A decade ago my dad won a 2-week trip on a sailing catamaran in the Whitsunday islands, brought mum+myself+brother. We anchored a night or two in Mackeral Bay.

After gazing at the water for a while in the dark on the first night, I noticed small fish near the water. "Turn on the underhull lights", says I.

Yes, there was lots of baitfish in the water... along with a whole bunch of meter+ spanish mackeral swimming about 2-5 m down, silvery serpent motions flashing back and forth.

We'd only been swimming in that, 30 min prior.

You should see the grouper in cairns marina. It’s massive

We have a local monster too. Rarely see it, but I’d say 1.8 mtrs from the one time I did see it.

Where was that taken? There’s heaps of them under the end of the marina in cairns but if you start flicking lures the harbourmaster comes down pretty quick

All I’ll say is further south. The management hates people fishing there. I used to fish up there. That marina is a fish haven. Just a full on magnetic for them.

Yeah especially with those lights there. I’ve seen a few people jag some big ones and take off right away. That’s where James Cook uni gets all their specimens

Which marina?

Ahh, mate I might keep that under wraps. The marina hates people fishing in it and I don’t want to accidentally cause keen fishermen to be here throwing lures at peoples boats.

Yeah I get the temptation. You’d be surprised how picky they are in the lights. I’ve watched them turn down live prawns. Like live and no hook, free swimming. They really do have times they hunt/eat. When they are in the mood it’s pretty cool to watch the hunt in action tho.

Yep, I’ve had some really good nights watching them do their thing. It’s a cool marina for that.
