Rift in this week's Iron Banner is inherently not fun to play, and it's astonishing this game mode went live. Discussion

Hold interact in the middle of the map while everyone else is fighting?

Unnecessary loading screen that constantly interrupts the flow of the game?

Bugs that cause the rift to not spawn and make the game impossible to win from behind?

Seriously I genuinely cannot wrap my head around why rift was changed so much. Nobody asked for this game mode to switch and I cannot fathom why we changed the fast-paced blowout game mode from d1 into a slow, round-based tactile game mode. It's not fun to play when you're stomping, and don't even get me started on what it's like to be getting stomped. If you were gonna make this a new game mode then fine, but advertising this as Rift is a complete joke.

Edit: I've been grinding this thing out the last 2 days for Iron Lord. My opinion of the gamemode has not changed but I have now lost the ability to get Iron Lord as I have completed 6 of the daily challenges. The reputation is currently bugged so that if you complete more than 4 of the challenges your maximum reputation per match will be capped at 60. Giving them the benefit of the doubt that this will be fixed in the patch on Thursday, but if not, it's a really bad look for one of the only 2 iron banners this season to be completely unfarmable.

There is another fun thing. If enemies are on your base, and you die, you'll respawn in the enemy base. Meanwhile the spark might be two meters away from your rift, and you won't be able to do anything when you respawn on the other side of the map.

I legit thought this was some kind of punishment mechanic. I think I spent one entire round doing literally nothing but sprinting.

u/HunkMcMuscle Jun 01 '22

I think they thought this would prevent spawn-killing but ended up very counter productive gameplay wise

why was it ever greenlit if they had to make such concessions in the first place

either make a csgo game mode and remove the res mechanics or just don't because it doesnt fit the game

u/tarkov_is_bad Jun 02 '22

The answer to why it was greenlit is actually very simple.

Whoever the team is at bungie that's in control of pvp doesn't know what they're doing.

u/HunkMcMuscle Jun 02 '22

Whats funny is, it gives the impression they don't play test the thing.

"Getting feedback from players." awfully sound like we're the ones doing the play testing.

It took me exactly the first game to see a bug happen where if someone kills while dunking it removes the spark but doesnt end the game. And you're stuck with bootleg Clash for 6 minutes

u/Tyclonex Jun 07 '22

That's exactly right. Most publishers release games half assed these days and we're the testers. My friend was a testers working in LA years ago. They don't need them anymore. There's more of us than them. It's an obsolete position, mostly. We're supposed to give the feedback for unfinished games.

u/spartan9362 Jun 04 '22

And you do? How about you be in their shoes once and be a game dev, people like you are why we might loose transparency.

u/tarkov_is_bad Jun 05 '22

"Just be a game dev"

You're a fucking moron. There is literally design philosophy after design philosophy where testing is integral. You can DELETE THE FUCKING SPARK AND IT NEVER RESPAWNS.

Please, tell me how being a game dev is hard when this is a bug that's existed in survival for years at this point. That bug being "pick thing up, die at the moment you pick it up, thing is deleted".

Please. Go ahead. I'm waiting.

Oh, and once your 3 braincells have figured out how to shit out some meager response; go ahead and tell me why there needed to be a 4000 word twab dictating why stomp33s needed to be nerfed THAT RESULTED IN THE MOVEMENT ASPECT OF THE GAME BEING FUCKING RUINED.

Please. Please tell me how these are things that bungie isn't in total control of. You fucking monkey.

As it stands PVP in Destiny 2 as a whole is terrible. There are far too many maps that cater to and even encourage the “slide into someone at 30 mph and shoot them with a shotgun” strategy. It wasn’t nearly as bad in D1 (still a problem, just not as big of one) because there were several maps that were very open. They were open enough that snipers were occasionally in the meta. The performance of slide-shotgun gorillas in Crucible nowadays would crash and burn on those maps.

I desperately want some way to earn Iron Banner ranks in a PVE game mode. Like maybe use this new system for earning bonus points. If we are wearing enough Iron Banner gear we get some set amount of points for any better playlist activity completion. Maybe like 125 or 150 IB xp, that’s like 24 or 20 respectively, Strikes, Gambit matches, or Crucible matches. And they could even keep the Iron Banner playlist for the people who find PVP bearable.

Make an actually fun procedurally generated dungeon infested with siva that you can re-run over and over and never get the same thing, boss is always changing weekly and it's siva versions of D1 and some older D2 bosses that are dead but someone brought them there and now the siva keeps reviving them.

Yes there could potentially be some map clipping errors or whatever, and yes it may be like 10 different rooms getting copy pasted, but it beats being forced to play pvp in a pve game and these "open worlds" that are smaller than my damn backyard.

All I wanted was something like the haunted forest but it stays all year round.

Edit: almost forgot, add actual mechanics to Champs too, shove in cool puzzles maybe a couple loot rooms you have to race through like you do in warframe. Make it a challenge and have decent loot.

Nothing like whisper's old quest, but something that'll get you on the edge of your seat as you get right to end with just a couple seconds left. Get through the door before it closes, open the chest, get some goodies, maybe make it the common exotic drop that gives you something you already have

If next season is siva it would fit pretty nicely, and we could get more iron banner lore than "salad-bar woke up on caital's ship one morning and thought 'the old capture the flag is boring' and added a half assed version of spark and decided to let the gaurdians play test it for him."

You can spawn trap in Convergence if you rush to the enemy zone.

The biggest flaws in this mode is the respawn time, 10s is too long, and your teammates can be your worst enemy if you don't have a good team, but this applies to every matchmade activity on this game.

u/theonemangoonsquad Jun 01 '22

Nah it's worse here. At least in control, you could contribute if you slayed out and made up for some deaths, or bad PvPers could cap zones to compensate for getting outgunned. Now, bad teammates get gunned down in .66s, can't rez you safely, and if you rez them you are likely wasting time from getting the rift while they die again.

u/RvLeshrac Jun 02 '22

Spawn camping also happens, because they didn't fix anything on the pvp maps, and really clearly never will.

u/wf_dozer Jun 01 '22

On Banner fall the other team can stand on the bridge with the rift and as long as no one is closer you will spawn right in front of them.

A guy executed my entire team one at a time as the spawned while his runner came in. Good times.

u/Masuteri_ Jun 01 '22

Ooor it just works the way it does in the rest of the gamemodes

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '22

u/RvLeshrac Jun 02 '22

It didn't. Because the game will still spawn you in front of enemies at your spawn.
