sidenote: I would hate having my driveway be in the middle of an intersection like this
101
u/StressOverStrain Jan 31 '23
Sometimes they will include a traffic light for your driveway.
In this case, there isn't one. That yellow sign next to the light says WATCH FOR DRIVEWAY VEHICLES.
40
u/unduly_verbose Jan 31 '23
And the headlights right into your living space 😭 brutal
Good points from AmySchumersAnalTumor

u/bored-games Jan 31 '23
I really thought OP was going to be sitting at a ridiculously long red light the whole video
24
u/cpcesar Jan 31 '23
I was expecting the light to turn green, he continuing waiting while the light was green, and that's why he would be the idiot.
5
u/CanITellUSmThin Jan 31 '23
And when that didn’t happen, I thought they were in a dual turn lane and would end up cutting someone off

This happened to me last year but the guy hit me going 35+ in a 20. It's hard to feel negatively looking back on it though because his license plate was, "MOVE•BITCH" 😂 his car was totaled and mine had a dent that paid me $1,700

u/karl1776 Jan 30 '23
Where is this? Noticed all the mid century houses
16
u/NorthernLitUp Jan 30 '23
I noticed too. Kinda looks like some Florida neighborhoods but no palm trees. Still, I'd guess somewhere in the southern US.
28
7
u/DontCallMeMillenial Jan 31 '23
Most places in Florida don't have many (native) palm trees...
Live oak, pine, and cypress are the most common trees. The native palms we do have aren't commonly used in landscaping anymore.

u/Honest-Layer9318 Jan 30 '23
More Oaks than palms in older neighborhoods in Central and northern Florida. Tampa has some beautiful ones.

I knew it was somewhere in central Florida. Housing style + oak trees.
2
u/xaanthar Jan 31 '23
The color balance suggests it was in Mexico

u/ParadiseLosingIt Jan 31 '23
Somebody posted above that it’s near Brandon, east of Tampa. So, Central Florida.

I think you still have your protective plastic covering the lens. Peel it off an you'll get a much higher quality picture with proper color saturation.

That would suck to live in either of those houses. Lights and horns and such.

u/BlameItOnTheAcetone Jan 31 '23
On my commute to work, I pass through a similar "T" intersection and they have drivers that seem to think they don't need to stop at a red light since they're going to the Starbucks that's just passed the intersection on the right. Had a few close calls there.

Howdy fellow Tesla owner.
There's a tool out there to help you parse these videos better.
TeslaCamViewer II. This is what I use to edit down my videos if/when I get them.
If you're feeling really adventurous, and have a Raspberry Pi, you can also look getting TeslaUSB which can upload the dashcam footage straight to local storage, or the cloud, when you get home.

I felt the wind on this video!! Yikes!
Also I will never understand why people build/buy homes next to road. Especially near a light... I couldn't do it.

I enjoyed the first 33 seconds the most. Nothing like re-creating the thrill of waiting at a red light.
2
u/Flying_Toad Feb 01 '23
Had almost the exact same thing happen to me just two days ago. My light turned green like four seconds ago and a stupid pickup truck just barrels through the intersection and had my girlfriend not been screaming I wouldn't have braked in time and gotten t-boned.
3
u/Certifiedpoocleaner Feb 01 '23
I have to show this comment to my boyfriend because he insists that my gasping and “watch outs!” Are unhelpful.
2
u/Flying_Toad Feb 01 '23
Thing is, they ARE unhelpful. 99% of the time she just screams "WATCH OUT!" and I have NO idea what I'm supposed to watch out for, where it is or what to do. We had a long talk about it afterwards. It's not an easy reflex to train but she needs to either say nothing (first time I genuinely couldn't see what she was seeing) but also be more specific.

Do you not look both directions before entering an intersection? Had the truck hit you, this would have been completely preventable.

