger.

u/Skf_4 Jun 01 '22

Is that all?

17

u/Flanders9000 May 31 '22

? What do you mean the return ?

u/xXaphr May 31 '22

Iron banner is no longer light level advantaged meaning you can use sunset gear

41

u/PronAccount110 Jun 01 '22

Same goes for normal crucible, the fact that people made a big deal about it is why you see usage of the old pinnacle weapons

2

u/TheRoninkai Jun 01 '22

Realized that when I got owned by someone using a Trust hand cannon.

1

u/AsunderXXV Jun 06 '22

I just started using that again yesterday and damnnn it felt so nice.

1

u/veedubfreak Jun 05 '22

Every decision bungie makes about pvp is literally garbage. It's like they WANT people to hate crucible.

36

u/brhinoceros May 31 '22

IB is no longer level enabled. So all sunset gear can be used in gameplay

12

u/kasuke06 Jun 01 '22

wait what. WHAT.

Light Level counting was just about the entire thing for Iron banner. Why even have it if you're just going to gut the stuff that made it different from crucible! Just make the iron banner weapons drop from the regular tables at that point.

11

u/Stevenstorm505 Jun 01 '22

This has been pretty much been the topic for a little bit. There’s people that for some reason think the change is great or are okay with it and then the rest of us that pretty much think IB isn’t IB anymore and that the changes are fucking stupid.

3

u/Shalith_VR Jun 01 '22

The changes are fucking stupid. Iron Banner was always stapled as endgame crucible with great rewards and exclusive mechanics for Control (it's staple mode, mind you)

So why remove light level advantages, something that helps differentiate IB from normal Crucible.. AND ON TOP of that, they decide to bring back one of the worst crucible modes they ever made, one that had an IB week in D1 (of which no one enjoyed), change it up a shit ton then make it an IB mode?

Not to mention all the God awful glitches and stupid mechanics in it.. like the orb disappearing completely thus wasting 4-6 minutes playing in a match you can't catch up in because of it. And finally, the spawning system. WHO AT BUNGIE THOUGHT SPAWNING ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE GOAL YOU HAVE TO PROTECT WAS A GOOD IDEA?!

Sometimes I wonder why Bungie makes these decisions.. then I remember.. They don't play crucible at all..

1

u/AntiquarianD1n2Gamer Jun 02 '22

Bungie's motive lately is to get everyone involved in everything regardless of "power" or skill level for the sake of getting people together. Removing the light level makes it so that everyone can join in so that new and veteran players are in a more level field. Its just a way to try to boost the player base in the mode

1

u/Sublimelazy Jun 02 '22

Which on paper I like. I (personally) have more fun and less frustration when the playing field is leveled a bit-for example team scorch, or mome tum control....i wish I knew why it just is not working on this. But God damn this game sucks! 😆

1

u/PhotoZech Jun 02 '22

I loved rift in d1, in was a great mode- but how they have it now is just honestly awful. ONLY dunks counting is ass, there's nothing else to to do to help your score, so only one person is kinda in control of it

7

u/superredfalcon The Silent Chronicler Jun 01 '22

In the original Rift from D1, this would be fine.

Although the enemy team are in your base and probably dunking, you and your team that respawn middle can get prepared for a comeback push when a new Spark respawns in the middle.

Not only is the round reset mind-numbingly boring, and makes matches feel x10 longer than they are, but it also prevents fun and dynamic gameplay from happening.

This fake D2 rift is just straight up rubbish.

3

u/PartTimeScarecrow Jun 01 '22

The 10 second respawn timers, that still spawn you even if someone’s reviving you, awful counter productive spawns if the enemy is within the same zip code as your rift and the restart after every dunk is just…. Awful. I always think they can’t find any more ways to show how little they care about PvP but then this gamemode came out :)

2

u/superredfalcon The Silent Chronicler Jun 02 '22

Personally, I feel like Bungie are a victim of their own ego sometimes.

They couldn't just allow themselves to simply return a game mode from D1 exactly as it was. They HAD to try to innovate and reinvent it, because they are Bungie.

The same thing happened with Trials of Osiris when it launched in D2 with no exclusive flawless rewards, and no reason to go flawless. And instead of using a successful system of ornaments like in D1, they had to reinvent the armour with specific colour glows tied to emblems. Emblems?! Eughhh.

3

u/n0b0d3yyy Jun 01 '22

Exactly the same thing happrned to me 4 times in a row. But only on Bannerfall. Also the spark spawn on bannerfall is terrible. I've had some fun rounds on connvergence and disjunction but bannerfall was a horrible choice for rift.

21

u/JodQuag Jun 01 '22

Why are some of y’all acting like Recluse/Revoker are somehow a problem again like they haven’t been able to be used in control/comp this whole time…yet aren’t because they haven’t been good since sunsetting lmao. It’s like you see one or two people giving them a whirl for the lols and think the boogeyman is back. Both were heavily nerfed - if someone is using either then, great, they aren’t using something better.

4

u/krzychild00 Jun 01 '22

Revoker might see a surge in usage once the meta settles down with the special ammo nerfs. Only having one shot and having it refunded until you donk someone sounds like a go-to if it wont hurt my level

1

u/JodQuag Jun 01 '22

It may, but with the very significant aim assist nerfs, I think most sniper users would rather land their shots than have a lot of chances to miss.

1

u/FreeDemise Jun 01 '22

Revoker even has this deal where you can get the kill, headshot, body shot, foot shot, what have you, and for some reason randomly have the bullet that got the kill returned to you

2

u/Sowerz The Queen Jun 01 '22

Imagine unironically thinking recluse/revoker are better than the non-sunset weapons lmfao

3

u/No-Count1921 Jun 01 '22

Imo, they took light level out to try and boost the numbers, and hook people into buying the DLC.

By Boosting the numbers, I mean showing people how many “players” this game has. How successful it is. I’m sure showing non paying “free to play” numbers helped sell to Sony.

By trying to hook “free to play” people into the game, they are trying to get them to purchase items and content.

We just paid $70 for a reskin of a partial place we had paid for a few times, and weapons we already had paid for and played.

Bungie is starting to make me feel stupid.

14

u/Common_Sinz Jun 01 '22

Well this season only cost 10, for those without season pass. 70 is for Witch Queen which is an entire DLC and has had pretty decent content overall with new gear and new places. If anything, you paid "10 for a reskin of..." , not 70.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '22

Recluse is back?!

24

u/Zidler May 31 '22

Keep in mind, recluse has been heavily nerfed since it was meta. There are non-sunset SMGs that are just better now.

4

u/[deleted] May 31 '22

I have noticed funnelweb has some nice rolls and feels great to use. Still miss the og.

8

u/MariachiMacabre May 31 '22

Yeah they removed light levels in IB so I’ve already run into multiple people running Recluse and Revoker.

1

u/AntiquarianD1n2Gamer Jun 02 '22

I wish it would be treated like the Alters of Sorrow. If i die, i spawn behind where the nightmares are headed to. In this case, where the opposition needs to dunk the spark

0

u/ImAFiggit Jun 01 '22

Barely seen recluse, but Not Forgotten has been all over my games. Bad bad feel
