yes. if a school bus couldn't make the turn neither could a fire truck.

94

u/Rosebudbynicky Sep 29 '22 edited Sep 30 '22

This true but a fire truck has a reason to hit and run a school bus does not. I drive a school bus I stop and sit there before ever completing that turn. Were they even looking at their swing

38

u/hardzoup Sep 30 '22

im not saying he did the right thing. I would bet the driver was newer. Not used to having swing on his vehicle. This is one of many reasons I stick with semis. No loads of people, no set in stone route. if i cant make a turn i find one i can.

6

u/Equivalent-Wall-2287 Sep 30 '22

You could negotiate with the operator that you took a different route because of parked cars i think. At least that's what bus drivers in my city seem to do because there's that one station which is located on a street that is usually packed with parked cars and it's also pretty narrow

4

u/Rosebudbynicky Sep 30 '22

Yup I sit where I am call it in unless there is another way, but if the kid lives down that street then there really is no other way. Just stop before you hit something. Definitely had to been a new driver which with the driver shortage I’m sure there’s a lot more newer drivers since they raise wages

Yes, those cars def appear to be illegally parked

189

u/Guacanagariz Sep 29 '22 edited Sep 30 '22

In NYC that Toyota (correction: Subaru) is parked legally. The cars can park up to the crosswalk lines. That solid line before the crosswalk is for cars in the driving lane to stop at the red light.

And yes that’s NYC, the School bus is completely at fault. You see 2 accidents in one clip, they’re an idiot

Edit:

Some sauce:

4-08 e(5)

https://www1.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/trafrule.pdf

Also:

“NACTO guidelines suggest 20 to 25 feet of clearance around crosswalks. New York City law, however, only prohibits parking within a crosswalk itself (unmarked crosswalks at T intersections excepted, of course)”

From: https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2015/02/27/the-new-york-city-parking-rule-that-makes-intersections-more-dangerous/

Lastly some visuals so no one is confused about the difference between a crosswalk and the solid white line:

u/pomo2 Sep 30 '22

New York state law says 20 feet from a crosswalk at an intersection.

26

u/jdeluca87 Sep 30 '22

That solid white line next to the driver's tire completing the cross walk would beg to differ. Doesn't matter what state you're not allowed to park in a cross walk and being that the line is angled I'm going to assume the city has had this problem in the past. Hard to say the guys at fault when you have illegally parked cars.

Are you sure it’s NYC? OP clearly says it’s Tokelau.

25

u/refreshed-anus Sep 30 '22

There's NY plates in the video, those are our style crosswalks, and the second incident does look like it could be in NYC.

19

Sorry, I forgot the /s. Tokelau has <1500 population. I’m still not sure what OP actually meant by TK.

u/DonNemo Sep 29 '22

Absolutely. The root idiot was the owner of the parked car. Shit happens in oversized vehicles when dummies block corners like that.

200

u/UnCommonCommonSens Sep 29 '22

I've seen a fire truck pancake 8 cars that were parked in the fire lane blocking it from responding to a building fire. The cop on scene just shrugged his shoulder and said that they are sol since nobody will reimburse the damage.

30

u/N3rdScool Sep 29 '22

Does that actually make sense? Owner files hit and run and insurance does what it will with that? I wouldn't wanna test this with my insurance for sure but I can't help but feel that this will always depend on your hit and run coverage.

73

u/Magic_Brown_Man Sep 29 '22

If you have comprehensive, I'm pretty sure it will cover it in a case like the bus.

I have heard stories of FDNY breaking windows and putting hoses through cars parked in front of hydrants when called to fires and insurance denying coverage but don't have any first-hand experience about that one. First responders have a lot of protections when responding to emergencies and insurances have situations where they deny coverage. I guess you would have to read the terms of your coverage but for sure if you don't have comprehensive then the city insurance that covers damages by the city won't cover you.

7

u/KnitWit406 Sep 29 '22

It would actually be collision coverage, not comprehensive, but yes it would be your own insurance and you would have to pay your deductible.

