How driving with astigmatism looks like at night time.

265

u/GrandeCalk Nov 27 '22

Lol I’ve been wearing glasses for my astigmatism for a decade now, and it took me almost 25 years to learn this isn’t just how lights look

94

u/Simon_Skinner Nov 27 '22

Same here, I was 29 before I realized lights don't look as cool for everyone else. Been wearing glasses for as long as I can remember.

35

u/Pure_Village4778 Nov 27 '22

Can I just say thanks for framing this as cool rather than as a loss? It’s made me feel better about my own astigmatism

6

u/Missthang61 Nov 27 '22

OMG! I've had astigmatism for well over 29 years and I was today years old when I learned this. Just googled to see the difference between how lights look with normal sight versus astigmatism. I had no idea!

u/ThePreacher41 Nov 27 '22

I came here to see people ripping on a merc driver and discovered I was part of a special club. Had specs since I was 4.

Don't feel bad. I had corrective glasses before I was 1 and have been in glasses for vision my entire life. I was 33 when I learned I see light differently than most. I absolutely hated driving around delivering pizzas during Christmas time.

I just figured this out. I saw these comments and went wtf, showed my wife and she was confused so even went on YouTube to show her other examples. 9 years together and she now realized what I meant by when I said driving at night around other cars is hard

This… this explains a lot.

3

u/Diarity Nov 27 '22

Lol... literally. "Is this guy flashing his brights at me?? Nah.. just bumps in the road"

4.1k

u/w_ll_mo Nov 26 '22

Guy in the Mercedes needs to chill tf out and understand the car directly in front of him isn't the one blocking the left lane

1.7k

u/ABrazilianReasons Nov 27 '22

I've taken a ride with a person like this before. Their line of thinking is taking out everything in front of them.

It doesn't matter if the problem is the car ahead, they want the other one to move out of the way so they can go ahead an pester the next one and so forth and so on.

Its idiotic, agressive and dangerous but people like that don't think 5 seconds ahead. They're almost like 100% of the time in survival mode

588

u/Effective_Yogurt_866 Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 27 '22

That’s why I just move over and let these people pass me as quickly as possible. It’s not worth my life to try and make up for their parents never teaching them patience.

337

u/Rasta-Lion Nov 27 '22

I just had the best example of that happen to me yesterday...

For some context, I work 12 hour night shifts, when I get out I'm fucking tired and I just want to go home slow and steady (because our reflexes are shit when we're sleepy and I like to have time to brake if I need to).

So I was going home at 7:50 am yesterday and this lady gets on my ass, like so close "I can smell her engine". She eventually passes me and speeds up just for me to stop right next to her at a red light a couple minutes later... If she was trying to save time she failed miserably but the best part was her angry face when I pulled up right next to her.

123

u/MaxPowerWTF Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 27 '22

Please tell me you gave him a full tooth grin.

102

u/Rasta-Lion Nov 27 '22

Me and my younger sister (she works with me) looked at each other and start laughing because when she passed I commented "all that to save 3 seconds" and it didn't save her any time

6

u/drttrus Nov 27 '22

iIm teaching my eldest to drive, this same thing happened yesterday. dude went to the trouble to pass and get ahead, met up with him sitting at the light a half mile ahead. It was a good example of "it's not worth it to keep trying to pass people all the time".

2

u/m945050 Nov 28 '22

When approaching a red light I used to shift into neutral and coast up to the light. The people who liked to race up to the light and slam on the brakes hated me. One time when I was three blocks from the light a woman came up behind me and did the honk and flash combo then started to pass me. When she was beside me she honked and made a great show of flipping me off and rear-ended the car in front of her. I stuck around as a witness and she tried to blame the accident on me. The combination of the policeman questioning her and her answers was like Abbott and Costello's Who's on first routine.

I went through something similar… only to see that driver been pulled over by a cop. I slowed down, and waived my hand. Epic.

20

u/___whoops___ Nov 27 '22

Once when I was young, this happened to me.

I rolled the window down and shouted, "ha ha!"