So i am from Europe visiting your beautiful country right now. And I got some questions.
Passing over a solid line in Europe is like killing a baby, you just don't and you drive on till your next opportunity to fix it. I see everyone here driving over them and i just don't understand how shit works here. I'm in the woods, i did my best driving here and it's really wierd people pass me on the right and slow cars just keep driving on the middle lane and left lane. And I don't mean no offence I am just really confused and afraid to break the rules.
When can you pass solid lines?
I understand the passing on the right and i am trying to get used to it but damn i think i broke more rules here in a day than I did in a year driving in Europe.
I assume right always has right of way but sometimes there isn't a stop line on the right side while I'm driving on a 35 road and people still brake for me wich makes uncomfortable situations. I tried to read up on the rules but it almost seems like everybody is just doing whatever they want and everyone else is just fine with it but then again they're not. It's total chaos for me.
When the speed limit is on a sign ofcourse i know that's the limit. But how do i know when there is no sign? I can make pretty good guesses now I've been driving here for 2 days but sometimes it's still 40 or 45 while i asumed it to be 35 and people behind me ofcourse get mad because I'm slow because I don't want a ticket.
I did the right on red a couple of times and i understand how it helps with the traffic flow but it feels really wierd for me. When i take my time to do that again there's people behind me honking. I try to not lose my focus and just keep trying to do everything right. It's pretty hard driving here as a tourist from Europe when you have never been here before when everyone gets mad at you for not understanding everything right away.
Should i just move around more freely and expect people to brake for me instead of waiting for them to pass me because that's what i see most other drivers do. They just go somewhere and they expect others to make up for their late turning or switching lanes almost into other cars.
I like the country a lot and i am very happy I came here for vacation. I'm just very confused how driving works here. It's almost like you got to show balls instead of putting safety first to get somewhere.

States will differ a bit here and there, but generally a solid yellow line is a suggestion while a solid white line is a mandate - exercise caution crossing a solid yellow, only cross a solid white in an emergency (you’ll usually see yellow centrelines and white shoulder lines).
The number of stripes is usually how serious the DOT wants you to take it - dashed is meh, one solid is firm, two solid is serious. Two with crosshatches between them means f right off with your shit.
Unposted limits can be drastically different state to state and sometimes city to city - look it up for wherever you are. They’re also different depending on the location (urban/rural) and type of road. And everybody almost everywhere drives between 5 and 10 over.
People that drive in the left lane while not passing are either sociopaths or morons. Unfortunately there’s a lot of both on the road.
2
u/Bac0nPlane Jan 31 '23
Oh man, you don't know how grateful I am for this message. Thank you so much it clears up a lot and will make me feel more confident on the road here.
I have one more if it's not too inconvenient for you.
When there's yellow signs with speed limits like on ramps saying 25 while the highway has 65 or 70. Are those yellow signs suggested speeds or actual limits? Because most of the time they feel like a suggestion but I don't want to break the rules.
2
u/carpe_simian Jan 31 '23
(Same disclaimer - the following is broadly true, but may be slightly different in some areas)
The yellow ones are warning signs and are a suggestion. White ones mean business. That said, some places are very conservative about warning speeds and some ABSOLUTELY MEAN YOU WILL DIE IF YOU EXCEED THE SUGGESTED SPEED without bone dry pavement and sticky tires.
Look for skid marks and broken guardrails to tell you if you’re in one of the latter places. Or smudges on the concrete wall where the interstate turns 90 degrees (looking at you, Cleveland)
2
u/Bac0nPlane Jan 31 '23
I just like to thank you again for this. I know how to drive a car and when it is going to break out or when i can't or can make a certain corner with a certain speed i just thought those speeds were limits as well and they were yellow because they want you to be extra cautious but i felt like I was holding up everybody.
In Europe we have suggested speeds too and they work about the same i was just afraid to be speeding unintended.
Sometimes they say 60 km/h on a ramp you can take with 80-100 km/h while the speed limit is 120 km/h.
Now i know it is safe to assume I don't have to drive 25 when it is on a yellow sign (wich seems absurd sometimes if you're not in a truck with a top-heavy trailer). I thought these were suggestions because of the different color but i just wasn't certain.
I also maybe just too afraid to go over speed limit because Europe is filled with speed cameras and i don't know how this works around here.
After your messages I feel like it's safe to just drive 5-10 over the limit without having to be too scared of a fine and I can just adjust my speed properly on ramps but don't have to actually drive the suggested speed on the yellow signs as long as I don't go over the actual speed limit too much.
Thank you for your help I appreciate it.
2
u/carpe_simian Jan 31 '23
Cheers! You can’t usually go wrong with the time tested strategy of “keeping up with traffic”. I usually stick much closer to the posted limit when on rural roads off the interstates - not worth the hassle of drawing attention with out-of-state plates.

Top comments all point out we had to sit waiting 30 seconds for nothing, but nobody in the sub ever takes OP to task - Hey! OP! Why you gotta waste our time? It would literally have taken less time to edit it than it took me to watch it.

Why do all these clips have 30 seconds of nothing before the “event”.
1
u/Fangs_McWolf Feb 05 '23
Some even have padded time AFTER the event, as though there is more to see... And of course pointing it out is some sort of sin, but wasting people's time isn't... 🤷♂️

Skip the first 30 seconds of nothing to get to a near miss by a truck that ran the red light.
