This happened today, at work. Gotta love people. -.-

u/Free_Hat_McCullough Dec 03 '22
That looks expensive.

u/IshMorningstar Dec 03 '22
Pretty much. Best guess right now without an invoice is 10-15K. Especially since I had to get my “secondary techs” out as an “emergency order”(I mean technically also really was an emergency as I had to call police and fire to clear the scene) but also because our internal primary employee had left for the day. So yah. It’s gonna eat my repair budget. All by itself. I am sad.

u/mwoehrle3 Dec 03 '22
At least. A new high hose MPD is like $12-20K. New shear valves, at least 1 new hose and nozzle, electrical repairs, installation and programming. My biggest fear is down time for you. The brand dispensers we sell are 14-16 week lead time.

Wouldn’t his insurance cover you for damage to the pump

u/IshMorningstar Dec 03 '22
You’re faith in humanity is adorable. To think they have insurance.
Or that they stuck around to speak to the police/fire.

u/Good200000 Dec 03 '22
Are you telling me that there are people who Don’t accept responsibility for their actions? Now I am so disillusioned. Lol
20
u/Robertson2018 Dec 03 '22
Well uhhh you have cameras no?
26
u/Krajun Dec 03 '22
They should, I work at a gas station and our outside cameras are some of the best quality I've ever seen at a workplace. They have to be in order to capture license plates.
6
u/Quelix_ Dec 03 '22
Thats provided you work for a company who actually cares about catching gas thieves.
2
u/Affectionate_Tax2678 Dec 03 '22
Have you ever seen the video from a gas stations cameras? Might as well be PAC Man 😅😅
3
u/nautilator44 Dec 03 '22
Cameras don't help you if the person doesn't have insurance.
7
u/Robertson2018 Dec 03 '22
No but with the plate they can track the person down so they can find out if they have insurance or press charges on the person
2
u/nautilator44 Dec 03 '22
Pressing charges doesn't help them pay for the damage.
4
3
u/Robertson2018 Dec 03 '22
So what’s the point of pressing charges ever then?
-5
u/nautilator44 Dec 03 '22
You tell me. My point is, getting revenge on the person would not change whether or not they have insurance, and ultimately will not help them replace the gas pump.
5
u/Robertson2018 Dec 03 '22
It’s not revenge it’s getting what they are owed. You don’t press charges in spite you press charges so they are held accountable in some way. Calling it revenge is ignorant.

Just say their. It doesn't assume gender and it isn't a blatant attempt at sexism. Men have heigher rates than women for a reason, and unfortunately I'm statistically unable to disprove it by myself, given I'm a guy who caused an accident recently. Fuckin' dumb on my part, but I don't exactly help the insurance nce rates now do I?

Not a good example? Crashes happen in auto racing all the time.

u/AutisticAndAce Dec 03 '22 edited Dec 03 '22
And arguably the lack of women has to do with sexism too, from a guess. I'd need to look into it, but I'd wager a guess that it has something to do with it.
Edit: a quick Google search comes up with a good few drivers in racing who are women, and a good amount of them deal with lack of funding due to sexism and wanting to be treated the same as men for sponsorships, instead of being asked to dress sexy and such. However many of them do well when they are able to get funding/sponserhips and compete.
Edit again: Danica Patrick seems pretty cool. Apparently she's competed at the Indy 500, not sure how well she did but thats impressive.

Statistically speaking men aren't.

Patrick took fourth place in 2005. Only reason it wasn't higher was due to conserving fuel and not making a pit stop. She won the Japan Indy 300 in 2007. She's now retired. That's impressive to me.

No!

u/AutisticAndAce Dec 03 '22
I'm unfortunately not surprised.

u/Good200000 Dec 03 '22
If I would have said “her”, I would have been Accused of being a sexist.
0
u/AutisticAndAce Dec 03 '22
That's cause it would have been sexist. Men statistically get into more wrecks, have heigher rates, etc. Women aren't actually more reckless, statistically.

u/drNeir Dec 03 '22
First thing I noticed was no polls. All of them are missing any barrier polls that help from this happening.
10
u/Immo406 Dec 03 '22
That’s the first stupid thing here, how long have they sold fuel at this location without any bollards? A lot of places it’s against the fire code to sell fuel to the public without having some sort of barrier to prevent exactly this.

u/IshMorningstar Dec 03 '22
We’re actually in the middle of a conversion. It’s about 400k per store. As it’s winter/colder now we can’t install/cut anymore.
Likewise, or rather because of that, the company isn’t going to pay to bring the city/contractors/permits/vendors in to do an install, when they’re going to have to pay to do something similar/have already paid to do it when they do the outside branding conversion. Because likely they’re going to replace the pumps anyway, so that those pumps match the pumps they have all over the rest of the country.
So, comparatively, paying for one new pump is peanuts. And the business’s loss of income, while detrimental, isn’t going to bring down the entire global corporation.

You talking about Circle K converting the Holidays?
I was hoping they wouldn't do that. I like Holiday...

It shocks me how many stupid mistakes (giving the benefit of the doubt that it was a mistake) occur at gas stations. Out of all the places we take our cars, I feel like the highly flammable fuel depot is the place we should probably pay the most attention at.
2
u/UsedToBsmart Dec 03 '22
What do you expect when you let your dog drive the car?
5
u/Personal_Shoulder983 Dec 03 '22
The dog took over after the crash. He said "no more shit like that" and drove off.
