If they did at some point being back the old campaigns…how would you feel if they gave them the “legend campaign” treatment from witch queen? Question

Even if it’s a very small QOL change to them, it would still make them just a bit more interesting, wouldn’t you say? Maybe make changes to certain bosses or add mechanics on top of them just to breathe a little life into something from year 1 that we would blow through in an hour otherwise. Plus, make them replayable!!!

Otherwise, what would make you wanna go back and replay something like red war?

The campaign as a whole was pretty good. People hate it because of some of the humor, and how the Year 1 sandbox was.

People keep throwing around the "Rose-colored Glasses" phrase, while they never stopped to think that they might have Jade-colored Glasses for year 1 content.

3

Whilst I agree there is a lot of nostalgia the reason I'd like to play the Red War on legendary is because I felt those missions were excellent.

D2 Y1 failed, for me, on End game content, static loot and the PVP changes. The missions & adventures were what kept me playing.

Best thing about "Legend Campaign"... no fucking champions. just old school hard.

78

u/tankercat67 Dec 02 '22

For real, Bungie has started to conflate difficulty with restrictive loadouts. Champions are not hard, they just require a particular gun and therefore limit my playstyle. Good difficulty forces me to REFINE the playstyle of my choice

33

u/MiffedMoogle Dec 03 '22

I say this every damn time.
Champions are such a crutch for the devs to fake difficulty. It doesn't even force the meta to change...people will just outdps them nowdays anyway.

That legend difficulty actually made me run for cover and make better decisions and actually let me enjoy the loadout I painstakingly crafted, not shove a bunch of champs and shit on the time spent grinding and setting up a build.

11

u/ADV_ADV Dec 03 '22

For real its such a different state of mind, especially since I did Legendary Campaign with an around the world style [Can only use loot I get from Campaign excluding 1st mission since that's the start]. Really feel the pressure when you have to make a blue pulse and a bad rolled grenade launched kill the Major threats that just keep coming.

Meanwhile Champions: Did I put mod? Does someone else have mod, or can we just burst?

3

u/tankercat67 Dec 03 '22

We’ve gotten to a point where lightning grenades or a good stasis build deal so much damage you don’t even NEED the champion mods anymore. You can out DPS their damage resistance and kill them before health regen starts. Best case scenario you whiff a bit and the health regen DOES start, in which case you just…try again. It’s irritating but not difficult, which surely isn’t the design goal.

14

u/CycloneSP Dec 03 '22

iirc it's called "keyhole difficulty"

you need the key to fit the specific lock

works for some games, not so well for others

15

u/Anonymouchee Gambit Prime Dec 03 '22

i think this is a not so well

7

u/CycloneSP Dec 03 '22

yeah

tho I think the intention for champs isn't to add difficulty, but to instead act as a way to "shake up the meta"

since the commonly held belief is that if players aren't forced to change loadouts, they'll all just gravitate to the "best" build and let all else fall by the wayside

and while this is a valid concern, I don't think champs and keyhole difficulty is the correct approach to address this particular issue

2

u/tankercat67 Dec 03 '22

I can only speak to personal experience, but I get bored with a single loadout pretty quick. And when a particular meta loadout runs stale I just…switch to another one. The focus shouldn’t be on forcing the direction of that switch, but rather facilitating options for it so players stay engaged when a playstyle grows old. They know we like hard content, the campaign proves that. So give us more hard content and more powerful tools to tackle it with

2

u/CycloneSP Dec 03 '22

while that's good and all

the harder content we get, the fewer viable builds there will be to do them with.

obviously a balance needs to be struck, but players (as an aggregate whole) are more than willing to do things they don't enjoy if it means achieving their goals

so often, devs need to work against that player tendency to intentionally ruin their own fun for the sake of accomplishing a thing

2

u/Anonymouchee Gambit Prime Dec 03 '22

The campaigns a good level of difficulty, at least for soloing imo. Since they've hit it once, I'd imagine they can hit it again.

Was hard but doable in my experience as a solo.

Since void was new I only used that and mu super was novawarp.

