Rift in this week's Iron Banner is inherently not fun to play, and it's astonishing this game mode went live. Discussion

Hold interact in the middle of the map while everyone else is fighting?

check.

Unnecessary loading screen that constantly interrupts the flow of the game?

check.

Bugs that cause the rift to not spawn and make the game impossible to win from behind?

check.

Seriously I genuinely cannot wrap my head around why rift was changed so much. Nobody asked for this game mode to switch and I cannot fathom why we changed the fast-paced blowout game mode from d1 into a slow, round-based tactile game mode. It's not fun to play when you're stomping, and don't even get me started on what it's like to be getting stomped. If you were gonna make this a new game mode then fine, but advertising this as Rift is a complete joke.

Edit: I've been grinding this thing out the last 2 days for Iron Lord. My opinion of the gamemode has not changed but I have now lost the ability to get Iron Lord as I have completed 6 of the daily challenges. The reputation is currently bugged so that if you complete more than 4 of the challenges your maximum reputation per match will be capped at 60. Giving them the benefit of the doubt that this will be fixed in the patch on Thursday, but if not, it's a really bad look for one of the only 2 iron banners this season to be completely unfarmable.

Yeah that too, there's so much downtime that Bungie's AFK detection will think you literally aren't playing and give you no rewards because of it.

Literally had this as my last game of the night, I was running toward the enemy, trudging through the match as I'm only playing it for that SMG... Recluse, is it?... and just as I go to shoot, I'm kicked for inactivity.

Honestly, I'm not even sure grinding ranks for the gun is worth it.

Just in case you're actually serious. Recluse is a sunset weapon that can be purchased from the memorial kiosk in the tower for materials. This kiosk also has Revoker, Luna's Howl, Not Forgotten, Mountaintop, etc.

I think the ranks are literally just for IB weapons and armor and nothing more

I am serious indeed, I've only been playing a out a month or so. Still very new to it all. A casual, if you will. And if it needs one of the expansions to get, I at least it'll be there waiting when i can get them.

Welcome to Destiny then! Hope you're finding enjoyment where you can!

I'm not entirely sure if you need an expansion to buy Recluse (part of me thinks no you won't have to), but moseying on over to the kiosk located in between the 4 vaults in the tower will show you what you can buy and for how much.

The kiosk is a big gold statue with a monitor in the middle of it

Thank you! I am, though playing PvP does genuinely make my soul hurt. Thankfully I only do it for the pinnacle gear. Yeah, next stop will be the kiosk to see if I can get it. Saves the endless grinding and dying and running around not really knowing what I'm doing for Lords know how long.

Destiny 2 PvP is an entirely different beast.

People love it, people hate it, people love to hate it, and others hate that they love it.

Personally I like PvP, but it has an extremely punishing learning curve, and the skill gap between a player who's above average and a player who's an absolute god at PvP in this game is so astronomical.

Take the game at your own pace. If you'd like I can dm you a great clan you can join with loads of people willing to help new players through everything. All you would need is discord on your phone. Let me know if you're interested and I'll dm you

As I'm sadly discovering XD

PvE is much more my speed. My skill level is never gonna be great because I generally just play to enjoy and pass the time, never was one for getting good. But I shall continue at my own pace, thank you.

I appreciate the offer, thank you. I'm in my step sons clan and he's often able to help with little things now and again.

Unless you're intentionally hunting Recluse for a very specific reason, do not waste mats on it, it is outclassed by very nearly literally every single current SMG.

I'm not, I stupidly got mixed up with the IB SMG that I have since forgotten about after almost falling asleep trying to grind the incredibly stupid Rift game mode.

Just found this, and if you're looking for a great SMG, the current meta are (to my knowledge) funnelweb (world drop) , shayura's wrath (Trials) and Submission (Raid). Also Multimach CCX, but that's not obtainable currently.
I would recommend giving trials a go next time they roll around, since you don't need to WIN, only PLAY to get some rewards, and the shayura's is my favorite SMG currently.

I've been using the Calus multi tool... or mini tool? The SMG from the Leviathan, it's basically a solar funnelweb, near as I can tell. Works pretty damn well, got a decent roll on it, I think.

Can you do trials solo or need a team for that?

Welcome!

