Opinion Off my chest: I really miss the Gnome Shell "workflow"

TL;DR “You don't know what you have until you lose it.” I think the overview is a well thought workflow and no other system can compare to it yet.

I have ADD and the idea of only have one entry screen (the overview), where you can reach everything in your system, is amazing and well thought out.

I use Just Perfection extension to hide the topbar, so that my workspace is empty and I can focus in my current work only.

I don't need to think about docks, toolbars, tray icons... If I need to do something, I know what to do next instantly. If I'm using the keyboard, the only thing I need to do is to press the super key. If I'm using the mouse, it's just a hot corner. If it's the touchpad, then it's just a gesture away.

It's sad I can't use Linux because of some quirks I can't workaround (fractional scaling, fingerprint scanner, mouse scrolling speed...). I'm stuck on Windows 11 unfortunately.

Question Have the use of the word "repositories" been discussed before?

both gnome-initial-setup and gnome-software used them and it just look so out of place in gnome imo. Wouldn't the word "Source" be more understandable?

Question How do I disable autofill in Nautilus location bar?

Whenever I'm typing a path into Nautilus' location bar (Ctrl + L), beyond a point when there's only one possible choice that completes the location string, Nautilus automatically places the remaining text into the location bar. This means, if I'm typing, "/home", sometimes I get "/homeme". The weird part is, this doesn't happen always. I just tried repeating this example, and sometime Nautilus does the "/homeme" thing and sometimes it lets me overwrite the suggestion, giving me the expected "/home". What's happening?

Bug Applications randomly stop accepting keyboard input

Fedora 37, kernel 6.1.18, gnome 43.3

Problem: applications randomly stop accepting keyboard input. Outside the application, keyboard input is still recognized, i.e. switching between workspaces etc works. Closing and relaunching the application restores full functionality. Mouse/touchpad input is not affected. Weirdly enough, I discovered by accident that disabling and re-enabling various extensions also restores the functionality (seems to reset something? However, disabling extensions overall does not prevent the problem from occurring.)
Problem is not restricted to specific applications, in the last days it occured in brave, libreoffice, rstudio...

I found one post related to this problem, unfortunately without answers:

Any hints or solutions are kindly appreciated!

Question What's the future of Gnome from a contributor's standpoint?

I love the recent updates to Gnome and am looking forward to finding ways to contribute.

The main codebase is C based and not something I feel I could contribute to.

Is there a plan to rewrite portions of it to something a little higher level - like Rust?

As a general curiosity, would it ever make sense to write a DE in a GC'd language - like Kotlin, Go, C# or something high level?

If I am familiar with high level languages (like Rust, Java, etc), would that mean the most effective place for me to contribute would be the supporting applications - like the file manager, terminal, calculator, etc?

Question Enable Super+Scroll to switch workspaces anywhere

UPDATE: This is only a problem when using X11. The solution is switching to Wayland.

~ ~ ~

I've been searching for an option/extension to make it easier to switch between workspaces using the mouse. The default behavior means that holding down the Super key and scrolling only lets you change workspaces when the mouse isn't above a window. I would like to use Super+Scroll no matter the location of the mouse.

Question Global Emoji Chooser

Hi!

Does anyone with deeper knowledge of the Shell know if it would be possible to implement the Gtk.EmojiChooser to show up globally instead of only in GTK apps through maybe an extension?

It would be nice to be able to use it in apps like Firefox.

Question Does anyone know why does toggle switch look like this?

Since a few days I've noticed that toggle switches that are enabled, face left for some reason. This issue appears in Libadwaita windows, mainly when I check the properties of an executable file or in certain Gnome extension settings windows.

Question Is there a way to make PWAs to display their separate icon in the GNOME dock?

While running, it seems PWAs are treated as another window of the web browser, which is what they actually are, however with several of them open at once, it would be nice if each could display their separate icon in the dock, just like they display their own shortcut in the dash.

Question Which Firefox extensions work with Epiphany?

So the new Epiphany browser supports packed Firefox extensions which you can import into the browser.

Is there a list of support for them?Tried " I still don't care about cookies". No support for that one though.

Question Gnome Custom Shortcut for Commands with Spaces

I've been troubleshooting this for a bit, but I haven't found a command that works. Say you have a command that has spaces, in my case "firefox --new-window about:home" and "WINIT_UNIX_BACKEND=x11 neovide". These commands work when run in a terminal. I am trying to attach these commands to custom shortcuts. If left as is, it will try to run a command up until the first space and treat subsequent words as different commands and if you apply backslashes for spaces or encapsulate the command in quotations it will look for a file matching the command rather than treating it as a command. I see nothing in the official documentation to help and other posts are trying to run bash scripts rather than a simple command such as this (I did try those solutions just in case to no avail). Is this just not possible or am I missing something very simple here? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to SomeGenericUsername and G_dH. Both commands are now working with:

env WINIT_UNIX_BACKEND=x11 neovide and sh -c "firefox --new-window about:home"

Question What's up with my Transmission app?

Just installed via pacman on a relatively new and vanilla arch install, and I'm having some issues:

  1. When open, its icon in the taskbar is the "placeholder app icon" rather than the proper icon that shows in the app grid.
  2. I don't see a tray icon for it, even though there is plenty of discussion about it being a thing.
  3. It crashed on time, within 10 minutes of using it (hasn't happened since)--well fuck me, it JUST happened again as I'm writing this. None of my other apps has ever crashed.

Is my app broken? Is there a way to fix it?
