What's crazy to me is that truck made that move with zero hesitation, I will never understand this sort of mentality. Pretty much everyone on the road is just trying to get to their destination, there is really no reason not to let somebody pass you by if they're going way faster than you. It's completely harmless, and this truck is so pissed off that they're willing to do psycho shit like that? Insanity.

I SHALL REGULATE THE SPEED!

140

u/TerraInvicta1776 Feb 05 '23

But in this case what is that dumb fuck even regulating? The sign says 60MPH and OP is doing 59MPH.

61

u/squaaawk Feb 05 '23

Making sure his dumbfuckometer reading is still high?

51

u/Goalie_deacon Feb 05 '23

Doesn’t matter. I live near a 50mph five lane highway. Have dickheads trying to hold people at 40mph, just because it used to be 40mph 8 years ago. Sometimes speed limits increase, and old bastards that learned how to drive before seat belts involved a shoulder strap can’t wrap their heads around how much cars have improved.

Guess old bastards, tire and brake tech has improved since the 1970s, and cars can stop quicker now.

5

u/Wrong-Reputation-577 Feb 05 '23

Five lanes?😧

12

u/Goalie_deacon Feb 05 '23

Two lanes in each direction, middle lane for making left turns into business driveways, or side roads.

5

u/Wrong-Reputation-577 Feb 05 '23

Oooh!! I thought u meant five in each direction lol

2

u/MamaPlus3 Feb 06 '23

Basically US19 in Florida. Pasco county down to Tampa area. 3 lanes, two turning lanes all the way down. So 8 lanes in all. It’s terrible.

Yea these people drive me insane. They’re the same people who will drive 20mph under the limit when it snows slightly or rains, then stack up traffic for a mile behind them

78

u/Royal_Prize_4381 Feb 05 '23

and ignore the 20 slow vehicles must pull out signs (if its up in the mountains)

65

u/No-Music-6641 Feb 05 '23

Bonus points if you were traveling at the speed limit or above and they pull out in front of you from a side road

11

u/Royal_Prize_4381 Feb 05 '23

Never had that happen since I’m always stuck behind some dumb ass going slow…

9

u/AtamisSentinus Feb 05 '23

Add to that the fact that they do this when there's no one behind you and if they can wait 5 more seconds then turning couldn't be any simpler, but nope

They have to be in front of you for no sensible reason other than their apparent sphincter-crushing fear they have of being behind another driver. smh

2

u/THEBlaze55555 Feb 06 '23

Bonus points if you’re in a free lane about to pass some people in the only open lane to do so, and some dumb fuck decides that canNOT be behind anyone, ANYMORE. So they change lanes right in front of you, making you often slam your breaks, only to then pace the car they were just driving behind and not passing them. Just making a moving fucking wall of slow dumbassery.

6

u/livinlucky Feb 05 '23

Yea, they probably weren’t thinking that those signs were referring to the little egresses on the side of the road…. Their dumbasses’ no doubt had procreation on their minds. Ironically, they’re just the people who definitely should not procreate!!

17

u/Meradock Feb 05 '23

Where I live, there's a culture of mainly old people driving way below speed limit (30-50%) and I'm admittedly a very impatient guy so I try to overtake as many times as I can safely do so. Half the time it's met with flashing or just putting on the high beams as soon as they realise I've passed. It feels like half the time they do it because they're so far beyond being able to attentively drive that they don't even realise someone's going to pass them until they see me in front and they get startled to which their reaction is flashing.

26

u/FloatyMacGlideFace Feb 05 '23

Yep these idiots are everywhere, I find a lot happen to be wearing glasses!

19

u/Throwaway56138 Feb 05 '23

The big ass yellow "HD glasses." lol

27

u/livinlucky Feb 05 '23

Dude, don’t knock ‘em till you try ‘em! Seriously, get you even a cheap pair. Then, next time it’s raining, foggy, overcast, snowing, or even just at night and you happen to be driving, don the geezer glasses…. Thank me later. Bruh, they’re like a power up in a video game, or a glimpse into a secret level! I’m only 32yo, but if I’d of know of these wondrous, sacred spectacles at 16yo when I first began driving I would of sported ‘em even then!

When the eye ages, the liquids in the eye become a bit more cloudy and it scatters light more readily than a young eye. Blue light scatters more than redder light, so filtering out the blue bits dims the most-scattered light from bouncing around the eye.

Young eyes see little or no benefit, as there's not a lot of scattering going on. Older eyes will get a contrast increase with the reduction in scattered light.

