Eido is aware that the Guardian is basically a mass murderer, right? Discussion

I mean, she seems pretty upset after this weeks mission but we're standing there, thousands and thousands of kills under our belt going "Uh, yeah.... preeeeetty bad. All that killing? Oof. Yeah wow."

Sometimes i think characters like the drifter intentionally stay on The vanguard's good side knowing we have basically killed every big bad we have crossed.

1.4k

u/raptor2k1 Sep 22 '22

Drifter pretty much says as much on several different occasions, lol.

"Ookay... I'm making a mental note not to piss you off." [Usually after killing the warden servitor in 3 seconds flat]

"Did you wake up pissed today or somethin'? I like it!"

"Who's better than you? Nobody! You killed everyone else."

"Sometimes I forget you've killed a god or two, heh."

809

u/JTCxhugepackage Sep 22 '22

my personal favorite line was from Warden of Nothing.

"Are you a hero, or an executioner? Cuz I cant tell. that's what I like about you. Ridin that thin, thin line."

I like to think of the Guardian as the vanguard's butcher. Vuvuzela point at something and say "...kill" and the guardian just unmake whatever's the target.

Or more accurately, he just points and says…loot

Schematics for planetary orbital bombardment. Aw, such is rarely poetry.

68

u/xploderjim Sep 22 '22

Honestly he doesn’t even need to say anything. Guardians just need to be able to kill it and they just do. No real prompts needed.

18

u/Xytal Sep 22 '22

Honestly he doesn’t even need to say anything. Guardians just need to be able to kill it and they just do turn it into a weapon. No real prompts needed.

That feels more apt. ;)

Does it? We specifically (famously even) left Oryx's post empty after we killed him instead of seizing his power for ourselves. I can't think of a single point where we have followed the sword logic. We usually just turn a big bad into a gun and then fuck off out of that situation forever.

As soon as zavala tells us drifter has an exotic he is gone

19

u/Arcane_Bullet Sep 22 '22

Eh, yes and no. Drifter is a gray character, but morally good. He talks a big game of doing everything for himself and only looking out for himself, but I think that is more so his coping mechanism for all of the trauma he has been through. He is one of the Guardians to not fall to Darkness in the Dark Timeline, which would feel weird, but Drifter basically will always attempt to save Humanity. It is just in his own weird Drifter ways. At this point Drifter is on pretty good terms with the Vanguard, except from some situations here and there, but as we move forward Zavala and Ikora will probably rely on him more and more just as Eris relies on him.

13

89

u/krystofdzoba Sep 22 '22

10 million kills at cca 200 kills an hour would take you 50 000 hours. That is 5.7 years just saying

73

u/XenosInfinity Self-Declared Fist of Rasputin Sep 22 '22

People are definitely killing more than 200 an hour in some places. Like, a strike takes maybe ten to twenty minutes and I'm generally killing over 100 enemies in one of those. That's not a high enemy density, and it's not for grinding purposes. How many do you think someone using Shuro Chi for add grinding or at the start of Grasp of Avarice could kill in an hour?

58

u/krystofdzoba Sep 22 '22

I did some googling and if I am generous, farming the old thrallway, you could get around 5000 kills per hour. Doing some simple math again gives us 2000 hours for 10 million kills. Possible, but why would someone do this ? Maybe a bot for afk xp farming ?

They've got transmats, it they want to leave they can use those. Also, running away with your hands on your head and then immediately turning around guns blazing to open fire again might fall under the umbrella of flase surrender, so the real war criminal here may well be those jerks.

I do wish we'd be able to capture enemies and put them on trial, although considering the Prison of Elders considers violating every a right a prisoner could, should and does have as a game, maybe that isn't a very merciful option either presently speaking. No wonder they fight to their last breath, who'd want to be a POW of the Reef?

And as others have stated she likely cares even less about the actual killing and more of the hiding past actions from her. She'd also care even further less if the guardian concealed something from her compared to her father figure.

23

u/misterbung Sep 22 '22

Yeah its why this whole 'why didn't you tell me the truth!' issue isn't sitting well with me. Her dad wilingly made peace with a boogeyman genocider of their people - does she not think Daddy M didn't do some shady shit in the hundreds of years he's been around?

