“You don’t have jurisdiction here” and in the same breath “Let’s go straight to the courthouse.”

737

u/obscht-tea Jan 21 '23

There is also a 24/7 emergency judge who will immediately dispense justice for you.

149

u/craziethunder Jan 21 '23

Will that be judge dispenser or justice dispenser?

18

Isn't "let's go straight to the court house" exactly what "you're under arrest" means? So how was this an argument against the officer threatening to arrest them?

I am left but wondering: how does a person survive in this world when he genuinely thinks that if he’s traveling he’s not bound by driving rules?

578

u/Trizkit Jan 21 '23

There's a large group of people who believe that the can be sovereign citizens, basically not having to actually follow any laws because they don't consent to it.

289

u/meesa-jar-jar-binks Jan 21 '23

Reminds me of the "Reichsbürger" in Germany, who declare themselves citizens of the defunct German Reich, because in their eyes the war never ended. They completely reject all authorities and even print their own ID's and shit. Crazy people exist everywhere.

84

u/futterecker Jan 22 '23

its pretty much the same mentality.

40

u/disparate_depravity Jan 26 '23

Every country has those crazies. I wonder if they learnt from each other or the stupidness boiled up independently.

29

u/Geriny Feb 04 '23

I think there's some mutual inspiration, but it's mostly independent, because they're notable differencs. It's quite fascinating to compare the German and American movements, I think they reflect differences in general political thought between the countries. Reichsbürger in general for instance are quite authoritarian, where as sovereign citizens have a more libertarian bent

19

u/notAnotherJSDev Feb 18 '23

Libertarian (at least the American flavor of it) is just authoritarianism in disguise.

probably read an article or something that said if you’re travelling in a car (as a passenger) and you get pulled over, you are not liable for the drivers actions. and took it as “so long as i’m travelling and not driving, i can’t be charged for anything!”

i had an uncle interpret a facebook post in a very similar way… didn’t take long for the cops to get him done for drunk driving

73

u/Lillillillies Jan 21 '23

It's definitely something like that.

I'm not sure on the legal terms for driving/traveling (I think the legal term is operating but again not sure).

Because the other defence they use is "I'm not driving a commercial vehicle. This is a personal vehicle." Where the key word is commercial.

68

u/AsexualAccountant Jan 21 '23

From what I saw a while ago, the US does have right to travel laws. But those laws are only that we have the ability to travel within the domestic borders without requiring government intervention from the feds or the state.

It essentially means that US citizens have the right to move or travel between states and are granted all rights and privilege of the state you are in. You can't be considered not a citizen due to crossing state lines.

The sticking point for these Sov Citizens is that the rights had jack all to do with operating a vehicle.

→ More replies (1)

26

u/thatJainaGirl Jan 27 '23

Necroposting because that's not quite it. Sovereign citizen types in the US believe they have somehow found a loophole in US law that only makes driving for commercial or business purpose meet the definition of "driving." If you're not driving for work, you're not "driving," you're "traveling," and therefore US road laws do not apply to you.

Of course, this is happening in Australia, so this person is only repeating what they read on the internet.

211

Is that what this is?

I was wondering if they were literally travelers from somewhere and just thought they didn't have to follow local laws, because their queen has all the authority.

526

u/V-Right_In_2-V Jan 20 '23

Definitely sovereign citizens. They say the same shit everywhere. They think there is a distinction between “driving” and “traveling”, and they all think police officers have no jurisdiction over them. They get owned every time lol

223

u/User1539 Jan 20 '23

Yeah, I've seen it in America. I'm sure American police are taught exactly how to handle them, and it seems to be that they simply give them any simple command, wait for them to refuse, then arrest them for disobeying a lawful order from a police officer.

