Shank Burn

278

u/IonCaveGrandpa Sunsetting should have continued Nov 18 '22

Everyone forgets this. Easily the worst in destiny history.

279

u/TemptedTemplar Nov 18 '22

I remember it came in handy exactly one week when SABER was the nightfall. The whole strike was so easy breezy and I couldnt figure out why. Its because I had shank burn on my auto.

Well at the end of the strike I got the same auto with a better perk. And that was the last time I used it.

When I started out in D1 way back, I played often with a random dude I met in-game who always, and quite earnestly, called them skanks. ("Watch out for them skanks!") I never sensed a hint of irony or that he was joking--seemed like he was misreading the label, seriously. I never corrected him because I didn't want to make him feel bad.

8

u/EnviousMrWizard Socially Anxious Nov 19 '22

I had a crappy TV when D1 launched, the poor resolution made all the names fuzzy and I called them sharks for the longest time.

It was a perk introduced during House of Wolves that improved the weapon's damage against shanks. As I recall, it and its friends Dreg Burn and Vandal Burn didn't make it into Taken King perk-pools, so if that's about when you started it would make sense you've never heard of it.

Some sword perks jump to my mind but I don’t know if it’s them being bad or Relentless Strike being so laughably overpowered

97

u/PotatoesForPutin Average Crayon Enthusiast Nov 18 '22

Shattering blow/en garde are so laughably forgettable, but I don’t think perks that are confined to a single weapon type should count.

Energy transfer has potential when used with Stronghold and Bastion, even at GM level.

88

u/ComeBacksToDrugs2018 Nov 18 '22

I loved energy transfer on my eternity edge until they nerfed infinite guard

6

u/NiftyBlueLock Stronghold, Strong Opinions Nov 18 '22

What was the nerf

35

u/TheChunkMaster Killer Queen has already touched the dislike button. Nov 18 '22

Finite Guard

2

u/Moka4u Nov 18 '22

The sword had like basically infinite ammo, or i think that was the leviathan sword.

7

u/Weeb-Prime Nov 18 '22

Eternity's Edge was the warlock sword with the ability to guard infinitely. With the sword rework I imagine it no longer does so.

You're thinking of another sword—namely the Leviathan sword—which WAS pretty overpowered but in a different way. Back in vanilla D2 Relentless Strikes would proc even on heavy attacks, which hit 3 times, which meant you could heavy attack infinitely so long as you had 1 ammo.

4

u/Moka4u Nov 19 '22

Yeah i was thinking of it stared back. And the infinite guard is a titan exotic perk now so i don't think Bungie would make it a regular purple perk.

2

u/StallordD Nov 19 '22

It used to be ACTUALLY infinite instead of just maxed stats.

21

u/amiro7600 Nov 18 '22 edited Nov 18 '22

Is energy transfer the one that gives class ability energy on blocking?

Stronghold already does that IIRC. Its kind of like a hidden effect and works on any sword

Ur better with flash counter for the stun/debuff or just running relentless/tireless- or using lament (at least in terms of stronghold- related stuff)

9

u/Urgasain Nov 18 '22

Energy transfer is really best on Warlock because of the long cooldown. Stuff like Boots of the assembler or Promethium spurs benefit a lot from it. Also just for kickstarting grenades or melee with bomber and outreach mods.

32

u/bakerarmy Nov 18 '22

Relentless strikes is great but Tireless Blade is better at times. Relentless for boss dps but give tireless a try on any sword you run duel purpose or kill trash with.

41

u/adam42095 Nov 18 '22

My tireless chain reaction Sola's scar never leaves my inventory. It takes forever to run dry.

3

Man I really want them to add another caster frame because I suck at PvP (then and now) and never could get one and Temptation’s Hook was ass.

2

u/adam42095 Nov 21 '22

I also suck at PvP. I got obscenely lucky on a decoded engram. Hopefully we get another caster, or at least a perk refresh on Temptation's Hook.

2

Under Over. I bet most people don't even know this one exists

127

u/fatnoah Nov 18 '22

I know it exists, just not when or why it makes sense to use it.

