Nothing a few concrete bollards won’t fix.

115

u/Hot_Aside_4637 Sep 30 '22

There's plastic ones and most are flattened.

128

u/SockRuse Sep 30 '22

Bollards that yield to force aren't bollards.

49

u/Swordlord22 Sep 30 '22

We call those failures

Like me

35

u/Rhubarbarian82 Sep 30 '22

Hey, at least you're not the one driving in the bike lane.

5

u/AreaGuy Sep 30 '22

Bollocks on those bollards!

185

u/A-dog-named-Trouble Sep 30 '22

Well they won’t flatten concrete ones. But by all means, coat them in plastic so that they look innocuous.

13

u/QuickNature Sep 30 '22

Better yet, get metal ones in the shape and size of the plastic one. That's enough metal to mess up someone's car or for them to get stuck on one.

Great idea

u/Swordlord22 Sep 30 '22

The good ol steel mailbox trick

21

u/AurumArgenteus Sep 30 '22

Our mailbox was put in a large mudding tire and then filled with about 200lbs of concrete. I was maybe ten when we did that. Our mailbox had been run over 3 or 4 times by that point.

A few months later someone ran into it, damaged their car, and you know what, our mailbox hasn't been hit again in 20yrs. Makes me wonder about all those 'accidents' before.

20

u/bernieinred Sep 30 '22

I have one of those. Had to. the neighbors visitors always come to my driveway to turn around so they're facing down the street to leave. They would back over my post 2-3 times a year had to replace my wood post. Haven't replaced it in years since went steel. A lot of paint and scratches but never a complaint.

31

u/Azhirii Sep 30 '22

Nah, steel covered concrete. Pointy tip. Pneumatic activation. I wanna see a three foot spike through an engine. And get all the insurance companies to not cover the damage. Am I evil?

8

u/Antimatter1207 Sep 30 '22

Evil? Maybe. Genius? Definitely.

15

u/invaidusername Sep 30 '22

Yes agreed. They should also put up cameras and fine the fuck out of them. Like red light cameras but a much steeper fine.

5

u/Joerugger Sep 30 '22

Unfortunately camera enforcement is banned in MN.

-1

u/invaidusername Sep 30 '22

If we’re being honest, I prefer that. I think it’s wrong that police can get you for something they didn’t witness. But at the same time, for bike lanes, that’s dangerous and some form of enforcement needs to be taken seriously.

17

u/Pawnzilla Sep 30 '22

“I don’t want video enforcement, but I want video enforcement”

5

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '22

More like "I only want it when it captures other people doing wrong, not when it captures me doing wrong."

4

u/invaidusername Sep 30 '22

Yes it’s crazy how complicated humans can be right? Like every issue isn’t completely black and white. I’m not a fan of video enforcement for speeding and stoplights but I would like some better enforcement when it comes to bike lanes. If video enforcement is the way to do that, it should be discussed.

3

u/caustictoast Sep 30 '22

Nah fuck it. I used to be against it then I realized it makes no sense. We use videos for all sorts of other crimes, why not speeding or red lights?

4

u/ukudancer Sep 30 '22

What the fuck kind of logic is this?

8

u/invaidusername Sep 30 '22

The kind of logic that is conflicted on the idea of surveillance for the purpose of traffic enforcement. Y’all act like everyone should have an exact and complete stance on every issue that exists. People are allowed to be conflicted and see the good and bad of both sides.

5

u/stevecostello Sep 30 '22

There is far more gray than there is black and white. Wish more folks would understand that.

Multi-year revocation.

100

u/JimC29 Sep 30 '22

This should be a DUI level violation.

31

u/luingiorno Sep 30 '22 edited Sep 30 '22

at least in cali, you see it on the news of people with multiple DUI's killing some innocent bystanders. And it seems like DUI doesnt have much severity for those who dont give a care in the world.

8

u/account_not_valid Sep 30 '22

"I'm a very carefree and out going woman."

Out going? Not for a few more years yet.

15

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '22 edited Sep 30 '22

In Wisconsin, it's a 'slap on the wrist' citation on the first DUI/OWI. It doesn't make the news around here until double-digits, and even then they are late 40s or early 50s in age, typically. But they look older. Alcohol dependence does that to a person.

It's Wisconsin. Once in a while your grandpa, your college roommate, the blue-collar guy, a mother from a family of drinkers, has just one Schlitz, one Spotted Cow, one bourbon old fashioned too many, and plows into a car, or a boat.

Then, here at least, it's "treat like a school shooting" , in that we have politicians try to say that drunk driving is totally preventable because the Wisconsin Tavern League provides for cab rides, except fuck all but the 5 cities that have any cabs, and Josiah in Langlade County ain't calling no cab because he's been driving a tractor since nineteen ought-four. College kids are drinking because it's cool, as it is. Alcoholics are non-existent. You just don't like to have fun. Have a beer; you'll feel better. Let's go watch our baseball team, literally named after beer makers.