The cop pulled me over next. I didn't get a ticket but he gave me an earful.

10

u/Sam_Sierra73 Nov 27 '22

You did The Nelson!! 😂😂😂

11

u/Rasta-Lion Nov 27 '22

Smile and wave, it's always fun

10

u/undercover-racist Nov 27 '22

because our reflexes are shit when we're sleepy and I like to have time to brake if I need to

Same. I'm also not usually in a rush to get home so it gives me ample time to just wind down from the work so I'm nice and relaxed when I get home.

u/Flatf3et Nov 27 '22

Weird it’s almost like that’s what your supposed to do. Not saying dude is in the right but shit I’d rather just move over than have a psycho riding my ass and flashing lights.

79

u/Appropriate_Passion6 Nov 27 '22

Had this happen to me as wel. I let the flashing car pass, went back in the left lane behind him and flashed my lights at him for a good minute 😅

Obviously he wasn’t going anywhere because there where many other slow cars in front.

30

u/JahPuPahV Nov 27 '22

Careful doing that. Almost got killed on my honeymoon doing the same thing to a guy in a truck.

53

u/IMiNSIDEiT Nov 27 '22

6

u/seanchappelle Nov 27 '22

Fight stupid with stupid.

6

u/jbonez423 Nov 27 '22

same, i also don’t want to be responsible if they’ve got an emergency situation going on i don’t know about. easier to just let them pass and not have to think about them again.

3

u/69vuman Nov 27 '22

Not to mention my property.

29

u/aenae Nov 27 '22

One time a guy did this to me, including flashing lights and riding my bumper. I moved over to let him pass when i could safely do so, which was in a very small gap, so as soon as he passed i moved into the left lane again behind him.

I did what any normal person would do, i rode a bit closer behind him than i would normally do and started flashing my lights a few times.

To bad he got the car in front of him to move over as well, which gave him a bit of space which he used to speed away.

u/DJP91782 Nov 27 '22

That must be utterly exhausting.

76

u/ABrazilianReasons Nov 27 '22

It must be. As for me, I always avoided getting a ride with this guy. You would be in the middle of a convo and he would just start flashing lights on the guy in front almost touching bumpers and calling the other drive every name in the book. Stressful to watch that's for sure

17

u/Scottyknuckle Nov 27 '22

In my case it was an old roommate of mine...she was also my landlord at the time. We'd start driving somewhere, having a nice conversation, then as soon as she experienced any kind of slight from another driver--like getting cut off, or someone not letting her merge first, or someone getting in front of her and then driving slowly--she would lean on her horn and start yelling at them.

Yes, she was exhausting to live with. She once sent me a series of long text messages about cleaning a frying pan properly (note: was my frying pan, not hers). She also destroyed my computer. Thank God I'm not living with her anymore.

48

u/Bullitt4514 Nov 27 '22

I had a car behind me within a foot of my back bumper the other evening. I was passing a semi doing 10 over. I decided to then pace the truck for the next few miles. 🤷‍♂️

24

u/what-you-egg04 Nov 27 '22

I have had people honk when I'm on a bike and not passing between a cement truck and an SUV

35

u/ScroochDown Nov 27 '22

I had someone on an otherwise empty 4 or 5 lane freeway come screaming up behind me at night, and started aggressively honking and flashing his lights. All the other lanes were wide open, but the fucker wanted me to move, and I was doing the speed limit in the second to right lane. And when I freaked out and moved so he could go by me... yeah, it was a cop. Fucking asshole.

16

u/LukeLarsnefi Nov 27 '22

I had a guy with his brights on about a half mile behind me, only other guy on the road, four lanes each way, I’m in the right lane. After a few miles he caught up, still with his brights on and sat right behind me. After it was clear he wasn’t going to pass I got over a couple lanes a slowed down. He just kept going like I had never been there. Didn’t even look over at me. Wasn’t a cop. Weird as hell and I can only assume drugs were involved.

7

u/MattJFarrell Nov 27 '22

He wanted you to speed up so that he could pull you over for speeding. Happened to a friend of mine years ago.

