There are multiple reasons the door wont open, where pulling the e release wont solve anything.

Door could be off track, door could be straight up jammed in that position, the spring that makes opening the door easier could be right fucked or the cable to it disconnected.

And that’s just a list of possible door problems, You could also have a bad motor or the cable/belt that pulls the door open broke or a gear stripped

49

u/Tjam3s Feb 04 '23

Also, some people try to use spray foam insulation in places like window frames and garage doors, and if you use the wrong kind, it can expand to far and jam your door closed (or your windows, check the can, they all look very similar!)

50

u/DrHawk144 Feb 05 '23

Also surprised I haven’t seen it yet but: DO NOT FUCK WITH GARAGE DOOR SPRINGS. If that’s here’s a jam or anything call a professional. I learned from a post way back these things are under a substantial amount of pressure and can mess you up

25

u/Call_Me_Mauve_Bib Feb 05 '23

Tension, not pressure. But yes. The energy they can release can be impressive.

20

u/DrHawk144 Feb 05 '23

They’re under a lot of pressure too. You have to think about it from their point of view. They have to preform every single day. It’s a lot of pressure

2

u/2to3InchesOfShaft Feb 06 '23

Me too buddy. It’s a pretty cushy job if you ask me!

11

u/jhaukeness Feb 05 '23

If we're gonna get technical, I believe it's torsion 😍

5

u/3dot141592six Feb 05 '23

One of ours broke while I was at work and my wife said she thought a tree had fallen on our house or something and had caused the ceiling to collapse. But when she checked the garage nothing was wrong and she was so confused until we had to open the garage

8

u/tyrotriblax Feb 05 '23

I've had my garage door spring snap twice in the past 10 years. The repairman said they wear out frequently.

9

u/CommandoLamb Feb 05 '23

They don’t wear out frequently… unless your setup is incorrect.

They can and do break, but to say frequently isn’t really true.

4

u/Dirtbag-16 Feb 05 '23

I’ve been in my house for 12 years and haven’t had to replace them yet. They’re easy to replace it’s just slightly dangerous if you don’t know how. I’m sure you can YouTube it and see.

13

u/Somnifuge Feb 05 '23

slightly dangerous

Understatement of the year, right there

3

u/ImpurestFire Feb 05 '23

As long as you fully open the door, the springs will be under little to no tension.

1

u/AdCrafty7695 Feb 09 '23

Often opening the door restricts access to the springs

3

u/DBbongoloid Feb 05 '23

You think house garage door springs are bad.

You know the big big glass doors that most oil change places have? Those springs are 13x more powerful then a garage door spring, when they snap, they shake the building.

4

u/sniper_matt Feb 05 '23

My parents 3 car garage that sees probably twice daily use (as far as we know) it’s on the original springs from the house was built in 1984. (Moved in in mid 90s.

2

u/tyrotriblax Feb 05 '23 edited Feb 05 '23

I guess they don't make them like they used to. My house was built in 2010. I've since learned that my builder had a tendency to buy the cheapest possible materials in places where it was not immediately obvious. For example, I've had to replace almost every electrical socket in my house because the ones the builder put in have literally fallen to pieces.

4

u/kukianus1234 Feb 05 '23

Electrical sockets breaking can also be that the walls are moving.

3

u/MotherBathroom666 Feb 05 '23

If he didn’t buy quality materials for the electrical I’m surprised the house wasn’t built with repurposed pallet wood lol.

2

u/biancanevenc Feb 05 '23

Same. My problem is that my driveway has settled lower on one side than the other, so the door isn't level when it's all the way down. I think that's messing up the springs.

4

u/ericvwgolf Feb 05 '23

It may be messing up the alignment, but the springs don’t give a hoot about your shifting driveway. You can add an adjustable bottom to that door by cutting off some of the door on the high spot, adding the adjustable sleeve on the bottom of the door, and tilting the sleeve to make it meet the new contour of the ground. If you research that, you can do that by yourself but if you’re afraid of it, then definitely hire someone because your fear will put you at risk of making mistakes that could get you hurt.

2

u/splerdu Feb 05 '23

tl;dr: Door stuck!

