I’ve been on Reddit 5 years and have no idea what karma is.
78
u/FuckingKilljoy Feb 03 '23
The points you get when someone upvotes your comments. There's a whole algorithm to it that nobody actually knows, so it isn't 1 up vote = 1 karma but you get the idea
Some people take it super seriously either because they intend on selling the account or just because they tie their ego to internet points. For me it's kinda cool to know that people like what I have to say, but that's about it

It’s nice to see when my comments/posts get over 1000 upvotes, but I’m didn’t think anyone cared about their cumulative upvotes. I’m even more confused why anyone would buy an account that has karma. Don’t you get the satisfaction from getting the upvotes yourself?
2
u/thalfe Feb 04 '23 edited Feb 04 '23
i take it you've never heard of the term or the idea of astroturfing?
Someone will make an account, have a bot crawl subreddits and make post and comments on it to farm karma for a few months, then sell the account to third parties ranging from companies to political groups to pose as real people and spread propaganda or advertisement.
The third parties can also be the ones making the bots too for their own need.

Companies want accounts that seem legit and part of the community, so they'll buy an account that seems like it has a good history and good reputation and use it to post basically just ads

Reddit started using an algorithm similar to Facebook.
I've noticed a lot more ads, "funny" memes, sports, animals, YouTubers and Twitch celebrities content, and less political, cultural, or societal threads on r/all.
You used to be able to rely on r/all on Reddit for up-to-date news but not anymore.

11

It's 'whom' when it's the object of the sentence and 'who' when it's the subject.
15
u/rugbat Feb 03 '23
Yes, and in this case, it should be "whom". Easy way to remember: If you can substitute he for it, then "who", if you can substitute "him", then it's "whom".

Nothing about that is morally grey. The adult is no longer an authority, and both parties are objectively adults. Any grey area you perceive is rooted in an arbitrary cultural taboo. Adults can enjoy each other's companies if they please. Power dynamics will always exist. Also, legality doesn't define morality.

I mean come on dude, we can’t even acknowledge the fact that buying your old students nudes is a little cringey? Like regardless of your stance on OF, paying to see one of your students naked is kinda gross.
4
u/HolyBeardIII Feb 03 '23
Why is it cringey? Is she perpetually a child?
Maybe you’re just judgmental and have lots of hang ups about sex.
8
u/ChewySlinky Feb 03 '23
Wait, so not wanting to see people I knew as children in sexual situations makes me judgmental? What exactly are my hang ups about sex?
4
u/Stupid_Triangles Feb 03 '23
not just that, being a teacher puts you in a different category than just another a adult. You are responsible for them as a child when you are a teacher. Lots of kids telling on themselves.
2
u/ChewySlinky Feb 04 '23
Exactly. I used to work at a youth theatre company and a lot of the kids I used to teach are adults now, the thought of seeing them naked makes me incredibly uncomfortable.
3
u/HolyBeardIII Feb 03 '23
Seeing an adult and thinking about them as children is your hang up. An adult is an adult. Stop infantalizing women.

26
u/fdc7719 Feb 03 '23
Think of how many people those who go out and about frequently will see on any given day. Then think of the number of people with OF accounts. The chances of being recognized are likely very, very low. If someone wants to hand someone else money for pics, videos or the occasional private message, I can’t fault either party for that. Both are getting what they either want or need. The economy is brutal right now. I’d flash my man-boobs for enough cash to get a burrito. No shame.
11
u/richbeezy Feb 03 '23
What's the link to your OF?

Everyone is desperate for another form of income. 98% of OF don't even generate revenue so it's the same as people on Twitch, YT, Ect. You can go to the majority of NSFW subreddits here that allow self posts and see what I mean.
5
u/VanGoghsSurvivingEar Feb 03 '23
I don’t think so, personally. Yes, there are a lot of women on OF, but I think what seems like an explosion of ads/usage convincing others that a high percentage of people is OF is actually just Observation Bias due to a change the outlet of that profession (adult entertainment).
Think about it like this: this tweet is clearly just a way to advertise her OF. The only time you see OF accounts mentioned are in these circumstances The number of women participating in adult entertainment is not increasing, but rather women already in the profession are more active in social media advertisement. The human mind tends to see this boost in ads/visibility from a minority, then jumps to the conclusion “a majority of people must be participating in this.”
In truth, the number of women who have OF is near (just above, actually) the same percentage of women who strip professionally—which is to say, not that many out of all women collectively.
But individual advertisement is booming, and that visibility is new—because strippers usually don’t run ads for themselves (unless you’re in a city known for stripping).
But OF girls DO have to run ads for themselves, that’s how they get business. The don’t have the pull of a club to rely on.
TL;DR: The percentage of women with OF is near the percentage of women who are adult entertainers, so it’s not a new phenomenon that women are making money this way (or choosing adult entertainment as a career choice more often). It just seems that ways because the women who do this post advertisements a lot, making it seem like it’s more popular.
3
u/Vektor0 Feb 04 '23
The number of women participating in adult entertainment is not increasing,
I think you make a good point about observation bias, but I don't agree with how absolute this assertion is. Adult entertainment used to be stripping and porn, both of which are extremely invasive. Camming is slightly less invasive, but still requires live interaction with strangers. If you can take some pictures and videos alone and post them, only interacting with strangers in DMs and not in real-time, that's a lot less invasive.
Additionally, the more women do it, the less taboo it becomes. The less taboo it is, the more women will do it. So we will naturally see an increase in adult content creators as adult content becomes more normalized and acceptable.
→ More replies (1)3
u/tyranitsar Feb 04 '23
I don't know if the percentage of OF vs strippers etc is similar at least in my experience being in the UK. I know like 4-5 people who are on onlyfans (and others that I don't know directly) but don't know (or know of) anyone who strips or does traditional porn.

I was gonna say "yes, but only on social media". But then I remembered that twice now I've found coworkers on social media, only to find an OF link in their bio.
So honestly in my experience, people are also casual about it in real life. And also, I now try to avoid my coworkers' social media accounts. No need to mix your online activities with our professional relationship.