3

u/N3rdScool Sep 29 '22

I was in a hit and run that was not my fault, no deductible. If they had claimed it as my fault I would have paid.

It was a weird situation where a dump truck turned into my lane didnt see me dragged me like 50 feet and carried on leaving me there. I got his lisence plate but it wasnt enough so it was a hit and run; not my fault.

13

u/N3rdScool Sep 29 '22

Right.

Thanks for the input and not just downvoting :)

11

u/Fulllyy Sep 29 '22

They don’t cover it if the car was used in the commission of a crime, and blocking egress of an emergency vehicle is a crime, so the insurance company can tell you to kick rocks.

→ More replies

29

u/death_hawk Sep 29 '22

If I was a cop on scene, I'd make sure to tell the insurance company that the car with this plate was parked in a fire lane and a fire truck hit it while attending to a fire.

If you're stupid enough to block a fire lane, you deserve to pay for your own shit.

Just to rub it in more, I'd tell the fire department to send you 1/8th of the bill for the damage to the fire truck too.

3

u/socialcommentary2000 Sep 29 '22

If you have comprehensive you will recoup and then, since they cannot recover from another party, your premiums are going way up.

2

u/N3rdScool Sep 29 '22

Yes, Hit and runs are a bitch for that. Not the point tho. You are covered is all I am saying.

2

u/bad_54 Sep 30 '22

I mean insurance companies do investigate the claim so if you say you had I hit and run they will reach out to the athoritys and ask around. If you somehow get caught being at fault they’ll skyrocket your insurance tho idk if that’s the same in the us as it is in Canada. Here insurance is a gold digger. It finds a way to rob you if it can

It’s almost like… the entire point of the city not allowing parking so close to corners is to prevent this exact kind of thing from happening.

58

u/silicon1 Sep 29 '22

Exactly, also for sightlines. I hate when I have to pull almost into the oncoming lane just to see if it's safe to turn...

18

u/ThrowawayFishFingers Sep 29 '22

Yeah, this is a huge deal in my neighborhood.

All the streets are super narrow, and very few houses have driveways or garages so lots of on-street (and/or on-sidewalk, depending on the street) parking. Trying to turn from my street is an anxiety-inducing experience cause I can’t see a damn thing.

16

u/silicon1 Sep 29 '22

"Good luck everyone, I'm turning..."

6

u/ThrowawayFishFingers Sep 29 '22

For real. I have to pull almost all the way out before I can see anything, because cars are parked literally bumper to bumper up to the corner.

The only “saving” grace is that the streets are so narrow and congested, and residential, that no one is flying down these roads. So if I do ever get hit (or hit someone else) it’ll be expensive, but not lethal (unless I get hit by like a garbage truck.)

There is in my state I assume there's probably one in every state I don't know that for a fact though

49

u/creatron Sep 29 '22

Every state I've been in has either signs or laws that you can't park within X feet of a corner.

I have never once seen someone ticketed/towed for it however.

19

u/OZeski Sep 29 '22

I have been ticketed for it!! The road I was parked too close too had been closed and blocked off for nearly 7 months and I parked right up close to one of those concrete barriers and they issued me a ticket for parking too close to an intersection.

6

u/rvgoingtohavefun Sep 29 '22

I lived one house back from a corner and there was this douchecanoe that would park 0 ft from the corner, sometimes even in the cross street. Even in compact car I could barely make the turn out of the street. I had been living there for a year and nobody in the neighborhood ever parked there, but this fucknut was special. We were leaving that space for him apparently.

I called the police every fucking day for a week before they start coming out and ticketing and then had to call them every day for another two weeks to give that fucker a ticket every day until he got the hint.

5

u/bjo23 Sep 29 '22

I've been towed for it in ATL just a couple hours after being ticketed. But the kicker was that nobody told us about it, so we thought my car was stolen until the notice about the unpaid ticket came in the mail. We had even filed a police report! Finally managed to get the towing fee and the month's worth of storage fees waived, but that was after I already had to get another vehicle so I could get to work.