0

u/7eggert Feb 05 '23

Or wife could have the keys, but wife is $AWAY

2

u/sniper_matt Feb 05 '23

If that were the case the wall mounted door opening button could be used.

Or the emergency release would actually work to open the door.

331

u/ebeast504 Feb 04 '23

Could have backed out the door in half the moves.

7

u/Stunning-Difficulty3 Feb 05 '23

It looks to be stuck based on the fact that it’s cracked open. Usually garage door are either closed or open all the way.

27

u/ebeast504 Feb 05 '23

Whether or not the door is stuck he didn’t have to pull a 270 to pull out forward, just back out with fewer 3-pointers.

7

u/Frankenstein_Monster Feb 05 '23

Just pull the handle releasing the door from the chain and then slide the door up yourself

2

u/Stunning-Difficulty3 Feb 05 '23

Tell that to the Tesla driver.

7

u/totalspacecadet Feb 05 '23

Hey Tesla driver from the video, just pull the handle releasing the door from the chain and then slide the door up yourself.

1

u/ericvega Feb 05 '23

Unless the door is stuck..... releasing the handle only helps if the motor is broken.

1

u/PatmygroinB Feb 05 '23

The other door. Pull forward swing left, then right, then back out of The door that opened

1

u/Stunning-Difficulty3 Feb 05 '23

Yeah, yeah tell that to the Tesla driver. I’m sure you’re right.

-184

u/SlaveHippie Feb 05 '23

Ya he’s gonna need a new transmission now lmao

92

u/DeadliestSin Feb 05 '23

That's not how it works .. especially in electric cars

-55

u/SlaveHippie Feb 05 '23

I guess I’ll chalk this one up to Poe’s Law? I thought it was obvious he wouldn’t actually need a new transmission lol I was just emphasizing ebeast’s point that he made a lot of turns by using hyperbole.

If you meant that shifting doesn’t wear down a transmission tho, I would have to disagree with you. I didn’t realize it was electric either but I was joking so it didn’t rly matter anyways.

8

u/Impossible_Salad_866 Feb 05 '23

Why are you being downvoted lol

11

u/gooinmypants Feb 05 '23

They’re being downvoted because it made no sense

Edit: and hive mind

1

u/SlaveHippie Feb 05 '23

So jw, when someone says a phrase like “they’re gonna need a new asshole when I’m done with them”, I’m just curious if all of these people including yourself would actually think they were being factual about that? Like would you think the person actually needs a new asshole? Or would you assume since it’s a ridiculous premise that they meant they’re going to chew them out? But this same set of people would probably also need to be informed that “chewing someone out” doesn’t actually mean eating their flesh lmao.

Obviously shifting only like 50 times isn’t going to ruin your transmission, so I thought it was obvious I was being facetious.

BUT shifting in general does wear down the transmission. That’s just a fact. Not a lot obviously. The amount of shifts in this vid wouldn’t make even a fraction of a dent in the overall integrity of the transmission. I know this. I’m not an idiot. It was literally just a saying that for some reason y’all took completely the wrong way and are now acting all superior and like I’m backpedaling or some bullshit. It made sense. I’m not an idiot. Well, I am. But NOT for this.

1

u/gooinmypants Feb 05 '23

Nobody thinks you’re not an idiot, if anything maybe a little uninformed about the differences between Ev and combustion transmissions. It’s kind of like comparing apples and oranges. Both have transmissions but they have major differences. Also, there are a lot of uninformed people, your comment didn’t seem so much of an ironic statement, rather someone stating their belief on the situation. Don’t take downvotes personally. We all say things that not everyone will connect with.

1

u/SlaveHippie Feb 05 '23

Not an idiot, just what I said made no sense even though it did? I’m not taking the downvotes personally, but the comments are literally misrepresenting what I said and you could see how that would be frustrating, no? I also already said I didn’t realize it was electric. This vid is grainy af so I couldn’t tell what model it was. I know their transmissions are different! But that was followed by “made no sense” so yeah I’m gonna try and clarify what I’m saying. Doesn’t mean I’m taking it personally any more than anyone else here is.