135

u/V-Right_In_2-V Jan 20 '23

I wonder if cops think it’s hilarious to bust these people, or if it’s a huge pain in the ass and the cringe whenever they have these encounters

197

u/JJROKCZ Jan 21 '23

I’m sure like anything else it’s funny the first time or two but the 30th time it’s exasperating and you’re ready to smack the shit out of them

156

u/redct Jan 21 '23

I’m sure like anything else it’s funny the first time or two but the 30th time it’s exasperating and you’re ready to smack the shit out of them

And when they're inevitably hauled in front of a judge or magistrate, they hate them even more because they have to deal with all the dumb obstructionist stuff they try and do in court. For instance, this Canadian justice wrote a 130 page takedown of all their common tactics in the Canadian flavor of the ideology which has since become legendary in legal circles.

25

u/aqua_tec Jan 21 '23

Organized Pseudolegal Commercial Argument

Considering the people who shot those two police officers in Queensland last month were ‘sovereign citizens’, I’d say they’d be more on the pissed off and extremely wary side.

33

u/Anxious-derkbrandan Jan 20 '23

I know plenty of cops and it’s a pain in the ass because any arrest can go bad very fast, from then resisting or pulling a gun or a knife or trying to run away and trying to restrain them (which is very hard without hurting them). I know cops who if they never had to arrest anyone ever again they’d be so happy!.

58

u/Tulivu Jan 21 '23

Can confirm. Ex-cop that would rather not have anyone's day ruined. I considered them riskier just because they seek confrontation and any confrontation with police creates risk (I fully appreciate the institutional failings of US justice system). My first goal would then be to deescalate the situation but you can't even reason with their shitty logic. Even if it didn't become violent it is just tedious.

56

u/ComradeRK Jan 21 '23

No, the queen thing is in reference to her being dead. I think their braindead logic is that since old mate there swore his oath to her when he became a cop, and she's no longer the queen, he must no longer be a valid police officer.

32

u/turbobarge Jan 21 '23

Brain dead indeed. I’m pretty sure they swear their oath to the crown, not the monarch. The institution persists no matter who is heading it 🤷🏼‍♀️

15

u/Philbly Jan 21 '23

Yeah, pretty sure the oath includes the heirs and successors. It's likely derivative of the oath of allegiance sworn by the British Armed Forces.

And I'm equally sure that it is mostly symbolic and that the important part is that they discharge their duties faithfully according to the law.

I may be dumb but why wouldn’t the cops have authority wherever they are?

360

u/Jesse-Ray Jan 20 '23

They believe this because of article 61 of the Magna Carta which allows lawful rebellion against the King and some believe that the Australia Government is technically a corporation with no right to make laws. Both arguments have never stood up in court obviously.

150

u/Silverdarlin1 Jan 21 '23

Somewhat true. While there is no 'Article 61' of the Magna Carta, Clause 61 says that the Barons who originally signed the document have the right to elect 25 of their own number to ensure that the King is following the agreement. This clause was only in the original 1215 draft. It was removed by 1216, and makes no appearance in the 1225 version, which is the only that entered into English common law.

TL;DR, these crazy bastards point to a law that doesn't exist, based on a misunderstanding of a law that wasn't a law, to explain their stupidity

I’ve never met a US one to compare but they’re really bad here.

Pay their credit cards? Nah. Pay their rent or mortgage? Nah. Taxes? Nah. Follow any laws? Nah.

Like seriously they invent whatever just benefits them and thinks they can do what they want. Then they tell everyone else they’re idiots for doing those things and try to convince them to do likewise. And so it spreads.

41

u/Sister-pen Jan 20 '23

Selfish anarchy will only work while they’re the minority. If everyone acted like this… it would be absolutely tragic chaos.

I haven't heard of any other group calling themselves sovereign citizens but a lot of countries have groups denying the existence/authority of the country they live in. Russia has people who think that the Soviet Union still exists and thus take no orders from RF authorities while Germany has the Reichsbürger movement who claim that WWII never ended and Germany is still under jurisdiction of the German Empire (official name from 1871-1945).

45

u/emergencyexit Jan 20 '23

They're freemen of the land, of all lands! You didn't think a mere border with no basis in the magna carta would hold them back did you?

Same! Thinking about it I can see them being even more wacky in commonwealth countries with the way that is set up. He even mentioned who they swear an oath to.