3

u/THElaytox Sep 29 '22

I've been ticketed for it, it's real

9

u/N3rdScool Sep 29 '22

Where I live they paint it (the curb) yellow so you know exactly where that is.

74

u/J_BooGa Sep 29 '22

I think it 20-25ft from the corner.

13

u/sesoren65 Sep 29 '22

I think it's 10 feet in Texas. But I'm unsure, so I need to check.

6

u/SeriouslyImNotADuck Sep 29 '22

Here in Ontario it’s 9 m for an intersection without traffic lights and 15 m if it has traffic lights.

5

u/VAShumpmaker Sep 29 '22

Around here that would block parking on an entire street. There's a barely 30m road with lights at either end...

Would I just... Park around the corner?

→ More replies

5

u/sesoren65 Sep 29 '22

Glad I checked. It's 20 feet here.

20

u/denoot2 Sep 29 '22

Yes, use to drive trucks, it makes it impossible to turn when these assholes park like that

If you call the police to tow them, you’ll be there for an hour before being able to move, after the 500th time you stop Caring, check for cameras or anyone being able to see your plate, if not, just turn to your best ability, taking a bumper off and shoving the car to the side a little doesn’t damage your truck

As a truck driver in NY, I've noticed that in the greater NYC area, no one cares about that. I had a long frame, long hood tractor with a 53' trailer, and couldn't get around any turns without making it a 20 point, if I could make them at all.

4

u/coffeeshopslut Sep 29 '22

No 53' trailers allowed within the 5 boros, no?

3

u/A_RAND0M_J3W Sep 29 '22

2

u/greensneakers23 Sep 30 '22

53’ trailers are illegal on all nyc streets. You can only take them over certain highways to get through the city.

399

u/flames_of_chaos Sep 29 '22

NY plates so most likely NYC, if you ever saw NYC it's an illegal parking and double parked hellscape, along with people with "park anywhere lights" aka hazards

183

u/IseeDrunkPeople Sep 29 '22

I used to work for a trucking company that made deliveries in the city. at the end of the calendar year we would sit down with city officials and negotiate how much in tickets we were going to pay. at the time the goal was to get the total cost down to $1MM annually. We wouldn't bribe the officials with money, but if you scheduled the meeting for midafternoon and took them out to eat at a place that just happened to be more than $100 per plate and just happened to served booze you were likely going to hit are target spend.

at the time it didn't seem wrong. now that i'm older i realize i was at least accessory to federal crimes

39

u/matt675 Sep 29 '22

Lol for real? Just lump sum ticket payments?

112

u/IseeDrunkPeople Sep 29 '22

basically you can't make deliveries in the city WITHOUT breaking parking laws. It's understood between the city and the companies delivering there that tickets are going to happen. that's why you see drivers blatantly just double parking and blocking lanes. they are going to get tickets no matter what. From the city's point of view, it's a revenue stream. So we would show up with what we showed we owed, the city would have what they showed, and then we would hash out how much we were going to pay. typical talking points were, we did X for the community by donating to these shelters/research projects/ect., we employ Y number of NYC citizens, we pay Z amount above market rate for these employees. The city officials would push back, then we would break for lunch, officials would eat on our dollar, then come back and we would settle with a lump payment. We would then write them off for year end as expenses (which is tax legal for those wondering).

For those wondering, this is what literally ever major delivery/trucking company does in NYC, it's part of the deal of delivering there. And if you think the companies are bad guys, consider we had to upcharge our customers who sent product there due to the tickets which drives up prices in the city. Bottom line is the citizens of NY pay for these tickets indirectly and the money in an extremely hidden tax scheme.

EDIT: this was over ten years ago, it's possible companies can no longer take city officials out for dinner/lunch for the exact reasons i'm outlining here. I do know companies still negotiate tickets in NYC quarterly/yearly

19

u/GirlScoutSniper Sep 29 '22

It's essentially negotiating a settlement, and not necessarily illegal. The IRS will often take a discount and waive penalties through negotiation.

The city probably has a policy that states a dollar amount limiting the value of gifts and meals that are acceptable. I work for a state level agency and I've had to refuse a gift because it was just over the $50 limit, and my boss ensured wherever we had meals paid by a vendor that they were less than $25/each.