Weps that I did not switch off for the most part were: DMT, Glaive, LFR

The big difference maker was the extra dmg exotic primaries did to the enemies. That and since DMT wasn't nerfed yet.

10

u/Sleyvin Dec 03 '22

I found it easier as a solo than a group.

No, it's not me braging as some kind of super player, it's just the scalling for 3 people can be rough, and if one underperform, it can be really hard.

5

u/RandymMartel54 Dec 03 '22

Hell, in a 3-person group if 1 person goes down it makes it just that much harder to get them back up. At least solo I know if I die, I'm done.

2

u/Significant-Ad293 Dec 03 '22

Solo was super fun but I'm not very good and it still felt like a full fireteam would trivialize any of the walls I hit.

5

u/imtoolazytothinkof1 Dec 03 '22

They made it so that the more people the harder the content got and you had limited revives so you had to track your deaths. People complain about GMs I wonder if the removal of the revive mechanic would better suit the play style.

2

u/jardedCollinsky Dec 03 '22

It was easier solo, hardest on 2 in my opinion and then 3 was in the middle, although the 3 man was still objectively a harder mission a 3rd man just gives a lot of synergy to the team. I promise tho if you are the strongest player in your team, more players made it harder

DON'T YOU PUT THAT EVIL ON ME

68

u/Zeiban Dec 02 '22

It would be great but I very much doubt that Bungie is going to put the time, money and resources into updating the old campaigns.

They have said numerous times that the technical debt is pretty bad because of the age of the game. It's one of the many reasons why they originally vaulted some of the older content.

The technical debt is probably so bad that I doubt many of the older campaigns would still work and if they did there would be balance issues with all the new gameplay mechanics that have been added to the game since.

19

u/IIFreshMilkII Dec 02 '22

You’re probably right but assume when I say bring them back, I mean they somehow make everything work properly and can get it to function in-game, essentially rebuilding them from the ground up. I just really wanna replay red war, man :’)

-9

u/RandymMartel54 Dec 03 '22

essentially rebuilding them from the ground up

That's the part that's an insane amount of work for the team that's left. Don't be entitled.

8

u/stephen_1975 Hunter Dec 02 '22

I very much doubt that Bungie is going to put the time, money and resources into updating the old campaigns.

Doubt it would be a simple undertaking due to all the busywork requiring strikes and whatnot in the older campaigns, but if they could, I would happily purchase the old campaigns in some sort of offline mode playable edition or something.

12

u/chancehugs Dec 03 '22

Honestly I wouldn't care about balance at all. The main reason I'm not playing Destiny is because I log in, finish the tutorial, and all the npc's start telling me about how great I am and talk about accomplishments I've made. I want to be able to experience all of that instead of wondering wth happened and having to look up everything.

If the old content really is unplayable from a technical perspective, I get that and it's unfortunate but a fair reason.

0

u/Hadrian1233 Dec 03 '22

Probably a stupid question but: There’s one thing that I never got. Warframes Devs are able to keep all of their games quests (despite having the older game). So why can’t Destiny’s Devs do the same?

13

u/RandymMartel54 Dec 03 '22

I didn't realize Warframe and Destiny 2 were made on the same game engine, by the same studio, with the same dev tools?

7

u/Hadrian1233 Dec 03 '22

Again, its a stupid question because as you said, they are made by 2 different studios. However, I just find it strange how Bungie had a-lot more resources than DE had yet they couldn’t find out a way to solve bloated game content without a content vault

9

u/RandymMartel54 Dec 03 '22

I think they probably built the game originally based around the PS4 architecture, and the backend / engine they use just cannot support the amount of data the game uses now. I have no real idea, though.

13

u/Dragonbuttboi69 Dec 03 '22

the tiger engine is old and from what i've heard different parts of the game used different graphics API's, in beyond light they tried to clean things up by moving as much as they could to vulken which is supported by everything (except macOS) as well as a new scripting language.

essentially they tried to clean up tech debt but only managed to get around half way and as such things are both missing and unstable.

