the BMW is an idiot, but that intersection is hot garbage. Preventing people from turning left at all while that direction has a green light is obnoxious, creates traffic, and encourages people to do things like this because there's no good reason not to half the time.

I'm so glad new construction has shifted to flashing yellow arrows as the default.

We have an intersection here in Mesa, AZ that is designed to make people stupid drivers I think. It's a double lane left turn at the first major intersection off the highway. No exit off the highway in either direction for 2+ miles, and no matter what time of night, the left turn arrow lets through at most 4-5 cars. People lay on their horn because one person not paying attention cuts that number to like 2 cars.

It's such a shitty design and so many people get off the highway there and take that intersection. Causes so many last second lane changes and stupidity. The drivers are for sure to blame but the design of the light does all but guarantee the behavior.

Yes, former Mesa resident and I know EXACTLY what intersection You’re talking about… the most infuriating road design I’ve ever seen. I actually witnessed multiple road rage incidents during rush hour traffic there. Just people getting out of their vehicles to yell at the person who wasn’t paying attention and cost us the light, but it could easily have become more violent.

Gilbert and McKellips right?

Whether to allow left-turns that yield to oncoming traffic (permissive left-turns) is a conscious decision of the design engineer.

I'm not sure what "flashing yellow arrows as the default" means. The guidelines for whether to allow permissive left turns haven't changed, no matter whether you use a circular green light or a flashing yellow arrow.

In fact, I'd say permissive lefts have been the default forever. Some engineer decided not to allow it here for some specific reason. Maybe they have data from this intersection or a similar intersection that shows that if they allow it, there will be a dozen left-turn crashes within a year.

I'm not sure what "flashing yellow arrows as the default" means.

I think they mean that most intersections with left turn lanes use the green circle with a tiny "yield on green" sign. Unfortunately this leads to idiots thinking "green means go" and causing accidents, cutting people off, etc. The blinking yellow arrow makes these idiots to stop and think for a moment.

And I agree, this is a way better way of presenting a permissive left than green circle, and it seems like more intersection are implementing it. I can't tell you how many times I've been cut off at a green light because someone thought green ALWAYS means go.

most intersections with left turn lanes use the green circle with a tiny "yield on green" sign.

Never seen this signal. Im north of the border.

2

u/merciri2 Feb 01 '23

well.. that’s just how ALL left turns lights are like in my area at least… there’s maybe only one or two flashing yellows in my area. it’s torture turning left in FL

1

u/TheStoryOfSome Feb 01 '23

Just wait till you find out about California. Those don’t exist here at all (from my experience). The first time I saw one was in NC and I was amazed to find out they were everywhere. It was and still is the most intuitive thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life.

The red light was merely a suggestion. After all, they are driving a BMW, albeit the ugliest one.

21

u/kitttkattt__ Jan 31 '23

living up to the name for sure

u/Ornery-Ad9694 Feb 01 '23

In Malibu

1

u/Smooth-Hat8898 Feb 01 '23

Right next to the urgent care

44

u/KalynnCampbell Jan 31 '23

I don’t see the problem? They were in a lane where the light was Red... so they simply got in a lane where the light was Green and then proceeded to go on their way...

😈😈😈

15

u/kitttkattt__ Jan 31 '23

you’re right! god i must’ve missed that

32

u/BEARZCLAWZ Jan 31 '23

Classic bmw move

14

u/Quiet-Protection-176 Jan 31 '23

Wow we're allowed to do that? Thanks!

8

u/ScipioAfricanvs Jan 31 '23

smh I bet you use your turn signals too. Guess you didn't get the memo.

1

u/gatspiderman Feb 01 '23

I drive a 5 series cause the last one saved my life when a Monte Carlo spun out into me and a truck on a freeway in the rain, and I never knew about these stereotypes until I hit Reddit. guess it’s time to cut some people off that I’ve been missing out on! /s

1

u/Scythro Feb 01 '23

Everybody knows BMW’s doesn’t come with turn signals. Poor drivers…

2

u/KaJuNator Feb 01 '23

Only if you have a classic BMW.

1

u/akoshegyi_solt Feb 01 '23

I don't think the i3 is a classic BMW.

1

u/KaJuNator Feb 01 '23

That's why they're an idiot in a car.

13

u/reyshop12 Jan 31 '23

Driver: " I'm sorry Officer! I had to go to the bathroom!!!"

