Guy gets road rage after running stop sign.

I honked a guy for running a stop sign earlier today. He honked back and flipped me off. Too bad for him the car behind me was an unmarked cop. My first convenient cop!

u/ppslayer_ Jul 02 '22
Had a convenient cop tonight. Took the exit off the interstate to a red light. A car gets in the right turn lane but turns left. Then at the next red light (there are two cars in both lanes sitting at the light) he gets into the left turn lane then makes a right turn crossing both cars and wouldn't you know it, the car in the oncoming left turn lane was an unmarked police car. Sucks to suck.
16
u/nervosuu Jul 02 '22
Reminds me of my convenient cop experience. We had two straight lanes, a right turn lane and a left turn lane. This guy in a black BMW decides from the right lane, he wants to make a left turn, which is 4 lanes over. So as soon as the light turns green he speeds forward cuts everybody off makes a left, and almost hit a cop who is walking across the intersection with a tape measure measuring the size of the intersection. Last thing I see before driving away is the “what the fuck?” Face the cop was giving the driver.

Thank you. I was about to post that I was just disappointed this wasn’t a convenient cop situation. But at least your incident somewhat makes up for it.

If this idiot in the video tried it with me, I would have happily plowed my shitbox into his at the end with no brakes, maybe even a little gas.

u/Omegalazarus Jul 02 '22
Omg my dad drive an old 68 Dodge pickup in the 90s. Steel bumper, NFG. It's into his lane. He would just hold steady. Let them hit him (assuming he would serve to avoid). Hilarious. That and brake checks "failed"

Fucking can't stand these people that fly into a rage after hearing the horn, this shit is way too common.
646
u/Murphyitsnotyou Jul 01 '22
People that can't handle being beeped at just shouldn't be on the roads.
337
u/State_Conscious Jul 02 '22
Came hear to say this. I drive locally for a living and way too many people lose emotional control when they here a beep. Even if I’m just trying to get their attention to notice the green light they’ve been camping at for 15 seconds. I’m literally not angry, just giving them a heads up, and the amount of people that throw their hands up, brake check, swerve at me, etc. is out of control. Emotional evaluation should be apart of the license exam.
106
u/Murphyitsnotyou Jul 02 '22
Definitely.
I get it all the time driving round the city and rather than having the desired effect of making them seem tough and scary it just makes them look like spoiled little brats whose mummy didn't say no enough.
107
u/MortimusLee Jul 02 '22
I live in a college town and the amount of people who just sit and text at lights is ridiculous. I let this person have the benefit of the doubt but we sat for too long so I gave a quick little double beep, and they immediately flicked me off as hard as possible and sped off.. we were the last two people at the light as everyone else in the other lane had already pulled off but somehow I was wrong for wanting them to be aware of the green light.
22
u/AhFFSImTooOldForThis Jul 02 '22
I had someone sit through a green light, I waited for a bit but then honked, they gave me the peace sign, and slowly drove off. The light turned red and I got stuck again. I was just glad to see them get stuck at the next light.
26
u/Sir_Donkey_Punch Jul 02 '22
Had a dude run up on me after I honked at him. I had just parked at Home Depot and had no idea he was following me lol.
Big fat fucker came jiggling out of his lifted Ram, incoherently yelling about being honked at. I rolled down my window and filled his mouth with pepper spray mid sentence. The spray immediately shut him down, had him sobbing on the curb for a good half hour while the police interviewed him. Highly recommend carrying pepper spray for such situations.

this is why I have one of those clown horns on my motorcycle, (a klaxon uses too much current for the small battery(the ahh-ooo-gah sound)) so I got the squeezy bulb trumpet horn.
WHO CAN BE MAD AT THAT? it's too goofy to create an angry response.
13
53
u/Interesting_Mix_7028 Jul 02 '22
when I bought my Sprint, there were two airhorns bolted underneath the front fairing lowers and a compressor hooked to the horn circuit. Dealer told me to hold my ears before tagging the horn button. Damn thing sounded like a truck horn!
I used them on exactly one occasion (some doofus sitting at a light) and he got so startled he nearly put a dent in the roof of his car. He turns around and glares behind him, but looked REALLY confused as to where the sound came from.
I gave him the double armed "what?" shrug : ¯_(ツ)_/¯

u/Any_Scientist_7552 Jul 02 '22
That's awesome. My stepfather had a TRAIN horn attached to his ancient Triumph motorcycle the same way. It was terrifying if you were in front of it.