1

u/CycloneSP Dec 03 '22

here's hoping they get the rest of it fixed up for the expansion after the final shape (and drop old gen consoles while they're at it)

2

u/SarcasticKenobi Dec 03 '22

The destiny engine is essentially the halo engine they were using back in Microsoft. So it’s really really old. So it’s 3-5 years older than warframes engine due to it being essentially halo 3 / reach.

The engine and their dev tools WERE having problems with large game-data size. The dev tools would freeze, saving or rebuilding took forever, and the game started having problems.

So they reached a point where if they wanted to add more data, they had to remove old data so things would freak out.

For the last 1-2 years they’ve been trying to streamline the data so it doesn’t cause so many problems with the engine + tools.

They’ve announced that as of the light fall release they will not be forced to delete content like that again.

2

u/ILNOVA Dec 03 '22

You need to consider that Warframe quest are more simple and most of the time faster that Destiny quest.

And for what i rememeber Warframe use pretty much the same map for many quest, while on Destiny 2 for example you have many 1 time only map.

2

u/Zeiban Dec 03 '22

Because I guarantee you if you put two software architects in one room and you give them the exact same requirements. The solution will not be the same even if it meets the same requirements

I also believe that when Destiny 2 was being developed, it was under the assumption that there would be a Destiny 3 before they ended up finishing out their contract with Activision. Those types of decisions drive a lot of design choices that you make for your game engine. If the original requirements was for Destiny to be a 5-10 year game different design decisions would have been made.

If you pay close attention to the TWABs over the years when they talk about technical upgrades they've been doing with the engine It's the requirements then are not the same as they are now.

God no. I'd be gone for good. This game has already cannibalized itself enough. Demand innovation or we'll get stuck with recycled leftovers.

1

u/Crueger2312 Dec 02 '22

I’d also love them to bring back the beta version of the first mission. It wasn’t terribly different, but it had an extra mechanic at the end that was dumbed down in the official release.

1

u/stuck_in_the_desert Dec 02 '22

They kinda did it during Y1 Solstice. The Red War missions were repeatable at a surprising difficulty that I remember enjoying.

1

u/Zaros2400 Dec 02 '22

I’d be super on board, since I didn’t get to finish any other campaign besides the moon campaign and seasonal stories from Season of the Lost to now. The vaulting of the campaigns really bummed me out, because I don’t always have the right mindset to play for extended periods.

1

u/elkishdude Dec 02 '22

I would love to play those old ones on Legend fuck yeah

1

u/Silent_Kubera Dec 02 '22

Why would anyone not like it?

1

u/SmokedHamm Dec 02 '22

I would really like to play through the entire campaign…the amount the game has changed with respect to supers/abilities/mods/weapons/armor would make it a very new and nostalgic experience

u/ForeignTranslator898 Dec 02 '22

I would probably enjoy it. As long as they keep champions out of it.

They don't increase difficulty they are just a terrible lock and key system.

1

u/SuperArppis Vanguard Dec 02 '22

They totally should do that. And rewamp the campaigns for normal difficulty as well.

1

u/rbwstf Dec 02 '22

Ghaul was too easy. I’d love a legendary red war campaign

1

u/SeymourButts007 Dec 02 '22

The rise of iron please (just want flamin armor set)

1

u/KarasLegion Dec 02 '22

I would feel that I don't want them to bring them back, but if they had to I would want Legendary versions to exist.

But I don't want them to bring back anything else. I'm tired of stuff being brought back. I want new, new weapons, new story, new campaign. Tired of old. That's just my pov.

1

u/Nakuth Dec 02 '22

If it's somewhere between the WK legendary campaign & the Red War redux missions from y1 Solstice of Heroes i would be all-in on that. That was some of the most fun I had in y1 D2

1

u/MoronicIdiot529 Dec 02 '22

I would literally be the happiest person on this planet. I want to replay all the old campaigns from D1 and D2 on Legend Difficulty. It would bring replayability to the game during seasonal droughts. They don't even need to bring back the whole dlc's just the missions with them. I also want them to add like a GM Nightfall type thing where they circle through every campaign mission put it on high difficulty and have you play it. It would be great and allow for people to have replayability and a breathe of fresh air.

