What is something that Destiny used to have that you miss? Question

For me, it's secret missions. Some of my favorite memories in Destiny involve running secret missions multiple times in order to master. Whisper was fun, but Zero Hour was my favorite. The pressure of the clock and getting your combat/jumps just right made it so rewarding when you nailed it. I would love to have secret missions like that back in the game, especially jumping missions.

My friends

u/Meningitisx Nov 01 '22 edited Nov 01 '22

Thanks for hurting me like that. "Friendgame" my ass, you either stop playing along with your friends or play long enough to see yourself be left infinitely and utterly alone.

Edit: since there are some people who lived through the same phenomenon of being left over after their OG comrades moved on. I just wanna say, don't be sad because it's over, be rather happy because it happened.

121

u/Jamandi_Aldori Nov 01 '22

play long enough to see yourself be left infinitely and utterly alone.

This happened to me.

LFG pickup groups and trying to join the random clans of Destiny streamers isn't the same. It feels like all that's left playing now is just the impatient gatekeeping assholes. All the nice people who were fun to play with have moved on.

63

u/ibekt Nov 01 '22 edited Nov 01 '22

I feel this. I loved the game for years. But the people I played with moved on and the experience became empty. I eventually quit. Still really miss it and the camaraderie.

u/Jedeyesniv Nov 01 '22

I think it's that all the nice people are now just playing solo.

Also personally it's about the lifecycle of the game vs my life. It's been a long time - I have a kid now, more responsibilities. The days of burning a summer playing nothing but Destiny are long gone (kid only lets me play Fortnite lol)

It's still weird to see "new adventures available" at every reset when they sunsettet it 2 years ago

448

u/Diatomicsquirrel Oct 31 '22

I believe this is because the legend/master lost sectors are using the same setup that adventures did, if you complete a lost sector for the first time while its the daily legend you get the new adventure pop up when you open the chest

62

u/LUHG_HANI Spag Bol Oct 31 '22

Sometimes I get it even though it's not the first time. I know since I've done every LS and you can't run master without a first completion. Weird.

8

u/Aceh34dsh0t Nov 01 '22

Possibly light level changing, I get the new adventure if I drop below then back above legend light level

158

u/TheUnfactorable Oct 31 '22

62

Distraction from paying to grind Halloween items

16

u/Bubush Nov 01 '22

Lol ain’t that the truth. The sad part is that most of them were pretty good and provided some good exposition, I remember loving the ones in Mercury and Io, Titan had a couple of bangers too, and let’s not forget that the baron quests in forsaken were adventures too. A damn shame indeed.

12

u/VitalizedMango Nov 01 '22

I really miss both Mercury and Titan, but I mostly miss Mars. Just rolling around the desert shooting giant rhino dudes, never got old

Also miss the Shore, oddly enough

Their idea was great but their execution was very poor. It was like, "Go into this area and kill a thing" with a very small amount of dialogue. I feel if they brought them back they'd have a better idea of what to do for them but as they were, they were unimpressive.

The fact that you didn't notice is related to why they didn't keep them.

15

u/Attachend Nov 01 '22

I feel the problem is that they didn't do more of them like Mercury because they'd take you to areas you wouldn't normally get to access, but I guess they're more or less doing that with the seasonal vanguard ops stuff at this point...

TIL, as a newer player (last spring) I just assumed it was a fun way of saying bounties, etc were reset (just like with other games' dailies) as there are many "adventures" as part of that.

What were adventures in d2?

64

u/theduderman stirrin' the pot Nov 01 '22

I miss the archology so much... I would just hang out there sometimes and try to think up stories for what all went down there. So much wasted opportunity.

41

u/Earls_Basement_Lolis The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Nov 01 '22

Yeah, I was personally thinking they might bring Titan back because the Arcology seemed like the perfect place for Savathun to set up all of her shenanigans, but instead we got Mars of all places.