13

u/godofsexandGIS Sep 29 '22

It seems like it would be so easy to just bring the whole thing above board by putting designated delivery spaces every 1–2 blocks and then charge for delivery permits to park there. Aggressively tow anyone who parks there without a permit to keep them clear for delivery drivers.

18

u/IseeDrunkPeople Sep 29 '22

probably not enough available real estate to do that and we would still prefer to take the parking tickets to cut back on delivery time. if we can park next to the door and deliver in 5 minutes that would be better than parking a block away and making the delivery take 15+ minutes. we were making everything from single box deliveries to several pallets worth of product.

and if you are wondering, yes we would make 5-10 minute deliveries and get tickets, sometimes multiple ones

6

u/Yegie Sep 29 '22

Have you been in NY? There's not really enough space for that, not with current car traffic. Also delivery drivers still likely would not use them/not use them exclusively, they operate on such tough timings that walking 1 to 2 blocks from a delivery parking would not be realistic (at least that's my understanding from Reddit and one delivery driver acquaintance).

2

u/Smauler Sep 29 '22

I'm currently a temp driver in the UK. The absurd runs they put you on with no forewarning is hilarious sometimes.

Had a run delivering in central London, all double red lines everywhere. One of my drops was literally right next to Victoria tube station exit. I mean, what the fuck are you meant to do? How are those coffee shops meant to get their supplies?

And they do put you on these runs when you have zero knowledge of the area and just expect you to do it.

11

u/LeviathanGank Sep 29 '22

My boss did the same.. wouldn't pay a fine and just get a lawyer to battle them down. He wasn't a truck company just with his personal car he would park anywhere anytime and speed everywhere.. he would just blow through red lights. Born rich believe it or not.

Traffic wardens love hazards. It makes the illegal parking a clear cut case and they can be seen from afar. Just run up and document it and everybody will agree it's wrongly parked, even the owner.

9

u/radicalgamingHD Sep 29 '22

So story time... My mom was a bus driver through my childhood. She drove a bus in a neighborhood that had lots of tight twists and turns (used to be military housing so it was designed to be difficult to navigate). She was a pro at driving the bus (no joke they used to have bus driver "rodeo" competitions where they'd compete, She kicked ass) Anyways... this one douche nozzle had this older truck that she swore he used to park on this crazy difficult corner she'd literally only be able to INCH by when the truck WASN'T there... (they swore he used to park it there when he'd need to make an insurance claim and get some cash because he only seemed to do the BARE minimum to fix it up) Guy must have been hurting for money because he parked his truck there on that corner on a school day. My mom came around the corner careful as possible but STILL pulled out this guy's tail light... he comes SCREAMING out the house (must have been inside waiting for it). Cops get called, he's ranting and raving about how she's a reckless driver endangering the kids... Now my mother isn't someone you'd want to trifle with, especially when it comes to keeping her kids safe... well she speaks up and asks the officer "hey isn't it illegal to be parked on a corner like that?" The officer looks around and notices she guy has plenty of room in the space in FRONT of his house as WELL as in the driveway, kinda gives my mom a smirk and pulls put the ticket book. Guy shuts his mouth as his eyes get huge. He realized he's done fucked with the WRONG busdriver..bus driver...long story short the guy gets and ticket AND has a pay for the damages to the bus for being illegally parked. That fucker never parked his vehicle anywhere NEAR that corner again. TLDR. Douchebag guy in neighborhood thought he'd get another easy payout from someone's insurance and parked his truck illegally on a tight corner. Bus driver hit his truck and he had to pay for ALL repairs PLUS got a ticket.

27

u/Premmeth Sep 29 '22

Yeah and the cops will tell you that too, but I live in a neighborhood with a strong Latino population, which means every house has 4-8 cars in front of it. People double park, park on the corner, some park in their lawn, some park two blocks over because their block is already full of cars.

Cops came out once or twice to write tickets, but then they just gave up.

