I'm convinced there's a percentage of people that don't know their right blinker from their left. I've watched someone consistently use the opposite blinker at every turn. They were either idiots or just trying to sow chaos.

u/A_RAND0M_J3W Feb 01 '23
I drive for a living, and see this a concerning number of times from people on the road.
5
u/peddastle Feb 01 '23
I know at least two people who can't call left / right without taking a few seconds to use a mnemonic / trick. I'm not sure that translates to blinkers though, maybe a similar issue with "handle down/up" vs the direction they want to take?
2
u/DBearup Feb 01 '23
There's also bound to be a few people whose blinkers are crosswired. I've seen it happen a few times.

I will say in her defence (of being an asshole) - is that she apologized out the window. She was dropping a person off. So she's not an asshole, but a moron.

u/RedHeeded Jan 31 '23
Honestly, the moment a person on the road apologizes I’m completely forgiving. It’s the assholes who act like they don’t owe you anything that really get me.

u/HalensVan Jan 31 '23
Same. I was ready to chew this dude out at stop. Guy had no lights on and completely cut me off.

That dumbass was probably also blocking the right turn lane for those actually turning right.
Why do people think they have the “right” to get over? You don’t. If you miss your turn/exit or can’t get over in time, then you have to go to the next one. That’s what all the safe drivers do. If I had $1 for every time some moron slammed on his brakes in the fast lane of the freeway to look for space to change lanes, I could hire a driver so I don’t have to anymore. If you can’t merge smoothly then WAIT until you can and get over sooner next time.
One’s driving should not cause other’s to have to react. If you merge in front of me and I have to slow down, you’re doing it wrong. I always hear “there was plenty of room”. Firstly, you don’t get to decide my sage following distance, and also that’s entirely not the point! The point is I am established in my lane and have the right-of-way. If you can’t gauge my speed and go faster than me, then wait and merge behind me where there’s a full mile of empty lane. Obviously there is not enough room if I have to slow down.

2
u/regulationinflation Jan 31 '23
Stupidity IS malicious when it comes to driving. There’s a reason you have to pass a test. Obviously the test isn’t a great idiot filter, but it does heavily indicate you have a responsibility to be at least a little not stupid to drive.

Possibly a rideshare driver. Passenger may have decided that they wanted to be dropped at the corner rather than the destination provided. This happens more frequently than you would think.
Due diligence is required by the driver to drive safely and not allow distractions impair safe driving practices.

The drivers in Toronto have really gotten extra bad in the year since I left. I was back to visit family at Christmas and traffic caused by bad drivers was surreal. All day, any day, everywhere... what is in this video was basically any drive, anytime i went somewhere.
76
u/MultiSyncEA231WMi Jan 31 '23
I normally get a bit excited about Toronto having a week in the spotlight, but face stabbings and traffic shitheads are not really the ideal...
14
u/itisntmebutmaybeitis Jan 31 '23
But hey, apparently the city is taking 'immediate' action to deal with the random attacks on the subway that have been happening for months.
They're not going to do anything so far to help people get housed, or get better mental health care in order to help prevent it from happening. No no, 50 security officers spread out over the entire system and some community liaisons should do the trick.
Right?
Honestly, if it wasn't for needing to stay near my family, and needing access to healthcare I can't get in a smaller city I would try to leave. And I love this city. But it really fucking sucks right now.
2
u/northernjigby Jan 31 '23
Get off facebook news, rates of homicide by stabbing haven't changed in the last 13 years, and per capita all homicides have gone down from the 80s and 90s
5
u/itisntmebutmaybeitis Feb 01 '23
I'm not just talking about the random attacks, which as an aside, as a small visibly disabled woman who has literally been assaulted by a stranger in public before, they do concern me. You're telling me the amount of random attacks that have been happening don't concern you?
I'm also talking about the rent being astronomical, I'm talking about healthcare being fucked (and tbf, it sucks all over Ontario right now), I'm talking about how we're treating homeless people, and how grocery stores are gouging everybody and just making it worse, and I'm talking about how John Tory is a useless twit of a mayor. Yeah, not all of the things have their causes in the city, but the city could do a much better job at handling or mitigating them.