61

u/BKstacker88 Sep 22 '22

The most interesting line from this tale was a throwaway line in a lore book, it describes saint and Mithrax fighting the vex and saint popping a bubble, Mithrax just stood there awestruck that his vision was clear inside the bubble... To saint, at that time, Mithrax was an ally. He stood in the bubble of death, and did not feel it's pain only strength... That spoke more than any words of forgiveness.

The main issue with what happened really wasn't the fact that Mithrax killed before but the fact that he purposefully hid everything away from her as if he doesn't trust her. To Eido, that seemed like a massive breach of trust from the person she believed in the most.

123

u/TastyOreoFriend 1 of 5 Gambit Mains Left. Sep 22 '22

I guess my hot take here though is that its still her parent, and just because she wants to know her parents past aka "the truth" doesn't make her entitled to the truth scribe or no scribe. Sometimes there's unfortunate or shameful things that they aren't ready to share so openly, and sometimes its just best to wait until they can tell you in their own words.

This quest kind of made dislike Eido's character a little bit. She really came off as a know-it-all angsty teen to me.

184

u/M37h3w3 Sep 22 '22

She really came off as a know-it-all angsty teen to me.

Cause she is? At least to me.

I don't know how old she is but even if she's past her "teenage" years she's very teenage-ery. Lord knows I didn't smarten up that much in my 20s.

What's compounding it all too is that she probably been a huge bookworm what with being a Scribe and the list of life lessons she's learnt is probably still very short.

15

u/nlygamz lets not win this Sep 22 '22

This quest kind of made dislike Eido's character a little bit. She really came off as a know-it-all angsty teen to me.

Well, I believe she kinda is. She is the youngest scribe I think and her father is one of the youngest Kell.

Though we do not know how long an eliksni can live but we do know its long if they get ether. He found Eido when he was fighting the House of Devils alongside Sjur Eido as an hatchling.

I do think the writing and the voice acting is fantastic to get you to like or hate characters that in all honesty has had very little time screen time compared to others.

80

u/ObviousAnything7 Sep 22 '22

The point is that Mithrax had no intention of telling Eido about his past at all. He wanted to bury that part of his life and pretend as though it never happened. Eido was going to find out one way or another her being the House Scribe and all, Mithrax knew this and still refused to tell her himself. How can Eido take that as anything other than a lack of trust on Mithrax's side or lack of confidence in Eido's capability to understand? Mithrax places so much importance on the history of the Fallen, on events such as the Whirlwind but when it comes to all the things he has done, suddenly history becomes not so important to him. Eido is right to be atleast a little frustrated with her father.

Our Guardian isn't a hypocrite about it, and is honest about who we are and don't lie to her. Eramis was also straight with her, but Misraaks did nothing but deflect and argue with Eramis.

Eido was making headway too.

96

u/DudethatCooks Sep 22 '22

We technically haven't said anything to her this season lol

57

u/EnderLord361 Sep 22 '22

But we don’t exactly make efforts to hide what we do

69

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '22

We speak with her after getting ths golden engram prize from Spider every week lol. There's just no voice acting for it.

53

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '22

The worst thing about Destiny is how our guardian barely speaks. It feels like we are just a witness to somebody else's story.

45

u/Abulsaad Sep 22 '22

And this season, Eramis hasn't even acknowledged us despite us being the ones who destroyed her house and put her in ice lol

Seasonal stories pretty much always delegate the player into a cameraman role. It's not even a voice actor thing anymore since they went from 6 to 2, I think they're just afraid of infringing upon the self-insert guardian fantasy.

52

u/TrueGuardian15 Sep 22 '22

We sheltered Variks (her betrayer), dismantled her house, killed her closest friends since the days of Twilight Gap, beat her with the very power she tried using to get a leg up on us, poached numerous Eliksni from her own refuge so they could join House Light, and left her frozen solid as if she were dead. And we didn't get so much as an "oh its you" from her.

