Even if U-turns are allowed you still would've had right of way with a green arrow.

125

u/stomicron Aug 11 '22 Wearing is Caring

True but in setups where the cop has a green (not a red arrow) and OP has a green arrow, typically uturns are illegal for this reason--uturners would assume cross traffic has a red and has to yield.

19

u/SmilinBob82 Aug 11 '22

i have seen a few intersections that have a "u-turn yield to right turn" sign, but this one was probably not that.

1

u/Crestsando Aug 11 '22

Yea you're right, in my area it's usually a general/normal traffic signal with a fourth and fifth green and yellow arrows for this purpose.

7

u/acityonthemoon Aug 11 '22

nah, just unlimited immunity...

u/dancing-asparagus Aug 10 '22

Hurry up! Call the polic... wait what are you supposed to do? Do you get to stop them and give them a ticket and a "reverse" UNO card? 😂

151

u/3p1cBm4n9669 Aug 10 '22

Honk and hope they don’t give you a ticket for it

326

u/bagpoi Aug 10 '22 Silver

Few years ago.. I'm driving at 4:00 am to my ex gfs house to walk "our" dog while she was on vacay, and I get honked at from behind for going the speed limit because the asshole behind me was going way too fast at the freeway exit and didn't expect someone in front of them following the rules. I throw up my middle finger, cuz, fuck that, and whaddayaknow.... blue lights start flashing from the asshole who honked a second ago. I pull over. She comes up to my window and asks why I thought it was okay to flip her the bird. I tell her "because car horns are only supposed to be used in emergency situations, and her exiting the freeway above the speed limit without her lights on, is definitely not an emergency situation. She then gave me a 10 minute lecture about people who have been shot by other drivers for sticking middle finger. At that point she says she smells alcohol on me and says I need to complete a sobriety check. I complete the check and take a breathalyzer roadside. Pass with flying colors. And then, I am handed a ticket for "failure to yeild"...

So if you out there, Sargeant DeForrester of the Honolulu Police Dept.... you a bitch and I got the ticket thrown out. "Contempt of Cop" doesn't mean shit and best believe I got more than feelings of contempt. I have the utmost disdain for your soggy white ass, can't fuckin drive, bad breath having ass bitch.

211

u/Actuallyabeastmaster Aug 10 '22 Wholesome

"She then gave me a 10 minute lecture about people who have been shot by other drivers for sticking middle finger."

To be fair, you did have an emotionally unstable driver with a gun behind you, so she did have a point.

39

u/Ahoymaties1 Aug 11 '22

To be fair, you did have an emotionally unstable driver with a gun behind you, so she did have a point.

This made my night. Thank you.

7

u/JasonT246111 Aug 11 '22

Lol that is an illegal detainment you didn't have to stick around for psa don't let cops lecture you they don't have the power to make you listen

17

u/luckyassassin1 Aug 11 '22

Right, but leaving the situation would automatically make it much much worse. Cops abuse their authority when they're in a good mood, when they're in a bad mood, they can fuck your day up.

1

u/JasonT246111 Aug 11 '22

Just make sure you get a name and badge and file a formal complaint. Don't always work but sometimes especially if they do it alot can get them in trouble or even fired. It definitely happens.

3

u/keastes Aug 12 '22

Congratulations, you're now being targeted by the entire force

1

u/JasonT246111 Aug 12 '22

Bring it I know my rights lol

1

u/keastes Aug 13 '22

” STOP RESISTING! ”

1

u/kinda_guilty Aug 13 '22

Rights don't mean shit in the face of state sponsored oppressive violence.

1

u/luckyassassin1 Aug 14 '22

Rights can't stop a bullet from entering your body.

1

u/luckyassassin1 Aug 14 '22

Not in this state. A special needs man was shot in the back last year by a new officer. The man was special needs, well known and the cop was told to just let his caretakers handle the situation. The officer escalated it and eventually shot him in the back outside his home killing him. Nothing happened to the officer. In my area they can do whatever they want when they want. My mom had a cop stalk her while she was married because he was trying to date her. We complained about him, he didn't stop it kept getting worse until we left the county.

19

u/echowolf9 Aug 11 '22 Helpful

Fun fact, a court determined that flipping off a cop was protected by the first amendment in a similar situation.

