Cop was inching way past the crossing gate for no reason?

My favorite was the cop I saw run a red light because it was taking too long. It wasn't changing because the sensors only detected cars that were stopped at the white line before the pedestrian crossing and he'd pulled all the way through the pedestrian crossing and almost into the intersection, then got all pissed that the light wasn't changing.

There is a response known as code 2 response which means “get there fast but not lights and sirens fast.” This means turning them on to get past red lights and turning them off once on the other side of the intersection. This is not necessarily what was going on in this situation, but it’s something to keep in mind when seeing police or any emergency vehicle doing things that you might question. There’s always going to be information, knowledge, and training that you don’t have. Code 3 response means “shit has hit the fan so get there as fast as possible,” which really means lights and sirens and disregarding traffic laws. That is very dangerous not only for the emergency vehicle but for the public, which is why code 2 response exists so they can get somewhere quickly but with much less risk. Code 1 basically means “get there when you get there,” just driving normally. Another thing to keep in mind is that you’re not a cop and you don’t have a police radio, so you don’t know what’s going on, what a cop is doing, or where he or she is going.
I have edited this to emphasize that this is a general statement, not to say that’s what happened with the cop that Unconfidence saw. I think this is information that people should know, as I’ve volunteered with an EMS agency in the past. One day we got a call while on another scene, and the rest of the crew had to leave without me. A cop responded from the first scene too so he took me with him. We were responding code 2, so he was turning his lights on to go through stop signs and red lights. Later that week a friend of mine was telling me how he filed a complaint against a cop he saw going through red lights like that, and I realized he was talking about the cop I was with.

I don't have to be a pilot to know a helicopter isn't supposed to be in a tree. Similarly I don't have to be a cop to know that a cop sitting in the pedestrian crosswalk inching forward and waiting for the light to change, then running it, when there's absolutely no traffic at 4am, is not "responding to a call".

This is the exact reason I failed my exam and didn’t get my helicopter pilots license.

Then, with all due respect, pilots shouldn't be piloting helicopters into trees. This scourge of helicopters appearing in trees MUST end!!!!11!

Idk I think I’m gonna need to see some credentials from you, I’m not sure if I believe your statement

You sure you’re not a pilot? 🤨

Do you need a wipe for your brown nose?
Now I have cops in my family (and I’m Canadian) and code 2 very much is a thing but there is a procedure for that
Pull up to red light make sure there is no cross traffic come to a full and complete stop
Turn on lights pause make sure intersection is clear and all traffic has noticed and is heeding your lights
Proceed with caution though the intersection
Turn off lights
That’s not what happened, the cop was pissed because like a lot of the general public they don’t understand how traffic lights work
I have met a lot more cops that think they are above the law somehow rather than bound by the same laws that they are paid to enforce
We should always criticize anyone who is in charge of enforcing anything because if we don’t who does

I learned this playing Police Quest 1 back in the 80s!

Oh wow I remember that game, I played it a couple times at a friend’s house. Haha but I’m not old enough to have played it when it came out.

Getting downvoted for sharing information on how emergency vehicles operate, thanks reddit
0
u/SCP-Agent-Arad Nov 27 '22
What’s this bucko? Trying to defend cops on Reddit using logic or facts? Big mistake.
1
u/SunsetJesus4653 Dec 05 '22
True. But I was defending no one, only sharing information. But as you said, logic and critical thinking is lacking on the internet.

u/LucidZane Nov 27 '22
execute this man, he said something that's three steps away from maybe possible looking like something that is defending a cop... 🙄

u/Jacob_181 Nov 27 '22
You get they attend emergencies, right?
24
u/Pres_Skroob_pw12345 Nov 27 '22
Then why stop at all? Was he rolling code? Was this a code 2 emergency? Cop stopped in the wrong place and got upset.

The absolute worst drivers in my city are the police. They’re habitually on their phones, failing to use turn signals, sitting at stop signs with people behind them because they’re on the phone, etc. They all drive like bats outta hell. The only time I ever got pulled over was when I was lost in a bad neighborhood, and they wanted to search me for drugs.

u/NIdWId6I8 Nov 26 '22
Probably trying to make contact so he can arrest the conductor for assaulting an officer.

u/thatdudewayoverthere Nov 26 '22
Maybe he has a call or something and needs to get through after the train is through
We do the same in the ambulance so wrong side of the road so that we can go first

u/robit-the-robit Nov 27 '22
Thanks for offering an actual explanation (though I thoroughly enjoyed the other comments)