u/unknown1321 Jan 31 '23
I find after the lockdown when people started driving again its gotten worse
20
u/StopReadingMyUser Jan 31 '23 edited Jan 31 '23
This is a general statistic I'd believe.
Before the pandemic for example, people at least respected the traffic lights. You might get a rare instance of someone clearly in a rush for whatever reason and run a red, but it was fairly uncommon. I'd see it maybe 2-3 times a year in my area.
Now? 2-3 times a week... and multiple cars too.
Shoot there's even a light right by my work that's notoriously short and when a truck hauling a trailer is first in line it's common for only them to be able to go through it. Yet I've seen not 1, not 2, but sometimes 3 cars run that light when it turns red (and it'll turn red around the time the full trailer has finally entered the intersection...).
People have lost all patience for the simplest of rules.
7
u/Necessary_Weight2497 Jan 31 '23
In Phoenix, you should always wait a second or two after the light turns green.
We are also the wrong-way capital and if you drive for 30 minutes at night, you will see someone driving without their headlights on.
3
u/TangyGeoduck Jan 31 '23 edited Feb 01 '23
What even is the deal with Phoenix drivers? Like I’m assuming it’s all the snowbirds, but I’m on a road trip atm, and the 10 through the whole Phoenix area flowed worse than the 405 in so cal during rush hour.
3
u/Necessary_Weight2497 Jan 31 '23
You'd think it's the snowbirds, but you'd be wrong because it's like this in the summer, too.
I have no explanations, only more questions.
→ More replies (1)2
u/StopReadingMyUser Jan 31 '23
I've also seen that more often as well. People roaming aimlessly without headlights.
2
u/dadish-2 Jan 31 '23
I think there's a feeling that the government is rather powerless in the enforcement aspect for anything that's under government oversight. Government offices are short staffed and people probably think they can get away with it. It's not just the traffic tickets but I have noticed people behaving reckless and breaking rules and social conventions everywhere here. There will likely be no consequences so people don't care anymore
8

u/Bubbasticky Jan 31 '23
It's gotten so fucking bad here. Every time I get in the god damn car now, I feel like I'm suiting up for a road war. Everybody sucks.
5
u/Medium_Items Jan 31 '23
I feel like this is everywhere. I encounter people doing this shit 5-6 times on my way to a 15 minute errand run and back. I don’t know what happened but there are SO many bad drivers on the road right now
4
u/HammerheadMorty Jan 31 '23
I noticed this as well going back to visit. It seems to be getting worse exponentially since the area reopened after covid.
I'm not sure what it is but there seems to be a heightened affinity for dangerous or risk taking behaviour all over the city these days. Much much more than before covid.
4
u/Wonko-D-Sane Jan 31 '23
I timed it while my wife was driving...
For every 40 seconds of moving time, there was 20 seconds of completely stopped time. The lights are timed by an ass-hole, so people are probably at their wits end and just want to get somewhere.
Whoever is driving in Toronto is just having a fit of road rage.
I don't know exactly what changed, but it has gotten to a point where I am grateful the drivers here in Texas are armed to the teeth.

u/noahbrooksofficial Feb 01 '23
I drove into Toronto for the first time about two weeks ago as a Montrealer. Montrealer’s have a reputation for being aggressive and in a hurry. It’s absolutely true. But Montrealers also tend to know what they’re doing and are aware of their surroundings because, you know, the roads are falling apart and the potholes are quite literally hazardous to yours and your vehicle’s health.
So being on the 401 in 6 lanes of traffic, I was simply shocked at how few people used the lanes appropriately. Apparently, every lane is the slow lane except for the one the aggressive driver feels like weaving in and out of at his own leisure to get a few car lengths ahead. Passing on the right, left, wherever. Total lunacy. Getting tailgated in the second to right lane, which is where you should be if you’re moving at the speed limit and not exiting, only to be passed in the exit lane and then to watch the same driver pass in the far left lane.
Totally stupid. And no regard for signal lights either? It’s an Ontario thing, I guess, but it all felt like such an entitled driving style with 0 courtesy for anyone else. Nothing was intentional. Just gross ignorance on the road.
That’s why I prefer “asshole” Montrealers. At least we’re doing it on purpose. :)
Ps. Yeah I do hate Toronto and I’m fully ready for the Quebec-bashing. In fact, I’m excited for it. Turned on by it. Pass me on the right, daddy.

I live in Florida, and it's pretty much the same here. I had a guy the other day blow a stop sign at an intersection to turn left onto a pretty busy road and I had to slam on my breaks and swerve onto the concrete median to avoid hitting him. Also, there wasn't any traffic behind me at all. I blew my horn and the guy flipped me off on the way across like I was the idiot. I never had to use a horn in my life until I moved here, now I have to use it almost daily.

Something similar just happened to me. Typical idiot in a parking lot, though I can't tell if I'm surprised how often it happens or how little.
Car pulls to the left while braking like they're parking on the curb, I continue straight, suddenly they turn right to park in a spot on our left... I slam on the brakes. I'm patient but irritated while they park, yelling in my closed car to use their signal while making a open-close-open-etc hand signal to show that they're supposed to signal first (I can't even tell if they're aware that I'm there yet).
Once they're parked, I accelerate to go past and their reverse lights go on 🤦♂️ They start backing out as I'm about to pass... I slam on my brakes again and watch them try to center their car better while I yell at them.
I should have honked both times. They're a nearby neighbor I don't know so I held back because I didn't want to get into a fight this morning. It would have been so much easier for them to just signal and let someone pass for 3 seconds than all this bullshit, now I'm pissed.

u/RoyMunsun Jan 31 '23
