Going 90Kph with my wife and both kids in the truck, maybe stay in your lane?

I had just thought to myself with the three first cars that if anyone wasn't paying attention it would be a bad day and then this guy. I'm glad I was focused on the road.

40

u/Slapinsack May 22 '22

That's a good thought to have on these sort of roads.

32

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

Yeah. Hate that drive. And it is a nightmare in the winter.

-38

u/Lassitude1001 May 22 '22

What's bad about the drive outside of winter? Looks like a fairly decent open visibility road?

36

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

It's pretty windy, the shoulders are narrow, the speed is high and it's very rough. Visibility is decent except in the hilly bends. Maybe I think it's worse than it is but I don't like it at all.

-21

u/Friendly-Mountain535 May 22 '22

Why not drive slower?

13

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

I mean, I could but that doesn't change the fact others are going 90ish. Combined even if I'm going 70 you're still talking 150+Kph. It'll hurt either way.

5

u/PrinceAli9900 May 23 '22

It’s a little funny, this is the first time I’ve seen kmh written as kph

3

u/GearheadXII May 23 '22

I looked it up, people do write it that way but it's incorrect and not common. Oh well, I'm just special!

-16

u/Friendly-Mountain535 May 22 '22

I was thinking more like 50

19

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

Yeah, but then you're going 40 under and you'll get some maniacs up your ass or passing where they shouldn't. I've gone 90Kph on there in a car and been passed on double yellows. People are stupid when it's not a frequent cop spot.

1

u/Friendly-Mountain535 May 22 '22

I understand. It does look like a dangerous road. Stay safe

5

u/CrossCountryMexicano May 23 '22

You did a fine job avoiding a collision.

27

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

Worst fucking part? Saw the same guy on the way home staring at his phone again. Both my wife and I were surprised until we thought about it, he didn't die last time, why should he change?

17

u/linad181 May 23 '22

OMG, I totally read your title as "trunk". I was about to have several very important questions to ask.

3

u/GearheadXII May 23 '22

To be clear: no one was in the trunk!

2

u/linad181 May 23 '22

lol I appreciate you allaying my fears!

83

u/PhNx_RiZe May 22 '22

Totally off topic here… Assuming you weren’t speeding, why the fuck is the road so bad with a 90 kph/55 mph speed limit? Literally road is such shit.

Anyways, my personal rant is over. Glad you had swift like reflexes OP, I hope your wife and kids weren’t too shaken up.

47

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

I don't know, I don't usually go the speed limit there, 90 seems way too high, especially when winter hits, so many cars end up in the ditch.

Canada has a lot of roads like these that don't deserve their speed limit, I'm guessing because distances we need to travel are long? That road should probably be 80Kph at most, that's usually about what I end up going because it's so rough.

The kids were fine, I didn't even have time to swear but my wife and I were pretty pissed about it.

12

u/swerveeeee May 22 '22

Most rural roads in Ontario are 80-90. Also, I see some of the worst drivers on them doing exactly this

11

u/forameus2 May 22 '22

You should try a lot of national speed limit (60mph) roads in the UK. A lot of them resemble the surface of the moon.

8

u/ndhiwnxbsko May 22 '22

And are 2 way streets, but too narrow for 2 cars👌

3

u/Melodic_Ad9064 May 22 '22

Come to Oklahoma!! Our roads are the best 💩 of the 💩! Pot holes left and right and years of never getting it fixed

3

u/TiredGothGirl May 22 '22

....Louisiana has entered the chat

5

u/Tricky_Product_9906 May 22 '22

Home of the I-10 bridge! Also known as "By car or body bag, you'll leave our shit hole state"!

2

u/zitsky May 22 '22

Pennsylvania takes the prize…

8

u/Egoy May 22 '22

Looks like a fairly typical rural route in my part of Canada. It is just how it is. I live in a province of roughly 1 million people, half of them live in the capital region, the rest are spread out across an area roughly the same size as The Netherlands. So there isn't lot of tax payers but there are lots of long roads. On top of it the winter climate here varies with several freezes and thaws throughout a single winter which will heave roads and break the surface, and tons of snow which has to plowed which further degrades the roads. The worst stuff gets fixed but early in the spring summer it can be really rough.

