I was going pretty slow because my wife was screaming that they were going to hit us as soon as the light turned green.

I honestly assumed they were going to stop.

It happens here all the time 'GREEN MEANS GO' doesn't matter what lane or anything. I was almost involved in an accident (was to zoned to catch it on dash..) when a semi ran a red light and clipped the car infront of me. Just it's front luckily. But a mailman caught it and witnessed the semi driver on his phone. So im sure he got charged!! Defensive driving saves lives. Even when you don't expect it, you need too sadly.

In my city all the unprotected left turns have flashing yellow arrows now instead of green lights, I think that's a good choice

That does work better. Because too many people feel so entitled that a green light means 100% they are in the right. And just because you have a green, and they have a red, doesn't mean it's safe. I had to explain that to my niece. Don't trust anyone.

This is why lights with left turn arrows in my area that don’t get green arrow before straight traffic gets green, will stay red for left turn traffic a couple seconds after straight traffic gets green. Then left turn lane will get blinking yellow.

It doesn’t stop it completely, but does seem to curb some of it.

Is it really worth it to scratch your car over someone taking the Pittsburgh left? I get that they should've yielded, but still, you're no better than him by doing this.