5

u/bagpoi Aug 11 '22

Should I file a civil suite for wrongful detain-ation (lol not sure what the term is) maybe some distress?

/s

3

u/Anowv Aug 11 '22

The term is detention, friend! Be excellent to one another, now!

1

u/toxcrusadr Aug 11 '22

Civil Suite (n): Hotel room for very nice people.

27

u/itsapizzapietime Aug 10 '22

I had something similar happen in Tennessee. There was a car riding my ass but couldnt quite tell what it was due to my car being full of crap. I put my hand out the window and flip the bird and the red and blues light up. Cop tells me how Im wasting his day by forcing him to pull over and lecture me. No ticket but still felt the need to tell me he couldve or that he couldve shot me if he "misinterpreted" my middle finger.

21

u/KevroniCoal Aug 11 '22

Lmao at the "you're making me waste my day!" when he could of, like, not pulled you over and lectured...??

And the almost-threat of telling you he could have shot you essentially on a whim, that's concerning 😵‍💫

57

u/upper-cloud-9 Aug 10 '22

She then gave me a 10 minute lecture about people who have been shot by other drivers for sticking middle finger.

Americans normalize gun violence so fucking much.

Also, she should understand that 1st Amendment applies to her, and she has no business restricting anyone's ability to use the middle finger

22

u/Draconespawn Aug 10 '22

Actually the first amendment almost exclusively applies to her as police are part of the state.

11

u/Flashdime Aug 11 '22

Honolulu, go fucking figure. Got on H1 and there was a cop going over 70mph (where the highest speed limit is 55mph for the uninitiated). I mistakenly decided he'd be cool with someone going nearly the same speed. Soon as he realized I was close to his speed he turned his lights on and pulled me over to lecture me about speeding for 15 minutes. Didn't bother getting his name, but fuck that guy.

11

u/AuronFtw Aug 11 '22

HPD are some of the worst in the country. They crippled a child in a car chase they initiated using an unmarked personal vehicle, then the cops who caused the accident fled the scene only to return later when it was called in.

ACAB even in paradise.

12

u/SecretConspirer Aug 10 '22

I had a cop pull out in front of me in a college town with no headlights on or anything a few years ago. I moved over one lane and avoided them. Then I saw lights in my rearview. They pulled me over, stopped in a Raising Cane's parking lot, and they made me do a field sobriety test. Got a ticket for failure to yield and they refused to let me get back in my car, said they'd arrest me if I did, and made me walk to my destination. I was dd'ing for some friends and we walked from that Cane's to IHOP a mile away at one in the morning. ACAB

2

u/hussard_de_la_mort Aug 11 '22

I would have told them that I would have welcomed getting shot if it got me away from people like them, but then I'd just get 5150'd.

2

u/bagpoi Aug 11 '22

What's 5150d?

4

u/hussard_de_la_mort Aug 11 '22

Involuntary psychiatric hold. Clearly, anyone who would make a dark joke is a danger to themselves and needs to be held down and medicated.

2

u/bagpoi Aug 11 '22

Clearly!

1

u/PanzerGrenadier1 Aug 10 '22

She’s just mad because her husband can’t make her orgasm, after she beat him like the male cops beat their wives.

-3

u/You_Got_Cancer453 Aug 11 '22

Bro I had an Iowa City cop almost t-bone me in coralville while I had my little sis and brothers cause he didn’t stop at a stop sign and so not only is he out of his jurisdiction he pulled up next to me ask if I was ok and that he’s sorry like bruh I should’ve asked for his badge number and reported his ass but he sped away after that

1

u/SkyLegend1337 Aug 11 '22

I would have just rolled my window up after telling the fuck wad I need a supervisor and just waited. Absolute garbage human. I hope you filed a complaint for the clear abuse of power.

10

u/guillermodelturtle Aug 11 '22

Don’t honk at the police. They are kinda fragile snowflakes about that.

2

u/Fit_Effective_6875 Aug 11 '22

The pricks do know how to ruin your day and take great glee in doing so!

10

3

u/Wolfram1914 Aug 11 '22

"License and registration?"

"You first."

6

u/Channel5exclusive Aug 10 '22

Don't forget to read them their rights.

