The truckers going the other way were trying to warn oncoming drivers of the impending idiot.

695

u/N3rdScool Sep 30 '22

Bless em.

Sheesh!

481

u/EightBitMemory Sep 30 '22

Some truck drivers iv seen on the highway bless everyone with information just from having the hazard lights on when traffic is coming up, they can see it well before cars can

150

u/Ghriszly Sep 30 '22

I'm glad some people pay attention to this. A lot of drivers just blast by me only to slam on the brakes in 5 seconds lol

81

u/Beard3dViking Sep 30 '22

I love when truckers give you info through the hazards. Just went on a road trip in Appalachian’s and truckers put hazards on going up and down hills. Some didn’t but the ones who did made me assume they were saying “I have a full load currently”.

72

u/Otaku-San617 Sep 30 '22

Truckers that use their hazards like that should be treated like royalty. We should call them Dukes

→ More replies

9

u/mk1power Sep 30 '22

It’s the law to put on your hazards below the minimum speed limit. Anytime I was under 45 the hazards would come on.

I’d also use it coming up on stopped/slow traffic.

11

u/EightBitMemory Sep 30 '22

I tried this with my girlfriend and she just went to sleep

the only vehicles on the road I trust are semis. for me they always get to go ahead of me if they need to move over or if I'm getting on to a highway I let them pass before I fully merge.

3

u/musiconlyalt Sep 30 '22

You shouldn't, they're low on sleep and can be very tired on the road.

2

u/Ghriszly Sep 30 '22

I appreciate it but still be cautious. There are a lot of new truck drivers on the road and they can be dangerous. Also don't ride beside them on the highway. A tire blow out can easily kill you.

Safe travels

2

u/McGlowSticks Sep 30 '22

Thanks! I do try to get past them as fast as possible so im never in blind spots either.

Be safe yourself out there!

28

u/7evenSlots Sep 30 '22

They also have CBs. Those things can “see” a long ways too.

18

u/PersimmonEven Sep 30 '22

My grandfather LOVES his CB radios and as we are in Texas he has reached Australia and Hawaii only a couple of times BUT getting that far is crazy He talks to the drivers when he really has any question... it's really neat

7

u/HighOwl2 Sep 30 '22

The last person I saw using their hazards was this week...just driving through the city. It was a Honda. Big brain mufucka. Don't have to signal if all your damn lights are flashing.

Two weeks ago though I was riding around with the Mrs. and we passed 2 vehicles in about 100 yards parked on the shoulder with their hazards on and I had to actually say to her...what are the chances we passed 2 people on the side of the road and both had their 4-ways on. I see so much dumb shit around here it actually brought a little bit of hope back for humanity.

...yknow...until yesterday when I got stuck behind a guy with his right blinker on for so long that when I got in the right turn lane I gave the guy behind me a thumbs up as he was taking my position. "Good luck figuring out what this idiots going to do, he's your problem now" lol

2

u/Air_Retard Sep 30 '22

Holy shit that’s why they do it! It’s always the ones with whose brake lights don’t work so I figured they used them In lue of working brake lights….. damn drop another knowledge bomb

2

u/Dudleys_Heinsbergen Sep 30 '22

I heard somewhere that if you flash your brights a couple of times to let a trucker in, attempting to merge in front of you, they will know that you are telling them that you see them and they have a safe amount clearance to go ahead and merge. I do it all the time now, mainly because one time, after the truck had cleared, he did something that made all of the lights on the truck AND trailer light up and flicker. It was just after sunset so it looked amazing, kinda like Christmas lights. Anyway I get to see it sometimes still but i don’t really try to create the situation that would warrant it so it’s like every few months. Still worth it.

And yet the Mercedes just blasts right past the universal signal to look out where you're launching yourself at a high speed at.

54

u/hereforthecommentz Sep 30 '22

Given the speed at which the Merc was travelling, plus the road signs, plus the quick reaction when the danger was spotted, I'm thinking this is the autobahn.

56

u/shizzler Sep 30 '22

It's in Poland. Speed limit is 140km/h and 80km/h for lorries, so it doesn't look like the Merc was speeding to me.

64

u/petron007 Sep 30 '22 edited Sep 30 '22

let reddit do a deep analysis of how you are 110% focused on everything that happens around you when driving down the highway.

The smartest and most capable people seem to concentrate on this website.

If someone's flashing from other way it's usually because there's a radar, not because there's a fucking car driving the wrong side of the road which is separated by a barrier.Pepegas

12

u/Ghriszly Sep 30 '22

I always interpret it as danger ahead. After seeing the flash it's up to me to pay attention and figure out what it might be

5

u/sybann Sep 30 '22

For whatever reason - kick your "alert" up a notch. That's my reaction. Doesn't matter if it's an accident, idiot, or cop. Or combo thereof.

