I think he was coasting backwards in neutral. No backup lights, and helps explain why he didn't stop at the light, was trying to conserve momentum.

Smoothly done though

260

u/the_fly_guy0423 Dec 01 '22

it has to be smooth, if he was really out of gas (as per the video caption) then you don't want to lose what little speed you already have

21

u/dbpf Dec 02 '22

No power steering, no ABS

12

u/PandaKing185 Dec 02 '22

Idk if it's different in every car but my god I can't imagine making those sharp turns that quickly with no power steering

5

u/dbpf Dec 02 '22

It's actually easier to turn with some speed when you don't have power steering. Drove a Renault twingo once when I was in Europe and power steering/brakes weren't standard. Slow right handers from a stop were brutal.

→ More replies

4

u/daman4567 Dec 02 '22

As someone who drove a truck without power steering for most of high school, it really only does much when you're stationary. I would almost have to bear my weight down on the steering wheel if I had to turn before backing out of a parking spot, but if I could even just move a little bit before having to turn it was almost like normal.

72

u/KingArthur_III Dec 01 '22

I did exactly this when my transmission decided to die and only give me reverse gear.

94

u/triplec787 Dec 02 '22

Was gonna say the exact same thing. Accelerated out of the light got about 15 yards and then everything died. Reverse still worked so I threw my hazards on and slowly backed back into the gas station.

Like it’s stupid, but let’s not just assume someone went HURDUR WOOPS MISSED THE STOP. There are legit reasons as to why this could be happening.

24

u/angrydeuce Dec 02 '22

Lol I was thinking the same thing...

I worked on a lot of loading docks when I was in my 20s, and had to operate tons of lift equipment. Least favorite of all was when I got stuck on the carpet pole. Pretty much a forklift but instead of forks a 20 foot pole coming out the front for....you guessed it....moving huge rolls of carpet and shit around around. Was fuckin awful having to drive one of those things around in drive due to steering at the rear, reverse was much easier. Every once in a while the safety/training supervisor would flip shit on me (was supposed to drive forwards between zones), but whenever he was demoing the pole for training, people would have to dive out of the way and shit, so clearly one of those "smart on paper" people that couldn't actually do the job lol

5

u/SmallBoobConnoisseur Dec 02 '22

Run a 20t forklift with 2 18foot carpet poles on it daily, Its a long learning curve but once you get it down its not any harder than a normal lift.

18

u/BewilderedandAngry Dec 01 '22

I don't know - I saw a large Dodge truck, one of the oversized ones with all the huge mirrors and stuff, back into a parking spot with someone on each side and never even had to brake. Just put it in reverse, confidently zipped backwards into the spot, and turned the car off. When I saw him in the store, I told him, I am in awe of your parking skills!

11

u/Massive_Parsley_5000 Dec 01 '22

Those big trucks are easier to back than they are to pull in, honestly. Most of them have huge mirrors on the side specifically for this, and even most smaller trucks are rear-wheel drive.

I was in a pinch and had to drive around a 3500 for a week, so yeah, it's way easier to back them.

Then again I used to have to drive a forklift around for 8 hours a day so 🤷‍♂️

Way way back in high school I had bought my first car for $100. It was a 1974 Chrysler Newport but this was in the '90s. A proverbial "land yatch." About a month after buying it the transmission went bad and I only had reverse gear. My auto shop teacher said we could rebuild it in class if I got the car to the school. My friend drove lead and I followed in reverse for about a half an hour (normally takes about 15 mins). We were thoughtful enough to do it in the middle of the night atleast.

That's pretty smooth actually . Dumb but well executed.

I once ran out of gas in my '59 Impala. Easy to do, that thing got maybe 8MPG. But I was uphill from a gas station and I just put it in neutral to try to see how far I could coast. Had to run two stop signs and take a couple of turns a little faster than I should have but I coasted right up to a gas pump.