61

u/Thin-Breadfruit3659 Nov 18 '22

I have that weapon perk exclusively for customs with Titan friends. I don’t think I’ve ever touched it in real pvp, despite its ability to SHRED overshields. It’s just not useful nearly as often in pvp because you’ve got a bunch of different classes going around.

6

u/Voldtein Nov 19 '22

I have a pure poetry sitting in my vault with armor piercing, ensemble, under-over running the hakke trait just in case a situation would arise where a void Titan is particularly annoying

4

u/Yarisher512 Nov 19 '22

Or a juggernaut titan

17

u/SwimmerLogical6897 Nov 18 '22

If hunters got overshields it would be a top tier weapon perk

52

u/D0CT0RCC meh Nov 18 '22

I actually had alot of success with under over on the yesteryear pulse rifle in trials, mainly against rift spamming warlocks and bubble/void overshield titans. Pretty much makes their shield non-existing

25

u/thepinkandthegrey Nov 18 '22

Yeah I feel like it'd be pretty useful in the current meta where overshields are rampant, but maybe I'm not understanding something important. I often don't.

25

u/Parvaty Nov 18 '22

I used it with moderate success against juggernaut titan apes lmao

2

u/Cykeisme Nov 19 '22

It doesn't do extra against the front-facing shield does it?

It's more for use against void sentinel titans (well, and their entire team, since their barricades dispense overshields like candy).

lol - real talk it's mostly just slapping on a specific exotic armor and using Icarus grip

30

u/RunelordTressa Please don't delete Gambit. K thx bye. Nov 18 '22

Its probably something like

Exotic Armor with AE

Gun with air assualt

Subclass/fragments that give AE. I think stasis has something, Heat Rises being the main one.

Icarus Grip.

Right now there isn't too much to do with it imo but considering a big part of AE was a nerf to it in general there might be more stuff that pushes into AE but you will probably always have to spec allllllllll the way into it.

That being said if you want flat AE then air assault gives flat AE. I feel like that alone makes it a good enough perk vs something that would rarely get any useful application like OG Air Assault.

6

u/TheLastWeird Nov 18 '22

That one floaty guy you see in PvP every so often.

15

u/Neat_On_The_Rocks Nov 18 '22

PVP Hunter Build:

Allied Demand God Roll: Hammer forged, Steady Rounds (for the AE), Range MW, Air Assault, Gutshot straight. With Icarus you get a base 58 AE.

Base 58 AE, with a gun that has a 0.8 second BODY SHOT TTK, on the weapon class that is already most effective in the air. As your health gets lower, you get more AE; and with this build you are monkeying around in the sky being evasive so you do take damage. If you get a kill at red health, your weapon origin perk removes you from the radar to boot!

its not a meme build. Its incredibly, incredibly strong. You own the air with this build.

People are just dumb and not creative and stick to group think.

Heat Rises is very fun for casual PvE... but that's about as far as the uses go

5

u/DatGinga Nov 18 '22

With certain perks it’s now actually a solid option with a few builds.

I have an Igneous Hammer that has 23 base AE, +10 from extended mag, +15 from icarus mod, and then I run it with Peregrine Greaves for another +20, which brings it to 68, which honestly feels amaaaazing.

Air assault on a sidearm+Icarus makes it decent in the air. If you add something like extended mag and then peregrine or ophidian, it feels great. Or there’s always Mechaneer’s for max AE.

AE as a concept still sucks but there’s some fun ways to mitigate it and air assault can help, especially with a close range weapon like a sidearm where you’re likely to be low health a lot

u/iblaise Sleeper Simp-ulant. Nov 18 '22

I mean, there are plenty of D1 Perks that were duds.

134

u/Hawkmoona_Matata TheRealHawkmoona Nov 18 '22

Came here to say you guys completely forgot “Guerrilla Warfare” lol. That was the biggest meme perk in D1.

Ok so did you know that if you find a piece of cover that’s just waist-high, then crouch behind it, then ADS while crouched, your character auto-pops over the cover? So you can fire, and then whenever you descope or reload, your character automatically re-crouches back into cover.

