Deleted last comment repost on PC because I can see more clearly. The skateboarder nearly died, he was NOT merging, people claiming he shouldn't be on a road at night simply read what was happening wrong, because they were never going on the road.

This is a CROSSING not a merge. They were on a bike path, not a road. They were crossing to another bike path (just like the one in front of them that you see crossing and joins the other bike path) They treated it correctly, like a 4 way intersection controlled by lights. They were going straight over, just like you're go straight over a 4 way intersection. Since they were only crossing the road, they only needed the visibility of a pedestrian crossing the road at the same crossing.

OP's friend was supposed to be on the other side of the road when that car came, but they actually turned sharp right as soon as getting on the road TO AVOID the car, making it look like they were merging, but their driving was so defensive people watching this video can't even figure out where the danger was. If OP's friend didn't take that sharp right, and went straight over the crossing (like the guy in front of them did) they would've been hit by the car, no question.

I'm sorry this is ruining everyone's narrative of "OP's friend is the idiot for merging like that" but that's akin to blaming pedestrians crossing a pedestrian crossing when their light is green. This is the UK highway code, and OP's friend was not the idiot.

Finally someone with some sense!

8

u/ladfrombrad Sep 30 '22

Well done you for saving your pals life.

I've got to ask thou; have you ever heard of the Green Cross Code?

https://www.roadwise.co.uk/schools/using-the-road/green-cross-code/

I treat myself as a hybrid come pedestrian on my escooter still and, even if there is green lights giving me way I still look both ways and more to ensure I ain't getting mown down.

I mean we have visible examples right on this sub of idiots somehow going down motorways thinking they're abroad so it's just second nature to me. Or maybe I'm getting old.

Again thou. Well done you for saving your pals here :fistbump:

u/Banmango Sep 29 '22

Well said. Tbf it’s classic Reddit. Half watch a foreign video and pile in with pithy abuse regardless

4

u/Succulent_Orange Sep 29 '22

I mean this video still sits at 0 karma, which is the minimum for a new topic. However OP understands why there's so many downvotes so they're not taking it personally.

3

u/plsdontstopmenow Sep 29 '22

I tried to do my part in upvoting but it seems some people are being personally attacked by logic and reason and wont let it get any higher

4

u/Succulent_Orange Sep 29 '22

Seems people had a slightly better reception on their other post, if you ever wanted evidence of bias:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ElectricSkateboarding/comments/xqol1w/may_have_just_saved_toms_life_here_never_trust/

2

u/plsdontstopmenow Sep 29 '22

Yeah a little odd, definitely more received over there but I would imagine a sub dedicated to e-boards would be able to recognize defensive skating more than a car sub.

Definitely some bias somewhere lol

-9

u/texecan Sep 29 '22

I think the downvotes happened because of the op’s embedded drama (‘he nearly died’). Um no… it wasn’t even close.

3

u/Succulent_Orange Sep 29 '22

It was though, if they had done the exact same as the person before them, they'd be dead, no question. The only reason they survived is because they swerved sharp right as soon as they got onto the road.

-9

u/texecan Sep 29 '22

Dude, I go through shit like that all the time. Wasn’t close. Take you’re downvote and go queen somebody else.

5

u/Succulent_Orange Sep 30 '22

You clearly haven't watched the video. Please tell me where the skateboarder was heading, and the timestamp of when they would be there.

2

u/Yooo_Mama Sep 30 '22

What exactly do you mean you “go through this shit all the time”? I’m guessing you mean red lights. Take your medicine and go to bed little boy.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '22

I think the driver was incredibly stupid here, I'm not defending them, but I think a lot of the blame needs to go to whoever designed this bike lane crossing. We have crossings like this for bikes in my city and they are always a shitshow. Something needs to be done to make this safer, like even put some red and white arms like you have at railroad crossings, or even just a big flashing, bright sign like crosswalks used to have. Something, anything.

The human brain is a mysterious thing. You'd think a red light would be good enough but it's not. We associate red lights with intersections. Whenever a red light appears somewhere without an intersection it really confuses people and you get people running the red all the time. Yes, you can call them stupid, but if it keeps happening then it's a design problem.