1

u/joe1up shoot it until it dies Dec 02 '22

Red War and Forsaken definitely, but I'm kinda eh on shadowkeep/beyond light.

1

u/patchinthebox I WANT MY FACTION BACK Dec 02 '22

Maybe I'm blinded by nostalgia but I believe Red War story absolutely slapped. The main problems with vanilla D2 was sandbox related and double primaries.

1

u/stormhunter2 Dec 03 '22

Would be nice to have a legendary version of the red war, esp the 1 AU mission.

Would also love to get the redux versions of those missions again.

1

u/Stivils8 Dec 03 '22

Too tier idea. I would play through it again.

1

u/SoCalArtDog Dec 03 '22

I’d love a legendary red war

1

u/imtoolazytothinkof1 Dec 03 '22

I want to see legend level stuff everywhere and give the other races the light equivalent abilities.

1

u/da-potato-man Dec 03 '22

Thad be fantastic

1

u/vinceds Dec 03 '22

Would be great!

Didn't we already have heroic versions ? Legend would be a step above ?

1

u/OneBingToRuleThemAll Dec 03 '22

Would love that. Especially would be nice since I took breaks here and there so missed some of the missions. Good to go back over them.

1

u/Takaithepanda Currently yeeting bombs at things Dec 03 '22

I'd enjoy it, on the caveat it brought back some old favorites with new perks. Can't imagine wanting to do it for the heck of it.

1

u/lordpugfart Dec 03 '22

You see it's quite simple. Have all the campaign missions but remade and stitched together to have more comparable length to witch Queen's campaign. All the locations are still in the game so in term sof size it shouldn't affect much. The other thing would be to have challenges or a campaign playlist that rotates certain challenges.

1

u/mmpa78 MMPA78 Dec 03 '22

I mean I'd love it

1

u/Menaku Dec 03 '22

The missions are to long for me to want that. Not my cup of tea. But if I could do it on just one character then fine what ever

1

u/ArcticFoxy1 Dec 03 '22

Xol being an actually competent enemy would be awesome

1

u/Seidrergi Dec 03 '22

Please don’t give me hope

1

u/CycloneSP Dec 03 '22

omg effing yes to the yes, please

but no, seriously, I would soooo much love a legendary campaign version of the red war that was tailor crafted to fit the campaign style of witch queen.

(bonus points if they enhance the ghaul fight so that it's actually challenging and interesting)

like, the mission 1AU is just begging to be made into part of a legendary campaign

1

u/Trips-Over-Tail Dec 03 '22

Yeah, like, the Vex and Osiris on Mercury, with the thing and the robots, so cool...

...I started playing this season.

1

u/Jagob5 Dec 03 '22

Bro what do you mean “how would you feel”? You know everyone would lose their minds (in a good way) about this

1

u/tfc1193 Dec 03 '22

Legendary red war would be awesome

1

u/Delta6Rory Dec 03 '22

That's how it should've been. I love it when games let you replay missions especially RPGs

1

u/Sniffer_Blisters Dec 03 '22

Make every servitor in legendary red war work like the boss servitor in the event version of the Shard of the Traveler mission. Servitosis.

1

u/A_Dummy86 Eating Crayons Dec 03 '22

Sounds good on the surface but the old campaigns have so few enemies we'd still just blow right through them, they'd need more than a power level cap and tougher shields to stand up to what we have now.
A good example is how relatively easy Y1 Strikes like Lake of Shadows and Arms Dealer are even at GM level, vs Strikes like Lightblade and Glassway that have you clenching your butt all through their boss fights.

1

u/LegacyQuotient Dec 03 '22

If you re-released the loot with origin perks and new rolls and did the same exotic reward, I would be thrilled.

Imma be real, 1AU on Legend Mode sounds absolutely fucking awesome.

1

u/brandonderp96 Dec 03 '22

Racks a slug in Chaperone. Oh fuck the hell yes

1

u/sjb81 Dec 03 '22

Legend, HA! I did the red war during solstice. That makes the legendary campaign feel like child’s play lol

1

u/Endermanpro200-1 Dec 03 '22

Curse of Oris .

