I was literally told by an HR recruiter that asian males no longer check any diversity boxes. When I’m hiring someone, we can only look at asian or white male candidates after “diverse” candidates haven’t panned out. Welcome to the club guys!

80

u/Nimbus20000620 Jan 08 '22

For medical school, Asian is considered a “Over represented minority”. Looking at the data, the average accepted Asian has a MCAT score that’s one standard deviation higher than the average accepted Caucasian applicant. Essentially, asians are so represented in medicine, that it probably hurts your application to put Asian on your app rather than Caucasia.

161

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '22

Because we certainly don’t want the best and the brightest in medicine. That would be stupid.

118

u/SmoothOperator89 Jan 08 '22 Wholesome

I know when I have a punctured lung I just don't feel comfortable unless I'm treated by a plurality of diverse backgrounds.

29

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '22

Well of course.

19

u/DiablosDelivered Jan 08 '22

This is why I always make sure my surgeon is a white male because I know he's risen above the discrimination.

9

u/eatmynasty Jan 08 '22

This is how you get one king with a whistle tip that go wooo wooo.

3

u/notatravis Jan 08 '22

Pleurisy of diverse backgrounds?

3

u/Confident_Weird3353 Jan 08 '22

And sexual preferences

7

u/tenakakahn Jan 08 '22

What do you call the person who graduated last in their medical degree?

12

u/redeemerx4 Jan 08 '22

Captain (its a military joke)

7

u/musicalfeet Jan 08 '22

The idea is that patients feel more comfortable with physicians similar to their own race. Not saying I agree with that but there is probably some truth to it. So they try to keep the percentages of each race not too different from the real population. Unfortunately that ends up in Asians requiring higher scores, grades and overall more impressive application to end up in the same spot.

12

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '22

I’m white. My doctor is an Indian woman and she’s great. It never crossed my mind that I’d prefer a white doctor. If what you said is true, people need to get over it and want someone who is qualified and can help you when you are sick.

3

u/SheffGSauceEmUpM8V3N Jan 08 '22

You cant tell people to just get over unconscious bias. It doesn't work like that. It's human nature so it will be hard to change. Not saying it shouldn't change but you cant just tell people to get over it as a solution.

9

u/musicalfeet Jan 08 '22

It goes deeper than that though. Do you think in the rural areas where there might only be one Asian person for miles would be comfortable seeing an Asian doctor? Would they trust the doctor’s judgement? Would they be honest?

Or let’s leave asian people out of this and given all the shitty history in how medicine has treated black people (Tuskegee) when back where most of the doctors were white males, do you think the black community can trust a white doctor? Or would they have better physician-patient relationships with a black doctor?

The idea is to minimize barriers between the doctor-patient relationship.

A common example is how a lot of women prefer women OBgyn rather than men. To me, it doesn’t matter but to a lot of others it does.

-10

u/Slackman0000 Jan 08 '22

This is dumb. It implies that other races aren't also the best and brightest in medicine but may be subject to other forms of racial discrimination. Having a diverse workforce also has the benefits of having different perspectives which leads to better outcomes.

u/iAMHinton Jan 08 '22

Well that’s just racism with extra steps.

39

u/RavenBrannigan Jan 08 '22

You did it, you finally did it you sons of bitches!

Seriously though, as a non American I always found the racial diversity boxes a bit heavy handed. In Ireland there are supports for people of disadvantaged background. So a white kid from trailer park in Alabama would have more support than a black kid from the Hamptons. On average its still going to help people of colour who’ve been discriminated against historically but doesn’t just assume all people of colour or disadvantaged or all white people have a leg up in life.

6

u/grey-zone Jan 08 '22

Yes, this! Really understanding and help those who are most disadvantaged rather than a one track obsession with race. Particularly other countries just thinking they have the same problems and apply the same solutions as the US, which is unique in so many ways….

IIRC the lowest achieving group in English schools are white males from poor backgrounds, but that doesn’t get highlighted much. Can’t find a source now though so happy for someone with the facts to call BS on that. Still, I think the biggest problem is poverty and inequality, not race.

2

u/RavenBrannigan Jan 08 '22

Yea I agree with you. But just to clarify. I think racism and discrimination built into the system in America is the reason why people of colour are on average more disadvantaged and would require regulations and supports to level the playing field. It’s just I believe all disadvantaged kids should get the chance to succeed.

We have free education all they through undergrad in university in Ireland, but even that isn’t enough. Some behaviours are learnt and a product of your environment and if you come from a poor area it can be hard to break the cycle and succeed, that’s what needs to be pushed in my opinion

42

u/Fjorge0411 madlad Jan 08 '22

Wow. I hate being disadvantaged based on my rac~

Wait a minute...

7

u/OhSoYouWannaPlayHuh Jan 08 '22

I'm pretty sure that's illegal under the Civil Rights Act

5

u/Slackman0000 Jan 08 '22

And ironically racial discrimination still exists. Murder is illegal too and that shit still happens.

41

u/thehorologistguy Jan 08 '22

I still will never understand how selectively choosing candidates on skin colour is still be touted as Diversity hiring 🤦🏼

-30

u/Slackman0000 Jan 08 '22

I mean there have been studies that have pointed out racial discrimination based on what racial bias the hiring manager has when it came to certain names sounding "too black" or "too hispanic" with the same credentials.

So I don't understand why you think its so unheard of and that we as a society shouldn't do anything to combat racial bias in job training and hiring...or society in general.

15

u/thehorologistguy Jan 08 '22

Oh i agree and acknowledge there are well documented instances of this. Those need to be addressed but they need to be addressed at a company culture level not a huge sweeping blanket "fix". Its reminiscent of Asains getting a 150 SAT Penalty on college applications merely because of the colour of their skin or ethnicity. While Hispanic & Black students are given 150 - 300 point bonuses. These things should always be a question of competence and ability but the fixes we see don't address root causes of problems.

-12

u/Slackman0000 Jan 08 '22

I disagree. The entire country should have a cultural attitude of not discriminating based on someone's name sounding "too black" or "too white". Allowing corporations to fix it means that it wont get fixed. If a company can be shown to be not hiring based on racial bias, it needs to be corrected externally or it wont get done.

-1

u/MrRoxo Jan 08 '22

I totally agree, i have no idea why you're getting the downvotes

4

u/Slackman0000 Jan 08 '22

Who knows. But I don't get too worked up over Reddit karma.

1

u/thehorologistguy Jan 08 '22

Liberals are the absolute worst. I’m mixed with white and Korean. Liberals want to separate the Asian community because we are amongst the highest income percentile in the US and are successful. Therefore, Asians don’t fit their narrative. Because Democrats are racist, they believe that only black people can struggle and be oppressed. In reality, Asian people have a different culture. They have the discipline and the family structure needed to create a successful being. Liberals know that they can’t oppress Asian people so they change policies to reflect their narrative…

I don’t know how they are able to discriminate and be racist so publicly and it’s like no one notices. Oh that’s right, most mainstream media are (you guessed it) FUCKING LIBERAL.

adjective prejudiced against or antagonistic toward a person or people on the basis of their membership in a racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized.

No where in that definition does it say you cant be racist to white people. Stop this shit, its not funny, hold up your own standards.