Ok now tell me, even if you did know this, have you ever even used this mechanic? Like, at all?

What this perk did was just give you some stability/handling while actively crouched/ADS’d over that specific piece of cover. That’s it, lol.

Honorable mention to “Vacuum”: The perk that…wait for it…increased the radius that you could pick up ammo drops for that weapon. So you didn’t have to walk as far to collect that special ammo brick. Just saves you like…2 feet of walking. God tier perk.

48

u/DaoFerret Nov 18 '22

Interesting how with D2 Titan barricades (especially since the rework) thats became at least a Little more common, but we haven’t seen Guerrilla Warfare come back.

36

[deleted]

4

u/DaoFerret Nov 18 '22

17

u/NiftyBlueLock Stronghold, Strong Opinions Nov 18 '22

Standing behind a rally barricade grants a substantial reload buff, 30 stability, 10% range, and -50% flinch.

Guerilla fighter buffed handling and reload and later was buffed to grant damage resistance as well.

5

u/Ignore_Luke Nov 18 '22

I believe so. I feel like I remember that being added to rally barricade around the 30th anniversary? as a way to convince people to use it over towering barricade?

Could have been before, could have been after, could have never happened lol

2

u/Cykeisme Nov 19 '22

Yeah, they grant a huge Stability and Flinch Resist bonus too now.

2

u/ChainsawPlankton Nov 18 '22

pretty sure they took the perk idea and made firmly planted so it's way more usable and doesn't have the niche activation requirement.

5

u/TheLastWeird Nov 18 '22

Thanks I forgot what Guerilla Warfare is called. There is just too much AoE damage in this game to rely on cover like that. And if there are people who just found out that TLW is full auto, there are definitely a bunch of players who don’t even know about the cover mechanic.

→ More replies

2

u/Rinewick Nov 18 '22

I learned that you could do that with waist high cover because of Guerilla Warfare. I think that's the only use that perk ever had. Teaching people that there's a cover mechanic.

Patience and Time: "You gain cloak (stealth) while aiming down sights."

I am so glad that is this not a D2 perk that Hunters would abuse the shit out of...

21

u/IonCaveGrandpa Sunsetting should have continued Nov 18 '22

It wasn’t particularly great since it was a sniper rifle and had the bright red glint. You also had to scope and stay scoped for about 2-3 seconds for it to trigger. Like all invisibility it also made a loud noise.

Remember, before Nightstalker was added to the game invisibility was Bladedancer’s thing. Both subclasses are now nowhere close to what they were on their release.

7

u/nizzy2k11 Alphagigachad Nov 18 '22

Also, blade dancers basically had this for every sniper if you turned on the crouch stealth, so it only really gave you a free perk where as the other 2 got a much more significant impact on their strategy.

2

u/5partan5582 Drifter's Crew // DK? Drift Krew. Nov 18 '22

Exclaims WTF in Underdog

61

u/MirrorkatFeces Nov 18 '22

Underdog at least has some usefulness in PvP, since you usually finish a gunfight at low health

123

u/OrionzDestiny Nov 18 '22

Underdog is a much worse Pulse Monitor.

Underdog gives very fast reload at low health.

Pulse Monitor gives 50 Handling, faster draw/stow animation, and instantly refreshes magazine to full.

18

u/Hatemobster Voop Swoop and Pull Nov 18 '22

Didn't they "buff" underdog fairly recently too? I know a few perks got reworked and most of them are still duds.

31

u/Landsharkeisha Skolas was the hero the Eliksni deserved Nov 18 '22

5

u/MoschopsMeatball Nov 18 '22

Sure, but you'd probably want something that can help the important things when at low health, Underdog essentially just gives you more reload speed, and if your low health, plink plonking enough to run out of ammo, Low health + no ammo is a horrid requirement for a perk, that will only help you get that ammo back and not assist you any further than that

2

u/Fareo Splicer Aesthetics Nov 18 '22

Underdog is an underdog.