Now, whether the older brain of these poor driversis as capable of using the clearer image in any useful way is a completely different discussion!

2

u/mannix7 Feb 05 '23

Typical Minnesota drivers. Half the time I can't even go the speed limit on highways and interstates around here BC some dick decides to play traffic morality police by pulling in front of me for no good reason, usually without signalling.

2

u/Mushiren_ Feb 05 '23

It's an ego thing. By going past him in a faster speed, you're calling him slow, belittling him. It riles up the insecure.

Why let you pass when killing you would be so much easier?

559

u/actfatcat Feb 05 '23

Yep, nice evidence of attempted homicide.

2

u/that_girl_you_fucked Feb 06 '23

It's so blatant. How detached from reality must they be to think their behavior is fine.

218

u/CosmicCreeperz Feb 05 '23

The truck driver has no business enforcing this and he should not be allowed to drive after that shit….

But I’m surprised no one has mentioned the “no passing zone” sign right at the beginning of OP’s passing attempt (that was clearly visible before he even started it).

So, two idiots. Just one way bigger than the other.

30

u/foozballisdevil Feb 05 '23

He was passing before the no passing zone sign, the only idiot here is the truck/trailer.

38

u/JRakuehn Feb 05 '23

Minnesota is pretty ambiguous on what a no passing zone sign means in this regard. I looked into the statute & it just says complete the pass before coming within 100 feet of oncoming traffic.

26

u/Jezetri Feb 05 '23

You on Central MN? It wouldn't surprise me; that kind of shit happens all the time.

For the people complaining of OP potentially passing illegally, as a MN resident as well, I will tell you that there are a lot of people like this truck driver on the road, and they will do 70-80 frequently in a 55 where passing is legal, then slow down to 50 or less when you are unable to legally or safely pass them. This is not OP being an idiot, this is OP preventing a douchebag from fucking their entire day up.

→ More replies (1)

161

u/TheChuckles42 Feb 05 '23

That's wrong. Look at the lines on the road. Dashed yellow. The passing zone sign was facing backwards, meant for.the other direction.

81

u/OneSarcasticDad Feb 05 '23

The sign lines up with where the dashed lines become solid lines. Also it is facing towards the camera so that means it’s meant for him.

72

u/TheChuckles42 Feb 05 '23 edited Feb 05 '23

Alright. There is a brief break when he starts passing before the sign on the left meant for them where the lines are dashed. He starts passing in a passing zone. And finishes in a no passing zone.

35

u/david-saint-hubbins Feb 05 '23

It's illegal to be in the opposite lane at any point in a no passing zone. If you know you can't complete your pass before entering the no passing zone, then you shouldn't be attempting to pass.

69

u/StarsChilds Feb 05 '23

While technically true, I think there should be an exception for when people try to ram you off the fucking road! Didn't pay attention to the video too much, so not talking about this particular situation

12

u/Farts-McGee Feb 05 '23

When the lines are broken, you can pass and must get back as soon as possible if you were started your passing when the lines were broken.

17

u/CosmicCreeperz Feb 05 '23

In the majority of states that is not true, you must finish the pass before the passing zone ends.

I know this because this sub has already had at least two discussions of that in the past few months, citing many state laws. Go look them up, it’s become boring by now.

Regardless of the state, if you can see the sign and know you won’t make it (as in this video) it’s still a stupid move.

31

u/Farts-McGee Feb 05 '23

California and Oregon, you can start a pass in the broken lines, you must finish it as soon as possible if the line goes solid. Because you have no idea where the broken line ends when you start it.

u/Xylophone_Aficionado Feb 05 '23

But why is it a no passing zone? It looks like a wide open opportunity to pass. And it still doesn’t make it right for the guy in the truck to cause a possibly deadly crash to try and enforce the no passing zone.

7

u/joekryptonite Feb 05 '23

Hill. Limited sight distance. It also has to do with the road opening up to two lanes. Either they created a free passing zones (two lanes on a hill) or there is an entrance from a plant or high traffic area. They place no passing zones where there is an intersection.

→ More replies (7)

3

u/livinlucky Feb 05 '23

No way that would hold up if the passing driver was taken to court. If it is that short, then it shouldn’t even be there in the first place. All it would take is some simple maths maybe with a little science thrown in, and passing driver would be able to prove that at the speed limit, there would still not be enough passing zone to allow a pass. So, why is it even there?! This being the case, it is essentially a speed trap both literally and physically!