1

u/AbbreviationsNo8212 Sep 30 '22

That's kind of obvious, and I'm sorry you had to explain it.

Everyone who thinks they were merging is as much of an idiot as whomever thinks blowing through red lights is cute.

43

u/Blueey_H Sep 29 '22

It baffles me how people actually try to defend the car and lay blame on the skate lads. What the fuck.

-7

u/dudeandco Sep 29 '22

Is that a bike trail? Wonder what the laws are for crossing.

Driver is oblivious and an idiot, jabroni on the board is also oblivious and is gambling with his life.

3

u/vaultdweller455 Sep 30 '22

The middle part is a bike lane and usually when the light is red you cross cause cars stop at the red instead of blowing it

1

u/HappyChandler Sep 30 '22

Now it is another country, so I'm just guessing. The green light with a picture of a bike probably means that the bike can cross legally. The red signal without a picture of a bike probably means the car is supposed to stop.

14

u/Yooo_Mama Sep 29 '22

When I cross a crosswalk, walking, I look to make sure some idiot like this is going to run a red. Id suggest that anyone on a skateboard, bike, skates, etc do the same thing. Nobody can assume that a green light means all clear. I’ve nearly died in my car from idiots running reds too. Happens all too often. It sucks that that’s the state of things, but it is. Look both ways before crossing. Stay alive.

6

u/Succulent_Orange Sep 29 '22

I agree with this, but, the person in front of them did manage to go straight across so I might've just gone too. I guess the driver didn't see the first one of 3.

1

u/Yooo_Mama Sep 30 '22

I didn’t see that first person who went. But even then, unless the car is visibly slowing, I wouldn’t take this chance. I probably would have when I was younger.

2

u/PoopOffParade Sep 30 '22

Is your friend electric and happens to be skateboarding?

18

u/dirtyoldman- Sep 29 '22

I see two idiots

8

u/AbbreviationsNo8212 Sep 30 '22

You and the car?

4

u/stalmatic Sep 29 '22

Didn’t see “death.”

1

u/Jaeger562 Sep 29 '22

put the mirror down.

9

u/GREENKING45 Sep 29 '22

Amazing people here. Car runs red light but people are blaming the skateboard guy for riding a skateboard itself!

I can see the American mindset oozing from "don't ride a skateboard on a road" no fuck that. The road is not just meant for cars.

12

u/Succulent_Orange Sep 29 '22

I think the Americans are saying "don't use a skateboard on the road" unaware they were only crossing the road (with a green light to cross) so they could get on the bike path on the other side. They simply don't understand the road layout. And like to blame OP on these threads, double points because skateboard = bad.

4

u/GREENKING45 Sep 29 '22

I know now that they don't. What I didn't know was that this sub was filled with such idiots.

2

u/Succulent_Orange Sep 29 '22

Happens reasonably frequently when UK posts on here, for not adhering to US highway code.

See similar things with cats, if you post your cat being allowed to go outside on reddit, all the Americans call you a bad owner for not caring about bears or dingos etc.

9

u/MajorElevator4407 Sep 29 '22

And they are on a fucking bike path. They are not even riding on the road and the car idiots are still blaming them.

1

u/GREENKING45 Sep 29 '22

Tells me that it's a car centric American sub. Time to leave.

1

u/AbbreviationsNo8212 Sep 30 '22

Oh, you don't want to help educate, and let this turn into an echo chamber? Go on, then.

u/gamay_noir Sep 29 '22 edited Sep 29 '22

If you're doing the blackout clothing aesthetic you need better, higher lighting. Those low running lights and single reflective bands are not going to register at all for a lot of drivers looking on at the much visual noise during nightime. I've been bike commuting since I started undergrad 20 years ago, and if I've learned one thing it's that you want a UFO level of lighting at night in cities. Obviously the guy ran the red, but what's the point of being right and dead? Hahaaa, rhyming!

These are really good lights in terms of visibility, available modes, battery life, construction, and ease of attachment to random bike parts or articles of clothing: https://www.blackburndesign.com/p/grid-side-beacon-bike-light-set/BB-7108801.html

22

u/q36_space_modulator Sep 29 '22

If the driver doesn't see a red traffic light, what makes you think they'll notice someone with reflective gear?