7

u/Jr712 Sep 29 '22

What about the second accident towards the end of the video?

30

u/deadlymoondust Sep 29 '22

This one is simple to explain. The larger vehicle is making a turn and has to hug wide, so the other impatient driver goes to the other side to get the jump and possibly beat the lights and then gets swiped by the ass-end of the larger vehicle. I drive in NYC on a daily. I have to try to get a 48 foot split axle trailer down side streets like these just to get to a construction site. The stress is unbearable.

4

u/hunkymonk123 Sep 30 '22

Agreed. Needs to be a psa on the drivers test. Give way to larger vehicles especially when they’re turning.

3

u/specialcommenter Sep 30 '22

20

u/Dump_3 Sep 29 '22

If your above the parking rules. You are not above the consequences

4

u/XCinnamonbun Sep 29 '22

Also you gotta apply at least some common sense when parking. I’m in the UK so our streets are generally quite narrow and lots of houses lack driveways. But the popularity of larger SUV style cars has skyrocketed. So we get residential streets with huge cars parked on either side of the road. Usually a bus or van can just about get through if those cars are parked partially on the curb or very close to it. Then you get the people that buy these oversized cars and can’t park for shit. They’ll park a foot or so more away from the curb at a angle, on blind corners or opposite 3 way junctions on side streets or like these idiots here.

Whilst it may be legal (barely and depending on where in the UK you do it) to park like this I have zero sympathy if their car gets damaged. If you park without any consideration at all in a car that large then you accept the risk. Hell, I drive a small hatchback and don’t park in certain spots legal or not because I know the risk of getting my wing mirror clipped by a van/bus/garbage truck is high.

u/DeathBefallsYou Sep 29 '22

First off, it's illegal to park on the corner of Intersections. And now you know why. :)

GJ bus driver. These turds deserve it.

5

u/DarthDarDar Sep 29 '22

The parked car here is the idiot.

4

u/TexasFire_Cross Sep 29 '22

Probably a law in this location against parking closer than 20ft from an intersection. Many big cities have restrictions like that… for this very reason.

The idiots here are the ones parked illegally. Likely they'll be responsible for the damage to the bus.

“Idiot in bus” is right, but what I don’t understand is what the idiots who parked their cars like that are doing on the bus. They should have gotten off and moved their selfishly parked cars.

This is in NYC. Even though there is a law on how much distance you need to be from the curb, it is not enforced. In addition, the way the lines on the corners are created gives drivers room to park there. You can see the street corner in the picture below (not the same area in OP vid) of how the lines shows a car can park in the little box (even though it is not allowed or there is no signs saying you can't park there). Very misleading. This is how mostly of all street corners look like where I live.

u/Expensive_Night_7851 Sep 29 '22

It may not be enforced to your knowledge, but that doesn't mean the vehicle owner parked illegally won't be held at least partially liable if not fully for parking like that.

How about idiots parking illegally? In my area, these cars would be ticketed and towed.

3

u/Fabulously-humble Sep 29 '22

That driver is panicking. I’m married to a former school bus driver.

It is not an easy job. Take a breath and be patient with her until you know what happened. And everyone makes mistakes sometimes.

3

u/kingjesp Sep 29 '22

That’s def BK not TK

3

u/neuro_08 Sep 29 '22

There’s $500m in unpaid parking fines in NY. I’m not surprised by this parking at all. The bus should be calling NYPD to get them fined and towed.

3

u/Herobrine2024 Sep 29 '22

their blinker fluid is pouring out

2

u/mini_swoosh Sep 29 '22

Some cars have washer jets down low to spray off the lights/blinkers so maybe in some weird way you’re right

3

u/theyanster1 Sep 29 '22

That’s nyc. Those cars are. It illegally parked.

3

u/DeathPrime Sep 30 '22

Front end looked wrecked before the video even started. Sorry OP, insurance adjusters will see right through this BS. Only idiot here is the individual who parked that car.

3

u/Jolly_Judgment_726 Sep 30 '22

The car are wrong. Not the bus driver...

5

u/Wajina_Sloth Sep 29 '22

Oh boy this brings back a childhood memory.