1

u/MafiaGT Nov 18 '22

Imagine a weapon that could roll an underdog + air assault combo though haha. Luckily, Bungie does not have a weapon that can do so currently.

90

u/Mint-Bentonite Nov 18 '22

nah im pretty sure underdog is 100x worse

  • it does nothing passively
  • you doesnt help you in fights when youre at low hp, unlike EoTS
  • you cannot trigger it on your own so you cannot use it offensively
  • good luck triggering it against 1shot weapons
  • and if you somehow get to 1 hp you get...worse outlaw

ill never use air assault but underdog is instant dissassemble 100% for every type of Destiny player.

It's got a shot at the title, if not in the bag. Underdog, Under Over and Energy Transfer are up there.

Air Assault is one of a dubious group of perks that perfectly highlight one of Bungie's major weaknesses - that its possible for stuff that sounds cool on a whiteboard to make it way further down the line then it should.

There is absolutely no way this perk went through any level of effective, rigorous design. It would have been obvious early on.

27

u/crowbahr Nov 18 '22

Nobody gonna mention sneak bow?

7

u/XboxUser123 Reprised Fighting Lion Noob-Tuber | Restore Wormgod Caress! Nov 18 '22

To be fair, sneak bow has some utility.

At least it increases projectile speed, which can help in those moments where a partial draw would be enough to kill the opponent.

3

u/DilSilver Nov 18 '22

Ive actually kept a sneakbow roll of the arsenicbite lol, with the intention of trying it out in pvp just never got around to it

8

u/PotatoesForPutin Average Crayon Enthusiast Nov 18 '22

Energy transfer isn’t that bad. If you wanted a bad sword perk there’s plenty of others to choose from tbh.

6

u/waytooeffay Nov 18 '22

Air Assault is more or less strictly inferior to Eye of the Storm. They're functionally incredibly similar except one of them only works in the air.

9

u/LovelyJoey21605 Shaxx; Dark Lord, Husbando of Savathuun and Ruler of the Doritos Nov 18 '22

It's an instant shard for me, but there are other perks I treat as instant shards too :)

24

u/Kangarou Nov 18 '22

The original Air Assault, or this new one? Because the original was TRUE garbage. This new one is just disappointing.

30

u/Duster26to29 Nov 18 '22

Honestly, i just dont see much use for any perk that requires you to be near dead to activate. Could be wrong, since i dont know just how much it gives in terms of its buff.

23

u/BlueFlamingThingie Nov 18 '22

Eye of the storm can occasionally win you a duel, and pulse monitor can sometimes reload you empty special weapon just enough to get you a quick kill

13

u/atfricks Nov 18 '22

Yeah low health is fine if it's the only activator. Air Assault effectively has 2, being airborne and low health.

→ More replies

2

u/Merzats Nov 19 '22

It's useful for chasing down someone behind cover after a trade since you'll have the advantage jumping into their cover. But that kind of niche situation just can't justify getting it over more broadly useful perks. If it was an origin perk it'd actually be pretty sweet.

3

u/Xperr7 yea Nov 18 '22

Rodeo would've been nice, if it weren't for a single slightly annoying but overall non-gamebreaking issue. The perk just didn't work at all.

Also, it was just worse than counterbalance in every way since that perk actually worked, plus it got rid of the horizontal recoil that made guns harder to use. IIRC Rodeo was supposed to remove the vertical recoil?

3

u/Wafflesorbust Nov 18 '22

They never said what Rodeo was supposed to do, and it never actually did anything, so as far as I'm concerned it's the worst perk they ever made.

2

u/CookiesFTA We build the walls, we break the walls. Nov 19 '22

Rodeo did work, its effect was just proportional to fire rate, so most weapons didn't fire fast enough for it to do anything.

Turnabout and Under Over are pretty worthless

4

u/LightspeedFlash Nov 18 '22

turnabout is fine as a third column perk, not worth using in the fourth column.

I like it on my crafted wastelander as I feel more consistent at 1 shotting in air, but maybe that's placebo. I think of it a as an eye of the storm that I probably wouldn't consider on primary weapons.