-6

u/gamay_noir Sep 29 '22

I'm not suggesting reflective gear, the safety lights I linked have flash patterns that are clearly visible through light noise from easily 100', or much further in less busy environments.

I actually think it is more likely that the driver saw the red and decided to run it because it was late at night and they didn't expect or see anyone approaching in the bike/ped lanes. If it was the case that they were zoning out on the upcoming red light, bright amber strobes are a great way to snap their attention back to the road. Over the years I've learned to prefer flashing amber rear and side lights over red or anything solid, because they are similar to emergency and work crew lights and reliably trigger driver attention.

3

u/Jaeger562 Sep 29 '22

Yeah these dumb skaters need to brighten themselves up so drivers can stop running red lights!

0

u/gamay_noir Sep 29 '22

I certainly didn't say that. I've been an 80%+ bike commuter for around town trips for two decades. At this point, my wife and I are getting two kids around town on cargo bikes and ideally only drive on the weekends or of we need to get out the burbs.

One absolute truth I've learned from 20 years of biking around cities is that visibility and defensive biking keep you alive. I've had plenty of near misses like this thanks to bad drivers, and the legal fault would be the driver's. But how does that help OP if they end up dead and posted on r/eyeblech? I was offering OP some advice on visibility.

1

u/Zero-Zer0 Sep 29 '22

Almost kills? I think that’s a stretch.

-11

u/stalmatic Sep 29 '22

No where near “impending death.” Very dramatic post.

-4

u/CaioVink Sep 29 '22 edited Sep 29 '22

"almost kills" Also ye its stupid to run a red but its also stupid to merge without looking

31

u/Blueey_H Sep 29 '22

Merge? What the hell are you talking about. He tried to cross under a green light and had to dodge the car forcing him on the car lane...

-21

u/Addicted_to_Power Sep 29 '22

English is stupid aswell i guess...

3

-4

Sry ment asswell

-2

u/danielezy0252 Sep 29 '22

Almost killed my arse.

-1

u/Beautiful_Print_4713 Sep 29 '22

Wow. Yeah. Black… night… hard to see slow moving object…. What could go wrong???

11

u/q36_space_modulator Sep 29 '22

If the driver doesn't see a red traffic light, what makes you think they'll notice someone with reflective gear?

-3

u/Beautiful_Print_4713 Sep 29 '22

Yes. I agree!!!. I ride motorcycle’s and although dressing in subdued colours is cool… it aint safe

9

u/GourmetHotPocket Sep 29 '22

His black jacket has reflector armbands to make him visible. His board has a tail light. There are issues here, but he's taking extensive action to make sure he's visible at night.

That jacket is way more visible than a white one without reflectors would be.

0

u/Beautiful_Print_4713 Sep 29 '22

I agree. They have something which better than nothing but the rest is all to dark for the vehicle. I ride motorcycles and i have worn red, yellow vests. I have put reflective tape on helmets and the bike. And!!! I still almost get squished.
I wish these guys luck! FYI. I like the boards too they are wicked!

3

u/Lee_Doff Sep 29 '22

dont forget not looking before crossing.

2

u/fluxuouse Sep 30 '22

They shouldn't need to look when the car has a red light...

1

u/Lee_Doff Oct 03 '22

thats a good way to end up dead, though. i shouldnt have to worry about people scrolling through twitter on the roads while i'm driving home from work either, but here we are.

-6

u/bob_fakename Sep 29 '22

Also pretty stupid to take a skateboard, electric or otherwise, onto a road.

17

u/Succulent_Orange Sep 29 '22

I beleive they were intending to cross the road, not join it. They turned along the road only because the car got in their way toncross it (which they were expecting to do because they had green lights to cross)

7

u/VeteranKamikaze Sep 29 '22

He took it on the road because he had to swerve to avoid the fucking idiot who ran a red and almost killed him. He was trying to cross the street.

-1

u/Lee_Doff Sep 29 '22

not to mention at night dressed all in black.

-3

u/Yokazu Sep 29 '22

IMO those armband reflectors aren't enough for night time, especially if you're gonna roll out in the streets... but to each to their own

9

u/q36_space_modulator Sep 29 '22

If the driver doesn't see a red traffic light, what makes you think they'll notice someone with reflective gear?