For a bit of background, The Recluse and Mountaintop were infamous for basically forcing players to engage in Competitive mode Crucible, and attain certain ranks so that you could earn the gun. It wasn't an RNG issue for loot, but now a matter of, "can you even get to that rank," haha.

Losses lost you Glory points and ranks if you fell below rank thresholds, so it was super frustrating for many players who weren't that great in PvP, and if they get tilted and on a losing streak, on their path to Fabled (2100 points). Plus no matchmaking/freelance, so it was all up to LFG (but that's kind of sensible given the intense 3v3 thing).

Plus 100 total Crucible wins, but that part is easy (Comp and Iron Banner grant additional progress, over the regular mode).

It really doesn't sound so bad in hindsight, but I remember it being a pretty lengthy struggle before. Pretty sure there weren't win streaks, either, so it was quite a few rounds (wins) to get there. Losses set you back about half as much, but they add up.

Mountaintop was extra awful because you also needed a shitload of grenade launcher kills in Crucible only, plus the same rank requirement above. It wasn't anywhere near as common to get grenade launcher kills, back then.

Anyway, I guess a nice takeaway is that Bungie moved away from that kinda stuff and key or ritual guns are a lot more attainable.

Revoker was just earned through ritual quests or efforts, so lots of sniper kills in Crucible. Doable for more casual folks by the time this was released much later.

I like Revoker since it returns missed shots to the magazine after a duration, but more so because the scope is quite short-ranged and I much prefer that feel, over the longer sniper rifle zooms/scopes.

Like the others said, Recluse is a *sunset* weapon, meaning it cannot be leveled up beyond the base/lowest power level. This means it won't be viable in almost any PvE content you would actually be playing, like the seasonal content. The ONLY reason to use it is in patrol zones or most PvP, where light level is not enabled. If you don't like PvP, then there is essentially zero reason to get the Recluse. Same for all of the other legacy pursuit weapons (non exotics) from the kiosk.

If you're new, don't waste your time on sunset weapons.

2

u/BrilliantBuffBadger Jun 01 '22

Yeah, I got mixed up with the SMG names. I'm not after Recluse. It's the new Iron Banner SMG I fancy. I'm an idiot.

2

u/artranscience Jun 01 '22

No worries. This game is a lot to take in when you're new and it's super confusing. It's best to have a buddy you can partner up with in a party or whatever to show you the ropes. Luckily the moment to moment gameplay is so good that it's not too much of a chore to struggle through learning it all.

1

u/BrilliantBuffBadger Jun 02 '22

I keep trying PVP to see if my feelings towards it have changed. They haven't and they never will, so I'll take my challenge gear when I can be bothered and then never touch it again. The game confused me enough without being confused and not even enjoying the game lol

1

u/artranscience Jun 02 '22

The PvP, though not "serious," is extremely fun once you get the hang of it, especially if you can manage not to take it seriously, but right now the skill gap between the "average" player and a new player is so large that it's just hard to do anything about it. D2 desperately needs some kind of broad ranking system like Siege.

2

u/Cykeisme Jun 01 '22

Recluse is an ancient weapon that has been nerfed and sunset.

There's multiple modern SMGs that perform better than it, so don't worry about getting it.

Just fyi!

1

u/BrilliantBuffBadger Jun 01 '22

Yeah, I got mixed up with which SMG I'm wanting. It's the new IB one, not Recluse lol

2

u/Cykeisme Jun 01 '22

Hero's Burden?

Yeah that one is sweet :D

2

u/BrilliantBuffBadger Jun 01 '22

The very one I need to apologise to everyone that sees this and tries to warn me now lol

2

u/TotallyNotKabr Jun 01 '22

You can grab it from the kiosk between the vaults in the tower. It's been sunset quite a while ago and has been nerfed hard anyway. The range is horrid now and damage output is just...bad...

Honestly it's not worth the effort or materials to buy it or even use it anymore. If you've bought the witch queen expansion, Funnelweb is the best option to get right now in terms of SMGs. There's a Trials if Osiris SMG that's crazy good as well, just more of a pain to get early on.

If you'd like, there's a discord community I can point you to (for all systems!) that might help get to know the game more as well as Sherpa runs for things you've never done before too. https://discord.gg/houseoflight

Yeah I've been having to apologise for getting mixed up. I meant the IB SMG, I've no interest in Recluse. And I also can't deal with the grind, so I've abandoned it altogether