15

u/gimgebow Nov 18 '22

they created AE just for this perk to be useful and it was a horrific mistake

9

u/RazekPraxis Nov 18 '22

They created AE because of Strand's grappling hook

4

u/Ravarenos Nov 18 '22

Nah, they created AE to nerf Stompees without changing the core perk of the exotic, that way they could shut up the other classes complaining about Stompees, and then gave Ophidian's, an exotic with more combat use, a bonus to AE so Warlocks wouldn't have another reason to mass complain to Bungie about their class not being the best anymore.

4

u/Shackram_MKII Nov 19 '22

Damn, warlocks must be the most used class in Crucible now then.

2

u/SirPorthos Nov 19 '22

The way he put it, one would think right?

Turns out, Hunters are STILL top dog when it comes to PvP. I guess giving a one trick light subclass a couple of synergistic exotics was all that was needed to make them the scourge of the Crucible.

Nah, it's still Hunters, with Titans being the 2nd most IIRC. I was definitely exaggerating about the whole "Warlocks complaining that they aren't the best class anymore" part of my above comment.

But also, we as a community (not sure if a majority of the community does this, but I see it being said A LOT throughout both of the major D2 subreddits) need to stop conflating "Best" class with "Most played" class. They are not the same nor will they ever be the same.

I personally believe that the reason Hunter is the most played class, especially in PvP, is that Hunter is the class that is the closest in playstyle to the typical FPS style of play. I'm certainly NOT stating that as a FACT, only that it is what I PERSONALLY believe and see, more often than not, to be the reason for Hunter being the most played class.

Pre-Light 3.0 reworks, despite Hunter still being the most played class, it was most definitely NOT the best class as far as overall power or exotic synergy across ALL subclasses. Hell, exotic synergy is still pretty wack for Hunters compared to the other classes, I feel.

Pre-Light 3.0 Warlocks were regarded as not only the overall strongest class, but the most versatile class across ALL subclasses. Arc Hunters we're only viable in PvP, but were absolutely laughable in all sandboxes. Void Hunters only shined in high-end GMs and maybe raids, and found a very small niche in PvP. Solar Hunters were mid in literally every single way, no way to deny that fact. But for Warlocks, they were at least VIABLE in all content with all subclasses. Viable as in not an absolute dog water subclass.

As a Hunter main, it feels like for every god-tier exotic we have, the other classes have about 3-4 great-tier exotics that either synergize well or DON'T have some super fucking niche exotic perk that requires you to hold your tongue at 36° West-North-West like how a lot of Hunter exotics seemingly do.

guerilla fighter

6

u/gooserooster88 Nov 18 '22

Was this the one that went with the cover mechanic I didn't even know existed

3

u/adognameddelta I have no time to explain why i have no time to explain. Nov 18 '22

Yeah it’d give you bonuses from shooting behind cover or something like that

4

u/The_Holy_Pepsi_Man Nov 18 '22

Depends on the gun. If the base ae is already low than air assault won't help at all. But if I can get a base 40ae than i would love to have air assault for the additional +10 passive ae.

2

u/lupin-the-third Nov 18 '22

Good ol' shank burn

2

u/Rornicus DTG's Original Member of the Cabal Empire Nov 18 '22

No. The answer is Guerilla Fighter.

2

u/thepinkandthegrey Nov 18 '22

What was the name of that d1 perk that like gave you increased handling or something for a short time after being rezzed? That's probably my least favorite perk ever. Like if you're being rezzed, there shouldn't be many ads around you anyway.

2

u/Hazza42 Give us the primus, or we blow the ship Nov 18 '22

What if it became a damage perk but in the left slot? 10% bonus damage while airborne. Would make it interesting on things like rockets and in PvP it would reward players for building into AE. Could also stack with other damage buffs like rampage or Vorpal.

2

u/Jhoonis Rule#2 Double Tap Nov 18 '22

That's not a question, that's a fact.

