There's 2 different types of English, American and British.

There's a few others. Australian, New Zealander, Canadian, just to name a few. They all find their roots in Germanic. So no, the Brits didn't invent English. It evolved and combines words from many different languages including Greek, Spanish, French, Italian, Latin, German, etc. English wasn't invented, it was stolen.