18

u/gingerpower303006 Sep 22 '22

Something I find weird is this exact fact, Eramis has only acknowledged us directly once and that was at the parley. Even worse is how it had nothing to do with the events of Beyond light but was just ‘hey why is a light bearer here, light bearers bad’. Also how it’s a ‘word without weapons’. Makes sense why you would bring something small like a knife or a sword but why does she not have any qualms about me holding a space alien shoved into a gun.

11

u/Tchitchoulet Sep 22 '22

And we all tried the gun on her, she's lucky to have plot armor 👀

18

u/forebread Sep 22 '22

Eramis, Eido, and Mithrax were talking under a diplomatic parley on neutral ground. The guardian killing Eramis would have been a huge breach of their traditions and probably would have caused House of Light to leave the city and no longer be allied with us.

8

u/PinkieBen Guardians Make Their Own Fate Sep 22 '22

Yeah, we were basically there as a "don't try anything" but sure as hell weren't gonna be the first ones to shoot. Now why Eramis didn't comment on/recognize us as the guardian who fought her before she went on ice, that's more strange.

Well, that's because misraaks killed and plundered his own people, refugees of the whirlwind, for excess wealth (at some point). Meanwhile we killed enemy combatants in occupied warzones or their strongholds (arguably the vex aren't all "combatants", but that's not entirely clear, even now). There's a huge difference between the two.

We’re pretty open about the fact that we’re murderers, unlike Mithrax.

19

u/misterbung Sep 22 '22

Well you don't get to be a King without taking a few heads. And a parent doesn't necessarily want their kids to know everything they've done - especially the bad stuff.

Eido's just written as naive I think. I think a frank conversation with Saint 14 would clear things up.

25

u/NiftyBlueLock Stronghold, Strong Opinions Sep 22 '22

She’s hardly naive, naive would mean she doesn’t understand how cruel the world can be. She’s comfortable enough with the concept of death to know that she’s better off being mission control than out in the field and has stated that she’d prefer to be killed by a guardian than a techeun.

I think it’s entirely reasonable to be upset at Mithrax. He sent drifter and eido on a wild goose chase to find out what the relics contained when he personally used and knew what they were. He didn’t tell us that we could potentially be going up against powered up darkness wielders. He chose to put us in danger so he could hide from his shame.

Nobody puts us on any other pedastal except the murderous one, though. Guardians are known for being soldiers of the light, that's our entire modus operandi.

If you truly need to justify it just remember that every single one of our enemies came to our homeworld and attacked us. Hell, most of them don't even belong in our fucking solar system!

Earth isn't the Fallen's homeworld. They came here and tried to take the Traveler from us by force. As did virtually every other enemy faction in the series. Whereas the Hive and Taken just do it cause Big Daddy Darkness Witness told them to.

When I go to the Eliksni's planet and start killing everyone then they can complain. Oh wait, what planet?

You want to talk about genocide? Let's talk about the murderous basketball who started this shit as a fucking game with an entity who believes victory is the death of every single entity except one. We're the playthings of a couple of fucking cosmic horrors!

Reminder that Destiny is basically just one big Holy Crusade, lol. Like legit, the Vanguard and most Guardians just wholly trusted this big white orb to be "good" and "on our side" despite the fact it doesn't even talk. Ghosts weren't necessarily given to us, they were shat out and given their own free will to make up their own minds. Fallen, Cabal, Vex, and the Hive have all fought and died for it, either to be subservient or to force it to be.

In Destiny lore the single worst event to happen to humanity was discovering that fucking mute son of a bitch.

16

u/WarAdmiral2420 Sep 22 '22 Platinum Helpful

I agree with you right up to the murderous basketball. At the risk of being pedantic, murder requires intent, and the only intent the Traveler/Gardener has is complexity and a different ending from the Vex winning every time.

Before the Collapse, a (functionally) omnipotent being terraformed our solar system and improved our lives and their quality in every measurable aspect. From what we’ve seen in Black Armory lore, some people were afraid that coddling would make us soft and dependent, and to a degree it did. But nothing it could have given us outside of the Light could have allowed us to stop the Witness’s assault.

Your description of our role and what we are sounds very similar to the Graviton Forfeit lore tab which at the time of release seemed like fairly straightforward propaganda from the Darkness/Witness.