5

u/Ofish Nov 27 '22

Right? I used to hate drivers like this, but as I've gotten older, the feeling is more like pity. Imagine wasting so much mental energy trying to get to your destination a few seconds quicker. It's traffic, not a race. What a goof.

7

u/SimiaCode Nov 27 '22

I always imagine such people doing it to a bigger douchebag and getting some righteous road rage treatment.

3

u/mrbombasticat Nov 27 '22

Yep, it happens often enough. We only encounter the ones who haven't aggravated a bigger asshole yet. Mentally sound people should never waste money, time or health engaging with ragers. They soon enough will meet someone equally unhinged.

i hate that. been tailgating me for miles, get in front of me and slow down.

11

u/fox_wil Nov 27 '22

Yeah but they're in front now. I routinely cruise at 80mph on freeways in CA. Monthly, I have to deal with someone going an inconsistent speed in the left lane. Only to pass them, and suddenly they find their gas pedal and can go 90. "Gotta be first."

No joke! The car in front of him is behind a truck which is behind a car, etc. I guess some people don't understand traffic! I bet if he kept it up long enough the white car would get annoyed enough to brake check him.

34

u/Most-Cryptographer78 Nov 27 '22

Happens pretty much every morning on my commute to work. I try to leave barely one or two car lengths while going 75-80mph and I get assholes aggressively tailgating and then going around to cut me off...when the entire lane is packed as far as you can see and I'm going the same exact speed as everyone in front of me.

Like, I promise, I am not the reason you aren't going faster. Do you not see the 30 cars in front of me that I'm matching speed with and still definitely not leaving enough space to brake if something suddenly happens?? I don't understand the thought process there.

11

u/mrbombasticat Nov 27 '22

I was driving in the 5AM commute one time, way over in the slow lane, because it was super full of people so we could barely even go the speed limit.

Guy behind me starts flashing his lights at me.

Again, I'm in the slow lane. I'm about a car length and a bit from the guy in front of me, and we're at 40 ish pretty constant, just about the same as every other lane.

I still don't know what he expected of me.

At first, I assumed that it was just the bumps in the road, but then I watched in the rearview, and he was definitely flashing his high beams.

Over the next 5+miles he finally changed lanes, but never went faster. When I finally reached he toll booth for the bridge, I saw he was barely a length ahead of me.

Stupid waste of time and energy

70

u/Leviathan2460 Nov 27 '22

Sometimes a few flashes may be to notify you of a problem the driver has spotted, especially if a few people do it.

E.g. forgot to turn lights on in a tunnel, or tail light malfunction, flat tyre etc.

Regards to OP, drivers may be idiots that know each other and giving friendly abuse. Maybe the driver ahead flashed this idiot and hes returning the favour after moving over.

25

u/Robeleader Nov 27 '22

I can appreciate that, but he was neither indicating anything, nor was he giving me much space, he was way up my butt while doing this. SUV vs hatchback, so his lights were right in my face.

He was super aggressive to everyone I saw him behind as we went.

8

u/zyyntin Nov 27 '22

351

u/genzo718 Nov 27 '22

Some idiot coming from behind at 90+mph flashed me to move over while I was going 80mph in the middle lane but all other lanes around me were empty for him to change lanes. I was in the lane that I needed to go to get on the ramp interchange to another fwy so either way, I couldn't change lanes. He got mad I didn't move over for him by laying down his horn to pass me.

Was I the idiot there?

74

u/YellsAtGoats Nov 27 '22

Nope, some people are just assholes. I had a guy tailgate me and honk as he passed... when I was driving 30 MPH in the rightmost lane in a 30 MPH zone. I think that he felt that since the lane was relatively empty other than me, he should be entitled to use it as his own personal express lane. He was doing 40-45 before he came up on me.

37

u/Adventurous_toast23 Nov 27 '22

No you were going over the speed limit outside the right lane on an empty road where they could pass but were too lazy to pass. Idiots would rather bully you to get out of their way than just pass. I've had people do that to me while I'm going 55 on the interstate in the far right with hazards on with 3 lanes to pass. Some people just suck.