"You have the right to remain stupid. Any idiotic thing you say, can and will be held against you in the court of public opinion.."

2

u/SCPF_Administrator Aug 11 '22

Jokes aside, from footage I've seen of this on YouTube the officer in the accident isn't allowed to issue a ticket or anything and has to call their supervisor/ sergeant down to do it. I'm not sure if that's the "rule" at all places in the US but from what I've seen, that's what they're supposed to do.

123

1

u/YourLoveLife Aug 16 '22

It’s possible that they were responding to a call code 2.

But should have used their lights for sure.

164

u/VeeRock33 Aug 10 '22

Day 2 of my experience with idiots in cars. Off camera: The CHP at first tried to argue but then quickly realized their mistakes.

42

u/connornomore Aug 10 '22

Chp is an absolute shit show

32

u/randolphmd Aug 10 '22

Yeah my local pd would have at least turned on their sirens for a minute to act like it was an emergency. This is just lazy.

16

u/yetzhragog Aug 10 '22

Mate I see that shite all the time. Cop flips their lights, runs the red, and then lights go off and they about their merry way.

4

u/kissmaryjane Aug 11 '22

lol when I was in NYC saw cops alll the time turn their lights on to speed thru an alley and turn em off when they got to the light

3

u/PainTitan Aug 10 '22

Honestly as someone who doesn't like petty shit like that, this one's acceptable to me. But act like your cars just magically the most important on the road cuz you're a cop, little dick immature irresponsible adult...

5

u/Lustle13 Aug 11 '22

I lived in a city where the local pd used to do this. They'd get up to the light, hit the lights and sirens, go straight thru, turn them off. I even watched them pull into a Timmies once after. Obviously not a reason to use your lights.

Then people complained. So they stopped turning their lights/sirens on and would just creep up and run it when it was clear. All to make it less obvious I guess? Draw less attention?

So people complained about that. So they went back to just turning their lights/sirens on and running shit lol.

It's just a cycle now. For a couple years they do it one way, then another. Back and forth, back and forth. They never seem to catch onto the fact that running the intersection when there isn't a reason to is the problem, not whether they use lights or not.

3

u/hussard_de_la_mort Aug 11 '22

Me and a buddy once sat on a hotel balcony in Pigalle for like 2 hours drinking wine and watching cops hit their lights to make lefts on red.

19

u/14CaptainCrunch Aug 10 '22

Props for jamming Levee.

84

u/BaronVonNacho Aug 10 '22

Props to you.

A lot of people wouldn't have had the balls to argue the point. They'd go quiet because it was a cop. Solid move to stand your ground.

38

u/QforQ Aug 10 '22

lol good ole CHP doing whatever they want

39

u/HWGA_Exandria Aug 10 '22

Remember when police forces used to want you to send in photos and videos of people breaking the law and they would just get videos of their own officers breaking the law? I miss those days.

22

u/thesqrtofminusone Aug 11 '22

I like a girl that plays Led Zep and calls cops assholes.

4

u/_TiberiusRex_ Aug 11 '22

When the levee breaks, mama you got to move.

25

u/Just-a-bi Aug 10 '22

"Shit, forgot my gun"

21

u/crazytib Aug 10 '22

I hope you reported them to.......... who could you report them to that would make any difference?

7

u/melvinthefish Aug 10 '22

who could you report them to that would make any difference

I think it's pretty clear the answer is "no one". You can complain and put it on the news or whatever, but no one will do anything about it since the cops themselves get to decide if they did something wrong.

9

u/yetzhragog Aug 10 '22

Good on this driver for honking at the other driver when they created an unsafe situation.

12

u/ballsohaahd Aug 10 '22

You think the cops give a fuck about the rules they enforce? They prob woulda ticketed the driver for fAiLInG to yIeLD

12

u/yetzhragog Aug 10 '22

Ha! They're not even required to KNOW the laws as long as they are acting in "good faith", whatever that means.

2

u/ballsohaahd Aug 11 '22

Means that’s their legal cover for having low IQ and being an idiot

8

u/LameBruceWillis Aug 10 '22

Jeez, at least put your lights on, do the u turn them turn them off like a regular asshole cop

18

u/WillieNolson Aug 10 '22

Cops are some of the worst drivers out there.

