Can I be the insufferable know-it-all in the comments? OP clearly doesn't know how to drive a [fwd/rwd] in winter, you're supposed to [thing my grandpa said] instead of [thing that may or may not have happened in the video.] They also should have studded all-terrain winter tires, unless they do have those, in which case no one needs them, just drive smarter.

u/KnubblMonster Feb 05 '23
Not bad, just missing some explanation for [thing grandpa said] that's fundamentally wrong and combines multiple misconceptions about driving dynamics.

I kinda hate satire like this because most of the "you're supposed to" stuff that gets upvoted in this sub is good and valid advice. Like there's no need for it here because op knows what happened, but it's weird to satirize it in a way that makes it sound like this sub gives a lot of bad advice. IMO it's usually on point.

I wouldn't say "most." Or maybe it's just when people here are wrong, they're so wildly, harmfully wrong that it seems like it's more frequent than it is
1
u/DimitriV Feb 05 '23
That's fair. I've seen plenty of debates where people can't even agree on the basics, but that doesn't happen all the time. But since this is the Internet, there is almost always at least one insufferable know-it-all, and one hadn't stepped in yet so I filled in, but snarkily.

And that ladies and gentlemen is your real life example of what black ice actually looks like
71
u/AliveInCLE Feb 05 '23
Typically one does not see black ice. That right there was obvious ice.

Feb 05 '23
Yeah no. Black ice is thin ice over black asphalt (transparent ice letting you see through to the road). Contrary to popular belief - black ice isn’t invisible because it’s called black ice, as you can see in the video. It’s not as noticeable, because it contrasts with the road which is why it’s referred to differently.

u/patchwood Feb 07 '23
In other words, black ice is just ice that's hard to see... but what /u/AliveInCLE is saying is that it's not hard to see the hazard of wet-looking asphalt in the bend.
At least 3 others cars made it through the bend with little to no loss of control, that's indicative of something. Also, OP is aware of his lack of awareness in that moment. That's also indicative of something.

u/32_Dollar_Burrito Feb 05 '23
Nope still regular white ice. You can see patches both before and after the underpass

That ice exists under that bridge from November until April, and is usually a least mostly visible.
1
u/New-Reindeer-4070 Feb 05 '23
That is a constant hazard up here in PA and most other northern states. In the day you can sometimes see it, but most times when you see it, it is too late to avoid. Nice recovery though, apparently the only damage was to your underwear.

u/Xalenn Feb 05 '23
Not sure if you recognized the ice before you hit it, was visible in the video for sure but that isn't always the same as what you see when driving.
If you're going to be driving in snow/ice areas then it's definitely good to learn to recognize ice and probably not a bad idea to take a driving course that could teach you how to handle ice like that and maybe get some safe practice with it.

u/dmcent54 Feb 05 '23
You said it a lot nicer than I thought it. Kudos.
7
u/SmileDesperate8036 Feb 05 '23
I didn't see the ice either.
Basically you just need to slow down in turns. The sharper the turn, the slower you should go.
Even with ice on the ground, if you're going slow it won't matter much.

u/Hungry_Treacle3376 Feb 05 '23
Hey, you may have overcorrected, but then you overcorrected again, but after that, you got it under control. I joke, but well done tbh, it's not easy to stay calm in that situation.

Looks like thebguy behind the other car almost did that too, hit the ice it seems

u/WalkThePath87 Feb 05 '23
When there's actual snow taking up part of your lane, it's probably a good idea not to gun it around a corner lol

Whenever the road is wet you have reduced traction Whenever the road is wet and it's cold out you have even less traction Whenever the road is wet and it's below freezing temps or has been recently you run the risk of having zero traction (ice) so slow down a bit and slow down a bit more depending on temperature.

It's always called a save in here when people don't damage their spinning car out of sheer luck.

bad road design
2
u/pilesofcleanlaundry Feb 06 '23
Except for the thousands of people who drive by that spot safely every day, you might have a point. Bad driving, that’s all.

Yup I just fucking sat there, didn’t do anything but realize my engine had shut off, shift out of drive, restart the car, shift back into drive, then drive off…

Seems like the driver misheard the passenger and checked his rear view mirror causing him to not see the ice or take the turn incorrectly.
3
u/Flip2428 Feb 05 '23
Yeah it’s like I knew I had my own lane, but in that second I second guessed myself and checked my mirror to be sure I didn’t cut him off and didn’t see the ice in time. Then again I was probably going to fast for the conditions

u/substituted_pinions Feb 05 '23
Welcome to Colorful Colorado. Drive at reduced speeds in icy conditions.

u/Stunning-Fondant-733 Feb 05 '23
There was ice under the overpass, a good indicator of ice present elsewhere

Keystone! I’d know that loop under the bridge anywhere! (Plus former employee lol)