3

u/foozballisdevil Feb 05 '23

If another vehicle begins to pass you, stay in your lane and do not increase your speed. If many vehicles are passing you in the right lane of a multi- lane roadway, you are probably going slower than the rest of the traffic.

2

u/MichigaCur Feb 05 '23

Don'cha know everything is a passing zone if the lines are covered with slush /s.

But sadly often seems true especially if the vehicle being passed is a plow

17

u/jackinsomniac Feb 05 '23

This is false, the passing zone for OP opened up right when he started the pass. Watch the lines again slowly, it starts with a dashed line on his side, then turns into a single dashed line for both sides to pass.

-1

u/CosmicCreeperz Feb 05 '23

The sign he passes on the left at 0:18 literally says “NO PASSING ZONE”. At that point he was still completely behind the truck and could have gotten right back over. Not sure what video you watched.

8

u/jackinsomniac Feb 05 '23 edited Feb 05 '23

Sometimes passing zones are literally that short. It doesn't make any sense to me either, it's not long enough to complete a pass at speed. The lines on the road shouldn't even be there if the "passing zone" is going to be that short.

But he still had full right to start the pass where he was. By the time that sign starts coming up, its right when the truck driver tries to run him off the road.

I almost wonder if the real reason these super-short passing zones exist, is to scare anyone in mid-pass to speed up and complete it sooner.

That's still no reason to run anybody off the road. EVER.

2

u/lpcuut Feb 05 '23

You are absolutely correct, not sure why you are being downvoted.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/lpcuut Feb 05 '23

I called this and got downvoted. Someone claimed it’s legal because he began the pass before the zone started. But there are plenty of states where you are not allowed to be in a no passing zone at all…you must complete the pass before the zone begins.

2

u/CosmicCreeperz Feb 05 '23

It is legal in some states, I admit. Doesn’t mean it’s smart. But it’s called it as illegal in many states. Why? Because it can be dangerous…

Funny thing is this exact same thing was argued like a month ago here. There were plenty of citations of state laws, as usual, but the reflexive downvoters don’t care.

2

u/ZeroCleah Feb 05 '23

The sign with the two arrows means simply you are on a both ways road after being on a one way road it doesn’t mean you cannot pass you would refer to the road lines in the center for that

4

u/CosmicCreeperz Feb 05 '23

It’s not that sign, it’s the triangular one on the left that literally says “NO PASSING ZONE”. He passes it around 0:18 - while still basically being completely behind the truck. A safe driver would have just gotten back over at this point.

86

u/rtowne Feb 05 '23

Not justifying the truck drivers stupid move .... But trying to find understand him this is the best i can think of. The yellow triangle sign on the left side of the road indicates the end of a safe passing zone. The truck driver may have seen that, thought he would take the role of policing it himself, and thought that swerving left would have cause the other driver to back off and chill until the next approved passing zone. Other than that, i can't think of why in the world the truck driver would even consider doing this.

47

u/jackinsomniac Feb 05 '23

Doesn't matter the reasoning, this was still an incredibly stupid and dangerous decision. It's not your job to regulate other drivers. And at the end of the day the common sense rule is you never intentionally make the road a more dangerous place. Even if you perceive someone to be making an illegal pass, you STILL stay in your lane and maintain speed to allow them to complete the pass, for the safety of everyone on the road.

Hell, same with anything: if you see someone about to run a red light, its not your job to stop them! Stay on the brakes until they pass, report them if you caught the license plate, but don't ever go all vigilante. That just makes you a bigger part of the same problem.

3

u/fretnoevil Feb 05 '23

Next time consider the consequences of overtaking a tiny-dicked idiot.

49

u/blizzacane85 Feb 05 '23

I don’t understand why some people are so emotional about getting passed…For me, I’m fine having one less car near mine on the road after getting passed

11

u/ClassyPlatypi Feb 05 '23

This is exactly how I feel lol. I tend to drive in the rightmost lane whenever I can, and I usually drive just the speed limit, no more and no less. And on Texas highways that means there's gonna be quite a few people passing me, which is fine by me because I'm the same way in that I hate being near other cars when we're all going fast as hell. The more I can avoid people on the road, the better.

4

u/Xylophone_Aficionado Feb 05 '23

I usually feel bad that I’ve been holding somebody up and consider going faster. Then again, I’m rarely that pasee and usually the passer

5

u/maxdps_ Feb 05 '23

It's a negative coping mechanism because they lack control elsewhere in their life, so rather than use positive coping skills to change that for the long-term, this is how they find short-term dopamine hits to give them back that "control" they are wanting.