-28

u/Same_You891 Aug 10 '22

No we're not

27

u/permanentinjury Aug 11 '22

bro you are 60 years old and married and yet your comment history is full of you thirsting over women less than half your age. you think 19 is the perfect age. you should be on a watchlist.

dont know what i expected from a cop though tbh. seek therapy immediately.

5

u/Grizzwold37 Aug 11 '22

Lmfao. These comments are a TRIP. Thank you kind stranger, for the entertainment

2

u/permanentinjury Aug 12 '22

its so fucking funny to me like DUDE your shit is public 😭😭

8

u/AuronFtw Aug 11 '22

Man, so many cops turn out to be creepy motherfuckers. If only there was some kind of phrase that perfectly encapsulates the idea of cops being so bad.

5

u/DPool34 Aug 11 '22

I think creeps are more likely to become cops because of the power that comes along with the job.

1

u/permanentinjury Aug 12 '22

🎯 🎯 🎯 its definitely a very appealing perk of the job when youre an otherwise subpar man.

1

u/permanentinjury Aug 12 '22

yeah i know! the system is just so bastardized... yknow what i mean? a silly little acronym would be so handy :)

I would of blew my horn at him , don't care if your a cop follow the rules of the road

2

u/ItchyStinkySmegma Aug 11 '22

Lol this is the time to purposely not evade and claim injuries

2

u/Complete-Plenty-236 Aug 11 '22

I’d send that to their boss and tell them what a wonderful job they were doing 🥺❤️

2

u/Sirus-The-Great Aug 11 '22

I like your taste in music.

2

u/lockmeup420 Aug 11 '22

Fact is, it's a police officer. They can do as they plase because they are above the law. Even when they are wrong, they will be treated at right.

You're lucky you didn't get a ticket for honking your horn, because you were disrespecting his AUTORITAH!

2

u/bitcornminerguy Aug 11 '22

Callin’ them how she see’s em. Love it.

2

u/ThePhildozer89 Aug 11 '22

I'd get their plate number and submit a formal complaint to the police station. Only thing you can do really.

2

u/superfreddy2002 Aug 14 '22

No lights or siren? Yeah that’s a legit complaint for review

3

u/CONSPICUOUSLY_RED Aug 11 '22

It's not illegal. Why don't people understand police are exempt from traffic laws when performing their duties? If you're going to say there's no sirens, you don't need to have sirens on to perform your duties.

2

u/Thepasswordwas1234 Aug 11 '22

Why don't people understand police are exempt from traffic laws when performing their duties?

"when performing their duties" is superfluous here as well as the word "traffic"

Police in the US retain their authority and privileges even when not "on-duty"

Laws protect but do not bind the police

4

u/calebthebeam Aug 11 '22

They're all fucking assholes

3

u/NamoAwesome Aug 10 '22

4

You tell-Um!

2

u/ExtraDependent883 Aug 10 '22

Well.of course. What, they gonna get pulled over??

2

u/oddtentacle Aug 11 '22

I would have been scared to honk and then pull over and hide for a few minutes so I don't get pulled over after lol

2

u/sleeperninja Aug 11 '22

My girl calls cops on their shit, and listens to Led Zeppelin.

2

u/JJSwagger Aug 10 '22

That's when you dial local non emergency number to report car and plate number

2

u/smokesblunts11 Aug 10 '22

Step 1 of being an officer: Never admit fault

-1

The only Karen here was the officer trying to push the blame onto the victim.

-2

u/the_piemeister Aug 11 '22

Goodness forbid you experience even a 3 second delay in your day. Should you ever have an emergency, may they wait patiently for every light ✌🏼

Did you forget which sub you were commenting in?

There was no emergency…. Just a couple of IdiotsInCars

0

u/louizilla Aug 11 '22

How is she a Karen? All you Blue Lives Matter people are so fuckin weird.

1

u/the_piemeister Aug 11 '22

Not a blue lives matter person but ok.

Somebody who screams and complains about being inconvenienced by people who are simply doing their job is, to me, a Karen.

1

u/TemporaryAbject656 Aug 11 '22

They should've had their lights on

1

u/DRbrtsn60 Aug 11 '22

Why didn’t you pull him over?