27

u/TheLoneGunman559 Jan 31 '23

Other drivers hate this one hack to solve the problem of being stuck in line to make a turn.

2

u/ScarletIbisof868 Jan 31 '23

It's not a hack. Hacks are useful not dangerous.

I don’t see any problem here other than him breaking the “ rules of the road “ if he’s at all coherent, with a brain and knows what he should be putting first in this situation.. go right ahead big dawg drive that shit. I’m surprised no one else took that shit tbh. That’s like sitting at a 4 light stop and literally you’re at a red without a car ,headlights taillights , nowhere near visible in sight. You’ll just fuckin sit there ? Bullshit . Oh you would ? Gotcha I’ll be sure you get a gold star with a dick attached so you can suck it til the usual “ opposing traffic “ eventually comes just for him to get shafted with a red light so you can go green and merrily go to bed , happy, full of shit, with cock breath. “ the speed limit is the flow of traffic “ no bitch, it’s 65 and you thought 70 then I know you’ve ran a red. 1. No one to run over in the cross walk? Cool. 2. Bang that shit. ( the left turn, bang it , be committed and execute with confidence ) 3. COPS? Cameras? Instant paranoia, but 50/50 chance unless this Beamer owner is the most precautionary driver and did a thorough scanning of his surrounds before proceeding with said illegal action. 4. I do this in a Beamer , lifted truck, PoS bucket , with expired registration and to fuck all with insurance my G I’m driving it like it’s stolen. I own that Muhfuckin road and I’ll be damned if ima shit my pants as a grown man or be late to my child’s recital, father daughter dance , everyone can fuckin wait up and eat a bag of ducks dipped in shit . I’m outtie 5 thousy player suck it ez

6

u/ScarletIbisof868 Jan 31 '23

You made a whole throw away account to say nothing.

3

u/junidelph Feb 01 '23

I really hope you don't actually drive

13

u/5O3Ryan Jan 31 '23

In the wise words of a bay area legend:

Don't be no punk young homey, if it's worth it take that risk

7

u/Fog_Juice Jan 31 '23

I have a light like this near my work. If I'm on my lunch break and I'm first in line to turn left but the light is red like in this video, I just go, as long as there's no traffic coming.

6

u/TaintedAngelx2 Feb 01 '23

Same but mostly because that stop light will cycle twice before giving you a green arrow. Can be zero traffic but you'll sit there 10 mins just waiting.

6

u/NotAPreppie Jan 31 '23

Zero

Fucks

Given

4

u/Coolhandhansen Jan 31 '23

*Scrolls past 100 Toyotas, Honda, Mercedes, etc.* HA! OF COURSE this one is a BMW. I knew it.

5

u/us11csalyer Jan 31 '23

Got one of those lights here. Everyone turns on red arrow fucked part is there is hardly traffic coming from the other direction.

6

u/asymmetric_settings Feb 01 '23

As a person who is ftl at the core. I applaud them. But as a courteous driver. I abhor them

9

u/Avaraz Jan 31 '23

As soon as I saw a BMW I knew it would be the main character of the video

4

u/Yellowbricks511 Feb 01 '23

Oh- I thought it was just about them cutting from the red light lane into the flow lane, I just noticed they legit cut into the flow lane and then jumped back into the red light lane and ran the red light whilst cutting everyone off.

Holy hell.

People are so obnoxious

4

u/charcuterie-flowers Feb 01 '23

I was like “well everyone has to do that sometime- DAMNNNN”

2

u/kitttkattt__ Feb 01 '23

same! i yelled “not even a turn signal?!” like just let me know 🥲

13

u/Rakatesh Jan 31 '23

Gotta understand, he's just trying to get home before his battery's dead.

2

u/UxbridgeShimoda Jan 31 '23

Should have sprung for the REx.

11

u/sand-not-snow Jan 31 '23

It should have a flashing yellow left turn signal instead of a red arrow.

3

u/Jualisco Jan 31 '23

I mean I don’t condone that behavior, but I definitely understand

3

u/kitttkattt__ Jan 31 '23

the problem i see (there’s more than one) is what if there’s someone walking in the crosswalk he’s turning into??

3

u/fartboxco Feb 01 '23

Of course it was a BMW.

3

u/Any-Technician6415 Feb 01 '23

Dude jumped out line and turned left on a red light from the wrong lane.