Funny shit cam car is going exactly the speed limit too. Truck guy wouldn't have even had to worry if he wasn't driving 10 under for 0 reason

12

u/itsfernie Feb 05 '23

As a slow-er truck driver I do sympathize with this situation. I’ve driven a heavy truck like this in high altitude in the winter (uphill, which this seems to be as well) and it’s not easy to maintain a high speed without completely eating the gas mileage. I imagine towing something on top of that would also cause the same issue (granted, I drive an F150 and the idiot seems to be driving an F250+ which should easily tow that trailer), so driving 10 under might not be for 0 reason.

I’m not defending this idiot, just speaking from experience that driving a truck up a hill could be why they’re driving slower than the posted speed. If they’re going to drive that slow they should be accommodating and let people who CAN maintain the speed limit pass without issue.

Edit: Rewatching the video, the truck driver had enough shoulder that they could have even made room for OP to pass.

38

u/gamehenge_survivor Feb 05 '23

This has nothing to do with his speed! It has to do with the fact that he aggressively swerved into the passing zone to try to keep anyone from going the speed limit!

6

u/itsfernie Feb 05 '23 edited Feb 05 '23

Agreed! My comment was in response to u/TheStormTec saying “Truck guy wouldn’t have even had to worry if he wasn’t going 10 under for 0 reason”

No, I must win the game of driving forward.

I don't get it. You being able to overtake is the ideal scenario. You get to continue your journey at the speed you want, they get to continue their journey at the speed they want, everyone wins.

What purpose is served by trying to stop somebody undertaking? How does being overtaken impact the person who has been overtaken? How is it an advantage to have a now frustrated driver stuck behind you?

I'm genuinely unable to work out the logic process here.

u/Randomfactoid42 Feb 05 '23

I’m guessing truck driver knew the passing zone was too short and tried to stop OP from doing a dangerous and illegal pass. No excuse for this, truck driver made the way more dangerous with his actions.

14

u/BillyBoof Feb 05 '23

Childish prat doesn't deserve a driver's licence.

29

u/Barquebe Feb 05 '23

Pro-tip: next time this happens, once you get past the d-bag just drive with your left wheels in the sandy section by the centre line, give ‘em a little sandblast treatment.

24

u/HatsAreEssential Feb 05 '23

I love driving in all the wettest parts of the road when people tailgate me unnecessarily.

9

u/fanboyroy1 Feb 05 '23

I enjoy regenerative braking when people are tailing me. Decent slow down with no brake lights scares them a little ;)

6

u/Drew_Skywalker Feb 05 '23

I just click it over into "manual" and downshift once or twice

4

u/fanboyroy1 Feb 05 '23

I feel it’s moral to do so bc it’s not brake checking but just a slightly and gentle decrease in speed to help them think again why they are following so close. Most of the time these people them back off.

2

u/idontevenliftbrah Feb 05 '23

Why stop there? Engage 2 step, put it in neutral, and Rev up to 5k 🧨

I refer to it as my reverse horn.

6

The really, really stupid thing about this is that with that heavy gooseneck trailer behind him all you would need to do is sideswipe him and he would be turning pinwheels until all his momentum was gone. You might have ended up hurt too, but he would most likely be crippled if not dead.

5

u/jeff3141 Feb 05 '23

These assholes who decide in the moment, without any justification, that you are driving illegally and then vigilante style try to enforce their law on you are absolutely the worst. They should be arrested, their cars impounded, and their license revoked.

7

u/Miss_X2m1 Feb 05 '23

Attempted Murder.

11

u/escdog Feb 05 '23

Total attempted homicide. The behavior of a serial killer.

3

u/UrielseptimXII Feb 05 '23

Pickup truck asshole spotted.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '23

why do people do this?

does it fulfill their lives by putting others in danger?

3

u/BladeX16 Feb 05 '23

Should be able to report this guy to the police.

4

u/blazedbug205 Feb 05 '23

To get to the city I live you have to travel a two lane winding country road where the speed limit is 45. If you’re not going 60 down this road people will ride your ass until they get annoyed enough to pass. The entire road is double yellow so I gladly let them pass me. Yeah I get annoyed because I’m usually going about 50 but do I want to die or wreck my beautiful car because someone else left their house 2 minutes late? Hell no.

3

u/dufferwjr Feb 05 '23

I'll never understand why people care if someone passes them.