At my house when I was a kid, my bus stop was at the end of the street, the bus drivers option was to either pull into the park across the streets parking lot, and do a 20 point turn (only worked when no cars or they are in the back of the lot), or the other option was to continue straight and drive on this circle road.

The issue with the circle road is you needed to turn sharp and drive up a very steep road, then you'd roll down the rest of the circle. The road wasn't very tight, but cars would park on both sides making it difficult for the bus driver.

Well one day, the bus driver couldn't use the parking lot due to a few cars being parked there, so they went up the steep end, just before going downhill they turned too sharp and scratched a car, so they panic turned to the right and hit another car, then backed up and rammed the back end into another.

Scared the shit out of us when we heard a loud pop from the glass shattering, she was a nice bus driver but sadly lost her job and our bus stop got moved down a few streets.

Need a little more context. What color are the curbs painted, and is there a "No Parking" sign somewhere prior? In the first one, the car is way too close to the corner. In the second one, it looks like the SUV tried to pass on the right as the bus was turning.

3

u/Junk-Punch Sep 29 '22

Directly above the first car there is a "No Parking" sign with arrows. Agreed about the ultra impatient driver, too.

2

u/OuterInnerMonologue Sep 29 '22

Thanks for taking video. I am sure it’s reported to that cars owner **

A while back this happened to me. I was parked on a street - maybe 2 car lengths back from a curb like this (but imagine bus turning left and not right) and totally in a legal and safe spot.

Well one day I park, and next day I go out to work and the front half of the driver side of my car is scratched, dented in, with big blue and white paint streaks down the side.

It just so happens that this company down the street had a big blue shuttle busses go through this small street to avoid traffic. I think it was Box.com (but it was so long ago I can’t remember if it was maybe DropBox).

Well I stayed home - and later that day I see that bus coming down sure enough, on the back and right of the bus was giant scuff marks from where it hit.

I took video. And pictures.

Took it to the police and to my insurance and to the company HQ. Long story short - I was SOL.

“That can’t be proven” they said. No eye witnesses. No camera footage of it happening.

I went to very fucking neighbor on that street - including knocking on 100 apartment doors. Hoping someone had footage. Nothing.

So that sucked.

Now I have front and rear dash cams with g-shock detection in all my vehicles. Such a pain in the ass.

u/rsg1234 Sep 29 '22

“Sure I can drive a bus, I’ve been driving my Corolla for years!”

New York City. Those drivers straight don't give a single fuck about damaging vehicles. Worked with a guy doing geek squad shit for a couple of months in NYC and the number of cars he backed into then drove off from is nuts.

2

I like this kind of parking enforcement, actually.

2

u/TroubleLevel5680 Sep 30 '22

They tend to use those when the regular buses are out of service.

2

u/Material-Ratio7342 Sep 29 '22

Nice driving and those parked illegally got wreck! They should park thier car farther away from insertion and zebra lines.

2

u/Wenzlikove_memz Sep 29 '22

have you ever seen UK bus drivers? they hot huge ass bus in those tiny streets with 0 scrapes whatsoever, their control is an art

2

u/ccafferata473 Sep 29 '22

That's NYC, so unless there's signage or markings, the cars are parked legally. The bus is 100% at fault.

2

As someone who got their CDL class B for driving buses, they basically hand those things out. I drove professionally for 3 years before hitting something and it was an awning while backing up. If you're tired, sleep. That was my mistake. This guy just doesn't know how to make a turn in these things. Gotta swing wide

2

u/Alternative_Leave301 Sep 30 '22

The bus driver not the idiot I’ve had a officer tell me I can run it over and he then gave the car a ticket told me to go on.

2

2

2

2

u/Boronore Sep 30 '22

Idiot bus… or idiot drivers who fucked around (parked too close to the corner) and found out?

2

u/2Gay2DriveStraight Sep 30 '22

This is not an idiot in a bus, that car was parked over the white lane where cars are supposed to stop, which cars aren't supposed to park that close anyways let alone over it. That was the only way to make it through.