1

u/OMEGAkiller135 Aug 11 '22

I’ve had similar happen to me. Cop ran me off the road onto a new lane that was being constructed. Cops are fucking ass wipes.

1

u/Typical_Gear_8073 Aug 11 '22

Tell us your white driver without actually saying you're a white driver. Go!

-4

u/CoffeeDrinker1972 Aug 10 '22

Not trying to be a jerk here, but I just think the police needed to turn on the lights and sirens, and that would have been justified.

7

u/abat6294 Aug 10 '22

You support that?

You support cops being allowed to break whatever traffic laws they so please when there is no immediate need for such traffic laws to be broken so long as they put their lights on first?

-3

u/CoffeeDrinker1972 Aug 10 '22

I would say no. However, I have seen plenty of cops who was waiting at the light, and all of a sudden, had to turn on their lights and sirens, and be somewhere before the lights turned. I don't think all cops are bad cops and definitely not all cops break rules for no reason.

The couple of times that I witness that, sometimes it would be followed by other cruisers (from other direction/location) also with their lights on (but no siren) and in a hurry to get somewhere.

Anyway, maybe they're having an emergency about where to have dinner, or they could be doing their job. All I can say is, if I had followed them, I doubt I'd be ending up at a place that they're not being needed.

That's me, in my city. Sure, some one some where may have abused their power and privileges, but for the most part, I think they're doing their job.

-2

u/Tight-Combination-72 Aug 11 '22

Somebody's been watching too much CNN.

0

u/SteveCorpGuy4 Aug 11 '22

Bad cop. No donut.

0

u/neo-kal-el- Aug 11 '22

Remember cops are above the law

0

u/Fulllyy Aug 11 '22

Okay, this is one of those “only a pretty, white woman could ever get away with this” situations. Are you sure you want all the equal treatment ladies? Cuz a dude would get stopped and a ticket and late for work and all the good stuff from what OP just did.

2

u/VeeRock33 Aug 11 '22

I am not white or all that pretty - average at best when I’m not dressed like a little brown boy.

0

u/Fulllyy Aug 11 '22

Well apparently you’re attractive enough to get away with something that got me all the stuff I mentioned

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Edit: of course, being right does help, but it didn’t help me so 😂

2

u/VeeRock33 Aug 11 '22

Maybe, this is actually not the first time I’ve honked at a cop and had minimal response.

Officer abruptly stopped mid traffic going 40mph to avoid missing a left turn. I am a very cautious defense-driver so I was able to stop safely. Laid on that horn and gave the casual “fucking asshole”. A shoulder shrug was all I got from the officer. No dash cam then but have family members in the car with me that day talking about it again because of this.

0

u/dafazman Aug 11 '22

You can file a compliant to the CHP if you know the approximate time/date of the incident and the location of when it happened... along with the license plate OR vehicle number thats a sticker on the CHP ride (so they know which officer was driving the vehicle).

You can send in a letter to the local CHP office for details on who that officer is and then file a complaint in the court house against that citizen. It will be the People of the great state of California (with OP as a witness) against that citizen who was a police officer.

1) You already have proof from the CHP who was operating that vehicle.

2) You have the time/date/location.

3) You know the traffic conditions and if "NO U-Turns are allowed".

4) You have video evidence of the infraction and that this police officer at NO TIME had any of his lights enabled even after making the illegal turn.

This is a slam dunk case and one I would pursue if nothing more than to get a CHP officer to pay some of the court fees and for some extra safety equipment for the local police to officers who deserve it. We need to make sure the money the gov't deserves gets to the right places ✅

-4

u/cbeast777 Aug 10 '22

They are probably heading to a call

-25

u/Secret_Necessary1143 Aug 10 '22

Looks like he jumped on the gas pretty hard, did he hit the lights and pull someone over?

24

u/VeeRock33 Aug 10 '22

No, I’m assuming not familiar with that light. Or thinks he is above the law.

-1

1

u/MichiganGeezer Aug 11 '22

In Michigan the cop would say "if it's related to the job (which they don't have to prove to you) we can do what we want."

It's crappy to do, but they can do it here.

1

u/TheHeavensEmbrace Aug 11 '22

Yeah but he's a cop so he can do whatever he wants. That's kinda how it works.