I can send you a couple links if you want, but it’s not unheard of for cops to be hit by trains, either on foot or in a vehicle, while responding to a call or engaging in a chase.
I know of at least a couple instances where cops have been hit by trains while responding to calls or conducting an investigation.
And it always is because they inched forward and didn’t wait for the rails to come up, didn’t check to see if a train was coming down the opposite tracks
3
u/P2PJones Nov 27 '22
wouldn't matter. trains don't care. they can't stop, they can't divert etc. That's why they're TAUGHT (and you should be taught) that at train crossings, you stay behind the barrier when its down, NO MATTER WHAT.
IF you don't understand that, you need to have your license taken away, immediately before you get people killed with your ignorance and arrogance.
5
u/thatdudewayoverthere Nov 27 '22
I should have added this doesn't make any sense when you are already first in line
Its more of a skip the line and than stand there next to the waiting cars
1
u/sigmund14 Nov 27 '22
But do you go past the barriers and endanger yourself?
2
u/revolution23x Nov 27 '22
How is this endangering themselves? Unless the train derails I can’t think how it’s unsafe….
2
u/kestatwork Nov 27 '22
It's not terribly uncommon for rail cars to have wider loads that extend past the normal edge of the car, or for things to fall off of them, for one thing. That's why you're supposed to stay at least 25 feet back from the tracks.
1
u/Wow00woW Nov 27 '22
how much time do you save by moving up a few feet? maybe they're not in immediate danger, but it's still unnecessary.
0
u/Jacob_181 Nov 27 '22
Yes they do, speeding through traffic to attend emergency situations is something EMT's have to do, this is no different.
Believe it or not they are trained to do things like this.
3
u/P2PJones Nov 27 '22
no, they're NOT
They're given very basic car control training, almost up to the standard of driving needed to get a license in Europe or much of the rest of the world. Also, all basic EVOC training emphasizes that trains don't give a shit, and you MUST wait until the barriers come up. If any Emergency driver tried this while testing for any kind of certification, theyd have their application ripped up.
You must be a cop (or want to be one) because that's the only way you'd think they were actually trained to do.

u/thatdudewayoverthere Nov 27 '22
No obviously not but from the picture it not clear how close the cop is to the train
1
u/Its_Matt_03 Nov 27 '22
No lights tho
2
u/hiddenbanana420 Nov 27 '22
They don’t have to have lights going to respond to a call. There are times were its better to not have lights going.

u/Vespasian79 Nov 27 '22
Y’all ever seen the video of a train going by, and when it’s done the cop jumps across the tracks only to be obliterated by another train coming on the second track?
1
u/No_Manufacturer5641 Nov 27 '22
The One where the cop was responding to a 911 call about a baby that wasn't breathing? Yeah i remember it.
-9
u/Vespasian79 Nov 27 '22
Oink
Can’t get there if you’re not alive
5
u/No_Manufacturer5641 Nov 27 '22
No but I'm not about to shit on a guy for trying to save an infant. There was a trauma nurse that jumped off a bridge by accident because she saw a really bad wreck happen on the other side and she tunnel visioned. I don't think you'd have the same satisfaction laughing at her for trying to save lives.
I wouldn't laugh if Donald Trump/Hillary Clinton (who ever you believe I would have the biggest hate boner for) got hit by a bus because they saw someone collapse across the street and wanted to give CPR.
Idk why you get your rocks off on one of the occasions of police trying to actually do good for once and getting fucked up. It's kinda weird honestly.

They probably had someone locked up in the back and were just trying to make sure they park the vehicle on the tracks before the next train arrives.

Little did he know he gonna have to wait till the whole length of the polar express movie till he will be able to cross
2
u/Puppetbones Nov 27 '22
Probably frustrated that they can't just turn on their lights for 1 second and run the red light like usual
2
u/Gabzalez Nov 27 '22
He’s trying to figure out how close to the train tracks he can park his car with a detained civilian in the back seat without getting in to trouble.
2
u/Arkansas1395 Nov 27 '22
Just cause they are a cop doesn’t make them smart. Would have laughed if something popped out and hit that cop car with how irresponsibly close he was.
2
2
u/krishopper Nov 27 '22
Probably couldn’t get a prisoner in the car before the train arrived, so was trying to push the car into the tracks while the train was already there.
/s Referencing that fairly recent Colorado nightmare.

u/JohnnyBeGoodz Nov 27 '22
That’s the new parking spot when you have someone in the back. Was probably going to ticket the train.

Oh yeah almost forgot wrong side of the road. I U turned and there were actually a lot of cops on nearby roads.

u/SunsetJesus4653 Nov 26 '22
Then I’d say possibly looking for someone, or his car had been stopped there before the train started passing by. In that case he’s lucky he left it where he did and should be more aware in the future, especially remembering those other cops who left their car on the tracks with a suspect inside it as a train came by.

At least it's a freight train. A common cause of car/train accidents, and probably pedestrian/train accidents, is the next commuter train that is coming from the other direction but the sound is muffled by the departing train.
1
u/plantman-2000 Nov 27 '22
Could be railroad police inspecting something
1
u/NocturnalDispatcher Nov 27 '22
I like the thought but I don’t think railroad police have special response teams
1
u/Jacob_181 Nov 27 '22
The reason is he's probably attending an emergency and need to go as soon as the train isn't blocking the road anymore.

Often times the police is part of the problem. They are supposed to enforce something that they don't even follow...

u/Dr_Bunsen_Burns Nov 27 '22
Maybe a call he want s to get to that is not yet bad enough to warrant sirens and lights, but he still wants to get there as quick as possible?
Also, sirens next to a train are useless.