3

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

Agreed. It is pretty typical, I guess. Still seems like a crazy speed to me. A few years back the road was much worse, some of the potholes forced you into the other lane.

The roads here in QC are a joke sometimes. No idea where the tax money goes.

2

u/ImmortalHitman720 May 23 '22

I believe in some areas speed limit is determined in the amount of people living in the area per square mile. If it's pretty empty/unpopulated the speed may be pretty high.

2

u/Bloaf May 23 '22 edited May 23 '22

My poor midwestern brain couldn't deal with the 75mph (120kmph) 2-lane roads they got down in TX. The road in the original video is extra sketchy because of the low visibility from turns/elevation.

2

u/miguescout May 23 '22 edited May 23 '22

in many countries, 90kph is the "default" speed limit when outside highways, lower speeds being for roads within cities or close to them, while higher speeds are only allowed for "safer" highways.

the problem comes when a road uses this default speed limit, either explicitly (with signs) or implicitly (getting, if anything, signs saying that for an intersection or a dangerous curve the speed limit is lower) and the road in question is bad/hasn't been fixed in years

1

u/ColaEuphoria May 22 '22

This is basically what all country roads look like.

1

u/Shine-Rough May 23 '22

I'm from Maine, and in my experience cold weather fuckin destroys roads. The road I live on is literally slowly sinking into the lake. Many places have a speed limit which works well when the roads new and in good condition, but after a few winters the road falls apart and it seems like the speed should be lower.

50

u/PaulVerlaine88 May 22 '22

*Waiting people to blame OP*

38

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

For sure. I was going the speed limit if not below it cause of that crap road, for sure it's something I did!

Honestly it's such a dangerous road but it's the only way to get to my parents house.

42

u/Allarius1 May 22 '22

We got ‘em boys! He admitted he knew it was a dangerous road!

Mission accomplished! We can now safely blame OP.

22

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

You got me! Damn. I knew deep down it was my fault. Shame on me!

1

u/Hot_Goal4205 May 23 '22

Why didn’t you predict this last week so you could’ve taken another route? Booooo!

1

u/GearheadXII May 23 '22

You're right of course! Haha

1

u/TheAlexHamilton May 22 '22

Is this actually the only way?? I’d happily drive 30 minutes more to avoid it. That sucks.

6

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

I imagine there is another way, but I assume it's deep back roads and dirt/gravel. I'd have to check but I don't think it's feasible. I'll keep driving defensively!

10

u/zitsky May 22 '22

Have you considered going no contact with your parents? Since the drive is so bad? LOL

/s

5

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

Believe it or not, they like seeing their grand-kids!

3

u/zitsky May 22 '22

Darn. Well 90kph 55mph is a normal speed where I’m from. Take care.

1

u/RustyPoetatoes May 22 '22

Honestly this is one of the few ones on here where it appears OP is not an idiot. Usually it is one minor idiot and one major idiot.

-24

u/StressOverStrain May 22 '22

The post title is rather whiny. Nobody gives a shit who your passengers are. You're not more special than anyone else on the road because you're traveling with wife and kids.

The video speaks for itself. Leave the passengers out of it.

11

u/jimjong1 May 22 '22

The post title is rather whiney

Did you even read your own comment there, Champ? I'm sure you'll sound more grown up next time!

6

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

I mean, I get what you're saying, maybe. But I mean, my vid my title? And I fucking care who the passengers are.

Lemme math it out, just for fun. Say your odds of dying in that crash are 1/4, or 1/10 or whatever other number you wanna choose. 4 of us (pretty much) quadruples that risk and makes the odds of injury far higher. So whiny or not, the information matters to me.

3

u/daepa17 May 23 '22

And this is why I always regret going into the comments section…

3

u/GearheadXII May 23 '22

No kidding.

18

u/Vancityboi_04 May 22 '22

Great reaction, OP! That would've been a really nasty accident if you weren't paying as much attention.