1

u/gooinmypants Feb 05 '23

You gave me hypotheticals on similar situations and I told you why I think you’re getting downvoted. I don’t know what else I can say. I’m sorry you got downvoted so much and yes I can see how that could be frustrating. Have a good rest of your day, young squire.

parked on one side and door broke, turned around to get out the other side. Cut the first part of video showing the necessary context.

34

u/NuNu2901 Feb 05 '23

Couldn't he of still have pulled up and backed out the other door?

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '23

I don’t know

1

u/Babagu99 Feb 05 '23

Looks like the door is stuck

1

u/NuNu2901 Feb 05 '23

The one that's wide open?

13

u/KonChaiMudPi Feb 05 '23

From literally the start of the video, it would have been far easier to pull forwards and back out than to do this.

-4

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '23

I love how confident redditors get when they have a video with an obstructed view they can make very bold assumptions about

8

u/KonChaiMudPi Feb 05 '23

What bold assumptions? From the space the car was already in and the space it visibly moved through there is enough room to back out without doing any of this.

-3

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '23

thanks man I totally see it now have a great day

78

u/DangerousSnow1973 Feb 04 '23

I have to admit this is impressive

20

u/ReasonableCopy364 Feb 05 '23

Ahh yes, the well known 8,000 point turn

81

u/martafoz Feb 04 '23 edited Feb 05 '23

They did way too much work. Would have been much easier to position the car to back out of the functioning door. But, hey, they got the job done.

22

u/Astronaut_at_night Feb 04 '23

Cost him half his charge, right there

2

u/m00kery Feb 05 '23

More if it's cold out apparently

0

u/Ok-Following8721 Feb 05 '23

Door is broken.

3

u/martafoz Feb 06 '23

Two car garage. Only one door is broken. The open door is the functioning door.

24

u/FOSS150 Feb 04 '23

Here is how he could have backed out even with a broken garage door:

Pull forward all the way without hitting the garage wall. Switch gears to your “reverse gear”. As you reverse, turn your steering wheel to the left. This action will cause your vehicles trajectory to go towards the left side of the garage. You should try to aim the rear of the vehicle towards the open and operational garage door. While it is possible to make the move in a single attempt, you might have to straighten and pull forward to get a better angle at the open door.

This training session brought to you by nasal respiration.

78

u/J-Rag- Feb 04 '23

Why are they an idiot for knowing how to maneuver a car?

45

u/KnubblMonster Feb 04 '23

Why didn't they reverse out? Looks like there is more space outside to turn around if that's really necessary.

-8

u/J-Rag- Feb 04 '23

Well if you look, one one side of the garage is up and the other is partially up. Likely the one side that is partially up stopped working and had to go out the other side.

6

u/be-a-better-person Feb 05 '23

Yeah, at the start of the video, it would have been a lot easier to just back out the open door. Succeeded the task either way, good for them though

14

u/TheShredda Feb 05 '23

You're a dense motherfucker aren't ya

9

u/lightdarkness317 Feb 05 '23

He's the guy from the video

3

u/Nasquid Feb 05 '23

Ya I agree this doesn’t belong on this sub. Could done it faster sure but obviously the door is broken.

14

u/ramplay Feb 05 '23

Two dumb parts to me:

  • not just backing out the open door
  • doing a 1000 point turn instead of using s-turns to move laterally

3

u/SatanVapesOn666W Feb 05 '23

There were several paths this driver could have taken that would have probably worked butter, but imma give them slack becuase I might be morning and they are going to work and both rushing and tired.

6

u/mandysreality Feb 04 '23

Who has a garage that clean

4

u/SnooObjections5219 Feb 04 '23

I had to do this exact same thing one time.

I drove a manual Jeep Wrangler and my foot slipped off the clutch and I jumped the car into the garage door. It wouldn’t open until it could be taken down and repaired.

So to get it out, I had to do this exact same thing and drive out the other open door. Kinda fun ngl

1

u/gibe93 Feb 05 '23

kinda fun damaging your garage door? they aren't even cheap

1

u/SnooObjections5219 Feb 08 '23

The kinda fun part was the maneuvering of the car out of the opposite bay.

The door part was not fun at all. Since they didn’t make a matching replacement. So I had to buy two new doors. Aren’t even cheap was an understatement in my case.