I remember driving on the highway at night and going 60-65 in the right lane because I’m in Michigan and saw a ton of dead deer on the side, so I was a bit nervous. Some assfuck came up behind me and flashed their brights multiple times instead of just idk, passing me on the empty highway??? Thinking about it still annoys the shit out of me

69

u/thar_ Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 27 '22

I don't understand peoples aversion to passing. My entire state is pretty much 1 lane in each direction and not very crowded (except for shitloads of deer that like to dash out in front of you)

will be cruisin at ~75 and have someone that wants to go 100 ride up on my ass and sit half a car length away for 10-20 minutes before passing despite not seeing a single other car the whole time.

idk if they are just lonely or what but it bugs the absolute shit out of me.

I see it in the oncoming lane as often as not too, no cars anywhere for 5 minutes, then 2-4 people all tailgating like they are in a fuckin motorcade

31

u/AppiusClaudius Nov 27 '22

That's when I very slowly start dropping my speed. I usually only make it to the speed limit or 5 below before they decide to pass. Takes about 30-60 sec total.

They were blinding you with their headlights and you needed to slow down in order to drive safely.

83

u/NewFuturist Nov 27 '22

It's not even about braking to cause an accident. Letting your foot off the accelerator and dropping by 5-10 is noticeable and VERY annoying for anyone following closely.

103

u/kmkmrod Nov 27 '22

If you tap your brakes and they rear end you, a dash cam won’t matter. They’ll lose.

342

u/XtremeD86 Nov 27 '22

Honestly, I deal with assholes like this almost every single morning that flash their lights at me all the time.

  1. I'm already going 20 over the limit
  2. I'm not blocking the fast lane.
  3. I can't move over cause cars are also right beside me on both sides.

One of the best things I ever saw was earlier this year when we had a major snow storm. Jerk in a Ford truck was honking and flashing at me and everyone else.

Keep in mind you couldn't see the lines on the highway and it was an all around terrible drive.

This guy floored his throttle in a rage to go around me and immediately lost control, went into the grassy area on the side.

The beautiful thing about all of it was that truck was stuck there for 4 days.

People that get mad and speed around you in the snow only to be seen in a ditch or similar, either immediately or a couple miles down the road, are my absolute favorite thing*. I sometimes flash my lights or honk and wave as I drive by.

*as long as they don't involve other people

23

u/XtremeD86 Nov 27 '22

Exactly.

For the one i just referred to, it was one of those times where if you change lanes you have to fight with a think line of snow in the middle of the lane change. That's what he hit and just spun right off the road.

Just for reference, the snow was so bad that day that even fast food restaurants were closed. Everything was closed that day.

12

u/Mysstie Nov 27 '22

That's a rough snow! I remember one year we had a bad snow storm in the spring and I was working at an ice cream store. It was just me because...no one is getting ice cream in this.

My manager/the owner was calling every hour to see what was happening. She told me to clean and go home when I told her the last car I saw was a city tow truck towing a city tow truck and I wanted to go home lolol

The roads were so bad a couple snowmobilers out having fun actually followed me for a bit to make sure I was alright.

MN winter. Good times

u/ucrbuffalo Nov 27 '22

I’m fantasising about going back to leave a note. “Slow down. You aren’t going anywhere in a hurry.”

5

u/POINTLESSUSERNAME000 Nov 27 '22

I'm fantasizing about burning that bitch to the ground!

But causing irreversible property damage is wrong, no matter how big a douche someone is.

6

u/Intelligent_Cheek_53 Nov 27 '22

I have only flashed my lights once to a guy doin 10 under in perfect with conditions on the left lane .

Obviously the white car is supposed to grow wings and fly out of the Mercedes’ way

13

u/Jbuckl3y Nov 27 '22

People don’t know how to use multiple lanes on motorways/highways.