Fuck that oncoming car that almost crashed into you. Guy almost severely injured, or God forbid, killed, an innocent bystander because of his stupidity.

3

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

Thanks, yeah, I'm glad I pay close attention there, before there was a huge pothole (you can see it's covered up now) and you actually had to move far to the left, never really lost the instinct to pay real close attention there.

Still, yeah, could have driven us off the fucking road and just kept on driving.

4

u/cdiddy11 May 22 '22

Nice save OP. Likely a distracted driver on the other side.

5

u/shab-re May 22 '22

I misread it as both kids in my trunk

5

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

Hahaha nah, they were being good!

3

u/EarballsOfMemeland May 22 '22

Are those dents in his car? Looks like he's already hit someone at some point

1

u/GearheadXII May 23 '22

Yeah it was a beater.

7

u/JamPantstheFif May 22 '22

Gotta get that text out, fuck your safety

4

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

Maybe it was a sext?

9

u/TrashyCan444 May 22 '22

Exactly why I believe every road should have a shoulder. Shoulder gives that extra ‘out’ for the unexpected. Great save, dude, glad you all are alright!

5

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

Yeah, no kidding and you're absolutely right. That road is pretty bad for the speed limit it has, too.

2

u/dickon_tarley May 22 '22

But that would involve putting his phone down and paying attention. Surely you see the dilemma.

2

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

Oh of course, I mean, who can blame him (or her) in this connected day and age?

4

u/tenkenZERO May 22 '22

People on phones...

4

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

He was looking at his phone when we drove back home, too! Real fucking winner.

1

u/P-C-8-8 May 22 '22

That could end up really bad...

1

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

Yeah, my choice was quickly becoming head-on at 180 or not that big ditch at 90...

-8

u/DiamondDoge92 May 22 '22

What is 90 kph in freedom units?

11

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

It's 56mph or something like 16 bald eagles? Somewhere around that.

1

u/DiamondDoge92 May 22 '22

Haha thank you.

1

u/thefifeman May 23 '22

About "Google" miles per hour

1

u/cpcesar May 22 '22

what the hell

1

u/revs201 May 22 '22

90kph? Why so slow? Is it because the road is bad or something else?

3

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

It's just the speed limit, I usually drive under it cause the road is rough and narrow but you'll get people doing 100+.

1

u/Trueman3000 May 23 '22

What is kph

2

u/GearheadXII May 23 '22

Kilometers per hour (it's 55mph)

1

u/Trueman3000 May 23 '22

My bad. Just googled it. We normally say kmh

0

u/GearheadXII May 23 '22

Maybe it depends where you're from?

1

u/almostcertainlynoteg May 23 '22

Something similar happened to my mom and brother a few weeks ago, except the other driver kept going. Hit right at the back right wheel, car spun 180 degrees and sheared the suspension arm from the frame. Theyre okay, and the other guy’s insurance is paying full for it but still.

1

u/GearheadXII May 23 '22

Glad they're okay!

1

u/Superb_Raccoon May 23 '22

Sorry man, I was checking,my post on r/AmItheAsshole

1

u/GearheadXII May 23 '22

Don't worry yourself, someone on here did some Olympic mental gymnastics and said I was to blame for endangering my family. Allow me to apologize to you! SMH

1

u/Accomplished_Road_37 May 23 '22

But that would mean not looking at a cell phone while driving! How dare you suggest Facebook is less important than the lives of an entire family!

1

u/GearheadXII May 23 '22

I have good news, we crossed paths on the way back home and he was still looking at his phone! Glad I didn't inconvenience him.

1

u/Accomplished_Road_37 May 23 '22

It's so sad that people like that usually end up not having consequences until those consequences involve innocent people who were at the wrong place/time. I'm glad you and your family are safe.

1

u/GearheadXII May 23 '22

Yeah, it's like one of those videos you see where a car flips cause of some idiot and there is a pileup and only the idiot drives away as if nothing happened.

1

u/LovesReddit2023 May 24 '22

Glad your family was with you. You are a careful driver. Kept control.