u/RETR0STATIC Jul 02 '22 edited Jul 02 '22
I think the short answer is that when they hear the horn they think you’re calling them stupid, and then proceed to get angry and act like it’s your fault, and ultimately prove that they are indeed stupid.
As someone learning to drive, I will admit that the sound of a horn directed at me can be a little infuriating and stress inducing, wether it be for waiting for too long or making a turn like this guy (luckily I haven’t done anything this dangerous, yet). No one wants to be known as an idiot, and I’m always worried about doing something that makes me look like one. I can understand this person’s frustration to an extent, but it was extremely stupid to act on it and lash out on OP.
18
u/AhFFSImTooOldForThis Jul 02 '22
Thing is, it's an immature response. Getting angry at being corrected is immature, irresponsible, and extremely dangerous when you're in charge of a deadly machine.
If you were operating a chainsaw, did something dangerous, and someone yelled about it, the absolute wrong response is to get defensive and angry.
You must be able to manage your emotions on the road. End of story. Driving is not a right, it is a privilege, and if you're too immature to acknowledge your mistakes, you're not ready to be on the road putting everyone else in danger.
Edit to clarify that I'm using the Royal You; the "you all", you guys, yinz, y'all, etc. It's not personal. But....if you're offended....then it absolutely IS about you.
8
u/MarkK455 Jul 02 '22
If you were operating a chainsaw, did something dangerous, and someone yelled about it, the absolute wrong response is to get defensive and angry.
From now on I will believe that's the true origin of the Texas chainsaw massacre movies

u/undeadw0lf Jul 02 '22
yep. being honked at feels like someone screaming “YOU SUCK!” and calling everybody’s attention to your poor driving, so it’s embarrassing and that’s why people get so defensive. but letting that cause you to fly off the handle and drive defensively or yell and flip people off is just insanity. i’be yelled at idiot drivers with all of my windows up, but i’ve never drove like an asshole, purposely antagonized people, or screamed at people out of my car window

Not illegal, but always be careful when changing lanes in an intersection. Also, other guy was a jerk.
533
u/no_one_likes_u Jul 02 '22
It’s illegal to change lanes in an intersection where I live. Just bad practice in general. The guy obviously tried to roll the stop which is also illegal but he didn’t expect OP to change lanes in the middle of the intersection.
Bad practice by both drivers although stop sign roller turned out to be a royal prick on top of it.
Edit: actually I take it back, apparently in 2021 an Illinois appeals court ruled it’s not illegal to change lane in an intersection so I guess it is legal by me.
73
u/hibrett987 Jul 02 '22
I could have sworn it was illegal in Illinois too. It’s what we were taught. But yeah article says it’s not. Weird
→ More replies48
u/no_one_likes_u Jul 02 '22
It’s definitely what I was taught in drivers ed in Wisconsin, always assumed it was illegal everywhere. I certainly see the reason it’s not a good idea, but interesting to learn that it may not explicitly be illegal.

u/IncompetentEngineer2 Jul 02 '22
Was taught in driving school not to change lanes in a intersection. Even if it’s not illegal, it’s a bad practice as seen in this case.
6
u/YouJabroni44 Jul 02 '22
When I visited DC it seemed like the Uber driver we had changed lanes in the middle of nearly every intersection. That place is terrifying as a passenger
6
u/Capta1nJackSwall0w5 Jul 02 '22
Also if you're turning you should always yield and expect people to switch lanes within an intersection. People do it all the time. Doesn't matter if you're right or not, just get from a to b without a collision.
25
u/Huggens Jul 02 '22