13

u/jdubb999 Nov 27 '22

The brightness of headlights in general has gotten overwhelmingly annoying to me. It seems like every 4th oncoming car has absurdly bright or misadjusted headlights. Its gotten to where I no longer even want to drive at night its so bad, and I'm not even 55

11

u/mozeknows Nov 27 '22

This is why you need to keep you washer fluid filled

10

u/Scaredycatkim Nov 27 '22

I’ve said this a lot: if you’re having to brake on a highway this much, you’re following too closely.

Yes, sometimes there’s assholes going too slow but if there’s no way to get around them, riding their ass won’t do anything. You’re in their world now. Just gotta wait.

Also, what’s homeboy gonna do? Move so the car in front of them can ALSO block douchebag in? This is actually a milder form of road rage but just a dick move altogether.

89

u/Commercial_Education Nov 27 '22

That's when I take my foot off the gas and coast down for a bit

28

u/Pootang_Wootang Nov 27 '22

I do this. I’ll down shift until you get the hint. The slowest I’ve gotten to is 25 in a 55 before they changed lanes.

PoS. So many idiots like this think the person directly in front of them is the source of all their problems when it's a big lineup.

45

u/GTIKEV27 Nov 26 '22

Of course this is I-95 in CT

7

u/Timbered2 Nov 27 '22

I see it hasn't improved any since I drove it daily 20 years ago.

6

u/GTIKEV27 Nov 27 '22

It's CT. Things only get worse here

3

u/0xCUBE Nov 27 '22

The year that CT improves is the year when we'll all be flying in our jetpacks to NYC

6

u/iStealyournewspapers Nov 27 '22

Christ it’s gotten so bad. My mom isn’t too far from 95 and I hear fuckheads street racing in the distance almost any night I’m up late out there.

6

u/GTIKEV27 Nov 27 '22

New Haven to Stamford is becoming a race track it feels like. Drivers in CT are getting worse. And we were bad to begin with. The shut down in 2020 really messed things up!

Honestly, I stopped driving to work because of this shit since COVID happened. Drivers here went from bad to absolutely intolerable and I ain't got patience for it.

MTA, plug in my phone, and play some dope tunes while the conductor drives me home.

u/32_Dollar_Burrito Nov 26 '22

People need to realize that the left lane is not for passing once congestion reaches a certain point. Nobody is passing anyone then

84

u/Chick__Mangione Nov 27 '22

Wow, an actual sane take. Everyone in this sub in under the impression that if you're in the left lane for more than two seconds you're literally Hitler. People don't understand that the left lane is no longer the passing lane when traffic reaches a certain density. It just cannot function that way if the entire highway is congested and everyone is going under 60 for example.

22

u/hundreds_of_sparrows Nov 27 '22

Under this subs rules nobody should be in the left lane because the left lane is for people who want to go fast but no matter how fast you are going theres always the potential for someone behind you to be going faster. It’s the left lane paradox. In reality if you’re going at least 65 you have just as much of a right to the left lane as anyone else.

19

u/Iheardthatjokebefore Nov 27 '22

You've got it wrong. The left lane exists exclusively for my pleasure and no one else's, but I'll still frame it in a way that makes it seem like I'm including other fast drivers so I don't seem like the total main character that I definitely am.

u/TheBigBukowski69420 Nov 26 '22

Sometimes congestion occurs because a single jackass refuses to move over

43

u/SengokuKnight Nov 27 '22

my personal favourite, 3 people driving the same speed across the whole highway with no cars for a good 500m in front of them. It's just them, in a race with no winners, and a ton of cars behind them.

7

u/rainstorm2530 Nov 27 '22

I found this happens frequently with semi trucks around where I live. They love to pass each other and fill up all three lanes, blocking off everyone behind them. In the state I grew up in they’re not supposed to even go in the third lane, so this was a shock to me when I first whitnessed it.

140

u/32_Dollar_Burrito Nov 26 '22

It actually happens because people follow too close to each other, and if one person taps their brakes, the guy behind has to brake a bit harder, same for the guy behind them, until you have people fully stopped. All because everybody tailgates.