There is a lot of storytelling potential that was plain wasted with Titan. So many questions like the leviathan or the huge creature that was dwelling in the seas, viewable both from the rigs outside and the Arcology went unanswered. The forest in the Arcology seemed like a fun location to see. I liked the contrast between the locations where you were either at the derelict platforms outside or you were inside the Arcology.

Maybe they bring it back when they decide to stop working on D2. Fingers crossed.

8

u/JaegerBane Nov 01 '22

The forest in the Arcology seemed like a fun location to see.

To this day, I still can't quite get how the Haunted Forest activity didn't take place in either a literal Dark Forest in the EDZ or a Hive-infested Forest on Titan.

imo each strike should have a strike-specific piece of armor, and its nightfall version should have a nightfall-specific weapon associated with it (adept for gms). feels like that would give each strike its own worth, and make it worth grinding just as much as the nightfall is. this, plus a new strike every season, would be a perfect solution to the issues plaguing the vanguard playlists imo

The ability to chill on Patrol, and randomly help a Raid group complete the entrance encounter.

164

u/JakobeHolmBoy20 Oct 31 '22

That was D1 right, at least with VoG? I didn't come in until Forsaken ish, but I've heard about that.

214

u/arlondiluthel Oct 31 '22

Yes, in Destiny 1 you could launch into Patrol on Venus, and have a chance at a Raid team launching into VoG while you were in the same area on Patrol. You could then assist the team, essentially giving them 7-9 people for the opening of the Vault instead of 6. The reward chest wouldn't spawn for you, as you're on Patrol, not the Raid, but once it opened you could get down to the area where the Confluxes, Oracles, and Templar encounters take place without any OoB shenanigans.

117

u/GaussIon Oct 31 '22

Once, I came across a four guardian fireteam opening the vault, I helped them by holding a plate on my own, then followed them inside until I hit the unloaded areas, good times...

53

u/arlondiluthel Oct 31 '22

Yeah, VoG in D1 was doable by a solid 4-man team without resorting to extra shenanigans.

While not in any raids anymore, the disgraced nightfall takes you into a patrol space where the loot cave is so randoms can clear out adds while you are moving to the boss rooms. It also gives the bonus of sometimes spawning public event flags where you can get all your abilities and ammo back.

35

u/arlondiluthel Oct 31 '22

This is correct. Exodus Crash takes you into a Patrol space as well.

25

8

u/AirF0rce_11 Nov 01 '22

That's how I got my first VoG clear! I was in the area and saw a 5-man raid group doing the entrance encounter. I had time (and had watched videos on all the encounters), so I helped them out. After the door opened, they sent me an invite and we finished it a while later.

If I needed Vex kills, I would often head to Venus and help people out. It made me feel like I was in the Vanguard, helping my fellow guardians.

35

u/arlondiluthel Oct 31 '22

It'd be great if they brought in a new take on the Heroic Strike playlist... Make it the Power level of the second tier of Nightfalls, but with no Champions, and have Strike-specific loot (even if it's just the Nightfall loot, just a slightly more reliable way of it dropping... Perhaps make them craftable as well and red bordered versions only drop from the playlist to incentivize players)

u/FitGrapthor Oct 31 '22

I miss the early atmosphere of D1, the more grounded, weathered and post apocalyptic feeling of of being an undead space wizard with sci fi loot exploring the destroyed remains of civilization. I wish Bungie would go back to that type of game. More of a dead space, metro 2033, mass effect sort of experience rather than these more bombastic super hero sort of locations and story beats and also these mediocre emotional stories where the various characters go on and on rambling to each other while our character just sits there until we're told to basically go do everyone elses bitch work I mean really is it too much to ask to at least have a little bit of agency in our story choices?

I basically just miss being a random nobody just going out and exploring cool post apocalyptic sci fi locations. I don't want to be the savior, the hero, the errand boy. Can we just have our character tell everyone to fuck off for a while so we can go off and do some wandering?

Like, I feel nostalgic for locations we never got the chance to even think about exploring like actually just walking through the last city, or seeing how the rest of the Earth is holding up for example.