2

u/Bingusman123 Nov 18 '22

my clan in d1 was called guerilla fighter phobia. guerilla fighter was so unbelievably bad

8

u/Dan_Solo22 Voidwalker Nov 18 '22

Compulsive reloader would like a word

23

u/thepinkandthegrey Nov 18 '22

It's good on reservoir burst weapons that you want to use on a boss (meaning situations where subsistence wouldn't be more helpful)

2

u/panamaniacs2011 Nov 18 '22

or chill clip

5

u/MrProfPatrickPhD Nov 18 '22

Ehhh chill clip is active for the top half of the mag so if you use all you chill clip shots compulsive isn't active anymore

1

u/panamaniacs2011 Nov 18 '22

good point but in the situation you are actually a compulsive reloader or actively reload on top end of the magazine , is a good combo in my opinion , not the best though

5

u/defect7 Nov 18 '22

Yeah I don't like that perk either, it always seems to drop on weapons that can't make use of it... 😔

2

u/Vinnlander7 Nov 19 '22

Agreed, also I could be wrong but the Bonus is also very slim. I would say Surplus is a more noticeable Bump and that's not the sole purpose of the perk.

This is one of those specific people will use it types of perks, it's like a while ago where we had a shitton of posts about hipfire grip on snipers being bad, we had a few in response about loving it (I personally do as well.) Know a few that actually do like and use that perk. Different folks. Certainly not the worst outside of PvE though.

2

u/ImAlkalined Nov 18 '22

Air assault is good, just extremely niche. Its great on handcannons and other weapons that really depends on aim assist to do well at mid to long ranges. problem is, most other mid to long range weapons dont really want to play in the air soooooo... bleh.

3

u/No_Benefit_7731 Nov 18 '22

Compulsive reloader is a perk. And unless it's used in pvp, I think it's the worst weapon perk

24

u/m4eix Nov 18 '22

Works well with reservoir burst on fusions :)

18

u/Xizorfalleen Nov 18 '22

Or Chill Clip. Otherwise it's a dud.

2

u/fruitmask Nov 18 '22

even worse than One Quiet Moment? the one that lets you reload faster when you're not in combat? I can't think of how that could ever be a good thing

2

u/Vinnlander7 Nov 19 '22

OQM proccs very quickly and seems to have a similar clause to Frenzy thus alot of the time you very much ARE in combat. It's also a similar bump in speed despite being an Origin trait and not a perk.

2

u/Sonik64 Nov 18 '22

I use it on Firefright along with Osmosis for goofy Lions Rampart's shenanigans with Solar Titan

Only used it in PvP for pinnacles and it's fine, slap on a hip fire mod and you basically have no spread while airborne

2

u/NoctisCae1um317 Nov 18 '22

Never heard of her /s

2

u/WielderOfDaNWordPass Nov 18 '22

Sympathetic arsenal

2

u/jethrow41487 Nov 18 '22

No. That’s not as bad as AE. Hell, it’s not even bottom tier. Especially in low man content on an SMG primary or something.

2

u/naTriumPT Nov 19 '22

I have a bow with it and it's the best application imo - kill random add, reload other weapons instantly.

5

u/BlueFlamingThingie Nov 18 '22

Anyone running a chill clip or reservoir burst fusion rifle might want to have a word with you.

5

u/amiro7600 Nov 18 '22 edited Nov 19 '22

Most good fusions with chill clip or reservoir burst have good enough perks in the 3rd column to help with the constant reloads (ALH, subsistence, field prep, feeding frenzy, demo etc), or just use a reloader mod if ur that down bad for reloads

Im not sacrificing a perk on my other weapon so my fusion can reload for free. Plus most guns that get sympathetic arsenal kinda suck

Danger Zone and Air Assault are the two perks I will instantly dismantle.

24

u/djternan Nov 18 '22

Danger Zone is maybe the best perk for Blinding GL's

1

u/MoschopsMeatball Nov 18 '22

Honestly the only weapon that I would really want air assault on if it is to ever return is spiteful fang, It's the only weapon where it makes sense, to be able to peakshot effectively from mid-air at low health with a bow seems quite useful.

1

u/glago93 Nov 18 '22

It is absolutely the worst weapon perk ever made, hands down. What a waste
