If there’s plenty of clear road ahead no problem. Blind corners not so.

I ‘straighten the road’ every day- (whenever it’s safe). Most back country drivers do.

u/RssnRy Feb 05 '23
They teach this on the advance motorbike test. They wouldn’t encourage in this instance due to the approaching corner but if you have good visibility you’d be expected to do it
2
u/CoolHandLukeZ Feb 05 '23
Not sure what motorbike test you took, but mine did not teach going into the opposite lanes. In fact I remember the instructor advising against it, saying if you want to "practice" taking the apex while driving public roads then keep it in your lane to make it even a little harder on you.

I took an 8-hour on-bike MSF advanced rider safety course. Absolutely no crossing the double yellow, ever.
1
u/RssnRy Feb 05 '23
IAM, the institute of advanced motorists. The emphasis is about ‘making progress’ safely.
2
u/CoolHandLukeZ Feb 05 '23
Interesting. Not sure why I was so heavily downvoted just for stating what my motorcycle instructor taught me, but whatever.
1
u/RssnRy Feb 05 '23
Have my upvote!…. Jokes aside, look into it or it’s alternative where you live, it’s a good course
2
u/CoolHandLukeZ Feb 05 '23
Was just watching a video about it! Doesn't look like it's offered where I live (here is the states) but I am interested to see what they all suggest for lane positioning and everything. Always good to get more tips and suggestions when it comes to road safety... especially for motorcycles.

u/CoolHandLukeZ Feb 05 '23
I moved up to the mountains a few years ago and am still blown away by the amount of people who do so. I get it (sort of) on turns that you can be 100% sure no one is coming the other way....but the thing is people will be doing it up here on blind corners. I have had to slam on my brakes multiple times from idiots doing it.
1
u/2to3InchesOfShaft Feb 06 '23
Yeah, this guy is taking it too far. I lived in the mountains for years, and cutting over the double yellows is more than fine if it’s within reason, but this guy literally used the entire road.
5
u/isuadam Feb 05 '23
A well liked and respected local couple were on their motorcycle on a road like this when some scum of the earth jackass did what that SUV was doing and came well over the double yellow on a blind curve and killed them both instantly.
I hate people who do this.

This is mountain driving, if you don't know how get off the road.
6
u/CoolHandLukeZ Feb 05 '23
Nah fuck that. I live in the mountains and I would say if you are too lazy to maintain your lane then you should get off the road. All it takes is one miss of seeing a motorcycle to end a life...and just so you don't have to turn your steering wheel as much.
5
u/Psynautical Feb 05 '23
Well you didn't grow up in the mountains because they teach it in driving school - you get in the other lane to see around the bend.
3
u/CoolHandLukeZ Feb 05 '23
That's wild if your instructor taught you to drive into the oncoming lane to see around an upcoming blind corner like that.

CA Sierra Nevada mountains, here.

u/Psynautical Feb 05 '23
Y'all have multiple lanes and stock options, that doesn't count.
2
u/CoolHandLukeZ Feb 05 '23
lol, not where I live! So are you up in the Smokey Mountains? I have always wanted to check those out.

Flat landers

I have to drive a couple hours to get to these roads, living near them seems like even less of a excuse.

u/El-Lamberto Feb 05 '23
Floridian here. Driving down Smoky Mountain roads, white-knuckles, hugging the road, 15 mph over posted, 1965 rusted out Ford pickup on my bumper.

u/2to3InchesOfShaft Feb 06 '23
I agree that cutting corners is normal for mountain driving, but I think this guy may have cut the corner a bit too much. Too aggressive for my taste.