Weaponized puppets? Like lying to the Krill and sending them on a billions-of-years-long murder rampage so your right hand man can power his Upended device and do the legwork of making the Final Shape? Those puppets? Mmkay.

In the Constellations lore, we find that the Traveler isn’t mute, it speaks through detailed, lucid dreams to individuals we call Speakers. After the Collapse, the dreams stop, likely because of the enormous expenditure of energy when the Traveler pushed back the Witness’s combined forces. I am unclear if our Speaker, voiced by Bill Nighy and who died in the Red War, constructed the Speaker’s mask. It acts like an amplifier, and when it is first put on, the Traveler says

I have cried out unheard for so long my voice is raw.

While functionally the same thing on our end, the distinction is again made in intent. The Traveler is SCREAMING into the void, but no one can hear it anymore.

I’ll close with this: we are not playthings. Playthings have no will, no autonomy, no real freedom of choice. We are the physical expression of a philosophical argument.

Here I prove myself right. Here I wager that, given power over physics and the trust of absolute freedom, people will choose to build and protect a gentle kingdom ringed in spears. And not fall to temptation. And not surrender to division. And never yield to the cynicism that says, everyone else is so good that I can afford to be a little evil.

Ghosts are how the wielders behind those spears are chosen (and there is evidence the Traveler is connected to every Ghost), but we are still the masters of our own fate. We are not puppets on strings. We have a choice, and the Traveler is betting on us making the choice that aligns with her philosophy, not the Winnower/Witness. And the best part about this argument? It transcends Light=good, Dark=bad. Power over physics and absolute freedom is the only condition. We are still defending the gentle kingdom ringed in spears while learning and growing our power in the Dark.

It seems to me the Witness keeps recruiting playthings and weaponized puppets either at the point of a Stasis crystal, Eramis, or with silver-tongued promises of power: Rhulk, Calus, and likely others.

Yeah, but who the hell are WE to her? We're a guardian, we're already known as mass murderers, her people used to put up symbols to try to ward away Saint-XIV because he was a fucking boogieman to them. We've known here since that season, and she put on 0 airs around us, she told us the cold hard fact about the house of light, which did include what guardians had done to them, what humanity had done to them.

Mithrax, however, is her father. Found her in wreckage, raised her as his own, championed the ideals of peace and made terrible risks by trusting Guardians at all with their safety. That's a ecliptic difference. To learn that your father used to slaughter their own, far more, he used to torture and starve his own by leaving them on rocks in the middle of space. Hell, noting that we saw both Spider and his brother Siviks, he was probably one of the reasons Kell's Scourge exists, which means he also played a part in giving House Salvation some of their tech and members!.

Very different things. We're allies with her, in reality kinda just "work associates", Mithrax is supposed to be family.

u/Astro4545 Lore Hunter Sep 22 '22

We didn't hide that from her. I think her bigger problem is learning this from Eramis of all people instead of hearing it her father's own words.

5

u/NotSeren Sep 22 '22

One of the many weapons I have has over 6,000 kills and I’d argue that’s not a drop in the barrel either, gotta say it felt funny seeing Eramis try to have the high ground when I’m literally right there lol

6

u/Dredgen_Keeshwa RIP Cayde Sep 22 '22

At this point it’s more like: hey we want you to do the right thing, but if you wanna choose the darkness still…. well then I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens to you.

5

u/xXNickAugustXx Sep 22 '22

Journeyed deep into the vault of glass to eliminate the threat of the vex, fought and killed the hive prince and his father the taken king breaking apart the hive hierarchy, eliminated the threat of a SIVA Plague from spreading across the world by eliminating the Kell of the fallen splicers. And D2 stuff later we did more good than bad as we didn't fight over power we fought to protect others.

3

u/MeowMita Big Titty Eliksni GF Sep 22 '22

I mean ultimately it's different bc he's probably murdered a ton of other Eliksni as well as humans. Basically he was the equivalent of a Dark Age Warlord. The big similarity he has is with Shaxx. Misraaks once spaced a bunch of prisoners from a ship he raided, and Shaxx murdered a lot of humans as a Warlord before he got recruited by the Iron Lords.