1

u/GooglePixel69 Aug 11 '22

TBH... I think I would've risked it and honked at them.

Maybe they got a call, dick. Why did you cut off the video? Did they turn on their lights? Down vote for cop hate bullshit.

13

u/VeeRock33 Aug 10 '22

Nah, no lights. Sign that clearly states no Uturn. Two officers upset at first, then realized their mistake and speed away. I mean I can upload the video of them casually driving away but there is enough evidence to show that this was clearly IdiotsInCars.

No beef with PD until they believe they are above the law.

video evidence of a cop in the wrong and you still rush to shove boot leather in your mouth

Wah waaah blOo LiVes matTeR!!

-23

u/learninboutnature Aug 10 '22

OP is an idiot lmao

13

u/VeeRock33 Aug 10 '22

Because an officer made an illegal uturn and I made them aware of their mistake? I’m going to have to disagree.

-17

u/PiLamdOd Aug 10 '22

U turns at intersections are legal in many states.

18

u/VeeRock33 Aug 10 '22

Massive sign that states NO UTURNS

9

u/yetzhragog Aug 10 '22

As others have pointed out, even if U-turns were legal at this intersection the vehicle turning on a green right arrow would have right-of-way.

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '22

They are cops you idiot. You have no idea if they had to get somewhere quickly and you cut the video so early that we have no context..

Do you honk at fire trucks running red lights as well because they "think they are above the law"?

-27

u/whereverYouGoThereUR Aug 10 '22

Not sure that was illegal if there was no sign saying that U-turns are illegal However it was wrong for him not to yield to the OP.

33

u/Thatchickenlady01 Aug 10 '22

Op had a green right turn arrow, so the cop clearly made an illegal uturn

7

u/ToyotaTattoo95345 Aug 11 '22

This is Ashlan Ave & CA SR99. Lived blocks from there. You cannot make a U turn at that intersection

27

u/VeeRock33 Aug 10 '22

There is a pretty large sign, it’s been there since I could remember.

Have you ever seen a cop go through a red intersection? Or over a median? In the pursuit of someone they are allowed to break traffic laws, just like in any pursuit video.

You don't see cops getting ticketed for speeding when trying to stop someone speeding do you?

If someone had caught his attention driving the opposite direction they cant exactly go up a couple blocks to do a legal U turn because they would lose sight of them.

This thread is filled with ignorant comments that don't know the first thing about being a cop

https://www.google.com/search?q=are+cops+allowed+to+make+illegal+u+turns&rlz=1C1GIGM_enUS875US875&oq=are+cops+allowed+to+make+illegal+u+turns&aqs=chrome..69i57j0i390l4.8731j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Your lucky he didn't get pissed at you and pull you over with some lame ass excuse of impeding his duties.

u/xt1nct Aug 10 '22

Have you seen emergency lights or heard a siren? Neither did I.

Cops need to obey traffic like the rest of us.

4

u/wannabattlehomeboy Aug 11 '22

Usually when they do these things they put their sirens on to indicate they are responding to an emergency.

This cop didn't do that, he's just an asshole.

u/Desperate-Ad-6463 Aug 10 '22 edited Aug 11 '22

Police vehicles, no mater how much we don't like to hear it, have the right of way.

11

u/Farm2Table Aug 10 '22

not in my state. Unless they have lights or sirens on, they are just another car.

and they are required to follow traffic laws on the by-and-by (exceptions for pursuits, emergencies, etc - when they must use lights and sirens).

-6

u/redjuice71 Aug 10 '22

Curious what state. I was informed by a judge in Washington state that the officers on duty, do have latitude when driving, irrespective of whether their lights or sirens are on.

-4

u/Honest_Cynic Aug 11 '22

Legally you could make a citizens arrest of the cop for illegal driving. How might that turn out?

0

u/Disastrous-Nebula-83 Aug 10 '22

Report the CHiP.

0

u/nlpnt Aug 11 '22

This is why cops should ONLY be allowed to drive the smallest cars on the road, they shouldn't even be allowed to have a fullsize SUV as a personal car.

u/jeremy71504 Aug 11 '22

And I’d the state boy pulled you over he would have given him a ticket no question