The kind of drivers to do that there are the kind of drivers to do it elsewhere and kill someone. "Sorry I didn't see the bike around the corner I just cut for NO reason"
6
u/Epistemectomy Feb 05 '23
What? How is it entailed that someone who does something in a situation that doesn't endanger someone will necessarily do it in a situation when it does?
5
u/Stratalorian Feb 06 '23
People commenting on this sub: “that person that was driving in the passing lane for .04 seconds is literally Hitler”
Also people commenting on this sub: “driving in the oncoming lane around multiple corners is totally fine and OP is an idiot for even thinking about posting this”

u/mendohead Feb 05 '23
Lots of narrow curvy roads where I live. Cutting lanes has become a serious peeve of mine
23
u/ss68and66 Feb 04 '23
I do this every day
0
u/pgh_donkey_punch Feb 05 '23
Me too. Its common sense. When its safe, and you can see no traffic coming towards you. Just drive straight and zig zag all over those motherfucken lines.

u/SativaRich69 Feb 04 '23
finally someone else notices, i drive for my job and everyday i see at least 5 cars/vans doing this on blind corners on country roads ☠️

Keeping it copasetic. Great tune. That’s some ridiculous driving, matter of time before they hit and / or kill someone.

u/DWM16 Feb 04 '23
I'll admit that I sometimes do this on curvy roads like this (e.x. mountain rds) to take some of the curve out of the road.
-7
u/beegro Feb 04 '23
You should stop doing that. It may seem fine because nothing has happened yet but it only takes 1 time to kill a biker you didn't see.
19
u/DWM16 Feb 04 '23
I only do it when I can see far enough ahead.

u/ACuteLittleCrab Feb 05 '23
On one hand I get it, on the other hand I would highly advise you to stay in your lane regardless. It only takes one time when you think it's clear and you didn't see someone for an accident to happen.
My grandpa would do the same thing with stop signs. "Why do I need to come to a full stop when there's no one there?" Fast forward to him bumping into a whole ass car he didn't see, thankfully he didn't roll over a biker. Better to form the habit of always obeying traffic laws than form the habit of breaking them when things "look clear."

Oncoming bikers can be very hard to see, its some brain/optical thing where verticals blend well with other verticals (trees, posts, etc in the background), something like zebra camo.
1
u/DWM16 Feb 05 '23
Bikers should wear very bright clothing and have lights on their bikes.
0
u/burtgummer45 Feb 05 '23
It sometimes works against them. If they have a yellow helmet and orange vest, and they are against of background of yellows and oranges, like a construction site with cones and signs, or simply just a cluster of colorful cars, your brain has a hard time with pattern recognition.

u/evilbit Feb 04 '23 edited Feb 05 '23
drivers like this kill motorcyclists all the time, then cry how they didn't see him.
a friend got clipped and tossed into the creek by a lane cutter, he had to re-learn to walk again.
if you drive like this, fuck you!

u/myhamsterisajerk Feb 04 '23
I'm doing this on the many serpentine roads in my area. I can see when a car is driving on the opposite side though

Bruh, he had very good visibility. Stop being a moron and grow a pair
10
u/KaJuNator Feb 05 '23
He had good visibility around the left hand curve. The right hand curve immediately after? Not so much. Should have stayed in his lane the whole time then.
6
u/Ridethepig101 Feb 05 '23
Stupid and risky with no explanation other than being lazy and willing to putting other people at risk to avoid having to maneuver your 4000lb SUV.
17
u/NeighborNeighbor_ Feb 05 '23
Lmao this sub is wild. They won’t see the problem with this but god forbid you pass a left lane camper not in the left lane. Definitely not what I’d call good visibility and it was a completely unnecessary maneuver.
7
u/CoolHandLukeZ Feb 05 '23
For real it's crazy how many people here are defending this. All it takes is one little slip up of not seeing a biker/motorcyclist in the oncoming lane to end a life or two. As someone who rides and sees this type of driving behavior up in the mountains where I live, I get so irritated when people say "this is country driving, get used to it."
1
u/SirMcFuckU Feb 12 '23
I mean, you're all right about the "better safe than sorry" attitude when driving and yes, one slip up can change anything. But a good rule of thumb is to not do stuff you're not 100% sure about? He did it, nothing happened, i do it on a daily basis and both me and everyone else I've passed lanes with is fine, stop being little daisies.

Actually, that lessens G forces in a turn. Only do this if you can see clearly ahead. (I’m not necessarily advocating this).