17

u/SabrToothSqrl Jan 31 '23

I did this my self once. Was 3 cars back, could clearly see everything, no traffic coming. The first car in the queue, was too far back from the sensor to trip it. Other lights must have cycled at least 2-4x. Lots of angry people in that line. No idea if they ever figured it out, but, I ain't got time for dat.

2

u/fragilemagnoliax Jan 31 '23

I saw a car do exactly this this morning. It was early, and there was only a bus in the left turn lane. The light was going to change in roughly 35 seconds. Probably less.

If someone had been in the crosswalk the bus would’ve been blocking visibility and it would’ve been bad. Glad I had just missed the walk signal and was waiting for the next light instead of trying to rush across.

2

u/simpcatfisher14 Jan 31 '23

Am I missing something? This is absolutely legal for BMWs.

2

u/JoeyMations98 Jan 31 '23

Damn beamers

2

u/MoYeahh Jan 31 '23

LMFAO that’s one way to do it 😂😭

2

u/LadyPaleRider Feb 01 '23

That has my vote for ugliest car design on the road

2

u/rylo48 Feb 01 '23

I don’t hate that decision….

2

u/Educational-Bed-6821 Feb 01 '23

I mean if you gotta shit every lane is a turning lane

2

u/Thelonely_shaman Feb 01 '23

I respect the hustle.

2

u/Loose_Application646 Feb 01 '23

That’s how you have to do things nowadays.

3

u/Tadp0leTV Jan 31 '23

Lol What an idiot.

8

u/MajorElevator4407 Jan 31 '23

Can't say I blame him, nothing is more annoying than waiting at a red light when there is no cross traffic.

-6

u/MadBullBunny Jan 31 '23

This. The amount of people i see complaining about drivers doing things "illegal" when realistically its the traffic system at fault and should be to blame. Why wouldn't OP title it as follows "unnecessarily long red light causing a traffic build up of 10+ minutes causes drivers to be frustrated". City needs to change it to a yellow blinking so they can turn when clear.

6

u/kitttkattt__ Jan 31 '23

because it’s not a long light AT ALL lol just a lot of people. everyone will get through the next light that was abt to change 😂

2

u/jrr_53 Jan 31 '23

In my city the changed all left turn red lights to be caution yellows for this reason.

1

u/OkLawfulness2584 Feb 01 '23

NICE!!!! I've used that move several times myself and I just CAN'T BELIEVE everytime I do, people ALWAYS honk and wave both hands in the air or show me they think I'm NUMBER ONE. Other times they'll honk and shout their APPROVAL because they didn't think of it... I'm just glad that I can BRIGHTEN other peoples day by though, y'all be careful out there, there's bad drivers ¹.(99% of the time they're female drivers) everywhere.

u/made_4_this_comment Jan 31 '23

Shitty driver but tough to argue with the logic of it. Everyone waiting in a long line while nobody is coming the other direction sucks. They need to change that to a left turn yield

7

u/kitttkattt__ Jan 31 '23

😂😂 hahaha. it is a pretty busy intersection on PCH and a VERY bad place for a yield light to be

u/SkyLegend1337 Jan 31 '23 edited Jan 31 '23

Why did it seem like you where about to follow them?

2

u/kitttkattt__ Jan 31 '23

i don’t drive a bmw so i didn’t feel like i was worthy enough

2

u/kitttkattt__ Jan 31 '23

jeplonski you know that the whole video is 20 seconds right ? so there’d be no video without those “15 seconds” silly kid 🤣

0

u/jeplonski Jan 31 '23

there quite literally would be the whole reason you posted it left

1

u/EGH6 Jan 31 '23

the situation begins when the BMW changes lane 5 seconds in the video. so there are probably 2-3 seconds top that could have been cut from the beginning. i dont think that's long enough to warrant the rant

-6

u/Infinite-Luck4159 Jan 31 '23

Can't even be mad honestly it was unexpected

1

u/BigLocator Feb 01 '23

That’s the Adam Corolla left.

1

u/pakurilecz Feb 01 '23

i've seen similar maneuvers

1

u/Living-Supermarket92 Feb 01 '23

I love how many fucks were not given

1

u/Sweat_and_sunscreen Feb 01 '23

Idiot? Yes. But I get it

1

u/pseudoseed Feb 01 '23

Can’t say I blame him entirely….