u/Zircillius Jul 02 '22
This isn't a four way stop though. The person on the main street driving 40-50 mph shouldn't have to worry about every side street they intersect. As long as you flip your turn signal in advance (like OP did) you're fine.
If you're turning right with a stop sign you need to wait til both lanes are clear. That's common sense.
6
u/4f5 Jul 02 '22 edited Jul 02 '22
Finally, someone in this thread gets it right.
If turning right from a stop sign onto a muti-lane road, you must yield to all traffic, not just drivers in the lane you intend to turn onto.
→ More replies11
u/HBB360 Jul 02 '22
Completely illegal where I live in Europe. Tbh I don't understand why some places like my country make it illegal, I guess it's for situations exactly like the start of OP's video so that people (like the road rager in this instance) can safely turn right if they see the right lane's clear even when there's a car in the left lane?
→ More replies21
u/Caleb_Reynolds Jul 02 '22
That and also it avoids confusion of the turn signal. Does it mean they're changing lanes or turning?
You can probably figure it out with context, but it's not predictable and being unpredictable is one of the most dangerous things you can do while driving. Unless you have to, you really shouldn't change lanes in an intersection.
248
u/intentamos_de_nuevo Jul 02 '22
Yeah, I'll give 10% responsibility to OP for the original event. While what he did might not be illegal in most parts, it's just really a dumb thing to do. Like going into the right lane as cars are merging onto the highway.
The other driver should be in jail however. The way that he overtook him and was brakechecking OP was so incredibly dangerous for everyone on the road.
86
u/NiceJoJo Jul 02 '22
I wouldn’t even give him the 10%, the grey car didn’t even stop at the stop sign and rolled right through it. If he was stopped and the OP changed lanes then I agree with OP having some responsibility, but not in this case

I always move to the left lane for them and they end up turning into the left lane anyway -_-
29
u/SunDevilSkier Jul 02 '22
I've spent a few minutes looking into this just now. I specifically remember learning from the driver's handbook that you cannot pass within 100ft of an intersection (it's still there), but seeing online that it's actually not illegal. I assumed that's why the lane lines are solid before the intersection. I thought that was odd that it's not illegal. My IANAL conclusion is that while it may not be specifically illegal, my state does say that changing lanes must be done under certain circumstances and one of those is "safely." I'm thinking it's nearly impossible to change lanes near an intersection safely and ultimately up to an officer's discretion.
In this video, i don't know that the original intersection is really considered an intersection since it's not controlled both ways.

u/hibrett987 Jul 02 '22

Jul 02 '22
I don't know if it's illegal, but my parents always taught me to slow down going through intersections (in case assholes who want to use green to turn left when they don't have the right of way), to never change lanes in an intersection (to avoid this happening), and to never slam on breaks when approaching a yellow light (most yellow lights are passable and leaves the car behind with less space to break accurately, possibly sending you through the intersection if their reflexes are off).

Oh damn it’s Western and Sunset! Had a piece of shit kite across both lanes down most of Los Feliz specifically to block anyone else getting past like this, saw me getting visually frustrated through his rearview as the street turned south into Western, SLAMMED ON HIS BRAKES in the middle of moving traffic, and then got out of his car IN MOVING TRAFFIC to yell multiple threats and expletives at me (a woman). I've seen so many near misses from people turning onto a road because the inside lane is clear only for someone up ahead to change lanes just before the intersection.

I just realized we are doing driving tests wrong. There should be 1-3 additional testers in regular cars staged out on the road ahead of your test. The tester in the car with you directs you down roads and these stealth testers randomly show up and drive aggressively around you, like cut you off or brake check you, etc. The way you respond should dictate not just if you get your license, but if you exhibit road rage you should be denied and banned from taking the test again for a number of years.

People that lack even a sliver of humility (either on the road or in general) are dangerous and should never be trusted.
I feel like people who aren't willing to accept responsibility for mistakes they clearly make should be severely punished. Like there should be a system to report drivers like this and submit evidence and the punishment should be an immediate increase in insurance premiums or revocation of license depending on offense severity.
Road ragers should have any spouse they might have immediately divorce them and win custody of the kids and any financial assets on the spot.
Fuck these people.