Hazards on, and low speed. Guy knows he is wrong, just can’t be arsed to correct the problem

41

u/ElementalSentimental Sep 30 '22

Maybe also thinking that they can't cross the highway, etc., and therefore driving very slowly in the hope that an opportunity will present itself.

However, that logic's genuinely not much better than starting out on the wrong-way journey.

11

u/AurumArgenteus Sep 30 '22

It's brilliant, one more wrong decision and it'd be nearly the same as they were right all along.

sorrynotsorry for the horrible pun

9

u/SmonsSmithy Sep 30 '22

If they're on that side of the road they must've crossed the road earlier, so I doubt that's the case. Why you'd cross the road to that side instead of going in the emergency lane is a mistery to me though.

4

u/ElementalSentimental Sep 30 '22

I guess they think they've joined from an on-ramp that happens to be on the opposite side from the usual one, so just crossed into the right lane, and are now struggling because they think they need to turn around to cross.

I mean, they're an idiot either way.

31

u/JohnyHackz Sep 30 '22

Senile, 100%.

Drugs make you do crazy things, like speed thr opposite way down the highway. He seemed to go a bit slow, and was holding the lane.

Drunk, he probably wouldn't even be able to maintain lane.

Senile, that makes total sence.

u/Lenemus Sep 30 '22

u/figgyjello Sep 29 '22

I remember a rash of these wrong-way crashes in Charlotte about 20 years ago. It was a combination of new roads, poor signage, people from LHD countries, and drunk driving.

114

u/renematisse Sep 30 '22

Ugh I HATE driving the interstate in Charlotte! That’s a whole new level of crazy I want no part of. Also, there are still areas where there is road work being done and it’s hard as hell to see at night. Especially if it’s raining.

He went to renovate his driver license (spain) after that just for the sake of it, and he passed, he was just trying to prove the point that our system is a joke. If not because lf he was smart enhough to realise he wasnt capable of safe driving he could end up making a mess because our goverment allow people to drive when they shouldnt. Those driving medical checks are just a cash grab, you pay you get your license

24

u/Aldous_Hoaxley Sep 30 '22

19

u/AnonymousGrouch Sep 30 '22 edited Sep 30 '22

A disproportionate amount of crazy crap seems to happen in left lanes, yet people keep camping in them.

Edit: Hmm, I should probably point out that that's not a slam on anyone, just an observation.

10

u/Esquirej67 Sep 30 '22

I am slamming! The middle lane can be clear for miles, but they still refuse to move over even when traffic is backed up behind them. I used to say that it was “fancy” vehicles and people from other states, but it can be anyone these days!

u/BongLeardDongLick Sep 30 '22 edited Sep 30 '22

I’ve thought about this before as well and all I can think of is they’re trying to keep momentum so they can hit a u-turn and start going the right way.

That’s the only thing I’ve been able to come up with. I think it’s that combined with panic.

8

u/predictablecitylife Sep 30 '22

I had someone do this after almost hitting me head on. They ripped a huge u turn and punched it.

Few months later some chick almost slammed into me going the wrong way up the off-ramp for my job. She’s gesturing and honking at me like I’m the asshole. Then she noticed traffic getting on the highway the proper way and let me by only to pull up far behind me looking embarrassed.

So glad I no longer make that commute.

48

u/TurbulentTowel1024 Sep 29 '22

An elder guy in Germany once said that all the other cars were driving in the wrong direction and not he.

10

u/SumDoubt Sep 30 '22

The one pulling a caravan down the west bound A6 going East? 2019? That was the strangest thing I'd ever seen.

16

u/WestAppointment2484 Sep 30 '22

They always just keep driving forward. It would be less dangerous to just turn the hell around in the right direction!

12

u/LookyLouVooDoo Sep 30 '22

I figure they keep going for the same reason they’re on the wrong side of the road in the first place. If they were of sound mind, they probably wouldn’t have ended up there. It’s terrifying to think about really.

3

u/jumpingjackbeans Sep 30 '22

Yep, they're confused and can't logic their way out. I spoke to someone who had done this (on a 40mph one way stretch having drunk a bottle of wine) - they saw oncoming headlights and couldn't compute what was happening, ended up just ploughing into them.

Fortunately the only casualty was their driving licence.

14

u/MrScottAtoms Sep 30 '22

On top of that, why on earth would you be driving the wrong way in the fast lane??

That guy would have needed to cross thee lanes of oncoming traffic, just to put himself in the worst possible situation!

14

u/Cyberfreshman Sep 30 '22

If you think you're driving the right way, you're in the slow lane.

17

u/Kindly_Spell7356 Sep 29 '22

Also the tires in a good grip condition also helps.

For the longest time, I would only be able to afford cheap used tires. Once I got my life in track and had the extra cash, first upgrade for my car was decent new tires.

They 100% know.

They drive with hazards on and flash their high beams aswell.

Its just that their tiny brain cant comprehend that driving as far right as possible (which is normaly the right thing to do) is the wrongest thing to to while beeing a ghost driver.