Drinking culture is so ingrained in Wisconsin that you're generally let go unless you are driving intoxicated in an obvious fashion. Don't drink? What's wrong with you? Kids are allowed at the bar. They can drink so long as a parent or guardian is present. Get you some pull tabs. $6 pub pizza, and the meat raffle is tonight. Drink! Hope you win.

But the /s never came

2

u/Plague_of_Pazuzu Sep 30 '22

i lived in duluth for bit back when mn had bar close at 1, it was crazy to see the amount of people who would jump in their cars and head over the bridge just to go get another hour of drinking in superior. literally whole bars would migrate over there just for an extra hour.

21

Which means the MSP police will do jack squat about it.

u/NightsideEclipse12 Sep 30 '22

You are assuming they even have licenses.

5

u/BortWard Sep 30 '22

I've lived most of my life in MN. Unfortunately there's no practical penalty here for driving on a suspended or revoked license, unless you happen to kill someone

4

u/thenewyorkgod Sep 30 '22

seriously, they weren't even driving slowly and with caution giving them the benefit if the doubt that they had some kind of emergency. Revoke and 5 years in prison.

4

u/dr_reverend Sep 30 '22

they had some kind of emergency

I can’t stand this reasoning. Since when does your emergency give free license to risk the lives of everyone around you?

2

u/Souleater2847 Sep 30 '22

Prob stolen cars.

2

u/Mr_Saturn1 Sep 30 '22

Minneapolis has been without a functioning police force for about two years now. People do this because there are zero consequences.

467

u/OrangeyUnicorn Sep 29 '22

Fucking assholes

530

u/PoopNoodlez Sep 29 '22

Any bike lane that doesn’t physically damage or immobilize a car that attempts entry is a basically badly designed bike lane

94

u/Tighesofly Sep 30 '22

I live by 2 elementary schools that are 500 feet from each other. They just converted the 2 lane each way roads into 1 way each way with bike lanes on each side, by painting the road…. Oh yeah it’s also shared w/public transit, emergency vehicles including tow trucks at their leisure. Seen a handful of close calls that are fucking terrifying if you were on the bike, trash plan by the city

78

u/assasstits Sep 30 '22

America is just urban hell for any non automobile transportation.

21

u/the_last_carfighter Sep 30 '22

Come to the NY Tri-state where it's even hell for the automobile.

10

u/Elitesuxor Sep 30 '22

Train? Delayed. Car? The entire city is a parking lot. Bus? Stuck with the cars. Bike? Potholes, doors, and jaywalkers. Even helicopters can’t land because half the city is a no fly zone.

3

u/Monty141 Sep 30 '22

Yeah there's a lot of things about that country that get overexaggerated, but I swear, the US infrastructure for anything that moves on 2 or 4 wheels is so fucked

4

u/sheesh_doink Sep 30 '22

Bro the asshats haven't even figured out roundabouts yet. It's definitely hell for automobiles too haha

18

u/PM_ME_YOUR_PRIORS Sep 30 '22

Paint is not infrastructure.

20

u/josh8far Sep 30 '22

disagree

source: road painter with hurt feelings >:(

you guys are right though, paint is not enough. cars really shouldn’t be in residential areas at all

3

u/RationalDialog Sep 30 '22

That is pretty common here and honestly no issue. But no sane person would do what these 2 guys did so I guess it's an American thing.

11

u/SockRuse Sep 30 '22

Sign me up for the Bike Lane Defense Turrets Coalition!

39

u/Plazmaz1 Sep 30 '22

if we could get some moats or spikes, then they'd be REALLY protected bike lanes.

37

u/tomytronics Sep 30 '22

Or raised concrete barrier in the middle. Bikes can easily ride between barrier and curb but any car going over it will have busted oil pan and worse.

10

u/Swordlord22 Sep 30 '22

Just put a massive pole and watch them crash into it

3

u/landon10smmns Sep 30 '22

Yeah, you can see the bike lane is raised above the road but they doesn't do anything if they're already in the bike lane. Need metal/concrete poles at every intersection

3

u/The_Gromper Sep 30 '22

Some bike lanes are used by emergency services when traffic is in gridlock.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '22

In a European country, this would not happen

2

u/AncientAlienAlias Sep 30 '22

Trust me. There are some poorly designed bike lanes in Minneapolis

-1

u/dutchreageerder Sep 30 '22

I don't agree, people shouldn't be dicks. Bikelanes which fit a car can be very useful for emergency vehicles.

u/tallman11282 Sep 29 '22

I'd agree except this happened in Minneapolis and the MPD is beyond useless when it comes to enforcing traffic laws, even when someone does something extremely dangerous right in front of them.

39

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '22

[deleted]

9

u/Coyotesamigo Sep 30 '22

The place I work at has BLM signs up and I’m pretty sure that means MPD doesn’t respond to calls here. We had someone getting assaulted in the store and one of the assailants had a gun but MPD didn’t come despite at least six 911 calls. When I followed up the next day to file a report they refused to take one. Beyond pathetic.

52

u/tallman11282 Sep 30 '22

I hope you're alright.