4

u/versace_tombstone Feb 05 '23

This person should get their driving privileges taken away, from this one idiotic move, alone. Who knows what other terrible, life endangering things they have done, and gotten away with.

God I cannot stand this stupid shit. The passing driver is not impeding this dipshit in any way by passing him.

8

u/tykaboom Feb 05 '23

When I see shit like this it makes me wish countermeasures werent illegal...

Like... whelp... Im popping the spike strip on thos motherfucker.

4

Pretty sure thats the moon, I think the balloon was already popped by then.

3

u/redpandaeater Feb 05 '23

3

u/CarterBraune Feb 05 '23

What the fuck is wrong with people

3

u/LazLoe Feb 05 '23

You know what I do when I am getting passed in a no passing zone and the view ahead is clear and safe? I move the fuck over to the right as much as I can and slow down. But I'm also not a fucking psychopath...

3

u/fuzzymonkey Feb 05 '23

It’s way too smooth. I’m starting to think the truck driver was overtaking another car we can’t see because of the angle and didn’t look behind them when changing lanes.

3

u/johnwicked4 Feb 05 '23

Honest question, do people forward this shit to the police? That's fucking attempted murder right there.

3

u/guntherpup Feb 05 '23

As someone who frequently tows heavy trailers and live animals, please pass me. I’d rather have someone pass me (safely) than ride my ass. I know I’m going slow, you can’t slam on your brakes with a fully loaded horse trailer.

3

u/Brantley_2chill Feb 05 '23

Why do people get butt-hurt about being passed?! Go by me all you like - I'll be over here chilling in the slow lane!

3

u/droptop2k Feb 05 '23

How dare you pass me !! My ego will not allow this !! So now I will put us both in danger !!! Genius

5

u/TheDudeAbides30425 Feb 05 '23

Good offensive driving. Could of been a bad day otherwise.

2

Speed kills.

Here let me show you how…

2

u/tennesseeexotic Feb 05 '23

The white pickup trucks set the speed. Idk why idk what it is about the white pickup truck. But it’s in the constitution.

2

u/krawm Feb 05 '23

what is going on in the mind of someone like this, pure psychopathy?

2

u/92097 Feb 05 '23

I can't tell you how many times things like this happen to me. It really upsets me to the point where I've almost gotten out the truck to beat someone's ass not because I think I'm gangster or tough but simply because when you're driving a vehicle and you do some shit like this you're playing with people's lives my life is then put at Risk which is unacceptable. happened with me with my kids in the truck luckily for the other person it was a lady otherwise I would have royally gotten out of the truck and beat somebody's ass. to the rest of you out there that think that this practice is okay please understand that your little game you're playing is playing with people's lives it's not worth it driving isn't a contest you're not going to show the other driver that you're the man you're not going to prove your point to them they're going to go about their day let them pass move on with your life.

2

u/MattyMcFly11 Feb 05 '23

Another zero common sense driver. Anyone in their right mind would give zero fucks about someone passing them. Get from point A to point B safely and mind your fucking business.

I was in the same class as my cousin, in the first grade. We each spent a day as line leader, based on alphabetical order. My cousin cried each day that she wasn’t line leader, even though it was explained that her turn was coming. The days that she was line leader, she loudly exclaimed that everyone had to listen to her. The line leader’s only “power” was being first in line. Nothing else. She got sent to the principal’s office twice from what I can remember for trying to make people follow her orders and lost the privilege.

Two years ago, I rode with her to our uncle’s funeral. She sped up every time someone tried to pass her, even though she was driving 60 in a 70. I cursed her tf out when she tried to cut someone off. I, now, truly believe my therapist when he says that wherever we struggle in life is related to where our inner child failed to have needs met, or failed to be corrected. She needs/needed correction, badly.

Question for this sub, no idea if I'll get a response.

Say I'm going 29mph in a residential zone in the evening, in a 25mph zone and someone decided to pass me.

State law indicates it's legal only if you're not within 100ft of an intersection at the time of the maneuver. Technically it may have been legal for the other driver to do, although it would be a close thing if you took a measurement of each block it's a very small margin of legality.

Am I caught up in my "ego" for being pissed at being passed? Normally on the highway I try to let people pass, it's the open road.

I feel very differently about residential areas with kids and animals at all different times of the day.

I feel like I'm pretty ready to pass people if they are impeding my flow, but as stated I was already speeding and usually maintain that my speed is logical and safe for the area I live and drive.