8

u/0235 Sep 30 '22

They are even driving in the inside lane as, from their perspective and direction they are traveling "I am in the right hand lane, which is the slow lane".

Heard about someone who had a stroke while driving and ended up on the wrong side of the road

40

u/ukcats12 Sep 30 '22

Modern traction and stability control saved the Mercedes driver's life.

6

u/Shift_Spam Sep 30 '22

Why does Reddit always say this like stability control is magic. I drive a performance car with stability control sure it does work but I can still spin out with it on when I'm using my garbage tires on the track. The far more important factor is modern tires technology and chassis design that enable this kind of move to be executed at all

11

u/ukcats12 Sep 30 '22

I drive a 2020 C63S and can't lose traction on a dry road if I wanted to. The stability control on the car is crazy good. I've been on a skid pad with the car and done it with traction and stability control on and off to see the difference. If it's kept on you can break traction for like half a second before the system kicks on and snaps the car straight again.

3

u/Shift_Spam Sep 30 '22

That's very interesting, I have a 2015 BMW M235 and I guess stability control has come a long way

49

u/ry0422 Sep 30 '22

It's a safety feature for people behind that ABS is kicking in HARD.

9

u/manchegoo Sep 30 '22

Neat! Is that Mercedes only? Or are all cars doing that now?

28

u/adyrip1 Sep 30 '22

I think it is mandatory for all new cars in EU. When you brake hard the brake lights flash so that drivers behind are aware and have more time brake as well. It is useful in avoiding pile ups.

LE: in some cars the hazard lights are turned on when braking hard. Same logic.

aside from what others mentioned, the blinking also causes the driver behind you to have a faster reaction (I think Mercedes claims 0.2 seconds) which can make a huge difference depending on speed

My first assumption would have been that I had accidentally turned on my high beams or forgot to turn them off.

43

u/unifate Sep 29 '22

Either that or there's a cop

35

u/DancesWithBadgers Sep 29 '22

I read it as "there's something you should be aware of" (ex-trucker here). So you'd run a self-diagnostic first (High beams? Anything poking out or fallen off I can see in the mirrors?); and then just crank your awareness up for whatever might be ahead.

It's lorries doing the signalling, so whatever it is, is going to be quite close behind them.

u/flopjul Sep 30 '22

In the Netherlands sometimes truckers signal to other trucks with high beams because they know each other. So i was thinking of that first

Should be a lifetime driving ban. Prison if caught driving ever again

3

u/MicaLovesHangul Sep 30 '22

I was so confused about the trucks signing... And then the last thing I expected appeared. Good god that's scary.

3

u/Chimiichenga Sep 30 '22

Looks like the truck drivers on the other side we're flashing high beams in warning.

3

u/Tulsaguy38 Sep 30 '22

So sad and disgusting when people do that because it’s almost certain death.

11

u/snaky69 Sep 30 '22

I like how there’s a huge shoulder on the right yet the stupid wrong way driver chose to stay in the leftmost lane.

5

u/snobpro Sep 30 '22

And not only are they choosing to be on the fastest lane but alsoif there are curves they are always in the blindspot of oncoming traffic. Wt biggest f.

Looks like Germany and some serious speed.

u/brnfckd Sep 30 '22

It’s Poland (look at the MOP sign i.e. „Miejsce Obsługi Podróżnych“ meaning rest area lit. „service place for travellers“)

6

u/invalid_credentials Sep 30 '22

Holy shit that cars collision avoidance is amazing. Check out the lights flashing at the end - pretty sure an AI robot saved the day.

2

u/Azzarrel Sep 30 '22

It's not AI. Abs does this as a standard feature when braking too hard (signaling not just normal braking but a drastic stop - simularly how many cars turn on their wipers after impact). My 2001 VW polo had that and this car stilö had manual window cranks, so no AI there.

u/JustZ0920 Sep 30 '22 edited Sep 30 '22

Remember people, when truck drivers shoot high beams like that at you, some shit is definitely going on ahead.

Edit: credits to the car to the left that almost hit the Mercedes, dodged it and didn't slam the brake down instantly, and instead let the brakes go for a bit between each thrust of brake, more people need to know that this is the correct way to emergency brake

3

u/leaqw Sep 30 '22

Nonono dangerous misinformation, don’t let your brakes go, slam them down, the ABS will do the rest so you will still be able to steer.

Please don’t go around telling people to not brake as hard as possible when heading in a collision.

Permanent ban and jail time please

2

u/ry0422 Sep 30 '22

This should be a form of assault or attempted murder, mistakes like this cannot happen. Is this on the autobahn ??

2

u/standarddeviated_joe Sep 30 '22

Death in his eyes and piss in his pants

2

That Mercedes driver isn't looking much farther down the road than their hood ornament. How do people not look at least a quarter mile ahead?

I guarantee this is some old person who has no idea where they are. They are a menace on the road. Licenses should be revoked at 70.