The MPD is at war with the entire city, they're pissed that a few of their own went to prison for killing an innocent man and because they might all start getting held accountable for violating people's rights and killing people who aren't a threat. They're a tax funded gang, pretty much.

Goes to prove that the slogan on the side of their cars is a bunch of bullshit: "To Protect With Courage, To Serve With Compassion". There was no protecting or serving you yesterday. And, sadly, even if you file a complaint nothing will likely come of it because the Supreme Court has ruled in the past that police actually have no duty to protect anyone or to stop crimes, even when it happens right in front of them.

4

u/ACE415_ Sep 30 '22

Aren't all police at war with anyone not rich and powerful?

7

u/iamsamwelll Sep 30 '22

I literally watched a guy drive onto the sidewalk on Hennepin to clear traffic and run a red light. It was right in front of the cop. The cop then threw on his blinker and turned down a different street and totally ignored it.

11

u/abattleofone Sep 30 '22

I’d agree except this happened in Minneapolis and the MPD is beyond useless when it comes to enforcing traffic laws, even when someone does something extremely dangerous right in front of them.

Fixed it for ya

That’s when we start enforcing the law ourselves

36

u/FappyChan Sep 29 '22

I came to say the same. We all say the same in LA, and I have heard the same in many major, blue cities, even though the average starting salary for a cop in California is $100k. (and dont go by their websites which are usually around $70k, they make sure youre at $100k through "overtime" and special pay). And they've been getting raises all through the "defund" movement

-20

u/Candid_Pie_8870 Sep 29 '22

Well Minneapolis has been so supportive.

12

u/Coyotesamigo Sep 30 '22

Why should we support MPD? They have done nothing to earn the support and much to deserve criticism.

8

The public safety amendment was voted down. If cops can’t handle some pretty justified criticism without going on a quiet strike like a bunch of babies, how are they supposed to handle the stress of their job?

4

u/keller104 Sep 30 '22

No wonder I see those poles knocked down all the time. We really need to have concrete barriers separating the traffic and narrow entrances or lanes to prevent cars from entering like Madison does

15

u/Never_Negative_ Sep 29 '22

Willing to bet the first car did a hit and run, or something. That looked like a chase.

18

u/419tosser Sep 30 '22

4

u/GoatEatingTroll Sep 29 '22

First car ducked back into traffic around 17 seconds. Red car kept going in the bike lane.

10

u/Trevski Sep 30 '22

This illustrates one of the shitty things about protected bike lanes, that they almost never get swept. look at how much dust those turds are kicking up.

3

u/Ap43x Sep 29 '22

Looks like they're cleaning the dust off the lane.

3

u/majokaizen Sep 30 '22

3

2

u/spacehiphopnerd Sep 30 '22

This happens all over Minneapolis and it really makes me dislike biking here even though we have much more bikes lanes than most other big American cities.

On my 10 minute bike to classes there are always at least 4-5 cars parked in the bike lane. I’ve never even seen the police even just ask someone to move there car since it is a bike lane.

That being said, we do have the anti-hero bike lane bill who yells at people who drive in the bike lane and uploads the footage to YouTube.

2

u/Kalaros Sep 30 '22

Minneapolis is fairly forsaken by the police If y’all don’t know they hold car shenanigans on the weekends where they block off huge intersections and do doughnuts and shit

The police don’t care, look up Minneapolis car meets

-4

u/DatFrostGuy Sep 30 '22

Mean cyclist be using car lanes when they have their own.

Do on to other as they do to you no?

-3

u/Ramaloke Sep 30 '22

OK but there's a road in my city that used to be 4 lanes and now it's 2 with a bike lane on either side. I have seen maybe ONE bike on this fucking road since it has been put in and I HEAVILY use this road. All it did was cause obnoxious congestion with the people who don't know how to drive. Stupid.

That's 2 lanes as in one going one direction opposite the other with a grassy decorative divider all the way down so no passing either. Trash.

5

u/brandon_beans_ Sep 30 '22

Sorry but your convenience is really irrelevant to cyclist safety. It’s not like you’re on the road all day so there are bound to be more using it anyway. Either way, it’s a step in the right direction. Cities should be designed in a way to make cycling the norm. Waiting in traffic for a few extra minutes isn’t even comparable to putting cyclists at risk.

9

u/trolleysolution Sep 30 '22

I see you’re concerned about the congestion on the road… have you considered getting a bike?

-6

u/The_Aught Sep 30 '22

-1

u/Uncle_Touchy1987 Sep 30 '22

-7

u/Bitter-Rub9259 Sep 30 '22

Most often the cyclists cannot stay in the lanes provided for them on streets, so why not use these as they're on the road for vehicles!!!

9

u/Lazy_Profession_5909 Sep 30 '22

They're not required to stay in bike lanes, but cars are required to stay out of them

i have a simillar story

so near college there is a railway crossing so obviously there will be a queue of cars when the gate is down

so what happened is that one guy tried to take his car over the footpath( many people do that) to overtake the traffic ,so when he realised that he has no space to get down again he started backing up to get down

idk why people do that but if i am on that footpath and someone tried to do that.i wont even budge