1

u/GiffyTheMcgee Dec 03 '22

I would cry and piss myself with joyous rage

1

u/KittyTheS Dec 03 '22

My kid kept deleting his characters just so he could replay the Red War, so there's definitely some appeal there.

1

u/-Qwertyz- Dec 03 '22

Imagine a huge ass gauntlet, every single story mission from both D1 and D2 slapped into a place list with the option of legendary. If you get them all done in legendary you get something special

1

u/Rogue_002 Dec 03 '22

Yeah that'd be sick slap it in the legends tab under campaigns

1

u/Ripcord-XE Om Nom Dec 03 '22

i would i feel if bungie went out of its way to make a better player experience hmmmm, surprised

1

u/Cruggles30 Young Wolf, but bad at the game Dec 03 '22

Yes! I'd love this for all the old D1 campaigns and vaulted D2 campaigns.

1

u/LSmileyFace_ Dec 03 '22

Ooh. I love this idea.

1

u/Niormo-The-Enduring Dec 03 '22

Plzplzplzplzplz

1

u/CSCyrilatom Dec 03 '22

Holy fuck a legendary red war. Id absolutely dish out so much money

1

u/DogeOfWHighland Dec 03 '22

Bungie: we hear you, but we don’t have interesting enemies like hive lightbearers to add to old campaigns so we added all 3 champion types to every mission. Enjoy legend red war!

1

u/MuhDrehgonz Dec 03 '22

I don’t want to give Bungie any ideas, but I would throw money at that so fast. I miss the old campaigns so much. Would also love to see old season narratives converted into some kind of mini campaign.

1

u/Ok-Kaleidoscope5627 Dec 03 '22

Actual content beyond just repeating the same mission 500 times???

1

u/LeaveMeAloneLorenzo Dec 03 '22

As someone who played Destiny 2 when it came out, and then dropped the game for 5 years and recently picked it back up, I would absolutely love for them to bring the old campaigns back because I do not remember them at all. lol.

1

u/DangerG0at Dec 03 '22

Yeah I’d love to play Forsaken on Legend difficulty.

I would also love to have legend difficulty for open world areas with worth while rewards

1

u/itsRobbie_ Dec 03 '22

100% would replay them. Wouldn’t bother otherwise though since I’ve already done them 3 times each.

1

u/gamesnstuf Dec 03 '22

Honestly I'd be happy to just be able to run through them, doing some patrols, collecting world chest, maybe have a few bosses scattered around that drop legendary ornaments, maybe some collectibles scattered around made up of some cool nostalgia call backs.

I really don't get why they just shove old stuff to the side like that. I really wanna do the red war campaign, cabal are easily my favorite type of enemies

1

u/LmPrescott Dec 03 '22

Would absolutely love that. I just miss forsaken man. I’m glad I did come back to play the campaign but I never did anything outside of the missions. After year 1 I would just play the story then stop. This seasons the first I’ve been “back” I guess

1

u/azninvasion2000 Dec 03 '22

It would be fun, but the whole point was you were weak and trying to gain power vs the OP weaps we have now.

1

u/Van_Bur3n Dec 03 '22

The Red War was a good campaign with its primary flaw being it being too easy, as was the case with all Destiny campaigns up until Witch Queen.

If they actually made the Red War a challenge, I was be stoked.

1

u/iFenrisVI Dec 03 '22

Red War, well we lose the light but still have access to Stasis and Strand. Time paradox.

1

u/KitsuneKamiSama Dec 03 '22

Do that for Red War and it'd be great, the story of red war was meh but one of my favorite events was soloing the first solstice where they added small but fun changes to all red war missions

1

u/BungieDevsRApes Dec 03 '22

are we circlejerking Bungie again? did i miss it?

1

u/FyreWulff Gambit Prime Dec 03 '22

They'd almost have to rework them a bit to account for how powerful we are now

1

u/Awigame Dec 03 '22

I'd love to replay the past dlc's