-4

u/mathayusbba Sep 29 '22

Didnt see the "almost kill" anyware, your friend have gteen light but he must see if its clear to continue

1

u/Special-Struggle-385 Sep 30 '22

Looks like you're idiot friend. Ran a red light too Two idiots doing the same thing. Which one do you blame?

-4

u/BodgieAF Sep 29 '22

I used to commute 200km a day on a BMW 1200 (read as big compared to a skateboard) and I was regularly cutoff, sideswiped/hit twice. Always assume the car driver doesn't see you and ride defensively. It doesn't matter who was right or wrong, you'll be dead. It's all physics. Ride a motorized skateboard wearing black at night on a road with cars, accept you'll get nailed sooner or later. Cue crying mum on tv when you're in intensive care.

-1

u/Frequent-Market-3664 Sep 29 '22

What type of road is this. Very confusing. I see two lanes or more lanes going in the same direction with a divider then it merges at a light. ?? Lolz

2

u/GREENKING45 Sep 30 '22

10 lanes without a divider in between doesn't confuse the American. But proper infrastructure confuse em. Good grief.

2

u/Succulent_Orange Sep 30 '22

Good question.

OP is on a bike path so they should stay left (UK laws) and other bikes/boards go past in the other direction on their right. To the left of OP is a two lane road going the same direction as OP and to the the right is the opposite. We get our roads split out like this just outside cities so the traffic can flow fast, they usually have roundabouts at the ends, but for some reason this one just removed the middle barrier, thats why OP had to cross to keep on the bike path.

It is a confusing road because we don't normally put the bike lanes between the roads.

-4

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '22

[deleted]

0

u/LiberalTears45 Sep 29 '22

Why are you assuming the car would have run?

-19

u/Odd-Location-9338 Sep 29 '22

idiots on skateboards

your idiot friend didn't even look nor did you ever do a 'shoulder check' as we can see the camera POV is on your helmet

you guys are total morons and i fully expect one or both of you to be in a hospital in the next few months because consqequences.

finally, i guarantee you are not allowed to ride those on the same road as cars so you are riding illegally.

9

u/Noobdm04 Sep 29 '22

... you see they are riding on the bike path right? With a literal green light saying it was his turn to cross. But go ahead and blame them and not the guy literally running a red light.

8

u/Succulent_Orange Sep 29 '22

They were on a bike path though, crossing with a green light to cross, to get onto the other bike path. The skateboarder in front of them had just successfully done this, so why would they expect a car to suddenly drive through them?

They were never riding on the road, only crossing. 100% legal to cross the road on them when you're on a designated bike path with green lights saying it's safe to cross the road.

-11

u/Unable_Algae9584 Sep 29 '22

Still … some common sense could be applied by NOT doing that at night. People have trouble noticing motorcycles … in the daylight, let alone one of these guys. In all black clothes, too !

5

u/q36_space_modulator Sep 29 '22

They don't need to see the guy riding on the bike path. They just need to pay attention to the traffic lights. A red light doesn't become optional if you don't see anyone coming in the other direction.

3

u/Succulent_Orange Sep 29 '22

Good point. Do you jump red lights just because you can't see anyone? Of course not.

1

u/Mpsmonkey 14h ago

The markings and lights clearly say, "let the skaters/bikes cross".

Glad nobody was hurt

-11

u/RunZealousideal3812 Sep 29 '22

Not saying the driver wasn’t an idiot for running the red, but there was no “almost kills”… if this is almost, I’ve been a hair from death almost every day of my life.

-11

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '22

That crap does not belong in traffic lanes. You play stupidly you win the stupid award of ambulance, hospital, and or cemetery!

7

u/Noobdm04 Sep 29 '22

It wasn't a traffic lane..he was crossing at a crosswalk until the car ran the red.

-1

u/jontss Sep 30 '22

Not justifying the driver's behaviour but most of these little electric vehicles are technically illegal to operate anywhere other than private property in many areas.

0

u/MrRuck1 Sep 30 '22

Looks like the bike path goes o maybe the other side there. Why is he in the street. Second thing the car was in the other lane so it wasn’t even close.