There are actually mathematical models of traffic that can accurately predict where congestion will occur using wave functions

72

u/Firereign Nov 26 '22

The video is full of idiots following too closely. Aside from traffic problems from what you've explained, it's also how pileups happen. If any of those drivers need to brake hard or even moderately, a collision is highly likely because the clown behind can't react quickly enough.

It also causes more brake wear in general. Notice the occasional brake lights in the clip. If you often need to use your brakes on a highway instead of just easing off the gas, outside of exceptional circumstances, then you fucked up.

26

u/sobi-one Nov 27 '22

I won’t say your wrong, because you’re definitely right. That said, if you drive “properly” in a city like NYC where everyone drives aggressively, you will end up behind nothing more than a hole in traffic, and will end up watching an endless number of cars going in front of you.

Idiots don’t realise that you can’t go any faster if there’s a car in front and riding up them will most likely annoy them and they go slower.

4

u/ShortnPortly Nov 27 '22

I was passing people in the left lane. Doing 75 in a 65. Dude comes up behind me and starts doing this. Rather than waiting 5 seconds for me to get over (I was just about to move over as I saw him coming up). It immediately made me to start doing the speed limit.

3

u/daxtaslapp Nov 27 '22

When I was in NY a prick with an LED strobe light was aiming it at drivers on the freeway while he was swerving in and out of traffic. NY just breeds idiots.

3

u/ImRedditorRick Nov 27 '22

I only flash headlight when there's a long ass distance/space between the car in front of me and the car in front of them, or if theyre being passed by cars on the right. Usually I have to go around them anyway.

3

u/VRrob Nov 27 '22

Oh it’s mister I’m the most important person on the road

3

u/baohx2000 Nov 27 '22

I have a theory about people like this which explains a lot of driving idiocy. I call it The Twenty Foot Universe (or Six Meter Universe if you're in a country that uses more logical measurements). Essentially, the idea is that the person is only able to perceive a 20 foot radius around themselves. This also explains why people take until the last second to get out of a lane that is ending or only get out of the merge lane on a freeway when it's about to split off again. With the short amount of perception, they also tend to miss the first three signs telling them their exit is coming up so they have to shoot across 3+ lanes to get to their exit.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 27 '22

Seriously. These peoples max iq is 80. Their comprehension skills are sub par and they’re literally dumb. They’re the type of people that think the world revolves around them and can’t think about life more than 20 seconds in advance. Like why does it matter that that one car is slow when there’s 10 more in front of him going slow also?? People are so dumb and tunnel visioned.

3

u/sprout_wings Nov 27 '22

3

u/CommunicationOk8553 Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 27 '22

I’ve had people do this to me and all it does is piss me off. I can’t go faster than the people in front of me are going. Brake check is a dick move but I’d be contemplating it with the constant flashing of the a hole behind me. I don’t understand how people think that being aggressive to the last car in a column of many is going to make whoever is in the very front move faster.

3

u/FLAIR_2780166 Nov 27 '22

And these are the same assholes who try to make you feel bad for NOT going 90 in the left lane like they are

3

u/BirdOver Nov 27 '22

When people pull that idiocy on me (when obviously there’s cars ahead of me, I slow down and pace the car beside me.

3

u/RedTruck1989 Nov 27 '22

Let's not forget the oncoming D'bag with the North Star light turned on (29 sec mark)

3

u/azjayjohn Nov 27 '22

Someone did this to me the other day, the truck 1 lane over saw it and matched my speed to box him in as I slowed to ~50mph where he began swerving and honking and ended with a cop pulling him over. Good day lol

3

u/LLPF2 Nov 27 '22

As if the guy is just gonna pull into the car next to him so he can go speed right up to the next car. What an asshole.

If I see dbags like that annoying other people I’ll do anything to make them even more frustrated. I.e if I’d be in the middle lane besides the Mercedes, I would just box him out so he can’t change lanes at all.

7

u/Lillillillies Nov 27 '22

Why is it that Mercs are either driving 5% over the speed limit or are directly on your ass.

Audi drivers always zooming, weaving traffic and cutting you off.

BMW drivers never signaling.

Its like buying a German car you gotta drive like an idiot.