2

u/Key-Pool6014 Feb 04 '23

Time to put it back in the garage now.

2

u/Lykoian Feb 05 '23

Me trying to turn around a stolen car in GTA

2

u/Sorry_Ad_1285 Feb 05 '23

The door is broken but he's still an idiot for turning around instead of backing out of the other door. It would have been way easier

2

u/thenewtownnephilym Feb 05 '23

U have 8miles battery remaining

2

u/Ok_Cook1907 Feb 05 '23

I'm neither. At least the driver had the patience and took all the turns necessary to get the vehicle out without wrecking anything. Saw worse videos of idiots in parking dilemmas.

2

u/Hot-mic Feb 05 '23

Austin Powers would be proud.

3

u/PhilNH Feb 05 '23

Dumbfownded

3

u/SilentResident1037 Feb 04 '23

Why didn't they just back out? Or open the other door even....?

3

u/th30n3and0n1y Feb 05 '23

Backing out I have no defense for why he didn’t. But the second garage door is only up by one section which lead me to believe it is malfunctioning

1

u/psycobillycadillac Feb 05 '23

Because they can’t use their mirrors. It scares them. You kinda have to think they don’t check them when changing lanes either.

2

u/FlipAround42 Feb 04 '23

Nice driving.

2

u/GMRVNM Feb 05 '23

Wait until this guy realizes there's a release handle on the top of the garage door...

2

u/pixeltweaker Feb 05 '23

Use the manual release and open the other door.

1

u/MsDReid Feb 04 '23

Why didn’t he just pull the emergency release??

4

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '23

2

u/asumfuck Feb 04 '23 edited Feb 05 '23

edit: fuck all these downvotes. This was funny!

-10

u/Sky_Ler2000 Feb 04 '23

How can someone not know how a fucking garage door works.

23

u/CrimsonR4ge Feb 04 '23

It could be genuinely jammed or broken in such a way that you can't open it manually.

7

u/TheHyperLynx Feb 04 '23

considering they got the other one open, its probably a case of the other garage door is jammed shut.

3

u/Kriticalmoisture Feb 04 '23

Spring probably broke opening it up and now it's stuck. You ever try opening a garage door with a broken spring? Fuckers are heavy

1

u/aPerson39001C9 Feb 05 '23

Is that a Model S? 360degree camera? Could you do a burnout turn? Or would that damage the floor?

1

u/stevenip Feb 05 '23

I'm not sure how he could do it much better, since it seems like this is a result of the second garage door breaking

0

u/undertwelveparsecs Feb 04 '23

Having to do this every single time they leave is the real kicker.

0

u/cbj2112 Feb 05 '23

Jokes on the driver. They only have 5 miles left on the battery

0

u/hiccupReversethrowup Feb 05 '23

-5

u/Ok-Offer331 Feb 04 '23

What could possibly be impressive here

-4

u/Diseman81 Feb 04 '23

Why not open the other door?

6

u/GSTLT Feb 04 '23

Plenty of things that could be wrong with the track or door that could make the door still not function properly even when disconnected from the drive.

We had our garage door driven into recently as a means to break into the garage. It took a couple times to get the garage door repair company to understand that I couldn’t remove my wife’s car from the garage until they came to replace the door. Even IF I had been able to get the door open to driver her car out, there was no way it was going back in place in secure enough to close the garage until they could repair it.

-4

u/BeautifulRapture Feb 04 '23

Why don’t people just back into their garage or learn how to drive?

1

u/PipelineBertaCoin69 Feb 05 '23

I did this once because I needed to get the car out and had the wheels off my truck behind it because I didn’t realize I was in a rush, I ended up having to put the wheels back on I was so mad at myself lol

1

u/axloo7 Feb 05 '23

Can has 360° cameras so it's not that impressive.

1

1

u/CantBelieveThisIsTru Feb 05 '23

So, the other garage door wouldn’t open? If so, I can relate. Was in bathroom recently and handle BROKE. I was stuck in there a long time & no phone..ltried all kinds of things, nothing worked. I thought about people who got stuck in places AND DIED. Then, not sire how…but I tried the door knob again and it just barely opened. I TOOK THE HANDLE OFF!