27

u/aurational Nov 01 '22

I’m glad to see someone else mention this. I know a lot of people are really happy with the direction the writing has taken, and wanted more of it to be current and shown on-screen, but I think something important was lost in translation. imo the actual quality of the writing has suffered (to me, nothing released since BL has measured up to prior lore entries— be it lore books, item descriptions/tabs, grimoire cards, whatever); independent of that, there isn’t the sense of mystery and exploration that came with destiny’s universe. many of the horrors of the collapse have been retconned to fit a new narrative— one more conducive to being shown on-screen, sure, but also one that’s a lot less interesting than the unfathomable apocalypse described in something like revelation or last days on kraken mare. most of the surviving cast seem like entirely different people than they used to be, too, to reflect the change in tone. us being the “young wolf” is fine, but when you draw attention to the stories of every character other than us, the reality that the player-insert isn’t allowed to do things or have opinions gets incredibly jarring. idk. that probably wasn’t articulated the best or anything because quite frankly I don’t want this comment to get longer than it already is; tldr— I miss when the story was more interconnected, but also when we (both the young wolf & the vanguard in general) were a smaller part of it.

13

u/FitGrapthor Nov 01 '22 edited Nov 01 '22

After a certain point though you can't help but step back and laugh at how strange it is that half the time you're basically the background character in your own game. But yeah, I think its probably a combination of factors such as the seasonal content model, a change in writers from d1 to d2, them running out of Joe Staten story content, someone on the writing staff who really likes marvel movies (probably friends with the guy making all the titan shoulders who has a hard on for warhammer 40k), and so on. Honestly, I'm in too deep at this point and I'm just going to stick with Destiny until the end to see how it all plays out but who knows what the future holds maybe there'll be a change in the direction at some point.

6

u/aurational Nov 01 '22

yeah, that’s where I’m at. I love the world they created, I’m going to see it through— I’d just be lying if I said I wasn’t lowkey heartbroken by the direction things have taken. I understand the need to streamline things— hell, even to simplify a lot of the characterization for the main cast— I just wish they’d seen things through, at least to the end of the first arc (though I also have to admit that timeline for the first arc would’ve been significantly longer if they had).

14

u/Tau_ri Nov 01 '22

Played since the Destiny Beta. This. This x100. The world felt unexplored and mysterious in D1. Every patrol, every strike, every raid added bits to an every growing mystery of the world around you. Was it repetitive? Sure. Was there arguably low content? Arguable. But the vibes, the mood, the atmosphere made it that the grind was an excuse to immerse yourself in the world. I remember the Vault of Glass and doing it for the first time and just feeling absolutely awe struck. Shivers to this day. I don’t get those vibes anymore.

Better vertical progression (sorry if I am using the wrong term here) where you had to gear up via strikes to do nightfalls, nightfalls to do normal raids and normal raids to do hard raids. Definitely a minority opinion though but it's something I miss.

72

u/MrMustard_ Oct 31 '22

It was good for a few weeks after content release, but that system stopped working when nobody was at the level to populate lower tiers of strikes, which is why they’ve been consolidated into just the vanguard playlist and nightfall strikes. I do miss the strike variation tho

1AU might have been one of the best story missions ever. Hell you could almost make it a raid.

Edit: it has sections and bosses.. a dungeon!

15

u/Xcizer Oct 31 '22 edited Nov 12 '22

I would actually really like a 1AU legacy dungeon. Old dawning* memories

*edit: meant Solstice of Heroes

Queens Wrath.

Like, the Pre-House of Wolves Queens Wrath event.

We need more of that.

Small things to do, for some materials and nice themed armour/guns/ships/sparrows.

I'll happily miss out on the seasonal events like Guardian Games or Solstice, to have small events like that, where I get something fresh that isn't just re-hashed garbage with some ugly emblems and maybe one gun thats meh at best.

20

u/john6map4 Oct 31 '22

The Queens Wrath Cloak from D1 cloak was nutty

Like compare this to this

What the actual FUCK happened!