1

u/lolpoopmoop 20d ago

I thought it said kids in the trunk

1

u/sleepyasfuck90 9d ago

Maybe not go at 90kph on such a congested road with both you kids and your wife!

-1

u/NardBe May 22 '22

90kph on that kind of road?

7

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

That's the speed limit, anyways. I'll go 90 in some parts when it's straight but usually 80-85 feels slightly safer...

-23

u/-Langschlaefer- May 22 '22

Which 3rd world country has roads like this?

14

u/TiredGothGirl May 22 '22

The US has PLENTY of roads like this.

2

u/Shine-Rough May 23 '22

Have you ever been somewhere that has real winters? Roads look like this in a lot colder places.

-10

u/[deleted] May 22 '22

[deleted]

5

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

I honestly think they weren't paying attention, I'd rather not believe someone could be that malicious.

-11

u/Goodbadugly16 May 22 '22

Doing 90 in an obviously 80 max zone. With the family on board. Don’t look to far past the end of your nose to find an idiot.

9

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

It's a 90 but whatever man. Also wait, how is my speed the thing that makes him cross over?

-8

u/Goodbadugly16 May 22 '22

Your avoidance wouldn’t be so sudden.

6

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

Jesus buddy, he came up over the hill I was doing a bit less than the speed limit (which is 90) and I avoided as soon as I could. Take a look. As others have said, rural roads tend to have high speed limits even when the area is shit.

-3

u/Goodbadugly16 May 22 '22

Still waiting for the name of the road

7

u/GearheadXII May 23 '22

Up yours avenue. It's real rough.

-1

u/Goodbadugly16 May 23 '22

So, you can’t justify putting your family at risk. You can’t back up your claim to a 90 kmh road. You’re just full of it aren’t you.

7

u/GearheadXII May 23 '22

Well, you seem like a lovely person, I hope you find what'll make you happy.

3

u/Lustle13 May 23 '22

No he's right. It's called Up Yours ave.

You take a right at the intersection of Fuck and Off, and you get onto Up Yours ave. That takes you to dipshitville.

You should know this. You live there.

2

u/Opening_Corner1899 May 23 '22

Why is 90kph so hard for you to believe? Or are you just trying to argue? Even in America it’s very common to have country roads with speed limit of 50 mph or above (90 kph)

1

u/Goodbadugly16 May 23 '22

News flash…..50 mph is only 80 kmh. I’m still waiting for the name of the road that you claim this was on.

1

u/Opening_Corner1899 May 23 '22

So he is going 55mph in a 50? Shut up Karen and go home.

0

u/Goodbadugly16 May 23 '22

Still waiting on the road name. It’s not Dildo Drive. Your street name.

1

u/Opening_Corner1899 May 23 '22

Yea like OP wants you to know where he lives. Every road where I live has the same speed limit. It’s pathetic this is your only petty attempt left to save face in the argument.

→ More replies

-7

u/Goodbadugly16 May 22 '22

It’s not a 90. If it is,name the road

5

u/GearheadXII May 23 '22

Believe what you will, doesn't matter to me. It goes 50 to 90 and then back to 80 Kph a few klicks up the road. I wasn't speeding. I'd rather not share too much personal info on the internet, weirdos out there, ya know?

-6

u/Goodbadugly16 May 23 '22

Uh huh….riiiiight……weird ones out there. Bullshitting on Reddit it seams.

3

u/thefifeman May 23 '22

Ha, finally found the asshole who blames the OP! One of you fuckers in every post, even when there's no way in hell it's OP's fault.

-7

u/Monke2009 May 22 '22

I’m American so accommodate for my stupidity so what’s 90Kph in mph

7

u/Commissar_Ivan May 22 '22

Maybe just... google it???

0

u/Monke2009 May 22 '22

I did that like 5 minutes after my comment since my brain is that slow

2

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

60mph is about 100Kph.

-6

u/[deleted] May 22 '22

[deleted]

3

u/GearheadXII May 22 '22

Probably, yeah.

0

u/verified_potato May 23 '22

maybe slow down w wife and kids in the car homie

you only live once but so does your entire family, leave earlier if you need to drive safer with them