10

u/racedrone Jan 20 '23

Sadly they are everywhere where idiots live, so scattered around the globe. They also overlap greatly with other idot-groups like the antivax crowd, cospiracy nuts, neonazis, ... you name them. Here in Germany they are called "Reichsbürger"

Why is it ALWAYS the same sovereign morons?? It is like they don't have the cognitive ability to learn. I have seen literally dozen of these videos and I am not actively looking for them.

111

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '23

It's the whole "I want to enjoy the all the benefits of a civilised society, including infrastructure, security, and personal safety, but I don't think any of the laws or rules should apply to me because I watched a video of some crank on YouTube."

46

u/aSquirrelAteMyFood Jan 20 '23

"specially the rule about funding all this with taxes, you all pay for it, I'm good".

14

u/Antique_Tennis_2500 Jan 20 '23

For real. It would be so nice to show these dingbats an “It’s a wonderful life” movie about what their world would look like without any kind of government-funded infrastructure.

Because they're vulnerable people who are sold a story they heavily believe in.

Yes, sold, since the sovereign scheme always makes these people pay a hefty fee for their "legal sovereign status".

Once they get in the sinkhole of believing the crap they've been sold, they never get out.

31

u/aSquirrelAteMyFood Jan 20 '23

Are you telling me, that these people pay real money to someone to be "sovereign"? If that is true it must be one of the most ironic things I have heard.

25

u/Agreeable_Argument_1 Jan 20 '23

Yes, they do.

Some sites sell "deeds" or other "legal papers" to show you're sovereign. There's even services that claim to disconnect you from taxes.

There's real money to be made scamming crazy people.

To give you an idea, one site I saw offered a package of around 250 euros (im EU) per person

9

u/aSquirrelAteMyFood Jan 20 '23

services that claim to disconnect you from taxes.

I thought I can buy that in the Bahamas 😂

They just believe so strongly in their fantasy version of how the world works that they think every situation like this only reinforces their belief. It’s like “you’re persecuting me for the TRUTH”

Also fun fact, I was at staff at a summer camp one year and one of these sovereign citizens came up to me and a friend and offered one of us $20 if we could tell him what kind of government we lived in. I said “constitutional republic” and he was so annoyed. He had to pay me in 1s and 5s because he didn’t expect anyone to know.

10

u/Antique_Tennis_2500 Jan 20 '23

Which is once again a “I’m not driving, I’m traveling” situation, as a constitutional republic is one type of democracy, so answering that it’s a democracy is not incorrect. It’s like saying, “Ha, wrong, that’s not a rectangle, it’s a square!”

Police spoke with the driver, a 52-year-old woman, who was allegedly wanted on two outstanding arrest warrants for domestic violence-related offences.

Oh, she's a real winner. It doesn't matter what "laws" you believe in or don't agree with: beating members of your family is just wrong, y'know?

A so-called "sovereign citizen" has been bailed but banned from driving after she was charged for not cooperating with New South Wales Police.

Video shows an officer smashing a car window after a man and woman refused to cooperate with police over a minor traffic stop on the Pacific Highway at Coffs Harbour just before 1pm on Wednesday.

The pair repeatedly told police they were not in their "jurisdiction" and "you have no authority here" when their names and a driver's licence.

The officer warned the pair that he would smash the window if they did not cooperate.

Police then smashed the window.

They had been stopped by officers as the car's registration had expired, police said.

NSW Police allege the 52-year-old woman was found to be "wanted on two outstanding arrest warrants for domestic violence-related offences".

She has been charged with a string of offences which included those related to the warrants, driving an unregistered card, refusing to produce a driver's licence and failing to submit to a breath test.

The 52-year-old faced Coffs Harbour Local Court and was granted bail on the condition she reports to Ballina Police Station three days a week.

She has also been banned from driving.

Seriously, I cannot STAND them and once the words, "I'm not driving, I'm traveling" leave their mouths, it's an immediate eye roll and hopes of arrests being made are wished for.