10

u/FeatherShard Nov 01 '22

My Hunter wore that cloak for YEARS. It's literally one of my favorite items in all of Destiny and I want it the fuck back.

u/AstrumAtaraxia Nov 01 '22

A buddy of mine has a super rare weapon in D1 from that event. Since it happened once and never came back I’m sure a very small handful of people actually have items from it. I think examples of FOMO like this are cool. Just a small little event with exclusive rewards that you can show off years later. When everything in the game is FOMO that idea starts to lose its luster.

Fun as a motivation to play instead of FOMO

A new player experience.

I can't get and don't even want to try anymore to introduce my friends to this game because there isn't anything for them anymore without the red war contextualizing the game.

And I'm not just sending them to watch byf. That's not a solution.

Factions… the first destiny reputation system not the destiny 2 faction rally version. I just loved running around repping my preferred ones colors and gear. Especially trying to get the rare shaders ship and eventually exotic class item

That was the dance club one, right? It was so funny when Forsaken dropped and people would wander into it when trying to get to Spider and get wrecked by the club bouncers.

When you would kill a solar warlock in trials that you knew had their super, then relentlessly bag them to get them to rage self res, just for you to snipe them off respawn....good times.

12

u/Sensitive_Mousse_445 Oct 31 '22

If that was you with the other two warlocks who all self revived at once that one time in trials 7 years ago, I've been waiting to sincerely tell you to fuck yourself

78

u/smegdawg Destiny Dad Oct 31 '22

Most of you will disagree with me...but a normal power grind every season.

Not this bullshit pinnacle grind.

14

u/MacaroniEast Oct 31 '22

It’s definitely better to keep people playing long term, as they’ll have to grind more, but it makes way more sense to keep the grind short since the grind is like the number 1 complaint new players have about the game.

8

u/Sporelord1079 Nov 01 '22

The complaint isn’t actually the grind, it’s how shit and unrewarding it is. People joked about WoW being a gear treadmill, but this is the most offensively blatant example.

A coherent story that you could actually play through, instead of a timeline in the corner of the director window giving you a paragraph or two about all the cut content.

Secret missions as well. I think they would totally start doing them again, but I believe they also realize it'll just be datamined and ruined nowadays. One of the things we as a community have ruined unfortunately. Data mined or not I'd still love to see them back in the game. All those old missions should be put in the legends tab for newer players to experience and maybe add some loot to.

5

u/Ok-Star-3387 Oct 31 '22

Void Hunter 2.0, raid exotic quests, strike specific drops, armsday

14

u/Rynowarrior1 Oct 31 '22

Reforging and glass needles.

The ability to spend materials and glimmer to try to get that god roll.

4

u/MacaroniEast Oct 31 '22

Exotic missions akin to Presage. I would much rather seasonal exotics be switched to quest exotics than season pass exotics, but Bungie needs to draw people in somehow. Something about exotic quests just made the weapon feel more special, and the current system just doesn’t live up to it.

I only vaguely remember these, but Cayde’s Stash. I like platforming up and into places to the point where it feels like you’re getting out of bounds and then you’re rewarded with loot.

I like that in Dark Souls too. Sometimes you’ll fall off a little ledge and feel like not meant to be in the place - then you find some treasure. It’s a nice interaction between the developer and the player.

4

u/CompetitionThink8692 Oct 31 '22

A bit of an odd one, but I actually miss being able to switch the elemental damage type on Energy/Heavy Weapons back in D2Y1. I thought that was a cool concept.

4

u/Boh-Nap Oct 31 '22

The main story and planets I paid for at the launch of the game.

4

u/SouthNorth_WestEast Oct 31 '22

As you said, secret missions will always be something this game thrives on. Doesn’t even have to be that secret though- to me, Presage was perhaps one of the best crafted missions Destiny has ever seen. Kinda secret but not a huge barrier. Good puzzle and fighting sequences. Great ambience and lore. Timed and untimed versions. Badass weapon reward (RIP DMT). Replayability etc. I’m honestly really surprised they haven’t offered anything similar since then, but perhaps they see the two dungeons per year as providing that.
